:00:00. > 3:59:59BBC News Channel. Now on BBC One, it's time for the news where you

:00:00. > :00:41.are. Good evening. People in Princes

:00:42. > :00:44.Risborough fear growing pressure to build more homes in the area could

:00:45. > :00:52.trigger the creation of a "garden city" on their doorstep. Wycombe

:00:53. > :00:56.District Council has been told it must allow for 7,000 more homes than

:00:57. > :01:00.originally expected in the next 15 years, in order to meet government

:01:01. > :01:03.targets. That takes the total requirement to 119,000 new homes by

:01:04. > :01:07.2030. With most of the district in the green belt ` or in an area of

:01:08. > :01:10.outstanding natural beauty ` land north`west of Princes Risborough

:01:11. > :01:13.looks likely to bear the brunt of any major development. Last night

:01:14. > :01:16.hundreds of people met to express their concerns. Honor Somerset

:01:17. > :01:19.reports. There was standing room only at the community centre. People

:01:20. > :01:22.were keen to quiz council planners about their proposals for the

:01:23. > :01:25.future. Around 8,000 people live there now. Last night there was

:01:26. > :01:28.widespread dismay at the prospect of thousands more new homes being built

:01:29. > :01:32.adjoining the town. I'm hoping that 2,500 isn't being quoted on this

:01:33. > :01:35.side of the election... But on the other side becomes much, much

:01:36. > :01:38.higher. We don't want to become a dumping ground for future

:01:39. > :01:41.development. It could make us a garden city. We could carry on

:01:42. > :01:44.growing forever to become one of the largest in the region. Most of

:01:45. > :01:48.Wycombe district is green belt, or an area of outstanding natural

:01:49. > :01:51.beauty. It can't be built on. This area north of the town is earmarked

:01:52. > :01:55.for the first batch of new homes. With a severe shortage of housing

:01:56. > :01:58.across the country, the council says development is inevitable. If we

:01:59. > :02:02.plan it we can get the right schools and surgeries. We'll get the quality

:02:03. > :02:05.housing. So when people are here in 2031, they'll look back and think

:02:06. > :02:09.this was a good thing. The planners say they have no intention of

:02:10. > :02:12.turning a market town into a city. The Swindon Town footballer Nile

:02:13. > :02:16.Ranger has told a jury that he is "not a rapist"` and that he was

:02:17. > :02:19.shocked to be arrested and charged by police. Ranger seen here in the

:02:20. > :02:23.middle, denied forcing himself on a young woman who he'd taken to a

:02:24. > :02:29.hotel while he was playing for Newcastle United. The case has been

:02:30. > :02:32.adjourned until Monday. An inquest jury has been hearing

:02:33. > :02:35.further details about the circumstances of a man's death while

:02:36. > :02:39.on remand in Woodhill Prison. Thirty year old Kevin Scarlet had a history

:02:40. > :02:43.of self`harm and complex mental health problems. `` 30`year`old.

:02:44. > :02:46.He'd been receiving closer supervision by prison staff, but was

:02:47. > :02:53.found hanging in his cell in May last year. The inquest is expected

:02:54. > :02:57.to conclude on Monday. A grieving widow says her husband

:02:58. > :03:00.suffered serious failings in care ` which she believes led to his death

:03:01. > :03:02.at Swindon's Great Western Hospital. Michael Edginton was originally

:03:03. > :03:05.admitted with appendicitis, but went on to develop a series of other

:03:06. > :03:08.serious conditions, while being discharged and re`admitted over

:03:09. > :03:12.several months. His wife says she and her family are owed an apology `

:03:13. > :03:19.and that the hospital must learn from what went wrong. Charlotte

:03:20. > :03:26.Stacey reports. Lynn Edginton lost her husband Michael in November last

:03:27. > :03:32.year. Already a sick man, he spent his last few months at the Great

:03:33. > :03:34.Western Hospital. She believes he suffered dehydration, malnutrition

:03:35. > :03:47.and at times neglect. She wants answers. Why did he land up with an

:03:48. > :03:53.amputated leg. His left leg was in plaster. It was broken. I want to

:03:54. > :03:57.understand how he got a broken leg. She says he want for periods without

:03:58. > :03:59.food and fluids. Some staff weren't aware he was blind. There were

:04:00. > :04:06.communication breakdowns between departments. The family say they

:04:07. > :04:10.were made to feel like a nuisance. We were told we were hindering them

:04:11. > :04:19.doing their job when we were really doing it for them. Michael was

:04:20. > :04:22.admitted in May last year. He was discharged in July but six days

:04:23. > :04:26.later he was re`admitted when an infection flared up again. In August

:04:27. > :04:29.he had part of his heel removed. In September, an x`ray showed his left

:04:30. > :04:35.leg was broken in two places. In October, his right leg was amputated

:04:36. > :04:41.below the knee. Michael died on the 13th of November last year. The

:04:42. > :04:44.hospital say the quality of care provided didn't meet the high

:04:45. > :04:52.standards they would noramlly expect. `` normally. They go on to

:04:53. > :04:55.say nursing and medical staff were in constant contact. They have

:04:56. > :04:58.apologised to Mrs Edginton for not keeping her fully informed and say

:04:59. > :05:09.they have arranged to meet her to discuss her husband's care.

:05:10. > :05:12.Meanwhile Chiltern Railways has signed a deal to acquire additional

:05:13. > :05:15.trains ` which will come into service in time for the opening of

:05:16. > :05:24.the new line between Oxford and London Marylebone next year.

:05:25. > :05:27.There'll be nine refurbished, two`carriage trains ` totalling

:05:28. > :05:30.1,100 seats ` which the company says will help cope with an anticipated

:05:31. > :05:32.growth in demand. They'll operate initially from the new Oxford

:05:33. > :05:36.Parkway station, before new services are introduced from the city centre.

:05:37. > :05:38.Oxford's version of the "Boris Bike" cycle hire scheme is to be

:05:39. > :05:41.re`launched, after its original operator went into liquidation last

:05:42. > :05:44.year. Introduced back in July, they were aimed at commuters using

:05:45. > :05:47.Thornhill Park and Ride, and travelling in and around Headington.

:05:48. > :05:50.A new operator will take over the initiative from April. The firm

:05:51. > :05:59.already successfully runs similar short`term cycle hire schemes.

:06:00. > :06:02.The Cotswold market town of Cirencester has hopped on the arts

:06:03. > :06:10.trail bandwagon with a hare`brained idea. 35 giant fibre`glass hares

:06:11. > :06:13.like this one will be appearing around the town ` decorated by

:06:14. > :06:16.artists and sponsored by local businesses, to create a colourful

:06:17. > :06:29.arts trail, and raise money for the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust.

:06:30. > :06:37.We've chosen hares... We found the first Roman hare mosaic here. Ever

:06:38. > :06:43.since Roman times hares have been part of history. Newsnight is just

:06:44. > :06:47.starting over on BBC Two. Newsnight's in Kiev over on two as

:06:48. > :06:51.Russian troops spread into Ukraine. That's it from us for now. We'll

:06:52. > :06:54.leave you with the weekend weather ` starting with the regional forecast

:06:55. > :07:09.with Alexis. Have a good weekend. Goodnight.

:07:10. > :07:29.Temperatures down to minus one. It could even get to minus two. A

:07:30. > :07:34.chilly start. Highs reaching five to seven. Sunday will start dry.

:07:35. > :07:40.weekend summary for London. Now time for the National forecast.

:07:41. > :07:48.Good evening, if you are a meteorologist, tomorrow is the first

:07:49. > :07:52.day of spring. But mother nature has little regard for such labels. That

:07:53. > :07:57.is one explanation for why spring starts with a touch of frost and

:07:58. > :08:03.fog. Sunny spells on Saturday before outbreaks of rain from the West on

:08:04. > :08:07.Sunday. Already a lot of cloud out West but before that, we have to get

:08:08. > :08:09.rid of this cloud across the East which is
