:00:37. > :00:37.Oxfordshire County Council. They refer specifically to local

:00:38. > :00:41.authority, or state schools, and not academies. So 383 newly qualified

:00:42. > :02:03.teachers were recruited in Oxfordshire in

:02:04. > :02:06.confidence to speak up to Ofsted, even if they are struggling.

:02:07. > :02:11.Next tonight, a man on a mission to bring back wildlife to a river. Last

:02:12. > :02:15.year, sewage leaked into the River Thame near Aylesbury. Now one

:02:16. > :02:19.environmentalist says the area must be restored to once again become a

:02:20. > :02:22.haven for fish and other wildlife. Tom Turrell has the story.

:02:23. > :02:29.The River Thame, near Aylesbury. Not just a beauty spot, but a home for a

:02:30. > :02:34.wide range of wildlife. I found dead fish on the river and subsequently,

:02:35. > :02:39.I noticed the dragonflies had disappeared. And the river was

:02:40. > :02:42.looking quite dark. Subsequently, I was told by the Environment Agency

:02:43. > :02:45.there had been a major pollution incident. The source of that

:02:46. > :02:49.pollution, here, a few miles upstream at the sewage works in

:02:50. > :02:52.Aylesbury run by Thames Water. Here, they process waste from the

:02:53. > :02:55.surrounding area, but at some point before last July, some of that

:02:56. > :02:59.sewage leaked out into the Thame. Almost a year on and it is not a

:03:00. > :03:02.case of water under the bridge for Doug. He is organising a meeting to

:03:03. > :03:09.encourage local people and the authorities to discuss the problem.

:03:10. > :03:13.We need to see long`term improvements, which means the

:03:14. > :03:16.community has to get involved and start taking an interest in the

:03:17. > :03:21.river. Monitoring it perhaps and taking an interest in what Thames

:03:22. > :03:24.Water are doing to help them maintain their standards so the

:03:25. > :03:27.river improves and gets to where it should we.

:03:28. > :03:30.As for Thames Water, they told me. We already work closely with the

:03:31. > :03:33.River Thame Conservation Trust and have agreed to attend Mr Kennedy's

:03:34. > :03:37.meeting as we understand how important it is for us all to work

:03:38. > :03:39.together to take care of local rivers.

:03:40. > :03:43.So for Doug, it seems further safeguards need to be put in place

:03:44. > :03:47.to avoid a repeat of last year's sewage leak that may include other

:03:48. > :03:53.locals joining him in keeping an eye on the river Thame.

:03:54. > :03:59.In a first for the town, a block of flats in Reading has been bought up

:04:00. > :04:02.by a Middle East investor, before the building is finished. Once

:04:03. > :04:05.largely limited to the London market, overseas speculators are

:04:06. > :04:09.hunting for sites to invest in, further afield. And that could have

:04:10. > :04:16.consequences for local first time buyers, as Joe Campbell explains.

:04:17. > :04:24.Months of completion and this block of flat is something of a landmark.

:04:25. > :04:31.You have got 184 flats under construction. The firm cast with

:04:32. > :04:35.selling them says the first sold was to an overseas investor, a sign

:04:36. > :04:42.Reading is just another London suburb. We have seen it with the

:04:43. > :04:46.block behind, we are attracting investors from wider afield. Most of

:04:47. > :04:52.the investors tended to be local until a few years ago. We have now

:04:53. > :04:56.seen `` sold a tower to a Saudi `based investors so people are

:04:57. > :05:04.beginning to see the merits of Reading and a lot of that is around

:05:05. > :05:08.the access to London. The losers in this first`time buyers. Now it is

:05:09. > :05:13.claimed they are finding it almost impossible to get on the property

:05:14. > :05:18.like a `` ladder here. We have made offers on approximately five or six

:05:19. > :05:24.houses at the asking price. We first`time buyers, not in the chain,

:05:25. > :05:30.with ?100,000 deposit to put down. We do not know where we are going

:05:31. > :05:34.wrong. We do not understand. Such is the demand, this former office block

:05:35. > :05:39.will soon be turned into flats. The builder behind it has launched it 40

:05:40. > :05:44.years ago, turning houses into commercial property. There was great

:05:45. > :05:52.demand for nice modern office space. Ironically, within that period, they

:05:53. > :05:59.are now generally reverting back to residential use. They are going the

:06:00. > :06:02.full circle. For now, it seems, demand for housing means prices will

:06:03. > :06:06.continue to rise to dizzy heights. For those looking for a home in

:06:07. > :06:10.Reading. A word that appeared in a story we

:06:11. > :06:14.covered could make it into a new online dictionary. The word is

:06:15. > :06:18.fatberg, defined as a large mass of solid waste and grease which clogs

:06:19. > :06:21.up the sewage system. It is one of nine words that could go in to

:06:22. > :06:25.Collins' new dictionary for Twitter`related expressions, its

:06:26. > :06:30.Twictionary. A much smaller fatberg than this one was removed from a

:06:31. > :06:32.sewer in Oxford earlier this year. Heavy rain and thunder storms caused

:06:33. > :06:37.disruption Oxfordshire this afternoon. `` in Oxfordshire. This

:06:38. > :06:41.photo was taken by David Davidson, of fork lightening hitting Chinnor.

:06:42. > :06:44.Heavy rain caused flash flooding in Witney's High Street.

:06:45. > :06:46.I think there is more rain on the way tomorrow. Alexis has the

:06:47. > :06:48.forecast. That is it from us for tonight.

:06:49. > :06:56.Goodnight. Good evening, we had a lively day

:06:57. > :07:01.with the thunderstorms and there could be more, and is pretty heavy

:07:02. > :07:06.showers through the first part of the night. Regular easing, but rain

:07:07. > :07:12.about first thing tomorrow and temperatures down to ten, 11 Celsius

:07:13. > :07:16.`` gradually easing. Rain first thing but it is an improving pet

:07:24. > :07:29.drier periods. In the sunshine, temperatures up to 16, 17 Celsius.
