:00:00. > :00:00.is getting under way over on BBC Two in a moment with analysis of that

:00:00. > :00:09.debate between Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage.

:00:10. > :00:16.Good evening. Around 150 schools in our region have been affectdd by

:00:17. > :00:18.today's teachers strike. Thd action's part of a long`running

:00:19. > :00:25.dispute about pay, pensions and workload. Hundreds of teachdrs have

:00:26. > :00:32.taken part in a march and r`lly in Oxford. The strike was calldd by the

:00:33. > :00:36.National Union of Teachers. A defiant march to the centre of

:00:37. > :00:40.Oxford. Teachers and supporters hoped to send a clear message to

:00:41. > :00:45.Education Secretary Michael Gove. One Buckinghamshire teacher taking

:00:46. > :00:50.part told me he was quitting the profession. The workload was simply

:00:51. > :00:54.too much. Teaching is no longer the journey of discovery that it should

:00:55. > :00:58.be. It is now just a pressure cooker for pupils and teachers alike.

:00:59. > :01:04.That's not the environment H want my children to grow into. Nearly 1 0

:01:05. > :01:11.schools have been closed or partially shut by the action in

:01:12. > :01:15.Oxfordshire alone. A large `nd loud turnout here, but in a statdment

:01:16. > :01:20.today, the Department for Education told us it is disappointed `t the

:01:21. > :01:23.action to strike saying it damages the chances of children's

:01:24. > :01:29.education, and damages the reputation of the profession. What

:01:30. > :01:34.we want is a compromise. We want government to sit down and talk with

:01:35. > :01:38.us properly, and that is not what they are doing. There have been

:01:39. > :01:43.weekly talks, but Michael Gove has not attended any of them. Wd want a

:01:44. > :01:47.proper dialogue to resolve this issue. The feeling on the streets

:01:48. > :01:51.has been mixed. Closed schools have caused disruption for parents. I

:01:52. > :01:55.don't think it is fair that they chose parents when they want to take

:01:56. > :01:59.them out of school for a dax, but then it's OK when they want to go on

:02:00. > :02:03.strike. They caused so much inconvenience, child care is

:02:04. > :02:06.expensive as it is. Teachers here in this they will continue thehr fight.

:02:07. > :02:14.They say it will be for a bdtter future in education.

:02:15. > :02:18.Crossrail is to be extended to renting. It will mean hundrdds of

:02:19. > :02:25.extra rush`hour seats. A formal announcement is expected tolorrow.

:02:26. > :02:32.The new rating station and the depot nearby were designed with Crossrail

:02:33. > :02:36.in mind. The decision to terminate services further east at Mahdenhead

:02:37. > :02:40.was taken years ago to reduce costs. Now, the entire route is behng

:02:41. > :02:44.electrified anyway, so the lain financial obstacle has been removed.

:02:45. > :02:50.I understand that a decision will be announced tomorrow morning. For

:02:51. > :02:55.Reading it will mean two tr`ins an hour into the heart of London, using

:02:56. > :03:00.a new tunnel to the city. Twyford will also get direct servicds. With

:03:01. > :03:05.nine carriages each, they whll add thousands of extra seats a day.

:03:06. > :03:08.There would still be to First Great Western local trains and hotr.

:03:09. > :03:14.Together, a transformation of services. But, Crossrail will take

:03:15. > :03:19.50 minute to reach London, compared with 25 minutes on these new

:03:20. > :03:27.high`speed trains. And, there are concerns about comfort levels. For

:03:28. > :03:31.example, no toilets, no catdring, but for most passengers, thd

:03:32. > :03:40.benefits of this decision are considerable. For the railw`y, the

:03:41. > :03:43.costs are marginal. Redundancy letters have been

:03:44. > :03:46.received at the homes of hundreds of Honda workers based in Swindon.

:03:47. > :03:50.It was announced yesterday that 500 jobs are to go at the plant. Honda

:03:51. > :03:59.blames continuing poor sales in Europe for its decision.

:04:00. > :04:02.One of the last of the Bletchley Park code breakers has died. Jerry

:04:03. > :04:05.Roberts was 93. The work of the codebreakers, who interceptdd Nazi

:04:06. > :04:08.messages, is said to have shortened the Second World War by at least two

:04:09. > :04:11.years. Managers of a bar in Oxford say

:04:12. > :04:13.crime, including theft, has dropped there since they started kedping

:04:14. > :04:17.identity records of its customers. An electric scanner at Thirst Bar

:04:18. > :04:20.checks if ID cards are legitimate. It also can stop underage drinkers

:04:21. > :04:23.getting in. Privacy campaigners say nightclubs shouldn't have the right

:04:24. > :04:31.to retain information about guests, but police disagree.

:04:32. > :04:35.The information taken is wh`t they show to a member of door st`ff

:04:36. > :04:39.anyway. There is nothing th`t isn't in the public domain alreadx there

:04:40. > :04:43.could be found on the Internet. The people that may be concerned about

:04:44. > :04:47.having their details taken lay not be the people that the management

:04:48. > :04:49.here want on the premises in the first place.

:04:50. > :04:52.There are claims students who want to work in motorsport are ddciding

:04:53. > :04:55.not to study in Oxford becatse of changes to visa rules. To rdmain in

:04:56. > :04:58.the country after they gradtate students from outside the ET the

:04:59. > :05:01.need to be sponsored by a btsiness. The government says it's to limit

:05:02. > :05:04.immigration and stop bogus applications. Peter Cooke rdports.

:05:05. > :05:07.Like hundreds of others, Gabriel Elias was attracted to the Thames

:05:08. > :05:12.Valley because of its rich motorsport heritage. But thd Oxford

:05:13. > :05:20.Brookes student will have to return to America unless he can find an

:05:21. > :05:26.employer willing to sponsor him I work it to benefit the motorsport

:05:27. > :05:30.engineering. Obviously we are here to benefit the universities as

:05:31. > :05:33.well, so we have a specific purpose coming here. Since 2012, anx non`EU

:05:34. > :05:38.graduate who wants to stay has to find a job which pays a minhmum of

:05:39. > :05:49.?20,000. Even then, businesses must fund the visa of that emploxee. The

:05:50. > :05:54.way the rules are set out, the Visa is constructed in such a wax that it

:05:55. > :05:58.should potentially allow us to stay, but we are finding that bushnesses

:05:59. > :06:03.are being put off from hiring us based on the fact that they do need

:06:04. > :06:08.to apply for those visas. It is easier to hire someone from the UK.

:06:09. > :06:14.The government says it annotnced the changes as part of its efforts to

:06:15. > :06:17.tackle migration and bogus applications but many peopld say it

:06:18. > :06:20.is deterring genuine and talented students. Our region, known as

:06:21. > :06:25.Motorsport Valley, boasts sdven F1 teams. There are more than 3,00

:06:26. > :06:27.companies associated with the sport, employing some 40,000 peopld,

:06:28. > :06:29.including 80% of the world's high`performance engineers. The

:06:30. > :06:32.industry produces an estimated turnover of ?6 billion. But, with

:06:33. > :06:34.their finishing line in sight, some of these students face misshng out

:06:35. > :06:49.on joining that illustrious group. Alexis will have news of wh`t the

:06:50. > :06:53.weather has in store. That's in just a moment. That's it from us. Good

:06:54. > :06:57.night. Good evening. Rain or showers during

:06:58. > :07:02.the course of the night, and the risk of ice on untreated surfaces.

:07:03. > :07:07.The showers will continue through the night. Mist and fog may develop

:07:08. > :07:15.and there will be patchy frost first thing tomorrow morning. Temperatures

:07:16. > :07:20.tomorrow will reach 910 Celsius during the afternoon. We will see

:07:21. > :07:24.some sunshine, but also one or two showers, which could be heavy with

:07:25. > :07:28.hail or thunder at times. A brisk easterly wind will take the edge off

:07:29. > :07:32.temptress. Into the weekend, temperatures are on the up. Above

:07:33. > :07:36.the seasonal average. blowing. On the outlook, it is

:07:37. > :07:42.warming up towards the weekend. Here's Nick Miller with more.

:07:43. > :07:47.Some of the many faces of spring weather showed themselves today Sun

:07:48. > :07:53.in Scotland, snow in the showers that moved in across England. Hail

:07:54. > :07:56.as well. Adrian took this picture from Essex and the chilly feel stays

:07:57. > :08:01.with us for the rest of the week along with further showers. If you

:08:02. > :08:05.don't like this, wait for this! Temperatures heading up at the

:08:06. > :08:09.weekend. To achieve that, we need to change the weather pattern which is

:08:10. > :08:13.tailored towards a cold wind coming in from the North Sea and low

:08:14. > :08:18.pressure giving us showers. Cold enough for the rest of the night for

:08:19. > :08:20.the showers to fall as snow on the Pennines and even to relatively low

:08:21. > :08:21.levels, there could
