:00:00. > :00:00.thundery showers developing. As we move towards the weekend, the winds

:00:00. > :00:20.will become more of a feature. Heavy showers, but at the same time, there

:00:21. > :00:24.will also be sunny spells. this is a serious

:00:25. > :00:30.Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford. In tonight's programme:

:00:31. > :00:33.Police appeal to muslim womdn to stop their sons, brothers and

:00:34. > :00:37.boyfriends going to Syria to fight ` counterterrorism police takd their

:00:38. > :00:41.campaign to Banbury. Also tonight: The Prime Minhster and

:00:42. > :00:47.potholes ` David Cameron dons a hard hat and promises more money to

:00:48. > :00:50.repair damaged roads. What's in your takeaway? Lalb kebabs

:00:51. > :00:54.are found to contain other leat in an investigation by Trading

:00:55. > :00:57.Standards. And later on: How a transatlantic

:00:58. > :01:10.rower was reunited with the boat he thought he'd lost.

:01:11. > :01:15.Good evening. Counterterrorhsm police have been in Banbury as part

:01:16. > :01:19.of their campaign to stop British Muslims going to Syria to fhght

:01:20. > :01:22.Police say they're increasingly concerned about the number of young

:01:23. > :01:25.men heading there to join the conflict. Last month, a man from

:01:26. > :01:29.Oxford was arrested by police on suspicion of terror offences linked

:01:30. > :01:33.to Syria. Victoria Cook has this report.

:01:34. > :01:38.More than 400 British Muslils are estimated to have gone to fhght in

:01:39. > :01:41.Syria according to police. Those going are often young men inspired,

:01:42. > :01:50.say police, by jihadist ideology on the internet. Today, police met

:01:51. > :01:54.leaders of a Muslim women's group in Banbury. The aim ` to get them

:01:55. > :02:01.involved in stopping their lale relatives travelling abroad. It is a

:02:02. > :02:05.good idea because mums know what their children are doing or

:02:06. > :02:08.thinking, if they have a good relationship with their child. It's

:02:09. > :02:10.this type of imagery, easilx available on social media, that s

:02:11. > :02:13.blamed for encouraging Brithsh Muslims to join the Syrian rebel

:02:14. > :02:18.fight agaist the country's leader, President Assad. The South Dast

:02:19. > :02:27.Counter Terrorism Police ard today launching a new campaign, urging

:02:28. > :02:30.people not to go. We all felt we wanted to do something. Howdver it

:02:31. > :02:33.is a dangerous country. It hs difficult to get into once xou

:02:34. > :02:37.arrive but also we have been finding that people get drawn into

:02:38. > :02:41.activities that they did not want to do when they originally set. More

:02:42. > :02:46.than 40 people from the UK were arrestted in connection with Syria

:02:47. > :02:49.this year. `` arrested. The numbers are small but police fear those

:02:50. > :02:59.who've been drawn into extrdmist ideologies abroad could posd a

:03:00. > :03:02.threat to the UK on their rdturn. Some don't agree with their tactics

:03:03. > :03:05.` religious leaders in Oxfordshire say it should fall to the community

:03:06. > :03:08.to tackle the problem, not the police. I think it is better to have

:03:09. > :03:12.the police and intelligence services in the background rather th`n at the

:03:13. > :03:15.forefront. The other thing H would question is the idea that Mtslim

:03:16. > :03:21.women could somehow stop thdse men going abroad because most of these

:03:22. > :03:26.people who are going abroad to fight are doing it in secret. The fear is

:03:27. > :03:29.that these measures may havd little effect on those those inspired by

:03:30. > :03:33.the idea of fighting jihad, those who see being the prospect of being

:03:34. > :03:39.killed in Syria as a noble lartyr's death.

:03:40. > :03:43.Oxfordshire County Council says it will bid for almost ?5.5 million

:03:44. > :03:46.from a new government fund to fix potholes. With the local eldctions

:03:47. > :03:50.looming, David Cameron has been closer to home in Oxfordshire today,

:03:51. > :03:53.pledging more support ` and money ` to repair damaged roads. Our

:03:54. > :04:00.political reporter, Helen C`tt, was there.

:04:01. > :04:03.Not many politicians would be pleased to find themselves staring

:04:04. > :04:11.into a whole just weeks before an election. But David Cameron was on

:04:12. > :04:17.hand to help fill this one. Applications open today for a new

:04:18. > :04:22.fund to repair potholes. We are setting up this new fund, or ?1 8

:04:23. > :04:29.million, enough to mend 3 mhllion potholes and counties like such will

:04:30. > :04:34.able to apply for that fund in addition to what they are already

:04:35. > :04:41.spending. Oxygen county council said they will apply for up to ?4.4

:04:42. > :04:51.million. At an average cost of 63 a whole, it is no small Bill. There is

:04:52. > :04:55.no guarantee of the money. To get the right of completing up to

:04:56. > :05:01.scratch would take up to 150 million. Some question how luch

:05:02. > :05:07.credit the coalition can take for the repairs. It was the last Labour

:05:08. > :05:09.government that approved thd investment in Reading Station and

:05:10. > :05:12.we're seeing the benefits flooding through and we hope that future

:05:13. > :05:18.investment in the row by industry will deliver the continuing benefits

:05:19. > :05:23.to Reading. The big question will be if smoother rides on our ro`ds and

:05:24. > :05:28.rails will make one easier journey to economic success.

:05:29. > :05:31.Meanwhile, Nick Clegg also launched the Liberal Democrat's European

:05:32. > :05:35.election campaign today. Thd Deputy Prime Minster urged his party to

:05:36. > :05:38.combat the "EU Myth Makers" and went on to criticise Labour and the

:05:39. > :05:46.Conservatives for going "missing in action" instead of challenghng UKIP.

:05:47. > :05:50.Isolationists who for so many years have claimed that every problem in

:05:51. > :05:54.the world could be solved bx leaving the European Union need to be

:05:55. > :05:59.challenged. I hope that people will vote for us.

:06:00. > :06:02.And, over the next few weeks, we'll hear from the other main parties as

:06:03. > :06:09.they launch their European dlection campaigns. Dave Lee Travis has

:06:10. > :06:12.appeared before magistrates in central London, accused of `n

:06:13. > :06:17.indecent assault against a woman in 1995. The 68`year`old presenter who

:06:18. > :06:20.lives in Buckinghamshire, pleaded not guilty and will appear hn court

:06:21. > :06:24.again next month. The Government's given permhssion

:06:25. > :06:26.for a solar farm to be built in Bletchingdon near Bicester. The plan

:06:27. > :06:29.was turned down by Cherwell District Council last year, but that

:06:30. > :06:37.decision's now been overturned by the planning inspector. The Campaign

:06:38. > :06:40.To Protect Rural England saxs the solar farm would be the first in

:06:41. > :06:43.Oxfordshire's green belt and is appealing to the Secretary of State

:06:44. > :06:47.to block the project. There are fears in Swindon that

:06:48. > :06:49.plans to build what's known as "affordable homes" could make rent

:06:50. > :06:53.in the town unaffordable. Swindon Borough Council want to build an

:06:54. > :06:56.extra 150 homes and rent thdm out below the market rate, but

:06:57. > :06:58.campaigners say they'll still be too pricey. Tom Turrell reports.

:06:59. > :07:02.They were designed to be colfortable and yet affordable and, aftdr World

:07:03. > :07:11.War II, they sprung up all over the country. These days, many of these

:07:12. > :07:14.properties are privately owned. Not so long ago, they would havd all

:07:15. > :07:19.been owned by Swindon Borough Council and rented out to the people

:07:20. > :07:22.of Swindon at a reduced ratd. Now Swindon Borough Council's ddcided to

:07:23. > :07:25.bid for ?3.5 million worth of government funding so it can build

:07:26. > :07:33.and renovate 150 affordable homes by 2018. While 20% cheaper than the

:07:34. > :07:37.private market, they are not as heavily discounted as traditional

:07:38. > :07:41.council houses. For campaigners these affordable homes are `nything

:07:42. > :07:47.but affordable. We think thhs is a terrible mistake because it will

:07:48. > :07:53.mean that council housing is no longer genuinely affordable, as they

:07:54. > :07:58.transfer more and more of them to affordable rent. The council,

:07:59. > :08:01.though, insist that, with around 8,000 people in the town wahting for

:08:02. > :08:07.social housing, these properties are needed. Certainly in the sotth`west,

:08:08. > :08:15.there is an endless supply of rented accommodation. Whether that be at

:08:16. > :08:20.market rent or less. We havd to do all we can to make sure we hncrease

:08:21. > :08:24.the supply. It's said an Englishman's home is his castle But

:08:25. > :08:34.it seems that vastle may not be as heavily discounted as some would

:08:35. > :08:36.like. `` that Castle. Trading Standards in Buckinghamshire

:08:37. > :08:39.have found chicken and beef in some lamb kebabs. Officers took samples

:08:40. > :08:42.from take`away shops across the county, including in Aylesbtry.

:08:43. > :08:45.Kebabs can contain a mixturd of meat, as long as it's made clear to

:08:46. > :08:49.customers. Adina Campbell rdports. For some, it's a tasty lunchtime

:08:50. > :08:53.treat or the best way to end a night out. But do we really know what s on

:08:54. > :08:56.that kebab skewer? The simple answer is no if you live in

:08:57. > :09:00.Buckinghamshire. That's according to latest test results from Tr`ding

:09:01. > :09:06.Standards. Officers took salples of meat from take`aways in Ayldsbury,

:09:07. > :09:13.High Wycombe, Amersham and Chesham. They found a majority contahned the

:09:14. > :09:18.wrong kind of meat. You shotld be getting what you pay for and if

:09:19. > :09:22.cheaper products are being substituted, it is to the

:09:23. > :09:26.consumer's detriment. The ntmbers are small but of the 14 lamb doner

:09:27. > :09:30.kebabs tested, 11 contained chicken and one included beef. And of the 13

:09:31. > :09:40.burgers sampled, two had lalb in and one came back as unknown. This road

:09:41. > :09:44.is full of kebabs shops and many are open from 12 in the afternoon until

:09:45. > :09:50.the early hours of the mornhng. How do people here feel about the meat

:09:51. > :09:53.in their food? I think they are generally quite good. I buy them

:09:54. > :09:58.from kebabs shops because they make them freshly, they cook fresh and

:09:59. > :10:01.you know what you're getting. There are things that the customer should

:10:02. > :10:05.know. But no one ever tells us anything. Even though some kebabs do

:10:06. > :10:08.have a mixture of meats, Tr`ding Standards say shops must have clear

:10:09. > :10:15.labelling when advertising their meals.

:10:16. > :10:19.That's all from me for the loment. I'll have the headlines at 8pm and a

:10:20. > :10:21.full bulletin at 10:25pm. Now more of today's stories with Sally

:10:22. > :10:30.Taylor. successful. Still to come in this

:10:31. > :10:33.evening's South Today. On the hunt for a snake in the grass in Finn's

:10:34. > :10:44.Country. We're often told to get on our bikes

:10:45. > :10:46.to keep fit and save the environment. But cyclists are banned

:10:47. > :10:50.from many busy areas. In Bournemouth, that's about to change.

:10:51. > :10:54.Restrictions on cycling are being lifted on the pier approach and part

:10:55. > :10:57.of the town centre. It's part of an attempt to reverse the town's

:10:58. > :11:00.reputation as one of the most dangerous places to cycle in

:11:01. > :11:10.Britain. Nikki Mitchell's there for us tonight. Nikki, this sounds like

:11:11. > :11:14.a difficult balancing act. Ht is difficult. That is why lifthng the

:11:15. > :11:20.ban on cycling through a busy area like this one as controvershal. In

:11:21. > :11:26.July and August, this area hs simply chock`a`block with people. That is

:11:27. > :11:31.why this is a trial only, for 1 months. If there are any accidents

:11:32. > :11:36.in that time then the ban whll be reinstated and cyclists will once

:11:37. > :11:44.again have to get off and w`lk. Cyclist Jason Faulkner almost died

:11:45. > :11:48.when a vehicle hit him in Poole two years ago, but his near fat`l crash

:11:49. > :11:53.is not but cycling, and he hs delighted that the ban is bding

:11:54. > :11:56.lifted. I believe in shared space. When people are responsible with

:11:57. > :12:02.each other, regardless of whether or the bike, driving, rollerbl`des or

:12:03. > :12:08.on horseback, then we inter`ct with people and I am totally all for it.

:12:09. > :12:14.There are fears that a busy tourist spots, the cyclists themselves would

:12:15. > :12:17.be a danger to people on foot. I don't think it should be allowed

:12:18. > :12:24.with children about, especi`lly at holiday time. Sometimes thex, from

:12:25. > :12:29.behind you and you are more aware of them. It makes sense to look out and

:12:30. > :12:35.see what impact it has. As long as they are considerate, with children

:12:36. > :12:37.around. The council says th`t cyclists have not proved to be a

:12:38. > :12:44.threat to people walking along the seafront, or elsewhere. We have had

:12:45. > :12:46.absolutely no incidents or `ccidents between pedestrians and cyclists.

:12:47. > :12:53.That has prompted us to introduce this trial. We want Bournemouth to

:12:54. > :12:56.be a cycle`friendly place. With Bournemouth ranked one of the most

:12:57. > :13:01.dangerous places in England for cyclists, council is under pressure

:13:02. > :13:06.to be more welcome to them, and to make it safer for them, too, hence

:13:07. > :13:13.these plans for new Danish `style cycle lanes and other road

:13:14. > :13:17.improvements. The council is adamant that making things safer for

:13:18. > :13:20.cyclists is crucial to encotrage us to get on our bikes instead of

:13:21. > :13:24.sitting in cars and clogging up the roads. If we are too scared to get

:13:25. > :13:30.on our bikes, then congestion and towns are reliant on to was like

:13:31. > :13:33.this one, will simply get worse Practically, I'm not sure that many

:13:34. > :13:36.people will notice a differdnce with the ban being lifted, because many

:13:37. > :13:49.cyclists simply ignore it, `nyway. That man on his bike. Do yot cycle?

:13:50. > :13:54.I should do more. I do more jogging and running, and golf.

:13:55. > :14:05.The Portsmouth board met today and Andy Awford is expected to be

:14:06. > :14:09.confirmed as the full`time successor to Richie Barker in the comhng days.

:14:10. > :14:12.Awford has led Pompey to five consecutive wins since Barkdr was

:14:13. > :14:17.sacked. Those victories havd transformed Portsmouth's le`gue

:14:18. > :14:20.position. They're now 13th hn the table and well clear of the drop

:14:21. > :14:28.zone. It's made the former Portsmouth defender the overwhelming

:14:29. > :14:31.candidate for the job. Last night we met young Harry Callow, who dreams

:14:32. > :14:35.of golfing stardom one day. But the path to the top can be diffhcult

:14:36. > :14:39.even with a special talent. Georgia Hall is one of the best amateur

:14:40. > :14:42.players in the world, but a lack of backing means she's shelved plans to

:14:43. > :14:47.turn professional` for now `t least. I was on the tee with her this

:14:48. > :14:51.morning. As Bournemouth opposed poster in these birthday, hdr

:14:52. > :14:54.golfing career was at Brussdls. Tundra flesh land battle thd game

:14:55. > :14:58.was Mike Leigh, running amateur She has chosen the latter option because

:14:59. > :15:03.of the challenge of funding a professional career. It is hard

:15:04. > :15:07.because I have trained for ten years to try and turn pro. I have done all

:15:08. > :15:12.the practice that I can but it is just the money side. Unless you have

:15:13. > :15:17.rich parents or you know soleone, you have to try and find another way

:15:18. > :15:21.to raise it. Georgia Hall, from Bournemouth, is a past Brithsh

:15:22. > :15:24.amateur champion at the youth Olympic Festival double gold

:15:25. > :15:27.medallist, but she could not lay in a major tournament in America last

:15:28. > :15:33.month because it was too expensive to travel. I got an invite, which is

:15:34. > :15:39.the hardest thing, and had to turn it down. It is annoying. All I need

:15:40. > :15:45.is to get there, to play, to try and prove myself. With professional

:15:46. > :15:49.plans on hold, she was back training at Parkstone in Dorset todax. In

:15:50. > :15:54.September she will try to e`rn a place on the ladies European tour.

:15:55. > :15:58.There are other targets before that. I have got the Heather Scott coming

:15:59. > :16:04.up, and also the British opdn at the start of August. You did well in it

:16:05. > :16:13.last year, didn't you? Yes, I played my best golf. Posted in Romd, she

:16:14. > :16:14.goes to the open next month and a good performance there would help

:16:15. > :16:25.shine a light on her talents. But there were lacking any shots of

:16:26. > :16:32.you in that. I was not doing too badly. Just limbering up. I have not

:16:33. > :16:41.played much golf, this is a 180 yards par three, 4`iron. Look at

:16:42. > :16:47.that. I said to the cameram`n, did you get it? Didn't somebody just

:16:48. > :17:01.chuck the ball in at the end? That is the rumour. He was forced to

:17:02. > :17:04.abandon his boat mid`ocean `nd thought he'd never see it again But

:17:05. > :17:07.after being rescued from a trans`Atlantic rowing race, Nick

:17:08. > :17:10.Reas and his partner have bden reunited with their boat. Against

:17:11. > :17:14.incredible odds, it was spotted more than 1,000 miles from where it was

:17:15. > :17:18.left, and returned by a frehght ship's crew. It's the final twist of

:17:19. > :17:20.a challenge which was in aid of a breast cancer charity James Ingham

:17:21. > :17:24.reports. Back together, Nick Reas and the boat he left at sea. Two

:17:25. > :17:27.weeks into a trans`Atlantic race, he and his partner were forced to

:17:28. > :17:30.abandon their crossing. The mid Atlantic in mid December. A rowing

:17:31. > :17:35.challenge through huge seas. These were conditions that proved just too

:17:36. > :17:40.much for two men. The waves were getting bigger and bigger and ended

:17:41. > :17:43.up being 30 foot high, and the bow of the boat got plugged in the

:17:44. > :17:51.bottom of a wave. It capsizdd, head over heels. That was pretty scary,

:17:52. > :17:55.being thrown out of the boat, under the boat, under the wave, thinking,

:17:56. > :18:02.how am I going to get out of this situation? With the help of a nearby

:18:03. > :18:05.ship. The apprporiately namdd Sunshine Bliss answered an dmergency

:18:06. > :18:08.call, carrying out a mid`ocdan rescue. It was scary getting onto

:18:09. > :18:14.the vessel. They dropped a step ladder over the side. The rope went

:18:15. > :18:17.under tension and put back off so I was back in the sea for a sdcond

:18:18. > :18:21.time that a but this time not attached to anything, next to this

:18:22. > :18:27.huge, bulk carrier, and that was one of the most scary moments. The

:18:28. > :18:32.rowing boat was left behind but incredibly, months later, it was

:18:33. > :18:37.spotted by a cargo ship, whose crew hauled it on board and delivered it

:18:38. > :18:40.to France. I think we can gdt it shipshape again and that gives us

:18:41. > :18:46.more possibilities. We can still reflect on the money that wd have

:18:47. > :18:51.raised. The total is up to ?173 000, which we are very proud of. That

:18:52. > :18:56.fundraising drive has pushed the two men, despite their ordeal, they are

:18:57. > :19:05.contemplating trying again hn the future. Two children have bden given

:19:06. > :19:08.a rare chance to experience life behind the scenes with the Forestry

:19:09. > :19:13.Commission at the Alice Holt Forest in Hampshire. They spent a day with

:19:14. > :19:16.rangers tracking wildlife and were given an insight into the challenges

:19:17. > :19:20.of juggling the needs of nature and people. For this week's Finn's

:19:21. > :19:35.Country, Roger Finn spent the day eavesdropping. One of the great

:19:36. > :19:39.truths about the English cotntryside is that none of this is truly

:19:40. > :19:43.natural. Pretty much every square inch has been carefully man`ged

:19:44. > :19:48.Today, two children here in Alice Holt Forest are going to get a

:19:49. > :19:55.privileged, unique insight hnto how that works. Amy and James won a

:19:56. > :20:03.competition to spend a day with the Forestry Commission. I have always

:20:04. > :20:08.been quite fond of the outdoors I love the woodland and trees and

:20:09. > :20:13.animals. I like the fresh ahr, and how it is peaceful and when you are

:20:14. > :20:19.outside you get into your in the world, and nobody can tell xou what

:20:20. > :20:24.to do. A glimpse of a littld egret to start the day. Amy's

:20:25. > :20:28.prize`winning entry pitted the woodland throughout the season.

:20:29. > :20:36.James is ten years old and lade his own video. I think trees ard
