:02:27. > :02:30.Here in Oxford the shops ard busy, house prices are up. You max think
:02:31. > :02:33.these are signs of an econoly on the cusp of a boom. This new report by
:02:34. > :02:37.the Oxford Civic Society saxs there are huge problems in Oxfordshire.
:02:38. > :02:42.Peter Thompson is from the society. What are these huge problems? Number
:02:43. > :02:46.one is housing. There aren't enough houses for the jobs that exhst.
:02:47. > :02:49.There are many more jobs behng created and the number of houses is
:02:50. > :02:58.going to have to increase enormously. What do you think should
:02:59. > :03:00.be done about it? There has to be joined up thinking across the
:03:01. > :03:03.district councils that are responsible for planning, the County
:03:04. > :03:06.Council that is responsible for transportation and the businesses,
:03:07. > :03:09.the universities. I know thd society has put a lot of work into this

:04:04. > :04:06.plans to spend ?38 billion to tackle problems on the busiest parts of the

:04:16. > :04:18.Oxford gets a bit of benefit today with talk of Oxford to Milton Keynes
:04:19. > :04:25.and some rail investment works works. Still the problem for Oxford
:04:26. > :04:28.is that ?15 billion is going on the HS2 line from London to Birlingham,
:04:29. > :04:31.which will just whizz past Oxford, right through Buckinghamshire and

:05:01. > :05:03.town centre have taken a set back today. The town council wanted to
:05:04. > :05:06.spend ?4.5 million converting the Guildhall into a cinema, cafe and
:05:07. > :05:09.conference centre, but their bid for the money has been rejected. As Tom
:05:10. > :05:12.Turrell reports. It is market day in Abingdon, and
:05:13. > :05:17.that means shoppers from thd area head to the town centre, re`dy to
:05:18. > :05:21.spend their hard earned cash. But many here feel more needs to be done
:05:22. > :05:25.to pull in the punters. The town council believes the answer could
:05:26. > :05:34.lie right here in the centuries old Guildhall. They want to spend around
:05:35. > :05:38.?4.5 million doing it up. The building dates back to the 0400s.
:05:39. > :05:41.The idea is to bring it into the 21st century. Turning rooms like

:05:48. > :05:51.council has just been told hts bid for almost ?2 million of lottery
:05:52. > :05:57.funding has been rejected. So, how do local people feel? We do need a
:05:58. > :06:06.cinema and I think Abingdon is always the poor parenting f`mily. It
:06:07. > :06:11.is what it is, a little town. Never be more than that? Not unless they
:06:12. > :06:16.knock the centre down and start again. Apparently it is by no means
:06:17. > :06:19.the end of the line for the project, as the council say they will
:06:20. > :06:22.continue, but with a scaled`down version. We want to have a place
:06:23. > :06:26.where people can come and mdet and socialise casually. That'll be a bit
:06:27. > :06:30.more restrictive. We will still have it but not quite as large as we
:06:31. > :06:34.want. We have had to cut our cloth in that way. So, there is hope yet
:06:35. > :06:43.for Abingdon's new Guildhall, but it seems when and exactly what form it
:06:44. > :06:47.will take are yet to be confirmed. That's it from us for now. For
