:00:00. > :00:09.Hello, and welcome to South Today from Oxford. In tonight's programme:
:00:10. > :00:13.The rising cost of rail travel. How the New Year will bring new prices `
:00:14. > :00:19.with some commuters paying ?140 more for their season tickets.
:00:20. > :00:21.Also tonight ` hoping for the gift of life. The 3`year`old boy who
:00:22. > :00:27.needs multiple organ transplants because his liver, pancreas and
:00:28. > :00:30.bowel are failing. And later on, popping the question
:00:31. > :00:45.whilst Christmas shopping, but does she say yes?
:00:46. > :00:51.The news was widely expected, but an increase in rail fares from the
:00:52. > :00:54.start of next year was never going to be welcomed by regular commuters
:00:55. > :00:57.` many making their final journeys today before the Christmas break.
:00:58. > :01:00.First Great Western and Chiltern Railways have confirmed their price
:01:01. > :01:06.rises, and Cross Country is also expected to confirm an increase
:01:07. > :01:09.shortly. But the fares are not rising as steeply as they might have
:01:10. > :01:13.done, after the Government imposed new rules and a cap, linking future
:01:14. > :01:23.increases to the rate of inflation. Adina Campbell reports. The trains
:01:24. > :01:29.themselves might not always arrive on time, but the annual fee increase
:01:30. > :01:33.does, much to the frustration of commuters who have little choice but
:01:34. > :01:38.to pay more. With just two days until Christmas, the news that real
:01:39. > :01:42.fears will increase in the New Year has come as unwelcome present. Many
:01:43. > :01:48.commuters travelling from here to London on a regular basis, this
:01:49. > :01:54.season ticket cost them thousands of pounds per year. Certainly, my
:01:55. > :01:58.salary will not go up by 3%, so I will lose out in real terms over the
:01:59. > :02:04.year. There comes a tipping point, doesn't there, when it becomes
:02:05. > :02:10.cheaper to move to London and other banking it. I don't really think I
:02:11. > :02:17.could complain too much about that. On the other hand, this is rep of
:02:18. > :02:25.Britain. For 11 years running, commuters have dealt with the above
:02:26. > :02:29.inflation rise. Just weeks ago, the government stepped in, rushing
:02:30. > :02:35.through regulations to limit the train company's power to increase
:02:36. > :02:43.fears. It has caused First Great Western abandon its plan to change
:02:44. > :02:46.its fear structure. Changing the formula is something that will
:02:47. > :02:53.likely encourage more people onto the railway and make the cost of
:02:54. > :02:59.travelling by rail cheaper. That is a good thing. Next year's price rise
:03:00. > :03:03.may be less than anticipated, but real users still say it will
:03:04. > :03:14.disadvantage low to medium earners whose income does not rise in line
:03:15. > :03:17.with inflation. An inquest into the death of Jayden
:03:18. > :03:20.Parkinson has been opened ` and adjourned. It's still not clear how
:03:21. > :03:23.the 17`year`old from Didcot died. Her body was discovered hidden
:03:24. > :03:26.inside a grave at All Saints churchyard in the town last
:03:27. > :03:29.Wednesday. An initial postmortem examination failed to establish the
:03:30. > :03:31.cause of death. Detectives say further tests could take several
:03:32. > :03:34.weeks to complete. Jayden's former boyfriend, 22`year`old Ben Blakeley
:03:35. > :03:37.from Reading, has been charged with her murder. A 17`year`old boy from
:03:38. > :03:40.Didcot has been charged with perverting the course of justice.
:03:41. > :03:43.People out partying in Swindon over the Christmas period are being
:03:44. > :03:46.warned to steer clear of drugs often called "legal highs," which police
:03:47. > :03:48.believe are becoming more easily available. They're particularly
:03:49. > :03:52.worried about three new substances which are said to be circulating in
:03:53. > :03:58.the area. Back in July, 23`year`old Christopher Scott died after taking
:03:59. > :04:01.AMT tablets in the town. Our reporter Jessica Cooper is here with
:04:02. > :04:09.more details. What does this latest warning from the police say? They
:04:10. > :04:15.say it is difficult to know what chemicals are in some of these
:04:16. > :04:19.drugs, and they haven't been tested, whether they are illegal is also
:04:20. > :04:27.question. The warning about three substances that they now are in use
:04:28. > :04:33.in Swindon. They are MDVP, which is a class B stimulant drug, PVP, which
:04:34. > :04:37.police say is being sold in crystal form, and another countries it is
:04:38. > :04:44.actually a controlled drug after being linked to deaths. And also
:04:45. > :04:51.Etizolam, which they say if mixed with other drugs or alcohol, could
:04:52. > :04:56.increase the risk of overdose. MP Robert Buckland is working to ban a
:04:57. > :05:04.particular legal high, isn't he? Yes, he is looking to ban EMT, which
:05:05. > :05:10.is the drug that killed Christopher Scott. The government is reviewing
:05:11. > :05:15.how it classifies legal highs and looking at making it easier to have
:05:16. > :05:22.temporary bans. But the police in Swindon are advising, in the rush up
:05:23. > :05:25.`` run`up to Christmas especially, to avoid legal highs and advise them
:05:26. > :05:32.if they know where they are being sold.
:05:33. > :05:34.Thames Valley Police have arrested 134 people on suspicion of
:05:35. > :05:37.drink`driving in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire since the start of
:05:38. > :05:41.December. Police are targeting drivers on the way home from nights
:05:42. > :05:44.out or the morning after as part of their 'Is It Worth The Risk?'
:05:45. > :05:47.campaign. 114 people in the Thames Valley have been charged.
:05:48. > :05:49.Making their Christmas wish come true would inevitably mean
:05:50. > :05:52.heartbreak for another family. With growing numbers of people on the
:05:53. > :05:55.register awaiting organ transplants, there's a fresh appeal for potential
:05:56. > :05:58.donors to come forward ` people prepared to declare their
:05:59. > :06:01.willingness to help others in the event of their own death. Angie
:06:02. > :06:04.Walker's spent the day with a Buckinghamshire family whose
:06:05. > :06:07.seriously ill son has come home for the holidays.
:06:08. > :06:12.3`year`old Rocco Seagrove has spent much of his short life in hospital.
:06:13. > :06:20.He desperately needs a new liver, pancreas and bowel. That means he
:06:21. > :06:24.can't eat or go the toilet normally. His immune system is so low he can't
:06:25. > :06:31.leave the house, and spends his life hooked up to machines. It's very,
:06:32. > :06:37.very serious. If he gets any infections or bugs, he can die.
:06:38. > :06:42.Unfortunately, he does suffer a lot of infections. So, really, the
:06:43. > :06:49.sooner we get the donor, and the call... Fingers crossed... Without a
:06:50. > :06:57.donor, unfortunately, he won't survive. The number of people
:06:58. > :07:01.needing an organ transplant is going up all the time, but not enough
:07:02. > :07:05.potential donors are making their wishes known, which means every
:07:06. > :07:19.year, hundreds of life`saving organs are going to waste. We will always
:07:20. > :07:22.check the organ donor register first, but because someone isn't
:07:23. > :07:26.registered doesn't mean they didn't want to become a donor. So we go and
:07:27. > :07:29.speak to those families and ask those families to make a decision
:07:30. > :07:33.about organ donation, but we know only 31% of those families agree to
:07:34. > :07:36.it going ahead. There are currently 598 people in our region waiting for
:07:37. > :07:42.a transplant. 135 people's lives were saved in the past year, thanks
:07:43. > :07:49.to a donor. But 16 people here died in the past year because of the
:07:50. > :07:54.shortage of organs. It would just be a huge, life`saving relief for him.
:07:55. > :07:59.He would eventually be able to eat and drink ` that's the aim. And have
:08:00. > :08:02.a life ` he'd be able to go to nursery and to become a normal
:08:03. > :08:10.little boy, which he's not at the moment, and which he deserves.
:08:11. > :08:14.A man dressed in a Santa costume has carried out an armed robbery at a
:08:15. > :08:18.branch of Next in Oxford. He threatened staff with a knife at the
:08:19. > :08:21.store on the Oxford Retail Park in Cowley just after 9.30 this morning.
:08:22. > :08:24.The branch was closed briefly, and police say one member of staff was
:08:25. > :08:28.left badly shaken. The man who carried out the robbery is thought
:08:29. > :08:31.to be his 30s. He escaped on a bike towards the Blackbird Leys Bridge.
:08:32. > :08:34.It's crucial, life`changing work, but getting a wheelchair tweaked and
:08:35. > :08:38.adjusted to the individual needs of its user can take time. In
:08:39. > :08:41.Oxfordshire, there was a wait of up to 11 months. But the backlog's been
:08:42. > :08:44.cut ` and it's making a huge difference to the lives of people
:08:45. > :08:48.like Richard Payne, from Appleford near Didcot. As Helen Catt reports,
:08:49. > :08:51.Richard's among the many to benefit from a turnaround time that's now
:08:52. > :08:56.just five weeks. Richard Payne spends every waking
:08:57. > :08:58.hour in his wheelchair. He has multiple sclerosis and the chair has
:08:59. > :09:09.been customised to fit his individual needs. Deceit physics
:09:10. > :09:18.ended `` this seat is extended, because I have long legs and need
:09:19. > :09:23.support. I'm able to get closer to the table, which makes eating much
:09:24. > :09:27.easier. When Richard got his first electric wheelchair five years ago
:09:28. > :09:30.is, some patients were having to wait as long as 11 months, and
:09:31. > :09:37.having the wrong chair can be difficult. If it is not designed for
:09:38. > :09:40.your posture, your posture will deteriorate and you will be
:09:41. > :09:47.uncomfortable, and get pressure sores, so it is essential that the
:09:48. > :09:51.design of wheelchair specifically for your needs.
:09:52. > :09:58.Oxford University hospitals trust was giving funding `` was given
:09:59. > :10:02.funding to keep bring the waiting time down to five weeks. Staff have
:10:03. > :10:08.agreed to work overtime to speed up procedures. If you have the capacity
:10:09. > :10:13.right, then when you reduce the waiting list, you can maintain it.
:10:14. > :10:18.That's what we've been able to do. We have got rid of the old, as it
:10:19. > :10:24.were, of all the people who were awaiting longer than five weeks ``
:10:25. > :10:28.got rid of the backlog. But at the same time, we are seeing some
:10:29. > :10:33.changes as well, hopefully to improve things even further. Richard
:10:34. > :10:36.benefited from the faster system when he had his chair of the place
:10:37. > :10:39.this month. The hospital says it is confident it
:10:40. > :10:42.can keep the waiting time down for patients like him.
:10:43. > :10:45.That's all from me for the moment. The highlights of the weekend's
:10:46. > :10:49.football from Oxford United, Swindon Town and the MK Dons is coming up.
:10:50. > :11:03.I'll be back at 10.25pm. Now, here's Sally Taylor.
:11:04. > :11:07.shoppers had tried to take advantage, the wind and rain had
:11:08. > :11:16.kept most people away. Still to come on South Today:
:11:17. > :11:23.Overtakes you didn't get to see this year.
:11:24. > :11:30.Tony is here now. Moving on to sport. What is this about the
:11:31. > :11:33.Royals? It has been going on for a few
:11:34. > :11:38.weeks, one of those stories that goes under the radar. I thought it
:11:39. > :11:45.worth looking at in more detail. There are a few question marks over
:11:46. > :11:48.Redding. Reading chairman Sir John Madejski
:11:49. > :11:51.acknowledged that the club is looking for new investment in an
:11:52. > :11:54.interview with the BBC this weekend. It comes as Royals fans question the
:11:55. > :11:58.whereabouts of their absent owner and talks continue behind the scenes
:11:59. > :12:00.which could lead to a takeover. The long servants of Redding football
:12:01. > :12:01.club were in the directors box on Saturday. Chairman Sir John Madejski
:12:02. > :12:15.at the chairman... Chief Executive. BBC South has learned that the
:12:16. > :12:21.Royals are talking to potential investors. Formal talks have been
:12:22. > :12:26.going on for some weeks now. The current owner owns 51%, he should
:12:27. > :12:31.have bought the remaining 49% from St John Madejski Stadium, but the
:12:32. > :12:34.deal was not finalised. Now he may be ready to sell up.
:12:35. > :12:44.We're looking for potential investors, and that never stops.
:12:45. > :12:47.Are you making headway among? I think so, I think we are raking very
:12:48. > :12:50.good progress indeed. On the field, they lost their second
:12:51. > :12:57.consecutive home game, caught napping by Wigan who were to nil up
:12:58. > :13:03.after only 12 minutes. They missed a penalty in the second
:13:04. > :13:08.half, but then another Russian of the club headed one back. Delay to
:13:09. > :13:12.hit the post, but Wigan held on. Is it fair to say you are a little in
:13:13. > :13:16.the dark as to what the long`term plan can be?
:13:17. > :13:23.A long`term plan is to get Redding football club into the Premier
:13:24. > :13:26.League. It takes is a little bit of time to get it right. We'll get
:13:27. > :13:30.there because we know what we want to achieve.
:13:31. > :13:35.The games come thick and fast over Christmas. The names in the
:13:36. > :13:40.directors box to be changing, too. Want to watch over 2014, and there's
:13:41. > :13:45.more analysis on that on the BBC website.
:13:46. > :13:48.After a blistering start to the Premier League season, Southampton
:13:49. > :13:51.are now without a win in six games they led at home yesterday against
:13:52. > :13:56.Spurs through Adam Lallana. Emmanuel Adebayor volleyed in the first of
:13:57. > :13:59.his two goals on the day to level. Jos Hoiveld put through his own net,
:14:00. > :14:06.but Saints bounced straight back, Lallana set up Lambert for 2`2. But
:14:07. > :14:11.Adebayor got the winner. Southampton are ninth.
:14:12. > :14:23.And so to something of an MK Dons revival to
:14:24. > :14:32.report. Stephen Gleeson and a breathtaking opening goal. The
:14:33. > :14:35.second goal came from Ben Rees. Having Patrick Bamford on loan from
:14:36. > :14:41.Chelsea has been brilliant for the MK Dons, and he scored his 15th goal
:14:42. > :14:46.of the season to make it 3`0. He could be heading back to London, so
:14:47. > :14:59.enjoy him while he is here. At Swindon, it started well, with a
:15:00. > :15:04.goal in the first half. Swindon hit back, and then a cool finish from
:15:05. > :15:11.Michael story gave Town some festive cheer. Something has clicked with
:15:12. > :15:14.Oxford United, the manager says some of his players
:15:15. > :15:17.had ten days to save their careers. He criticised the culture of morning
:15:18. > :15:21.and said he has to stop it quickly. Basingstoke Bison got the better of
:15:22. > :15:24.Bracknell Bees in a Premier League ice hockey encounter decided by only
:15:25. > :15:27.one goal on Saturday night. Joe Miller scored what turned out to be
:15:28. > :15:31.the winner as Basingstoke secured second spot going into the festive
:15:32. > :15:34.period. They won the second game of the double`header 5`0 on Sunday.
:15:35. > :15:39.Just a point behind the Bison are the Guildford Flames. We look
:15:40. > :15:45.forward to a busy period of sport over Christmas. Lots of goals, match
:15:46. > :15:51.of the day, the football league show, and I'll be here on the 27th
:15:52. > :15:56.with the full football round`up. The weather is full outside, and it
:15:57. > :15:59.still making the headlines today. And if you look back over the year,
:16:00. > :16:04.it has dominated the headlines this year on many occasions.
:16:05. > :16:11.Snow in January and all sorts, didn't we? . Alexis Green has been
:16:12. > :16:16.looking back at some of the weather extremes.
:16:17. > :16:23.It really windy here on the Isle of Wight, but nowhere near as windy as
:16:24. > :16:28.it was back in October. That brought winds of 99 mph. Across the
:16:29. > :16:32.Atlantic, to weather systems merged and began to pick up speed as they
:16:33. > :16:38.were swept along by the jet stream. On the 27th of October the storm hit
:16:39. > :16:42.southern England, and it wasn't trees that bore the brunt. In
:16:43. > :16:47.Christchurch a family was walking with a shock. Four o'clock in the
:16:48. > :16:48.morning, my daughter started screaming saying a tree had come
:16:49. > :16:55.down on the road. I looked out the window and there it
:16:56. > :17:00.was. It has crushed three cars. When he starts to violently rotate a
:17:01. > :17:02.tornado can form, and evidence suggests that is what happened
:17:03. > :17:08.earlier this year on healing island.
:17:09. > :17:10.I just heard and felt this howling wind and it felt like the roof was
:17:11. > :17:16.going to come through the house. Then it was just gone in a blast.
:17:17. > :17:22.On a smaller scale, rotation at their country this phenomenon,
:17:23. > :17:26.commonly known as a duster. Mac they commonly car on sunny days, and this
:17:27. > :17:29.one was filmed in Basingstoke in September.
:17:30. > :17:33.I had my camera with me and I was about 40 feet away from it. I was
:17:34. > :17:39.beginning to get covered by the falling debris, but it just tracked
:17:40. > :17:43.diagonally and went through this gap with was a couple of hedges and that
:17:44. > :17:47.was it, it was gone. Remember the long hot summer?
:17:48. > :17:54.High`pressure settled over the UK in July, sending temperatures over 28
:17:55. > :17:59.Celsius for 19 consecutive days... It was nice to come out and get a
:18:00. > :18:03.nice breeze. It's too hot for me, I can't do anything.
:18:04. > :18:05.I need a siesta in the afternoon. And build services reported
:18:06. > :18:11.increased call outs, but to resign was booming.
:18:12. > :18:16.This year was all about the staycation. Do not wish you were in
:18:17. > :18:25.Spain? Now.
:18:26. > :18:31.Animals needed help to stay. Mac luckily she's not pink, lots of pink
:18:32. > :18:34.pigs can get some/ . But before the warm summer, easterly
:18:35. > :18:38.winds brought one of our coldest spring is on record. At the
:18:39. > :18:45.beginning of the year, snow brought much of the South to the halt, or at
:18:46. > :18:49.least two more leisurely pursuits. Extreme weather always produces some
:18:50. > :18:51.great photos. Take a look at this lightning photographed by South
:18:52. > :19:10.today viewers back in October. You look back on the weather and
:19:11. > :19:16.think, I remember that, but looking back at that, I don't remember much
:19:17. > :19:20.of it. I remember at the cricket at the role, cricketers were wearing
:19:21. > :19:24.hats and gloves. As you know, every day we bring you
:19:25. > :19:26.a high quality service. But sometimes it doesn't always go
:19:27. > :19:32.according to plan. Here are our South Today bloopers
:19:33. > :19:35.for this year. Enjoy! And join me later as we look at
:19:36. > :19:43.boulders from Mars and rockets and vacuum cleaners. I'm going to bring
:19:44. > :19:49.you an idiot's gate to space. Did I say vacuum cleaners?
:19:50. > :19:58.Journey later in the programme when I'll get... Straight in the eye.
:19:59. > :20:04.That's what we do, we make the budget up as we go along. No, no,
:20:05. > :20:30.no, no. Will more people be getting the
:20:31. > :20:41.centres? To To HE LAUGHS I'm so sorry.
:20:42. > :20:47.What's it like, Chris? Or even Steve, his brother.
:20:48. > :20:52.There's none need to get too close. That's fine. I'm going to back away
:20:53. > :21:14.a little bit. I had a little funny turn there, it got all exciting.
:21:15. > :21:23.Like this? SHE LAUGHS bloodlust. That made any environment much
:21:24. > :21:27.easier to working. Is a big need for a local shop and
:21:28. > :21:31.as part of Hampshire was mac I think so.
:21:32. > :21:38.I think there is a big need for a local shop with local food a day
:21:39. > :21:46.reasonable price. Rian Shropshire here?
:21:47. > :21:51.We're in Berkshire, actually. And those are the ones we can show
:21:52. > :21:54.you. I want to show you this. It's Christmas shopping that turned into
:21:55. > :22:06.a wedding proposal for a one`woman on Saturday. If flash mob broke out
:22:07. > :22:11.into a dance. The groom to be got up and joined in as he went into the
:22:12. > :22:15.store with his girlfriend, Laura. Your tower there on the pretext of
:22:16. > :22:20.doing some festive shopping. Guess what? At the end of the song, he
:22:21. > :22:29.does this dash he gets down on one knee and pops the question. And it
:22:30. > :22:38.was... It has got to be. Yes. Congratulations, Laura and Daniel.
