:00:00. > :00:14.Hello and welcome. Tonight, is it a sign of what is to come? The

:00:15. > :00:19.Conservatives win in Swindon, the town seen as a barometer for the

:00:20. > :00:23.general election. In West Oxford, UKIP failed to gain the place on the

:00:24. > :00:29.council they were looking for. A jobs fair is laid on by Honda as the

:00:30. > :00:34.company drives out 450 workers because of falling car sales. And

:00:35. > :00:35.later, a shortage of teachers at this school because they cannot

:00:36. > :00:52.afford to buy homes in the area. Good evening. Politicians, parties

:00:53. > :00:57.and pundits have had their eyes on our region today, on the town that

:00:58. > :01:01.seems to predict the outcome of the next general election, Swindon. The

:01:02. > :01:05.Conservatives have kept control and won seed from Labour. So far the

:01:06. > :01:11.councils have remained in control of the same political party. Oxford has

:01:12. > :01:16.remained under Labour control. The Conservatives have held onto

:01:17. > :01:21.chervil. They have also retained control of West Oxfordshire. In

:01:22. > :01:25.Swindon, Labour hoped to win seats but the Tories have held on. Votes

:01:26. > :01:32.in Milton Keynes Dons still being counted. In a moment, I will be

:01:33. > :01:41.joined by our political reporter, but first this report. Another Tory

:01:42. > :01:44.win in West Oxfordshire. Of the Conservatives may have been fearing

:01:45. > :01:52.the UKIP factor, they need not have worried. They gained two seats and

:01:53. > :01:58.strengthened their position in Cameron's own constituency. Vote

:01:59. > :02:02.share went up compared to last year. We held councils like Swindon and

:02:03. > :02:06.Tamworth, which were Labour for many years before. I am confident that in

:02:07. > :02:10.spite of the difficulties, this is a base from which we can go forward

:02:11. > :02:18.and win. Labour were celebrating, too. Absolutely thrilled. I cannot

:02:19. > :02:22.believe it. I did not know which way it would go. I am absolutely

:02:23. > :02:30.honoured that people have put their faith in me. I am really touched and

:02:31. > :02:36.excited. They also gained two seats in Cherwell. Swindon is often seen

:02:37. > :02:43.as a barometer for the country. So Tory relief here, to, as the council

:02:44. > :02:47.stayed blue. This is probably the best night we have had in the 14

:02:48. > :02:52.years I have been coming here. We have racked up record wins. It was

:02:53. > :02:59.generally a plague on all your houses. We lost seats to UKIP and

:03:00. > :03:04.that has cost us. Better news for Labour in Oxford. They hold control

:03:05. > :03:11.of the City Council, finishing with 17 seats. The Lib Dems got five, the

:03:12. > :03:16.Greens, three. The UKIP vote is essentially a protest vote about

:03:17. > :03:20.posterity. We understand that. It is something that people feel very

:03:21. > :03:24.deeply, that this government is not listening and it has caused the cost

:03:25. > :03:31.of living crisis. We have policies to deal with that. We will deal with

:03:32. > :03:36.UKIP by doing positive things. No seats for UKIP in Oxfordshire or

:03:37. > :03:43.Swindon but they did get plenty of votes. We are up with the big boys

:03:44. > :03:47.and we are sowing the seeds for the next time. Things can look

:03:48. > :03:51.completely different next time. If that is true, next year's general

:03:52. > :04:01.election could be hard to predict. I'm joined by Helen CAT. Any news on

:04:02. > :04:04.Milton Keynes Dons Still not yet. They have been counting all

:04:05. > :04:08.afternoon. We checked before we came on air and they are still counting.

:04:09. > :04:17.We will bring you the result as soon as we have it. A good day for the

:04:18. > :04:21.Conservatives? Yes. Possibly more so than there were expecting. They

:04:22. > :04:27.would be particularly cheered they did not lose any seats to UKIP in

:04:28. > :04:30.Oxfordshire, particularly as Nigel Farage was on radio Oxford a few

:04:31. > :04:35.days ago saying that Oxfordshire was the fastest growing area of support

:04:36. > :04:38.for his party. David Cameron will also be sweeping a little ``

:04:39. > :04:42.sleeping a little more soundly tonight knowing that he has held

:04:43. > :04:48.onto Sweden. That has got to be good news. Labour would be raising a

:04:49. > :04:51.glass to having taken another seat in his backyard, Chipping Norton,

:04:52. > :04:56.and in strengthening their position in Oxford. Despite losses, the Lib

:04:57. > :05:02.Dems do have some comfort. They have held onto several of the seats that

:05:03. > :05:06.would be in their key target seat of Oxford West and Abingdon in the

:05:07. > :05:13.general election. Why have we not heard the European results? They

:05:14. > :05:20.will not be counted until Sunday. Many countries in Europe have not

:05:21. > :05:25.voted yet. Thank you. Swindon's troubled car factory said goodbye to

:05:26. > :05:28.450 workers today. Honda is struggling to sell its cars in

:05:29. > :05:33.Europe and has cut production dramatically. The plant has been

:05:34. > :05:39.mothballed and the total workforce has fallen from 5000 to 3000. A

:05:40. > :05:44.special jobs fair was held this morning. There were 200 jobs on

:05:45. > :05:49.offer in the room and more companies who could not come but can hire. It

:05:50. > :05:53.was a day to look forward for Honda workers. I have already got an

:05:54. > :05:58.interview for them `` with them. I am looking forward to that. A new

:05:59. > :06:05.company that is coming to Swindon. The job I fancy is to work for Aston

:06:06. > :06:10.Marton. It sounds a good job to me. There were fewer volunteers this

:06:11. > :06:14.time around. Some 100 people have left jobs at Honda against their

:06:15. > :06:27.wishes. The unions say that number could have been reduced. More people

:06:28. > :06:32.could have been kept on but Honda decided to employ contract workers.

:06:33. > :06:35.They pay them less than Honda workers. As a result we have seen

:06:36. > :06:39.nearly 100 Honda workers being forced out of their jobs and

:06:40. > :06:43.contract is staying in their jobs that previously Honda workers were

:06:44. > :06:48.doing. The company would not talk today, insisting they must remain

:06:49. > :06:53.flexible. They are doing all they can to safeguard jobs at the plant.

:06:54. > :07:02.While production slows down here, other car firms are going flat out.

:07:03. > :07:06.We cannot get hold of some of the cars. Honda was always in the middle

:07:07. > :07:11.of the range. You are finding that BMW and Audi have brought prices

:07:12. > :07:18.down, and that is nipping at the top end of Honda. Their main products

:07:19. > :07:23.are getting squeezed in the middle. Will be `` will this be the last

:07:24. > :07:32.jobs fair for workers leaving Honda? That depends on Japan. Not the swing

:07:33. > :07:42.Dhoni and to make the cars that might not the Swindon workers. A

:07:43. > :07:46.demonstration has been held in Witney. Many of the protestors

:07:47. > :07:51.suffer from bleeding disorders and claim they were infected after

:07:52. > :07:56.receiving blood transfusions in the 1970s and 1980s. The Government is

:07:57. > :07:59.looking into the situation. People feel so frustrated with what has

:08:00. > :08:04.gone on over the years and the continued procrastination. They have

:08:05. > :08:11.had enough. We are dying at least one a month now. Over a thousand

:08:12. > :08:19.people have died. We're running of time. I feel very passionate, very

:08:20. > :08:28.passionate. It has ruined my life. Take aways are on the increase but

:08:29. > :08:33.restaurants are falling numbers. Last year saw a rising bakers but a

:08:34. > :08:37.fall in shoe shops. The Federation of Small Businesses has launched its

:08:38. > :08:46.keep trade local campaign in Buckinghamshire.

:08:47. > :08:50.Independent, local and thriving. This shop is keeping a presence on

:08:51. > :08:58.the high Street because most of the businesses taking place online. We

:08:59. > :09:03.will never get passing trade back in the high Street again. The way

:09:04. > :09:08.people shop has changed. There is no regular trade any more on the

:09:09. > :09:12.high`street. That is what brought the speaker and booking MMP John

:09:13. > :09:15.Bercow to Winslow today, together with the Federation of Small

:09:16. > :09:20.Businesses, to highlight the plight of the small independent shop. We

:09:21. > :09:29.would like a broader mix across the board, rather than ten charity

:09:30. > :09:36.shops. It would be better to have a butcher and a baker and a hardware

:09:37. > :09:42.store. Selling pet food has put his business among the winners. We

:09:43. > :09:48.opened a second shop and got eight freezers. Two and a half years on we

:09:49. > :09:53.were overwhelmed with the support from the local community and the

:09:54. > :09:59.Aylesbury community. Last year more independent shops closed than open.

:10:00. > :10:02.The economy and cost of living will continue to be the political battle

:10:03. > :10:08.ground between now and polling day next year. All the evidence of

:10:09. > :10:12.decades of general elections is that they have tended to turn, not

:10:13. > :10:17.exclusively, but very significantly on how people are doing, how they

:10:18. > :10:25.think they are going in 12 months to be doing and how they think the

:10:26. > :10:30.country is doing. And for the speaker, a spot of spontaneous

:10:31. > :10:37.shopping in the form of pet food. I think he will enjoy his feast. Order

:10:38. > :10:44.is the name of his cat. There are positive signs of a resurgence in

:10:45. > :10:50.this sector, but the secret to success is offering a service the

:10:51. > :10:55.big players cannot compete with. A four`year`old boy from Oxford has

:10:56. > :11:01.been rescued from the roof of a house in Haddington by firefighters.

:11:02. > :11:05.George Groves climbed out of a window from the third floor of a

:11:06. > :11:13.family friend's house and ended up sitting in the covering before being

:11:14. > :11:18.rescued. I cannot describe how scared I was. I was speechless. My

:11:19. > :11:23.mind is blank. I don't know what to do. I cannot describe how scared I

:11:24. > :11:29.was. Any second he could slip off and that is the end of the world.

:11:30. > :11:35.That is all from me for the moment. I will be back at 10:25pm when we

:11:36. > :11:58.should know more election results. More on the Sunday Politics.

:11:59. > :12:09.The work of Cecil Beaton goes on show in Salisbury. Armed police in

:12:10. > :12:13.Dorset have shot at a vehicle outside a branch of Nationwide

:12:14. > :12:18.Building Society in Poole. It happened at about eight o'clock last

:12:19. > :12:21.night in Broadstone. Police had to shoot tyre deflation rounds into the

:12:22. > :12:27.vehicle to disable it. Three men have been arrested on suspicion of

:12:28. > :12:30.conspiracy to commit robbery. The families of four British sailors

:12:31. > :12:34.missing in the Atlantic say they are saddened by news that a US Coast

:12:35. > :12:38.Guard search could be suspended later tonight if nothing is found.

:12:39. > :12:43.James Male, from Romsey, and Andrew Bridge from Farnham, have been

:12:44. > :12:46.missing for the last week. They were part of the crew on the Cheeki

:12:47. > :12:50.Rafiki, which was sailing back into Southampton when it got into trouble

:12:51. > :12:59.last week. An RAF Hercules plane will continue searching tomorrow. A

:13:00. > :13:09.new rail franchise promises new trains, better seats and better

:13:10. > :13:19.services. The `` it merges the current Thames Link and Southern

:13:20. > :13:23.roots. Paul Clifton reports. The new company will carry one in

:13:24. > :13:30.five of all Britain's rail passengers. It will get 1400 new

:13:31. > :13:35.carriages. Overall it will run 500 more than there are today. That is a

:13:36. > :13:42.huge increase in capacity. 10,000 more rush`hour seeds each day. Most

:13:43. > :13:45.of this was already known. But a complete new fleet of Gatwick

:13:46. > :13:52.Express trains to replace these old ones, that is a surprise. They will

:13:53. > :13:57.be running just two years from now. The passenger, quite rightly, will

:13:58. > :14:02.say this is good news because we are going to see a better chance of

:14:03. > :14:07.getting a seat, more capacity, more rolling stock and an infrastructure

:14:08. > :14:10.being put in place which is now capable of delivering for the 21st

:14:11. > :14:17.century. 100 stations will get free Wi`Fi. No mention though of what

:14:18. > :14:24.passengers would prefer. That is free Wi`Fi on`board the trains.

:14:25. > :14:28.Today's deal makes this the biggest train operator. A joint venture

:14:29. > :14:32.between go ahead and part of the French state`owned railway. The

:14:33. > :14:38.changeover starts in September. Here is a little context. This company

:14:39. > :14:42.will carry 273 million passenger journeys a year. Nationwide that as

:14:43. > :14:48.more people than at every airline at every airport, and every traveller

:14:49. > :14:59.on every ferry combined. It is a big deal.

:15:00. > :15:03.Two men have been charged today with keeping three people in slavery and

:15:04. > :15:09.the car wash in Southampton. The group work kept as forced labour.

:15:10. > :15:18.Emma Vardy is in our newsroom. At this stage, what do we know? Police

:15:19. > :15:22.and immigration officers visited a car wash on Monday and they found

:15:23. > :15:25.ten men, all from Romania, who they believe may have been the victim of

:15:26. > :15:31.trafficking, exploitation and possible slavery. What modern`day

:15:32. > :15:35.slavery actually means in reality is not so much that people are being

:15:36. > :15:39.locked away, but that they may be being subjected to some form of

:15:40. > :15:47.intimidation or macro control. The two men involved are both from

:15:48. > :15:52.Southampton. They were charged with ten counts of slavery. How our

:15:53. > :15:58.authorities being made aware of this? Trafficking and exploitation

:15:59. > :16:01.is an issue authorities are increasingly taking seriously.

:16:02. > :16:05.Police are being encouraged to spot the signs, perhaps were somebody is

:16:06. > :16:09.allowed to legally live and work in this country but may be vulnerable

:16:10. > :16:12.and the victim of exportation. The Government is also introducing new

:16:13. > :16:17.measures to tackle modern`day slavery. There is a bill going

:16:18. > :16:22.through Parliament. We have also had some other similar operations to

:16:23. > :16:26.this in the south. In March, six men were rescued after a police raid on

:16:27. > :16:30.a garage in Bournemouth, were men were living in a caravan on site.

:16:31. > :16:33.Hampshire Police say there is something of a national picture

:16:34. > :16:38.building up which shows that some car washes are linked with organised

:16:39. > :16:42.crime. Police have urged people who use car washes to consider whether

:16:43. > :16:47.they are above board. The ten men rescued from the car wash are being

:16:48. > :16:52.supported and looked after. The two men charged with slavery will return

:16:53. > :16:55.to court next month. Last night we reported on the

:16:56. > :16:59.problems of first time buyers being forced out of the housing market.

:17:00. > :17:05.Whether you are buying or renting, the South has some of the highest

:17:06. > :17:08.living costs. That is having an impact on employers. We have been to

:17:09. > :17:16.a school in North Hampshire looking to recruit teachers. This is

:17:17. > :17:19.Avril's first teaching job. She can only afford to work here because she

:17:20. > :17:26.has been able to move back in with her parents. The compromise I made

:17:27. > :17:33.to get a good school was to move back home, unfortunately! It is not

:17:34. > :17:41.ideal at my age. I make a 40 minute commute to work every day. Still

:17:42. > :17:44.this junior school is struggling to find stuff. A few years ago it would

:17:45. > :17:50.get as many as 20 applicants per vacancy. Now it is only getting one

:17:51. > :17:53.or two. We have a few vacancies left to fail and it is a real difficulty.

:17:54. > :17:59.We are very picky about the quality of the candidate we want. It is very

:18:00. > :18:04.difficult for people to live here with the cost of housing. Last year

:18:05. > :18:08.a recruitment crisis prompted pupils in Winchester to make this video in

:18:09. > :18:17.an attempt to find a new headteacher. Westfield has resorted

:18:18. > :18:21.to nationwide Twitter appeals. I have only just started looking for a

:18:22. > :18:27.house. It is a bit more expensive than I had anticipated. I would love

:18:28. > :18:31.to apply here. But looking cost wise of renting, trying to find somewhere

:18:32. > :18:35.to live, the area is far too expensive. This school is not alone

:18:36. > :18:42.in its struggle to attract the right candidates. There are 346 teaching

:18:43. > :18:49.vacancies in state schools in Hampshire alone.

:18:50. > :18:58.I'll disport, Lewis is here. Shall we talk cricket? All day it has been

:18:59. > :19:02.torrential. Apparently now there is glorious sunshine. Shall we talk

:19:03. > :19:07.Hampshire? They have started really well, haven't they? They had a great

:19:08. > :19:11.win during the week against Leicestershire. They lost in the T

:19:12. > :19:16.20. They have a great chance to finish it tonight. They are back to

:19:17. > :19:23.the G20 blast competition against Sussex. The match begins at Hove at

:19:24. > :19:30.seven o'clock. Sussex have won both of their opening games. Chris Wood

:19:31. > :19:35.could be included for the first time this season after injury.

:19:36. > :19:40.Meanwhile, Sussex cricketer Chris Jordan starred for England in their

:19:41. > :19:46.one`day international wing over Sri Lanka. He smashed 38 runs of 14

:19:47. > :19:53.deliveries to help England reach 347`6. With the ball, he took three

:19:54. > :19:57.wickets. England won by 81 runs. Staying with cricket, the England

:19:58. > :19:59.and Wales Cricket board have referred the Guardian newspaper to

:20:00. > :20:04.the Press Complaints Commission regarding an interview with

:20:05. > :20:07.Hampshire batsmen Michael Carberry. In the interview, he claimed he had

:20:08. > :20:15.been the victim of unfair treatment by the England managing. ``

:20:16. > :20:20.Management. The board feels the tone of the article was on balance. Last

:20:21. > :20:24.night, Keegan Bradley from the Isle of Wight won the PDC world youth

:20:25. > :20:31.championship title in darts, in front of a sell`out crowd at the O2

:20:32. > :20:36.Arena. He came from 3`1 down to defeat his Austrian opponent. It

:20:37. > :20:42.included a one to one finish on his way to the ?10,000 first prize. ``

:20:43. > :20:56.121. When he was 3`1 ahead, I thought, Ho, no. You have practised

:20:57. > :21:01.hard. He got back to 5`4. It should not have been a deciding leg.

:21:02. > :21:05.Thankfully, touch wood, it has gone my way. It is great to see it means

:21:06. > :21:12.so much to him. In golf at Wentworth, Justin Rose finish that

:21:13. > :21:17.one over par. It leaves the U.S. Open champion at one under at the

:21:18. > :21:29.halfway stage. Nine shots behind Thomas Bjorn. Rainey and Wentworth,

:21:30. > :21:33.sunny and Hove. A mixed bag. We will have the weather in a moment. First

:21:34. > :21:41.though, Sir Cecil Beaton was renowned for his fashion and

:21:42. > :21:44.portrait photography, but also for having a number of notorious love

:21:45. > :21:49.affairs. Now an exhibition containing most 200 Sotheby's

:21:50. > :21:58.photographs has opened at the Salisbury Museum. Our reporter went

:21:59. > :22:03.along for a look. A sparkling career capturing the glitterati of the day

:22:04. > :22:11.and even royalty. Through his portraits and photography Cecil

:22:12. > :22:17.Beaton gained celebrity status. He had a special retreat of his own.

:22:18. > :22:22.Ashcombe house. Ashcombe is a very isolated house. It allowed him the

:22:23. > :22:37.chance to decorated how he and slightly mad bohemian friends.

:22:38. > :22:40.His two Wiltshire homes set an impressive stage for entertaining,

:22:41. > :22:48.causing quite a stir among local village life. The family who ran the

:22:49. > :22:55.local shop were amazed at him ordering extraordinary things like

:22:56. > :23:02.bottled water in 1951! They said, why you ordering that? He is a

:23:03. > :23:06.sophisticated character. It was not just eccentricities outside the home

:23:07. > :23:08.that got neighbours talking. He was more adventurous inside. His circus

:23:09. > :27:14.bedroom has been recreated. you. Just to remind you about the

:27:15. > :27:19.local elections, if you want to know what is happening in your area, go

:27:20. > :27:20.to the BBC website. On Sunday, we will have the election results

:27:21. > :27:36.programme. Whatever you are doing this bank

:27:37. > :27:56.holiday weekend, enjoy yourselves. Bye`bye. Good night.

:27:57. > :28:00.Let's look at the history of BBC TWO with me, Simon Schama.

:28:01. > :28:05.'Harry And Paul's Story Of The 2s - part of

:28:06. > :28:10.'the Big Bumper Bank Holiday Comedy 50th Birthday Weekend.'
