:00:00. > :00:09.Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford. In tonight's programme:

:00:10. > :00:13.Police confirm the body found in Didcot is Jayden Parkinson. As

:00:14. > :00:17.people light candles in her memory, detectives say it could be six weeks

:00:18. > :00:20.before they know how the teenager died.

:00:21. > :00:24.Also tonight: Tackling domestic violence ` could speeding up the

:00:25. > :00:29.court process encourage more victims to prosecute their partners?

:00:30. > :00:30.And later on: Memories of how Ronaldo left his mark on a

:00:31. > :00:49.12`year`old boy. Good evening. Police investigating

:00:50. > :00:52.the murder of Jayden Parkinson have confirmed the body they found in

:00:53. > :00:56.Didcot is that of the missing teenager. Meanwhile, mourners have

:00:57. > :00:59.been paying their respects to the 17`year`old. People have been

:01:00. > :01:03.invited to light candles at All Saints Church. Jayden's body was

:01:04. > :01:07.discovered in the graveyard there. Her former boyfriend has been

:01:08. > :01:10.charged with her murder. Stuart Tinworth reports.

:01:11. > :01:18.Tributes for Jayden, just a few metres from where police found a

:01:19. > :01:24.body on Wednesday. People in Didcot are being invited to light a candle

:01:25. > :01:33.in her memory and sign a book of condolence. It's been organised by

:01:34. > :01:36.All Saints Church. It's a dark time when something like this happens and

:01:37. > :01:39.people can feel low and despairing and the candle is the symbol of

:01:40. > :01:42.light and hope that we yearn for at such a time. All day people have

:01:43. > :01:48.been filtering in and out. Some knew her, some did not ` but all united

:01:49. > :01:54.in their grief. Yeah, she was nice. Quite friendly with everyone. She

:01:55. > :01:58.was quite loud and quite bubbly and never afraid to say what she

:01:59. > :02:02.thought. This church means a lot to me and my family. I was married here

:02:03. > :02:09.and both my children were christened here. Just come and pay our means a

:02:10. > :02:12.lot. Especially at Christmas, it has more impact on the local people and

:02:13. > :02:15.her family and friends. It's been more than two weeks since Jayden

:02:16. > :02:24.disappeared. She was last seen alive at Didcot train station.

:02:25. > :02:28.This graveyard became the focal point of the investigation into her

:02:29. > :02:33.disappearance this week. Dozens of officers were carrying out forensic

:02:34. > :02:39.operations here but today, all that remains is a freshly turfed grave

:02:40. > :02:42.with no headstone. 22`year`old Ben Blakely from Reading's been charged

:02:43. > :02:45.with her murder. A 17`year`old, who can't be named, has been charged

:02:46. > :02:48.with assisting an offender. A postmortem into the cause of

:02:49. > :02:59.Jayden's death has been unable to establish how she died. Further

:03:00. > :03:02.tests may take as long as six weeks. For people who are experience

:03:03. > :03:06.domestic violence, prosecuting their abusive partner can be an ordeal.

:03:07. > :03:12.The two`month court process can be too much to bear. Thames Valley

:03:13. > :03:16.Police is now seeing whether speeding up the process ` from eight

:03:17. > :03:22.weeks to two ` will encourage more victims to go ahead with

:03:23. > :03:26.prosecutions. Tom Turrell reports. It's estimated that as many as one

:03:27. > :03:30.in three women will experience the mystic abuse in their lifetimes. But

:03:31. > :03:35.getting them to report a loved one can be very hard. Now Thames Valley

:03:36. > :03:38.Police hope the new scheme, being trialled in parts of

:03:39. > :03:43.Buckinghamshire, will speed up the process and result in more

:03:44. > :03:46.convictions. At the moment, the average time from first hearing to

:03:47. > :03:49.trial is about eight weeks and under the pilot that will reduce to

:03:50. > :03:56.approximately two weeks on the depending on quarter but the ``

:03:57. > :04:00.court availability. That means victims don't have to wait as long

:04:01. > :04:04.for their trial to come to court and they get their case concluded more

:04:05. > :04:08.quickly than at the moment. The problem is, a relatively small

:04:09. > :04:14.number of reported incidents of domestic abuse actually result in

:04:15. > :04:17.convictions. In 2011, just over 40% of crimes reported resulted in

:04:18. > :04:23.prosecution. That number dropped further last year and, this year, it

:04:24. > :04:26.still remains low. It's for that reason that domestic abuse charities

:04:27. > :04:31.believe the latest abutment is a step forward. They really need to

:04:32. > :04:35.feel that something will change, otherwise they'll just make

:04:36. > :04:39.themselves more vulnerable and they can feel that nothing has changed.

:04:40. > :04:45.That can impact on them believing that the perpetrator does have total

:04:46. > :04:49.control. Thames Valley Police's trial will last for three months

:04:50. > :04:52.but, if successful, it will be rolled out across the whole of

:04:53. > :04:56.Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and parts of Berkshire permanently.

:04:57. > :04:59.The family of a man who was found dead five days after he went missing

:05:00. > :05:03.have made an official complaint about how long it took police to

:05:04. > :05:11.respond to his disappearance. The body of Tom Edwards' body was found

:05:12. > :05:16.next to a railway line. He'd disappeared after a night out in

:05:17. > :05:21.Swindon. It gets worse. It doesn't get better. They say time is a

:05:22. > :05:25.healer. For Tom's widow, life without him is a living nightmare.

:05:26. > :05:30.The couple were married and lived together here in Calne for just over

:05:31. > :05:37.a year. What is day`to`day life like? Hard, really hard. Never easy.

:05:38. > :05:41.Tom was on a Friday night out with work colleagues at this bar in

:05:42. > :05:45.Swindon. What we know is that after he left, police picked him up and

:05:46. > :05:50.then gave him a lift to a bus stop but he never got on a bus. Instead,

:05:51. > :05:55.he made his way to the train station to catch a train to Chippenham ` a

:05:56. > :05:59.journey he never completed. Desperate to find him, the family

:06:00. > :06:04.launched their own search and appealed for help. Five days later,

:06:05. > :06:09.Tom's body was found by the railway line near Chippenham station. Police

:06:10. > :06:13.have now told the family things could have been done differently and

:06:14. > :06:18.Tom's body perhaps found sooner, sparing the family days of

:06:19. > :06:20.uncertainty. They've now officially complained about the police contact

:06:21. > :06:26.with Tom on the night he went missing and their search. Wiltshire

:06:27. > :06:30.police have already investigated their conduct because they had

:06:31. > :06:36.contact with Tom does before his death. They told us lessons had been

:06:37. > :06:41.learned. They're now reinvestigating themselves because of the family

:06:42. > :06:45.complaint. The events surrounding Tom's death still remain a mystery.

:06:46. > :06:49.An inquest next year may provide some answers for his family ` a

:06:50. > :06:54.family trying to come to terms with losing a brother, a son and husband.

:06:55. > :06:59.The big Christmas getaway on the roads is expected to start this

:07:00. > :07:02.weekend. Air traffic control company NATS says 5,800 flights will be

:07:03. > :07:06.handled today ` the busiest day in the festive period. But for many

:07:07. > :07:15.rail passengers, it looking like a Christmas of delays and replacement

:07:16. > :07:20.buses. Here at Reading, buses will replace

:07:21. > :07:27.trains on many services over several days. The works are on 15 different

:07:28. > :07:31.sites. We'll have over 1000 people working on Christmas Day and Boxing

:07:32. > :07:37.Day and we will reopen parts of the network on the 27th. For some

:07:38. > :07:43.passengers through the Thames Valley and down to Basingstoke, that will

:07:44. > :07:47.mean more buses instead of trains. We've got significant work going on

:07:48. > :07:50.here at Reading. It's not as much disruption as in previous years but

:07:51. > :07:55.if you're travelling to Basingstoke, we advise customers to

:07:56. > :08:00.check before they travel because there are some bus replacement

:08:01. > :08:05.services. South West trains will have some changes, too. There is

:08:06. > :08:09.major work at Waterloo, Britain's busiest station, with nine of the 19

:08:10. > :08:15.platforms out of action for a few days. The advice for all Christmas `

:08:16. > :08:20.period passengers is to check carefully before you travel.

:08:21. > :08:24.A 70`year`old man is in hospital with life`threatening injuries after

:08:25. > :08:27.he was hit by a car in Aylesbury. It happened on a zebra crossing at just

:08:28. > :08:30.after 10.30 this morning in Camborne Avenue. Police are appealing for

:08:31. > :08:35.witnesses, and anyone who saw a blue Vauxhall Corsa in the area.

:08:36. > :08:39.A road in Oxfordshire that collapsed 12 months ago after weeks of heavy

:08:40. > :08:43.rain has been reopened. The A4183 Oxford Road was shut after a 200ft

:08:44. > :08:49.section was split in two by a landslip. Repairs to the road cost

:08:50. > :08:52.?1 million. The council has apologised for the inconvenience `

:08:53. > :08:57.but said fixing the problem was an enormous task.

:08:58. > :09:00.A protest has been held outside the job centre in Milton Keynes, against

:09:01. > :09:03.benefit cuts. The group, called Milton Keynes Against The Cuts,

:09:04. > :09:06.wants to end targets for staff who remove benefits from claimants. The

:09:07. > :09:10.Department for Work and Pensions says sanctions are only used as a

:09:11. > :09:19.last resort and it does not set targets for staff. We've got one of

:09:20. > :09:24.the least generous benefit systems of the whole of Europe. People often

:09:25. > :09:28.don't know that and we get a lot of press and propaganda about how many

:09:29. > :09:31.people are claiming benefits and so on. But I think it's getting less

:09:32. > :09:35.and less fair as time goes on. A second attempt to row the

:09:36. > :09:37.Atlantic's being made by a teenager from Appleford in Oxfordshire this

:09:38. > :09:41.weekend. Eoin Hartwright's first attempt failed two weeks ago after

:09:42. > :09:44.an issue with the crew involved. But the 16`year`old will set off again

:09:45. > :09:47.from the Canary Islands this Sunday. It's hoped the journey will take

:09:48. > :09:53.around 40 days. It's raising money for the charities Helen Douglas

:09:54. > :09:58.House, and Cool Earth. That's all from me for the moment.

:09:59. > :10:01.I'll be back at 1020 5p. Here's Sally Taylor.

:10:02. > :10:02.rise. Unions labelled the increases as an "embarrasment to higher

:10:03. > :10:12.education" and are considering action.

:10:13. > :10:16.Still to come in this evening's South Today, Alexis has warnings of

:10:17. > :10:19.some lively weather on the way. Very wet and windy weather in the next 24

:10:20. > :10:29.hours but what about Christmas? I will have a full forecast later in

:10:30. > :10:32.the programme. Talks are ongoing to try to continue

:10:33. > :10:36.shipbuilding in Portsmouth. It follows BAE's decision last month to

:10:37. > :10:40.shut its yard in the city, with the loss of over 1,000 jobs. BBC South

:10:41. > :10:43.has been told at least 15 businesses have now expressed an interest in

:10:44. > :10:46.using the shipyard and taking on some skilled workers. The Portsmouth

:10:47. > :10:50.North MP, Penny Mordaunt, says there's still a lot to do for the

:10:51. > :10:52.plan to succeed. What we have to do is a lot of hard work. The

:10:53. > :10:57.nitty`gritty of making all of that happened. Working out quickly what

:10:58. > :11:00.those overheads will be for those businesses so they can put those

:11:01. > :11:06.plans together. Getting the local authority to do some things to

:11:07. > :11:09.incentivise companies. We have all of the ingredients there, we need to

:11:10. > :11:19.make it happen. I am optimistic about the future.

:11:20. > :11:23.Dorset Police are to share services with Devon and Cornwall Police in a

:11:24. > :11:27.bid to save money. Both forces say its not a merger, but have warned

:11:28. > :11:30.that some jobs could go. A review will now look at which services in

:11:31. > :11:40.particular will be affected. Senior officers hope any savings will help

:11:41. > :11:43.to protect front line policing. Radical changes are being made to

:11:44. > :11:46.the way people with diabetes are treated in parts of Berkshire. The

:11:47. > :11:49.National Diabetes Audit shows too many diabetics in Reading and the

:11:50. > :11:53.Wokingham area have been getting inadequate care. Services in the

:11:54. > :11:55.area have ranked among the worst in the country. Nikki Mitchell reports.

:11:56. > :12:00.I have cut out saturated fats. Rates of diabetes are soaring. This is one

:12:01. > :12:05.patient who has been diagnosed in the West Berkshire alone. Instead of

:12:06. > :12:11.being told what to do by the experts, the experts are teaching

:12:12. > :12:16.her how to help herself. We need a plan. We need to get your

:12:17. > :12:20.cholesterol down. I decide my goals and I can keep to them. Where is,

:12:21. > :12:25.realistically, if somebody else did you a goal, you cannot always stick

:12:26. > :12:28.to it. The information is the thing we are giving them and this is like

:12:29. > :12:36.receiving a bank statement if you like. You receive that in your post,

:12:37. > :12:40.there is no way of getting a way that it belongs to you. You are

:12:41. > :12:45.working together, putting the person with diabetes in the driving seat. I

:12:46. > :12:52.feel better and I feel happy about coming here. I used to come and was

:12:53. > :12:57.nervous. Which of the following foods have the largest effect on

:12:58. > :13:04.blood sugar levels? Classes and games are showing patients have to

:13:05. > :13:12.stay well. The doctor who helped diabetic limb `` diabetic Olympian

:13:13. > :13:20.Sir Steve Redgrave when golf has been modernising consultant. He runs

:13:21. > :13:26.hospital clinics and tours surgeries, teaching nurses have to

:13:27. > :13:30.deal with their patients. They can have their care put into place

:13:31. > :13:34.locally without going into a diabetes Centre as may have happened

:13:35. > :13:36.before. Patients who come into the diabetes centre can be referred back

:13:37. > :13:43.to the general practitioner but they have a specialist to review their

:13:44. > :13:54.cases. It is costing over half ?1 million a year but is diabetes can

:13:55. > :14:04.have further impact, the cost of not carrying out these improvements,

:14:05. > :14:08.would be much worse. It will be horrible for them. We don't want

:14:09. > :14:11.that to happen to them and we don't want to have to pay for it if and

:14:12. > :14:16.when it does. So actually it is a win`win. There are now hopes that

:14:17. > :14:22.this way of treating diabetics could be used to treat people suffering

:14:23. > :14:24.from other long`term conditions such as asthma.

:14:25. > :14:28.Now, chances are you've probably ordered some presents over the

:14:29. > :14:32.internet this year. Our love affair with online shopping shows no sign

:14:33. > :14:35.of cooling off. And many of those items have to get to us before the

:14:36. > :14:38.big day next week. Our Business Correspondent, Alastair Fee, has

:14:39. > :14:47.been to meet a new company in Basingstoke trying to get in on the

:14:48. > :14:50.internet delivery act. It is selling very, very well.

:14:51. > :14:53.At a product meeting, OnBuy, the UK's newest online market place

:14:54. > :14:58.discuss some of their most popular toys. It's their first Christmas and

:14:59. > :15:07.have on trial 100,000 items. That might sound a lot but Amazon has

:15:08. > :15:10.millions. We sell other people's products. Sellers come to us with

:15:11. > :15:20.their infantry and we list them for sale. We do not actually sell items

:15:21. > :15:28.ourselves. The website has an emphasis on buying British. From a

:15:29. > :15:30.warehouse in Wales, items are picked, packed and sent out across

:15:31. > :15:33.the country. Hundreds of products leave here every day. We have plans

:15:34. > :15:40.to preserve another building directly opposite where we are now.

:15:41. > :15:44.When this grows, we know we have a facility to take hold. It's

:15:45. > :15:47.certainly ambitious but they view Amazon as a rival. The online giant,

:15:48. > :15:50.together with other multinational firms like Starbucks and Google have

:15:51. > :15:56.been criticised for paying minimal tax here in the UK. The controversy

:15:57. > :16:05.surrounding Amazon is adding to our message that we are going to pay UK

:16:06. > :16:10.tax and try and ensure that the public sees OnBuy as a viable

:16:11. > :16:14.marketplace. YOYOTech make gaming machines and are among the first

:16:15. > :16:17.retailers to choose to sell via the website. Onbuy makes money through a

:16:18. > :16:20.monthly charge and by taking a percentage of every item sold. Both

:16:21. > :16:31.are cheaper for the retailer than selling on Amazon. If you are pro

:16:32. > :16:37.UK, which OnBuy are, they pay UK taxes, they will grow in the UK and

:16:38. > :16:41.create UK jobs which strengthens our economy, which makes our business

:16:42. > :16:44.stronger as more people buy from us as well. This Christmas, the big

:16:45. > :16:47.sellers have been magic kits and video games. Compared to Amazon, who

:16:48. > :16:55.have thousands of employees in the UK, OnBuy has begun with just 26.

:16:56. > :17:04.The ambition is to take 5% of Amazon's market share, a massive

:17:05. > :17:08.?190 million in sales. Don't worry, that big box for you but I have

:17:09. > :17:17.bought will be delivered before Christmas Day. Yours is all ready in

:17:18. > :17:25.the post. Absolutely! Shall we talk football?

:17:26. > :17:30.A little critters present to any anxious Southampton fans today.

:17:31. > :17:33.Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino says he's had no approach

:17:34. > :17:36.to speak to Tottenham about becoming the club's new boss. Pochettino's

:17:37. > :17:39.name had been listed among the possible contenders to replace

:17:40. > :17:42.Andres Villas Boas who was sacked on Monday. Saints face Spurs on Sunday

:17:43. > :17:50.at St Mary's with Pochettino focussing on keeping his side's fine

:17:51. > :17:53.Premier League season on track. Perhaps the results of late have not

:17:54. > :17:57.gone our way but I'm happy in the sense that the team has been playing

:17:58. > :18:02.how we want the team to play. The schedule is tough as you go into the

:18:03. > :18:07.Christmas period. I am happy overall the performance. Perhaps not so

:18:08. > :18:10.happy with the results. Tomorrow's action sees Reading host

:18:11. > :18:13.Wigan in the Championship at the Madejski stadium. The Royals head

:18:14. > :18:15.into the festive season fifth in the table.

:18:16. > :18:20.Elsewhere, Brighton are at home, Bournemouth are on the road, more on

:18:21. > :18:24.the Cherries shortly. There are home games for both MK

:18:25. > :18:27.Dons and Swindon in League One, while the leaders Oxford are at York

:18:28. > :18:30.in League Two, Portsmouth travel to Bristol Rovers. Full commentary on

:18:31. > :18:32.BBC local radio and the goals tomorrow night on the Football

:18:33. > :18:35.League Show. Hampshire cricket have signed Sussex

:18:36. > :18:38.batsman Joe Gatting. Gatting, son of Steve, who played for Brighton in

:18:39. > :18:41.the 1983 cup final and himself played professional football before

:18:42. > :18:44.concentrating on cricket, has signed a two`year contract at the Ageas

:18:45. > :18:47.Bowl. London Irish will hand a debut to

:18:48. > :18:51.former South African World Cup winner CJ Van der Linde in their

:18:52. > :18:55.Premiership match at Sale tonight. He comes into the front row for an

:18:56. > :18:59.Irish side which is struggling again this season. They are 11th in the

:19:00. > :19:01.table with just two wins to their name.

:19:02. > :19:03.We go back to football now and Bournenmouth are at Sheffield

:19:04. > :19:07.Wednesday tomorrow. Eddie Howe is hoping his side can pull off a

:19:08. > :19:10.second consecutive away win, in this the club's first season back in the

:19:11. > :19:19.second tier. The festive season brings five games in 15 days. You

:19:20. > :19:24.come into this period and you have a lot of games in a short period of

:19:25. > :19:29.time. Certainly, a good critters period can give you momentum into

:19:30. > :19:31.January. That is what we are looking to do.

:19:32. > :19:34.It has been some year for Bournemouth. The club enjoyed

:19:35. > :19:38.promotion in April and in July fans were treated to a glamour game like

:19:39. > :19:42.no other. With the summer heat wave at its peak, 12,000 fans were at

:19:43. > :19:46.Dean Court to see Real Madrid come to town. It was one of the South's

:19:47. > :19:50.sporting highlights of the year and I've been back to Dean Court to meet

:19:51. > :19:57.a couple of people with special memories. We all have our own memory

:19:58. > :20:00.of that balmy night in July. I remember as Ray are Madrid came

:20:01. > :20:07.through the dressing rooms. All of the big`name stars. They turned out

:20:08. > :20:10.to be real gentleman. I remember Rinaldo taking a free kick and the

:20:11. > :20:19.ball came straight at me and broke my arm. I remember thousands of

:20:20. > :20:26.people lining the bus route as Real Madrid arrived at Dean Court. It was

:20:27. > :20:32.the game Bournemouth fans thought they would never see. The glitz and

:21:23. > :21:29.cheap, so I wanted to get our money 's worth. Charlie Stayt, eager to

:21:30. > :21:36.not miss a minute. Also watching was John Harris, who has worked here for

:21:37. > :21:45.years. I never thought it would happen at all, not with the status

:21:46. > :21:53.of Real Madrid. Bournemouth lost the match 6`0. Ronaldo scored twice.

:21:54. > :21:59.Charlie had broken his arm into `` his arm in two places. One of their

:22:07. > :22:12.would be better soon. They said they Rinaldo shut over. They flew into

:22:13. > :22:15.Bournemouth today and they fly straight out tonight. They leave
