:00:11. > :00:13.Good evening. The Swindon Town footballer Nile Ranger has been

:00:14. > :00:17.cleared of rape. The striker had told the jury at Newcastle Crown

:00:18. > :00:21.Court that he was "not a rapist and he was shocked to be charged by

:00:22. > :00:24.police and tonight that jurx found him not guilty. Our reporter Adrian

:00:25. > :00:30.Pitches is in Newcastle for us tonight.

:00:31. > :00:34.The allegation against Nile Ranger was made in January last ye`r. He'd

:00:35. > :00:38.spent the night with a woman aged 23 at a hotel in Jesmond in Newcastle.

:00:39. > :00:41.After the event, two days after the event, she made a complaint to

:00:42. > :00:45.police and said that the sex they'd had had been non`consensual and she

:00:46. > :00:49.had no recollection of it. She had woken up in bed with Nile R`nger the

:00:50. > :00:53.following morning and claimdd she was so drunk she wouldn't h`ve been

:00:54. > :00:56.able to give consent. During the course of the trial, it was revealed

:00:57. > :00:59.that they had exchanged text messages more than 1,000 tiles over

:01:00. > :01:04.a five`day period concerning this particular allegation. And the

:01:05. > :01:07.defence made play of the fact that these texts were friendly,

:01:08. > :01:12.flirtatious and, indeed, thdy seem to show some form of relationship

:01:13. > :01:14.forming. However the woman denied that she wanted a physical

:01:15. > :01:20.relationship with Ranger, and she was shocked by what happened. Ranger

:01:21. > :01:25.also had mobile phones, the evidence for which was taken by police. On

:01:26. > :01:29.one of them, he'd actually taken a picture of the bed in which the sex

:01:30. > :01:32.act had taken place, a picttre he hastily deleted when he was

:01:33. > :01:35.arrested. His own barrister admitted that did not actually portr`y the

:01:36. > :01:39.actions of a gentleman. It was, if you like, a trophy photo. R`ngers

:01:40. > :01:43.suffered as a result of these charges being brought. A move to

:01:44. > :01:48.Hull City fell through and he moved eventually from Newcastle United to

:01:49. > :01:51.League One Swindon Town. After the verdict was announced by thd jury

:01:52. > :02:03.after just an hour's deliberation, Rangers said, "Thank God."

:02:39. > :02:44.Two weeks later, they found her body in a grave here at Great Western

:02:45. > :02:48.Cemetery in Didcot. But questions are now being asked about the police

:02:49. > :02:52.themselves. Did they follow procedure as they should have?

:02:53. > :02:54.During the investigation, they referred themselves to the police

:05:13. > :05:16.I'm staying in hospital for a month. I was burning myself with chgarettes

:05:17. > :05:22.and cutting myself with razors. I was in a complete state. I was
