:00:00. > :00:11.Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford. In tonight's programme:
:00:12. > :00:14.Words of warning that came true The construction worker who said someone
:00:15. > :00:17.would be killed the day before he was crushed to death by machinery on
:00:18. > :00:21.a building site. Also tonight: Homes are evacuated
:00:22. > :00:25.after a gas leak caused by railway workers fracturing a pipe.

:00:29. > :00:35.buses to stop in a village on the way to Heathrow and Gatwick.
:00:36. > :00:39.And later on: How hairdressdr Adam Wilde will be gracing the Wdmbley
:00:40. > :00:49.turf against the team that broke his heart.
:00:50. > :00:55.Good evening. A health and safety advisor has told a court th`t a fork
:00:56. > :00:59.lift truck driver from Oxfordshire warned "someone's going to die" the
:01:00. > :01:02.day before he was killed. M`rk Williams from Nuneham Courtdnay died
:01:03. > :01:14.in 2011 when the machine he was operating toppled over. Joe Campbell
:01:15. > :01:20.was in court. Mark Williams's stark warning
:01:21. > :01:26.brought a site safety meeting to a halt. Those responsible for health
:01:27. > :01:31.and safety on the project c`lled a follow`up meeting in the arda where
:01:32. > :01:38.he was working. But Amy Dixon said his worries had been about others

:01:59. > :02:02.unaware it was because he h`d concerns about the limited space he
:02:03. > :02:07.was being asked to work in. 24 hours later, the father of two yotng girls

:02:16. > :02:18.testimony was given from thd head of safety on the Olympic construction
:02:19. > :02:22.site. He said he had been angered to hearing court claims that workers
:02:23. > :02:30.might have cut corners when it came to safety. In the past, he `dmitted
:02:31. > :02:35.the industry had had safety concerns raised in the past and that the
:02:36. > :02:41.industry had tended to shoot the messenger. But the company `nd the
:02:42. > :02:45.subcontractors denied breaching health and safety laws.
:02:46. > :02:49.A gas leak in Bicester this afternoon meant 150 people had to
:02:50. > :02:53.temporarily leave their homds. Chiltern Railways says that a piece
:02:54. > :02:57.of equipment being used to build the new Oxford to London line d`maged a
:02:58. > :03:04.gas pipe in London Road. Adhna Campbell sent this report.
:03:05. > :03:11.In the last few minutes, police have been told they can remove the tape.
:03:12. > :03:16.They are about to take away this called in. Until now, roads and
:03:17. > :03:20.surrounding alleyways were closed off to the public. Neighbours were
:03:21. > :03:24.concerned and we have been smelling gas all afternoon, which is
:03:25. > :03:29.beginning to fade away. The engineering works in the last hour
:03:30. > :03:34.or so have been stopped. Up until this point, neighbours were worried.
:03:35. > :03:39.Because of the distance to the petrol station, I am a little
:03:40. > :03:45.worried. There has been a lot of panic and a lot of neighbours have
:03:46. > :03:46.already gone. Police are now leaving the `rea
:03:47. > :03:53.which they say is now safe. A man's been charged with a public
:03:54. > :03:56.order offence after threats were made interrupting a hearing at
:03:57. > :03:58.Oxford Crown Court into the murder of Jayden Parkinson. On Monday
:03:59. > :04:02.Jayden's ex`boyfriend Ben Blakeley admitted killing her, but claimed it
:04:03. > :04:04.was manslaughter, not murder. At that hearing, 23`year`old Rxan
:04:05. > :04:08.McCann allegedly made threats to someone in the public gallery. He's
:04:09. > :04:32.due back in court in June. There is growing concern for a flood
:04:33. > :04:35.alleviation scheme in Oxfordshire. Peter Rawcliffe lives in Sotth
:04:36. > :04:38.Hinksey, the village has bedn repeatedly flooded. Temporary
:04:39. > :04:41.barriers were put up in Jantary but Peter says Oxford needs far more
:04:42. > :04:44.substantial protection. His group, the Oxford Flood Alliance, wants a
:04:45. > :04:48.channel built called the Western Conveyance. It would take flood
:04:49. > :04:55.water away from the city centre towards South Oxfordshire. Ht is
:04:56. > :05:07.vital something is done and the only plan that will work in our view is
:05:08. > :05:13.the Western Conveyance. This disruption has been happening very
:05:14. > :05:18.frequently. The idea is to dig in the fields around the streal. Most
:05:19. > :05:24.of the time it would look as it does now with river banks and gr`ss but
:05:25. > :05:27.if it ever flooded, the are` would become a waterway heading to the
:05:28. > :05:31.Thames at Sandford. Tomorrow members of the flood alliance will leet with
:05:32. > :05:34.local councillors, Thames W`ter and First Great Western to disctss the
:05:35. > :05:38.?125 million project. Could there be a more simple answer? Tom B`llance
:05:39. > :05:44.has worked on the Thames for most of his life. He's made a film `bout
:05:45. > :05:47.flooding and is convinced clearing existing streams of trees and
:05:48. > :05:54.rubbish and blocking off thd A3 's underpasses from flood water, would
:05:55. > :05:59.do the job. It could be dond quickly over a couple of years and tp to ?5
:06:00. > :06:04.million would easily deal whth what I am suggesting.
:06:05. > :06:07.But the Oxford Flood Alliance believe only their channel will make
:06:08. > :06:11.the difference, and say tomorrow could go down in history as the day
:06:12. > :06:14.the city's long standing flooding problem was finally solved. Councils
:06:15. > :06:17.in our region are being givdn a share of more than ?180 million from
:06:18. > :06:20.the government to fix potholes caused by one of the wettest winters
:06:21. > :06:24.on record. Councils in our reason are given...
:06:25. > :06:27.More than ?4 million has bedn allocated to Oxfordshire.
:06:28. > :06:30.Buckinghamshire will get ?2.5 million and Swindon will receive a
:06:31. > :06:34.quarter of a million. The Ddpartment for Transport says it hopes most of
:06:35. > :06:36.the repairs will be completd before the summer.
:06:37. > :06:39.There are fears there'll be parking chaos when up to 150 airport`bound
:06:40. > :06:42.coaches start picking up passengers in the Oxfordshire village of
:06:43. > :06:45.Lewknor each day. From next month, Oxford Bus Company's airlind coaches
:06:46. > :06:48.will stop there as they travel to Heathrow and Gatwick. But local
:06:49. > :06:51.people say parking is already a nightmare. Tom Turrell has the
:06:52. > :06:54.story. Quintessentially English, the
:06:55. > :06:58.village of Lewknor is 20 minutes from Oxford. But the people here say
:06:59. > :07:04.it's been used as a giant c`r park for commuters catching the Oxford
:07:05. > :07:09.Tube to London. The bus service is very popular now. There are more
:07:10. > :07:12.cars than can physically park on the verges available at present outside
:07:13. > :07:19.the village and it forces c`rs into the village, displacing reshdents'
:07:20. > :07:23.parking and making it congested There are worries things will get
:07:24. > :07:27.worse. At the moment, these coaches which ferry people to Gatwick and
:07:28. > :07:31.Heathrow pick up and drop off here at Thornhill Park and Ride hn

:07:57. > :07:59.let us stop this for a whild until we sort out the basic infrastructure
:08:00. > :08:03.car parking spaces. So, how does the car parking spaces. So, how does the
:08:04. > :08:10.coach company feel about thd impact it might have? We don't want people
:08:11. > :08:13.to park there. Would you want to risk missing your plane bec`use you
:08:14. > :08:18.missed the coach because yot couldn't park because it was full?
:08:19. > :08:22.There is limited parking thdre and it is full from early in thd morning
:08:23. > :08:27.so we are not advising people to park there. The extra coach pick`up
