:00:11. > :00:16.Good evening. Sewage that spilled onto properties near Henley during

:00:17. > :00:20.the flooding is still there, six weeks after it first appeared. It's

:00:21. > :00:23.been running through gardens and driveways in Mill End, near Henley

:00:24. > :00:26.after a pumping station flooded. Thames Water says it's fixed the

:00:27. > :00:39.pump, but with floodwaters still high the sewage isn't draining away.

:00:40. > :00:43.Charlotte Stacey reports. This water is basically a massive puddle full

:00:44. > :00:46.of sewage. I'm sure it does not take much to imagine the smell here. If

:00:47. > :00:49.The pumping station down there has failed, the electrics have been

:00:50. > :00:53.swamped with flood water and sewage is coming onto people's gardens and

:00:54. > :00:57.affecting people who live here. We have not been able to use the drive

:00:58. > :01:01.for six weeks. The smell outside and the fact that the manhole cover has

:01:02. > :01:06.been raised with the sewage is most unpleasant. The problems we have at

:01:07. > :01:11.the moment are minute compared to what is happening down the Thames at

:01:12. > :01:14.Wraysbury and Datchet. But we are annoyed with Thames Water because

:01:15. > :01:18.the pumping station is not clearing properly and we have sewage leaking

:01:19. > :01:27.out and we have to drive and alter it every day, which is pretty nasty.

:01:28. > :01:31.This cottage is next door to the pumping station and the cellar is

:01:32. > :01:35.full of raw sewage. It was into the house a few weeks ago but that has

:01:36. > :01:38.now started to drain away. Alex manages this property, which is in

:01:39. > :01:43.the process of being renovated. They have had to stop the work. Tell us

:01:44. > :01:56.about the problems. We accept the fact that water will come into the

:01:57. > :02:01.property, we are by the river. We have ground water coming in from the

:02:02. > :02:05.river. I do not accept the fact that we have sewage coming in for the

:02:06. > :02:09.second time in a year. I want Thames Water to get down here, look at the

:02:10. > :02:19.pumping station, look at why is water getting into their pumps. They

:02:20. > :02:22.need is the problem out. It is a simple solution, all any to do is

:02:23. > :02:25.invest properly and get the job done. Thames Water say the problem

:02:26. > :02:28.is fixed and the electrics are working again. The system is

:02:29. > :02:32.overwhelmed by the amount of flood water. For people living here, they

:02:33. > :02:35.just want a solution. Thames Water says it needs to prioritise

:02:36. > :02:37.customers who are most in need and will start assessing the situation

:02:38. > :02:40.when water levels subside. Meanwhile, in Oxford, some

:02:41. > :02:43.householders are still suffering from the effects of flooded sewers.

:02:44. > :02:47.Ann Watts has been unable to use her bathroom for almost two weeks. She's

:02:48. > :02:50.lived in the street since she was a child and claims back then, the

:02:51. > :02:54.waterways and sewers were better maintained. Now she says the problem

:02:55. > :02:58.is getting worse every year. We have never had to double sandbag before,

:02:59. > :03:05.and it is all the way round the house. We have had to buy

:03:06. > :03:13.dehumidifiers to keep the place dry inside. We have never had to do that

:03:14. > :03:17.before. So, things are changing. Today, MPs and local councillors met

:03:18. > :03:20.with Downing Street advisers to press for a permanent solution to

:03:21. > :03:23.the flooding problems in and around Oxford. MP Nicola Blackwood was

:03:24. > :03:31.among them ` and explained why they went. Clearly, for people living in

:03:32. > :03:34.Oxford and Abingdon, the flooding has become a really uncomfortable

:03:35. > :03:37.reality of the winter and even though we have had a good emergency

:03:38. > :03:41.response from the emergency services, the Environment Agency and

:03:42. > :03:44.councils, we need to recognise it is time for long`term solutions. The

:03:45. > :03:46.Environment Agency has come up with an impressive proposal, the Western

:03:47. > :03:57.Conveyance Channel, which will go around Oxford. It will take the

:03:58. > :04:02.water down to the south of Oxford. It'll cost about ?123 million. It

:04:03. > :04:05.will take about eight years to build. This is something we are

:04:06. > :04:09.seeking government support for but we also looking to local authorities

:04:10. > :04:13.and businesses. Today's meeting at number ten Downing St explained the

:04:14. > :04:16.challenges that we are facing in Oxford, not just in terms of the

:04:17. > :04:23.human cost but the economic cost. We have roads closed, we have had rail

:04:24. > :04:28.services down, this is not something that a 21st`century City can

:04:29. > :04:32.sustain. An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of a

:04:33. > :04:35.teenager who was stabbed to death in Oxford. Police were called to

:04:36. > :04:38.Fairacres Road last Thursday evening where they found 17`year`old Connor

:04:39. > :04:41.Tremble. He died in hospital at the weekend. A 20`year`old`man from

:04:42. > :04:43.Banbury has been remanded in custody accused of his

:04:44. > :04:47.Researchers in Oxford are trying new techniques to reduce the number of

:04:48. > :04:50.people needing knee replacement operations. Osteo`arthritis in the

:04:51. > :04:53.knee affects around six million people in the UK and the number's

:04:54. > :04:56.rising as we live longer. The team at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre

:04:57. > :05:02.is developing customised surgery which can be done at an early stage.

:05:03. > :05:08.Jessica Cooper reports. Doing her daily exercises after just having

:05:09. > :05:11.her knee replaced. For Sally, the operation was a last resort after

:05:12. > :05:21.struggling with osteoarthritis for 20 years. When you are going through

:05:22. > :05:24.the physio, you are going through the medications, you are hoping that

:05:25. > :05:27.you will find something that will assist you. But there comes a point

:05:28. > :05:32.where nothing helps and you either are told this is it, carry on, all

:05:33. > :05:37.you need a total knee replacement. There is nothing else they can

:05:38. > :05:40.offer. Now scientists in Oxford are trying to bridge the gap by offering

:05:41. > :05:47.tailored treatment to people with the condition at an earlier stage.

:05:48. > :05:50.One of the treatment is being trialled here is to cut into the

:05:51. > :05:53.shin, which realigns the leg and reduces the pressure on the knee,

:05:54. > :05:58.which makes it less painful for people with osteoarthritis. This

:05:59. > :06:01.image shows a knee with osteoarthritis and how the red

:06:02. > :06:11.pressure reduces after the shin surgery. We are really hoping to

:06:12. > :06:16.have really clear guides at the end of this three years. Where we can

:06:17. > :06:19.see who we should be applying these treatments to, which ones we should

:06:20. > :06:23.be applying for each person and particularly at what stage we should

:06:24. > :06:25.be applying them for each particular person. Sally's now looking forward

:06:26. > :06:29.to a pain`free life. She's donated her tissue and bone to the team in

:06:30. > :06:44.Oxford to help people affected by the disease in future. That's it

:06:45. > :06:52.from us for now. We're back in BBC Breakfast tomorrow morning. With the

:06:53. > :06:56.weather here's Alexis Green. We have rain tonight and strengthening

:06:57. > :07:00.southerly winds, becoming south`westerly tomorrow morning. We

:07:01. > :07:05.are expecting outbreaks of rain and very mild temperatures overnight,

:07:06. > :07:11.with low temperatures of eight Celsius. These showers will continue

:07:12. > :07:16.tomorrow morning first thing, before a band of rain rattles in from the

:07:17. > :07:23.south`west. Some strengthening winds, in particular, for the

:07:24. > :07:27.morning rush hour. In the afternoon, sunny spells and scattered, thundery

:07:28. > :07:31.showers, with some hailstones and high temperatures of themselves is.

:07:32. > :07:32.We're looking at a measure of sunny spells and scattered showers. Stay

:07:33. > :07:41.tuned, because Friday, a fine day. For the weekend,

:07:42. > :07:48.here is the BBC National weather. We have got rain and wind in the

:07:49. > :07:53.forecast, but the good news is that it is not severe. Over the next 24

:07:54. > :07:59.hours, some of us will get rain and the winds will be strengthening Not

:08:00. > :08:02.stormy at this stage. This is the satellite picture, you can see the

:08:03. > :08:04.low pressure in the North Atlantic shunting
