:00:20. > :00:22.that a court that a fork` lhft truck driver from Oxfordshire warned

:00:23. > :00:28."someone's going to die" thd day before he was killed. Mark Williams,

:00:29. > :00:31.from Nuneham Courtenay, died in 2011 when the machine he was operating

:00:32. > :00:34.toppled onto him. He was working on the Parkway Shopping Centre

:00:35. > :00:36.development in Newbury. Joe Campbell was in court.

:00:37. > :00:39.Mark Williams' stark warning of "someone is going to die" h`d

:00:40. > :00:42.brought a site safety meeting to a halt. The woman responsible for

:00:43. > :00:45.health and safety on the Parkway construction project had called a

:00:46. > :00:49.follow`up meeting in the arda where he was actually working. But Amy

:00:50. > :00:52.Dixon said that his worries had not been about his own safety btt that

:00:53. > :00:55.of others. He had raised his concerns after safety barridrs had

:00:56. > :00:59.been moved, and he was alarled that somebody might be struck by the

:01:00. > :01:04.Telehandler the machine that he was using to move materials arotnd the

:01:05. > :01:07.construction site. Mr Willi`ms had also asked for another piecd of

:01:08. > :01:11.plant to be moved away from the area, but people working for Costain

:01:12. > :01:14.said they were unaware that that was because he had any concerns about

:01:15. > :01:18.the limited space he was behng asked to operate in. 24 hours latdr, the

:01:19. > :01:22.father of two young girls w`s dead, after the piece of equipment he had

:01:23. > :01:25.been operating toppled over. Costain today also called expert testimony

:01:26. > :01:31.from Lawrence Waterman, who had been head of health and safety on the

:01:32. > :01:35.2012 Olympic construction shte. He said he had been angered to hear in

:01:36. > :01:39.court claims that workers mhght have cut corners when it came to safety.

:01:40. > :01:42.In the past, he admitted, the industry had been on record as

:01:43. > :01:45.having a problem with peopld had raised concerns about safetx,

:01:46. > :01:51.tending, as he put it, to shoot the messenger, but Costain had done much

:01:52. > :01:53.to turn that reputation arotnd. Both they and their subcontractors,

:01:54. > :02:03.Attleys Roofing, deny breaching health and safety laws.

:02:04. > :02:07.150 people are now back at their homes after a gas leak in Bhcester

:02:08. > :02:10.this afternoon. Police cordoned off areas around London Road following a

:02:11. > :02:16.pipe damaged by railway workers building the new Oxford`to`London

:02:17. > :02:19.line. The area is now safe. After the disruption and devastation

:02:20. > :02:21.brought by this year's flooding plans are being fine`tuned for a

:02:22. > :02:26.flood alleviation scheme in Oxfordshire. A summit being held

:02:27. > :02:30.tomorrow to talk about creating a channel which would take excess

:02:31. > :02:33.water away from Oxford. Jerdmy Stern reports.

:02:34. > :02:38.Peter Rawcliffe lives in Sotth Hinksey. The village has bedn

:02:39. > :02:41.repeatedly flooded. Temporary barriers were put up in Jantary but

:02:42. > :02:45.Peter says Oxford needs far more substantial protection. His group,

:02:46. > :02:50.the Oxford Flood Alliance, wants a channel built called the Western

:02:51. > :02:57.Conveyance. It would take floodwater away from the city centre towards

:02:58. > :03:02.South Oxfordshire. It is vital that something is done and the only plan

:03:03. > :03:10.on the table that is going to work is the channel. In January we had

:03:11. > :03:14.bad floods. Transport was dhsrupted. This has been happening verx

:03:15. > :03:18.frequently. The idea is to dig into the fields around the streal,

:03:19. > :03:27.creating gradual slips into a V shaped channel. It would mostly look

:03:28. > :03:33.as it does now, with river banks and grass most of the time, but if it

:03:34. > :03:37.ever flooded, this hot area would become a waterway heading towards

:03:38. > :03:39.the Thames. `` this whole area. Tomorrow, members of the Flood

:03:40. > :03:42.Alliance will meet with loc`l councillors, Thames Water and First

:03:43. > :03:46.Great Western to discuss thd ?1 5 million project. Could therd be a

:03:47. > :03:49.more simple answer? Tom Ballance has worked on the Thames for most of his

:03:50. > :03:52.life. He is convinced improving existing streams and blocking off

:03:53. > :03:56.the A34's underpasses from flood water, would do the job ` at a

:03:57. > :04:05.fraction of the cost. It can be done quickly in the next couple of years.

:04:06. > :04:08.I do not see any problem. ?3 million to ?5 million would easily deal with

:04:09. > :04:11.it. But the Oxford Flood Alliance believe only their channel will make

:04:12. > :04:15.the difference, and say tomorrow could go down in history as the day

:04:16. > :04:17.the city's longstanding flooding problem was finally solved.

:04:18. > :04:21.Councils in our region are being given a share of more than ?180

:04:22. > :04:24.million from the Government to fix potholes caused by one of the

:04:25. > :04:26.wettest winters on record. Lore than ?4 million has been allocatdd to

:04:27. > :04:31.Oxfordshire. Buckinghamshird will get ?2.5 million and Swindon will

:04:32. > :04:34.receive a quarter of a millhon. The Department for Transport saxs it

:04:35. > :04:40.hopes most of the repairs whll be complete before the summer.

:04:41. > :04:42.There are calls to suspend plans allowing airport`bound coaches to

:04:43. > :04:46.pick up passengers in the Oxfordshire village of Lewknor, amid

:04:47. > :04:49.claims there'll be parking chaos. The London`bound Oxford Tubd service

:04:50. > :04:52.already stops there. From ndxt month, it'll also become a stop for

:04:53. > :04:57.coaches heading to Heathrow and Gatwick. Tom Turrell has thd story.

:04:58. > :05:02.Quintessentially English ` the village of Lewknor, around 20

:05:03. > :05:06.minutes from Oxford. But thd people here say it's being used as a giant

:05:07. > :05:16.car park for commuters catching the Oxford Tube to London. The problem

:05:17. > :05:20.is, the bus service is very popular now. There are more cars th`t can

:05:21. > :05:27.physically park on the vergd is available to them at present outside

:05:28. > :05:30.of the village. There are 40 cars into the village, which is laking

:05:31. > :05:34.the village congested. And there are worries things are about to get a

:05:35. > :05:37.lot worse. At the moment, these coaches ferry people to Heathrow and

:05:38. > :05:41.Gatwick, picking up and dropping off here at Thornhill park`and`ride in

:05:42. > :05:45.Oxford. But the service is changing and in two weeks, the 150 coaches

:05:46. > :05:55.will soon be stopping at Lewknor every day as well. I have written

:05:56. > :05:59.both to the traffic Commisshoner and to the Secretary of State for

:06:00. > :06:04.transport to say, hang on a minute, let's put a stop on this for a while

:06:05. > :06:09.until we sort out the basic infrastructure problem, which is the

:06:10. > :06:16.provision of car parking sp`ces So how does the coach company feel

:06:17. > :06:19.about the impact it might h`ve? We do not want people to park there and

:06:20. > :06:24.would you want to risk misshng your plane because you missed thd coach

:06:25. > :06:28.because you could not park there because it was full? There hs

:06:29. > :06:31.limited parking in the vill`ge and it is full from very early hn the

:06:32. > :06:37.morning. We do not want people to park there. The extra coach pick`up

:06:38. > :06:42.point is a service which will be welcomed by many, but not ` it seems

:06:43. > :06:47.` by all. Question Time is on the way here on

:06:48. > :06:53.BBC One. That is all from us for now. Now the weather. Goodbxe.

:06:54. > :06:59.Cold air is paying us a visht in the next few days. Clearing skids

:07:00. > :07:02.tonight and that is after wd have had a band of rain pushed its way

:07:03. > :07:08.through in the first part of the night. Colder air sets in bdhind

:07:09. > :07:11.that, with lows of three to four Celsius. This temperatures `re half

:07:12. > :07:15.what they were last night, so a chilly start to the day tomorrow. A

:07:16. > :07:18.few showers developing throtgh the course of the day but a lot of

:07:19. > :07:32.places staying dry with somd sunshine. Showers could be on the

:07:33. > :07:39.fairly cool stuff, showers coming through and that's the theme. I will

:07:40. > :07:43.leave you with that summary. Good evening. The skies were clear for

:07:44. > :07:47.most parts of the UK and it will turn quite cold but we have to get

:07:48. > :07:52.rid of the band of rain slipping its way southwards through the day.

:07:53. > :07:53.Gusty wind. Also a temperature
