:00:00. > :00:00.colder. It could be short lived. That is all from the BBC's

:00:00. > :00:12.Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford.

:00:13. > :00:15.In tonight's programme: Oxford United's Wilder days are over.

:00:16. > :00:19.One of the longest serving manager's in football has left with the club,

:00:20. > :00:22.we assess the impact he has made in his five`year reign and ask what

:00:23. > :00:26.next for United. It was a big decision. I Iain Percy

:00:27. > :00:29.enjoyed myself, the support was first class.

:00:30. > :00:38.Also, it's charged with smoothing out the economy so why is private

:00:39. > :00:42.sector employment is falling? And faster than anywhere else in the UK

:00:43. > :00:45.in one city in our region? Further frustration for businesses

:00:46. > :00:48.and travellers. As work on a bridge over the Thames is delayed.

:00:49. > :01:02.And later, on the buses, we're with the artist who has a ticket to ride

:01:03. > :01:06.for the sake of art. He was one of the longest serving

:01:07. > :01:10.managers in football but after five years at the helm with Oxford United

:01:11. > :01:15.Chris Wilder has gone. His rink included in messy circumstances with

:01:16. > :01:20.a claim and counterclaim for a settlement was reached. While he had

:01:21. > :01:24.already taken over at Northampton Town, United have been left

:01:25. > :01:28.searching for a replacement. The end of an era. By the time

:01:29. > :01:34.Saturday 's victory over Torquay was over Chris Wilder knew his time at

:01:35. > :01:37.Oxford United was as well. Within 48 hours he would be unveiled as the

:01:38. > :01:42.manager of the football the's bottom club, the security of the three and

:01:43. > :01:47.a half year contract going on the way to explain why he would leave

:01:48. > :01:51.United for a job at Northampton Town.

:01:52. > :01:54.I have got my own reasons, personal and professional. Maybe it is the

:01:55. > :01:58.right time. I have been there for five years. Maybe the car was

:01:59. > :02:04.driving itself is on its own, maybe I needed that new challenge. Oxford

:02:05. > :02:10.were pretty tough in their negotiation but we got there.

:02:11. > :02:14.Delighted it is finally done. Chris has done a fantastic job for

:02:15. > :02:21.the football club, no doubt. I see him now as a close friend. I wish

:02:22. > :02:25.him well. The ups and downs of the last 48

:02:26. > :02:30.hours or fitting giving his emotional time in charge of Oxford,

:02:31. > :02:40.beyond doubt the highlight Wembley win in 2010 that restored football

:02:41. > :02:44.league status. Long celebrated victories over local

:02:45. > :02:47.rivals Swindon also brought joy but in other ways progress was too slow

:02:48. > :02:54.for some fans, and his relationship with the owner group VAT is. Now

:02:55. > :03:00.Lenaghan faces his biggest football decision, appointing his successor.

:03:01. > :03:05.Joining me is the chairman of Oxford United's supporters group, was his

:03:06. > :03:08.leaving inevitable? I think it probably was, he wanted more

:03:09. > :03:12.stability, Oxford United wanted to see how the season was going before

:03:13. > :03:16.activating next year in his contract.

:03:17. > :03:20.We saw some memorable moments with him at the helm, how significant is

:03:21. > :03:25.his departure? It is a massive decision. I know a

:03:26. > :03:29.lot of firms working to see him go, a lot looking to see him stay. The

:03:30. > :03:32.key thing now is getting the next replacement right, not forgetting

:03:33. > :03:37.the great memories we had. He goes to the bottom club, Oxford

:03:38. > :03:42.United find themselves in the play`off places. Do you think Oxford

:03:43. > :03:47.United will be rocked by his departure?

:03:48. > :03:50.That depends on how quickly and who comes in. You got to look to the

:03:51. > :03:55.owner to get the decision right, it is a key decision. A great chance of

:03:56. > :04:00.promotion. The players we have got our good professionals. All we need

:04:01. > :04:02.is to get a guy that isn't a polarising character, can push is

:04:03. > :04:08.on. The betting for MK Dons manager,

:04:09. > :04:12.Martin Allen, the former Swindon manager, Paolo Di Canio. As a

:04:13. > :04:18.consensus about who should be the replacement? `` is there a

:04:19. > :04:27.consensus. I think you can write Di Canio off for a start. . Every fan

:04:28. > :04:31.has an opinion but the opinion that matters is the board. All eyes are

:04:32. > :04:38.upon making the decision and hopefully we can push on.

:04:39. > :04:42.We have heard much about how the economic recovery will be driven by

:04:43. > :04:46.the private sector creating new jobs which is why use of a dramatic fall

:04:47. > :04:52.in the number of those jobs in Oxford may come as a concern. It has

:04:53. > :04:59.seen the fastest drop of any major UK city down by 2000 between 2011

:05:00. > :05:01.and 2012, at the same time Swindon 11 is seeing that much`needed

:05:02. > :05:05.private sector investment. Why the difference?

:05:06. > :05:10.The construction industry has been hit hard by the recession but you

:05:11. > :05:16.would not know it here. In the last five years this Swindon firm has

:05:17. > :05:18.taken on an extra 50 staff. Even during the recession that has been a

:05:19. > :05:24.significant amount of building work going on. Over the last four or five

:05:25. > :05:29.years we have increased in size by about 50%. Last year our turnover

:05:30. > :05:33.was 77 million. According to a report out today for every five jobs

:05:34. > :05:38.in Swindon in 2012 four of them were in the private sector. But the same

:05:39. > :05:43.cannot be said for its neighbour Oxford. Here there has been a 4%

:05:44. > :05:48.fall in the number of private sector jobs. That is more than 2000 posts

:05:49. > :05:53.lost, and that is the worst for any UK city or major town. Would you put

:05:54. > :06:00.your head office in Oxford where you know your staff will take good,

:06:01. > :06:05.extra half hour to get into work? Where your customers cannot get in

:06:06. > :06:09.to see you, you will tend to locate somewhere with good transport links.

:06:10. > :06:13.When complete the Regent Circus Development in Swindon will be held

:06:14. > :06:15.to a cinema, restaurants and supermarkets creating in the

:06:16. > :06:24.process, it is claimed, to 1000 new jobs. Why is Swindon succeeding

:06:25. > :06:30.where Oxford isn't? The connectivity to London and other places, but also

:06:31. > :06:33.the availability of the skilled and adaptable workforce. The two main

:06:34. > :06:38.things we hear from the businesses we talk to as to why they are here.

:06:39. > :06:42.This report is by no means all bad news for Oxford, it showed its

:06:43. > :06:46.people are the second most highly qualified in the UK, and levels of

:06:47. > :06:49.inequality in the city are relatively low. But if business is

:06:50. > :06:58.going to boom, there is still plenty of work to be done.

:06:59. > :07:01.Next to night, nearly 25,000 people have signed an online petition

:07:02. > :07:05.demanding the resignation of the Henley councillor who claimed God

:07:06. > :07:09.sent the recent floods because of the government's stance on gay

:07:10. > :07:14.marriage. David Silvester has said he will not stand down from the town

:07:15. > :07:18.council even though he has been suspended by his party. Sarah

:07:19. > :07:23.Butcher, who started the petition, says in her view he isn't fit to

:07:24. > :07:27.represent the people of Henley. We are appealing to him to stand

:07:28. > :07:34.down, we have got nearly 25,000 votes, that should give him a good

:07:35. > :07:38.idea his views are not part of how we feel today. His views makes

:07:39. > :07:43.people feel uncomfortable. We don't want somebody like that are

:07:44. > :07:46.presenting us in Henley. The Templars Square shopping Centre

:07:47. > :07:49.in Cowley in two and had to be closed for a short time after part

:07:50. > :07:53.of its glass ceiling collapsed during heavy rain and strong wind.

:07:54. > :07:57.Nobody was injured in Saturday afternoon's incident and the centre

:07:58. > :08:03.was reopened a few minutes later. Temporary repairs have been carried

:08:04. > :08:06.out on the shops open as normal. 93 man has died following a house

:08:07. > :08:12.fire in Abingdon. Part of Preston Road had to be closed while five

:08:13. > :08:17.entered into the house at 6pm last night. The elderly occupant's death

:08:18. > :08:22.is currently being treated as not explained but it is not suspicious.

:08:23. > :08:26.Work to renovate the Whitchurch toll bridge over the River Thames will

:08:27. > :08:28.now take three months longer to complete than first thought. Drivers

:08:29. > :08:35.have been forced to make if retreating detour since it was

:08:36. > :08:39.closed `` frustrating detour. The work has been disrupted by bad

:08:40. > :08:46.weather and high and fast flowing river doubles.

:08:47. > :08:50.`` levels. Work ground to a halt before

:08:51. > :08:55.Christmas. The project is three months behind schedule. It is the

:08:56. > :09:00.three disappointing, because it is a ten mile trip by car extra if we

:09:01. > :09:05.want to go to Pangbourne. Going through Caversham is a nightmare.

:09:06. > :09:12.Going three touring is not too bad, but we are spending a lot more money

:09:13. > :09:14.on fuel. `` going through Goring. It will have an impact, local

:09:15. > :09:20.businesses are suffering. Another three months will not be what they

:09:21. > :09:24.want to hear. My customers have been really annoyed, it is hit trade

:09:25. > :09:30.quite hard, especially the food outlets. Frustrated, disappointed,

:09:31. > :09:34.but the weather being what it is, record flood levels, the flow is

:09:35. > :09:40.still very high, the contractor cannot go on the river while the

:09:41. > :09:48.River is red bordered by the Environment Agency. The project was

:09:49. > :09:50.aimed to be done in the summer months but the investment agency

:09:51. > :09:55.said no because it would have been too disruptive operators. The

:09:56. > :09:59.contractors say they are confident they are going to get the vertical

:10:00. > :10:05.columns installed in the riverbed by the end of March so this section of

:10:06. > :10:10.the river can be open to voters as planned before Easter. Drivers will

:10:11. > :10:15.have to wait until July. Friends and relatives of the

:10:16. > :10:18.murdered Didcot teenager Jayden Parkinson gathered at the weekend to

:10:19. > :10:21.remember her and give thanks for her life. A special service took place

:10:22. > :10:25.at the church where her body was found last month, hidden in the

:10:26. > :10:29.graveyard. It still isn't clear how she died, or when a funeral service

:10:30. > :10:31.could be held. There is talk of creating a lasting memorial for her

:10:32. > :10:46.in her hometown. They came to remember her, a special

:10:47. > :10:51.service to help the community here say goodbye to Jayden Parkinson. Her

:10:52. > :10:55.family were very aware people in Didcot would have a chance to

:10:56. > :11:01.remember Jayden and give thanks for her life. So they wanted to give

:11:02. > :11:06.them a opportunity to come together to celebrate her and put aside the

:11:07. > :11:11.terrible circumstances surrounding her death. It was the same

:11:12. > :11:15.churchyard where she was found in a disturbed grave. After she went

:11:16. > :11:20.missing more than 100 police officers were involved in the search

:11:21. > :11:24.to find her. Forensic experts combed sites in Didcot and the nearby

:11:25. > :11:29.village of opting until eventually she was found here at All Saints

:11:30. > :11:32.Church. Now those here want the images of the crime scene to be

:11:33. > :11:38.forgotten, and for the church to bring peace again.

:11:39. > :11:44.There is a kind of reclaiming of a space. What is wonderful about these

:11:45. > :11:46.old churches is they have known everything in their history, and

:11:47. > :11:54.they are still here, and they still places of prayer, supremely of hope.

:11:55. > :11:56.Her family have asked the media not to film inside during the service

:11:57. > :12:00.but of the next hour they will listen to some of her favourite

:12:01. > :12:09.songs. School friends are here to pay tribute and at the end her

:12:10. > :12:13.mother is go to thank the community to pay `` for their support. Herrick

:12:14. > :12:21.'s boyfriend has been charged with her murder. A 17`year`old boy from

:12:22. > :12:25.Didcot has been charged with perverting the course of justice. A

:12:26. > :12:32.post`modern hasn't explained how she died but more tests are due to take

:12:33. > :12:36.place. You have seen the Oxford United

:12:37. > :12:39.action on and off the field, the rest of the sports including news of

:12:40. > :12:48.a victory for Swindon in a few minutes.

:12:49. > :12:50.cheaper to make that settlement. And you can see the full story on

:12:51. > :12:54.tonight's Inside Out starting in about 45 minutes here on BBC One.

:12:55. > :13:07.Still to come in this evening's South Today: battered by a tornado.

:13:08. > :13:10.That is what residents believe they witnessed.

:13:11. > :13:13.The Government calls small businesses the lifeblood of the

:13:14. > :13:17.economy. At a major conference today the Prime Minister was keen to show

:13:18. > :13:20.off what he's doing to help them grow. While the political focus has

:13:21. > :13:24.been about reducing red tape ` it's a more familiar problem that still

:13:25. > :13:31.seems to be holding back firms here in the South ` access to finance.

:13:32. > :13:38.Alastair Fee reports. Five Digital has been around for about two years.

:13:39. > :13:44.Their livelihood readily growing. The battle for businesses like them

:13:45. > :13:49.is underway. We focus quite strongly on new businesses, and

:13:50. > :13:54.entrepreneurs. Over the last 12 months, that has definitely changed

:13:55. > :13:57.and has been improving. In London today, the Prime Minister took

:13:58. > :14:01.centre stage at the National conference of the Federation of

:14:02. > :14:09.Small Businesses. The message, nicking things easier by cutting red

:14:10. > :14:13.tape. `` making things easier. Legislation is unbelievably own

:14:14. > :14:20.arrest. You almost would not employ people, you would use contractors.

:14:21. > :14:28.Very difficult for businesses of below ten people to engage. 18

:14:29. > :14:33.months ago, we caught up with Colin, an ex`banker who now advises new

:14:34. > :14:39.firms. The big issue was access to finance. As I improved? Lott will

:14:40. > :14:44.not go to the banks. They will try to get it from friends, family and

:14:45. > :14:48.other people. They feel they will get rejected do things are not

:14:49. > :14:52.comfortable with doing. The last budget contained a number of

:14:53. > :14:56.measures aimed at small firms. There was a ?300 million investment scheme

:14:57. > :14:59.to boost lending small businesses. They were given ?2000 cut in

:15:00. > :15:07.employers national contributions, and by Kevin as, benefited from the

:15:08. > :15:11.cancellation of the fuel duty rise in 2013. Removing the so`called

:15:12. > :15:15.barriers to growth is exactly what our Bournemouth `based production

:15:16. > :15:22.company needs. The announcement are welcome. I don't think it goes far

:15:23. > :15:33.enough, it is on the periphery. Small companies like is really need

:15:34. > :15:35.funding and proper funding. They employ three, and plan to take on

:15:36. > :15:49.more staff if the climate continues to improve. The message still hasn't

:15:50. > :15:54.changed. Free up money. On to sport an hour. Transfer

:15:55. > :16:00.window, end of the week? Yes. I think we will have a lot of

:16:01. > :16:04.gossip. Primarily about Southampton. Keep an eye on Redding and

:16:05. > :16:07.Bournemouth as well. As it gets closer to the wire, it is more

:16:08. > :16:10.exciting. Mauricio Pochetinno says he's not

:16:11. > :16:13.expecting Luke Shaw to go anywhere in the final days of the transfer

:16:14. > :16:16.window Pochettino reiterated Saints desire to keep their star players at

:16:17. > :16:19.the club during today's press conference ahead of their Premier

:16:20. > :16:25.League clash against Arsenal tomorrow night. He also refused to

:16:26. > :16:28.be drawn on Dani Osvaldo's future with the striker currently suspended

:16:29. > :16:46.following a training ground fight last week. But has he had an offer

:16:47. > :16:50.for Shaw? I focus on the match. When it happens, if it happens, I will be

:16:51. > :16:54.informed. Meanwhile Saints beat Yeovil at St Mary's to book their

:16:55. > :16:57.place in round five of the FA Cup. A first half penalty was converted by

:16:58. > :17:04.Guly do Prado, his first goal for more than two years. Yeovil refused

:17:05. > :17:08.to lie down, and Saints had to wait until the 69th minute to seal

:17:09. > :17:10.victory thanks to a first senior goal from Sam Gallagher.

:17:11. > :17:13.Confirmation then Southampton will play at Sunderland` their third

:17:14. > :17:16.visit to the stadium of light this season on the weekend of the 15th

:17:17. > :17:20.and 16th February. They've already lost there in the league cup and

:17:21. > :17:24.drawn in the league. Brighton are at home to Hull. Brendan Rodgers paid

:17:25. > :17:27.tribute to Eddie Howe and his Bournemouth side after Liverpool's

:17:28. > :17:34.victory at Dean Court. A sell`out crowd saw the likes of Luis Suarez

:17:35. > :17:37.in action. There was a rare glimpse too of Cherries owner Max Demin the

:17:38. > :17:43.man whose investment has helped turn the club around. Liverpool scored a

:17:44. > :17:46.goal in each half, Victor Moses's effort which beating Lee Camp at the

:17:47. > :17:55.near post. Then Daniel Sturridge finishing well in the second half to

:17:56. > :18:04.end any hope of an upset. While are very good and I would give credit to

:18:05. > :18:14.them. It is not easy when you are a manager, sticking your head out, but

:18:15. > :18:17.he certainly does that. They were excellent. There was Football League

:18:18. > :18:20.action this weekend too, Kris Temple's round`up starts after this

:18:21. > :18:35.town crier at Portman Road has finished. This fan will have gone

:18:36. > :18:41.home happy. It took into the second half for Ipswich to go in front.

:18:42. > :18:52.Redding had penalty appeals on the day and saw efforts go high and

:18:53. > :18:58.wide. They are still sixth in the table. Swindon lead against

:18:59. > :19:12.Shrewsbury. The goal of the game came from the visitors. Two late

:19:13. > :19:24.goals gave Swindon all three points. Portsmouth were left to rue a

:19:25. > :19:33.goalkeeping clanger. The scores were level, but then a second was

:19:34. > :19:38.grabbed. Trevor Carson let this effort slip through his fingers.

:19:39. > :19:40.Basingstoke Bison are still in the race for ice hockey's Premier League

:19:41. > :19:44.title they beat Sheffield Steeldogs 6`5 on Saturday night. The Bison

:19:45. > :19:47.stormed into a four goal lead, Thomas Karpov and Ciaron Long among

:19:48. > :19:51.the goals. The visitors threatened a comeback and got to within one goal

:19:52. > :19:57.of the bison before, Joe Rand made it 6`3. A late fightback didn't

:19:58. > :20:00.prevent a Bison win, they're second in the table, Guildford lost to

:20:01. > :20:02.Telford and are third. Reading Rockets basketball team are

:20:03. > :20:06.celebrating after national success this weekend. The Rockets beat

:20:07. > :20:18.Newnham Neptunes by 93 points to 72 in Worcester yesterday.

:20:19. > :20:22.If you've travelled anywhere by bus, you've probably found yourself

:20:23. > :20:25.gazing blankly out of the window. As the landscape passes by, you might

:20:26. > :20:28.not concentrate on that changing view. Not so for an artist in

:20:29. > :20:31.Bournemouth, who's been commissioned to record her journeys with pencil

:20:32. > :20:34.drawings. But this is conceptual art, which not everyone may

:20:35. > :20:38.immediately warm to. James Ingham has been to meet the artist at work.

:20:39. > :20:43.Boarding a bus not for anywhere in particular, but simply to enjoy the

:20:44. > :20:47.journey. Denise Poote is recording her view of a dozen routes around

:20:48. > :20:58.Bournemouth in a rather unusual way. Armed with just a pencil and paper,

:20:59. > :21:03.she's turning the trip into art. I draw whatever catches my eye as I go

:21:04. > :21:07.past. Part of the trees become part of the buildings and vice versa. It

:21:08. > :21:12.is a physical response of my hand on the paper.

:21:13. > :21:15.For someone who gets travel sick, this seems an unusual choice of

:21:16. > :21:22.studio, but it's that unpleasant feeling that first inspired her. You

:21:23. > :21:27.are looking out of the window into the distance when I am a passenger

:21:28. > :21:31.made me observe things I thought I could begin to capture without

:21:32. > :21:35.looking at the paper. I will end up with a record of those things, and I

:21:36. > :21:38.wanted to do locally. Bournemouth's Yellow Buses

:21:39. > :21:47.commissioned this work ` so do their regular passengers like it? Very

:21:48. > :21:55.interesting. Yes. Does it make any sense to you? I am trying to figure

:21:56. > :22:00.it out. No, not really. Sorry. What do you like it? It draws attention.

:22:01. > :22:04.It makes you want to find out what it could be. At a different things

:22:05. > :22:08.to all sorts of people. That is the beauty of this. There are all sorts

:22:09. > :22:17.of different styles out there. So, just looking now, what you make of

:22:18. > :22:22.it? There is a bit of Christchurch Priory somewhere in there. There is

:22:23. > :22:26.no way you could have predicted how it would come out before. That is

:22:27. > :22:31.right. It belongs to the journey, really. I am just making marks of a

:22:32. > :22:35.particular set of circumstances. Love it or hate it, this is a view

:22:36. > :22:43.from a bus you've probably never seen before. Fascinating.

:22:44. > :22:46.More bad weather over the weekend, and on Saturday there were reports

:22:47. > :22:50.of a mini tornado over parts of Hampshire and West Sussex. Alexis

:22:51. > :22:54.will be here in a moment to give us her take on that. Roofs were ripped

:22:55. > :22:57.off garden sheds and trees felled across roads and train tracks.

:22:58. > :23:00.Although there were no reports of any serious injuries, some had a

:23:01. > :23:07.lucky escape, as Chris Robinson reports. Nestled in this tree is

:23:08. > :23:12.part of the roof of Christina's garden shed. On Saturday afternoon,

:23:13. > :23:19.she watched a strong winds ripped it apart. Homes were battered across

:23:20. > :23:28.part of the South. Her prize vintage car survived with barely a scratch

:23:29. > :23:34.on it. There is debris everywhere. Luckily, none of the horses were

:23:35. > :23:40.hurt. I am from Michu can. The midwest is quite tornado prone. I

:23:41. > :23:44.really do think this was a mini tornado. Nothing drastic like we get

:23:45. > :23:50.in the state. It looks quite familiar. This was the scene outside

:23:51. > :23:54.and over the leisure centre. A mother and her children had been

:23:55. > :23:59.sheltering under this tree when it came down on top of them. They

:24:00. > :24:05.escaped with just minor injuries. South West Trains reported some

:24:06. > :24:10.trains blocking part of a network. The driver was treated for shock

:24:11. > :24:15.when his car was trapped between branches. A massive branch was

:24:16. > :24:30.ripped off a tree here, crushing a roof. Chris Robinson.

:24:31. > :24:39.Was at a tornado? The Met Office cannot confirm because they do not

:24:40. > :24:46.have the evidence. They've is an organisation looking into it. They

:24:47. > :24:50.always send someone to have a look. A tornado gives a clearly defined

:24:51. > :24:56.damaged track. There was quite a track for that.

:24:57. > :24:59.You never know. Moody skies but a splash of colour

:25:00. > :25:02.in Mudeford in Dorset captured by Alan Smith. George Andrews took this

:25:03. > :25:05.photo of Portsmouth from East Wittering this morning. And Stephen

:25:06. > :25:12.Michelle captured a Great Egret which is in temporary residence at

:25:13. > :25:15.Blashford Lakes near Ringwood. We did see some sunshine today but

:25:16. > :25:22.tonight, the risk of further heavy rain. The Met Office have a yellow

:25:23. > :25:27.warning in place. This week, we are looking at blustery showers. It will

:25:28. > :25:33.turn slightly colder, and maybe introduce Frost and ice on untreated

:25:34. > :25:39.surfaces. Through tonight, we will see the rain showers, they will

:25:40. > :25:48.merge into longer spells of rain at times. Quite heavy in a few places.

:25:49. > :26:00.Perhaps some hair and thunder. Potentially, we could see up to an

:26:01. > :26:16.inch of rain. Lows tonight of four, five Celsius. Frost free and ice

:26:17. > :26:21.free, but the winds are blustery. Ltd brightness. If you catch

:26:22. > :26:28.sunshine, you will be very lucky. Temperatures up to around eight

:26:29. > :26:40.Celsius. Showers will continue tomorrow. They will not be as heavy.

:26:41. > :26:49.More unwelcome rain. Temperatures similar to tonight. It will be a wet

:26:50. > :27:04.start to the day we are looking at a slowly dying out scenario. There is

:27:05. > :27:11.the risk we could have some snow showers through Thursday. The Met

:27:12. > :27:14.Office do have a warning for rain for tonight and tomorrow.

:27:15. > :27:18.Thank you. That is it from us.
