:10:00. > :10:05.to the Commonwealth Games. The new Chief Constable of

:10:06. > :10:07.Sussex Police says job lossds could be heavier and last longer than had

:10:08. > :10:10.previously been thought. In his first interview in the role,

:10:11. > :10:12.Giles York says he expects the force's budget to be cut

:10:13. > :10:15.by around ?50 million Mr York, who's been the Deptty Chief

:10:16. > :10:22.Constable since 2008, was in charge of policing the Balcombe

:10:23. > :10:25.anti`fracking protests last summer. New in the job, but there is

:10:26. > :10:33.the same old problem ` monex. Giles York says Sussex Police has

:10:34. > :10:36.already had to cut about ?50 million from its budget

:10:37. > :10:39.in the last five years. He acknowledges there will probably

:10:40. > :10:41.be similar cuts We have reduced previously by just

:10:42. > :10:51.over 300 officers and 300 staff, so by purely doing the maths on it we

:10:52. > :10:56.may be looking to do the same again. We have been adamant, I have been

:10:57. > :11:01.adamant about protecting thd level of resourcing we are put into

:11:02. > :11:05.neighbourhood policing to d`te. This is a significant part

:11:06. > :11:07.of our resource. We will need to find a different way

:11:08. > :11:11.of delivering the same level One of the challenges facing

:11:12. > :11:16.the new chief constable is tackling Already two men

:11:17. > :11:19.from Sussex have travelled to Syria How surprised were you that two

:11:20. > :11:28.people from Sussex ended up in these conflict zones

:11:29. > :11:31.and ended up being killed? I think it is always surprising

:11:32. > :11:34.but we do see in the news that people are travelling out there and

:11:35. > :11:37.they have to come from somewhere. We have active Sussex communities

:11:38. > :11:40.and again I would say that, if people are aware, if people are

:11:41. > :11:45.worried, please come and talk to us because we have access that can

:11:46. > :11:53.allow support to help them. Giles York was involved

:11:54. > :11:55.in policing protests last ydar. It was revealed recently covert

:11:56. > :12:00.surveillance was used by thd force I don't think it is rising peaceful

:12:01. > :12:12.protest in any way at all. I don't think it is

:12:13. > :12:15.criminalising peaceful protest in any way at all. Covert methods are

:12:16. > :12:17.legitimate, they lawful, and they are sometimes a very efficient way

:12:18. > :12:20.of being able to deliver policing. How will Giles York measure success

:12:21. > :12:23.when he finishes his term as He says one thing is he would

:12:24. > :12:31.like the community to feel safer. When people are asked what they want

:12:32. > :12:35.from the police, A new enquiry centre opened

:12:36. > :12:41.in Salisbury this week, which some It's located at the rear of

:12:42. > :12:51.the Bourne Hill council offhces on Police officers will be working

:12:52. > :12:55.alongside Council staff, with both saying the new arrangement will

:12:56. > :13:04.lead to a better service overall. This is the new public face of

:13:05. > :13:10.policing in Salisbury, if you can find it. We are going to go out of

:13:11. > :13:15.the car park, down the road, down an alleyway through a hole in the wall

:13:16. > :13:18.to get to the new police st`tion. Then we have to do a sharp turn

:13:19. > :13:21.right and this is what we are greeted with.

:13:22. > :13:26.Still no signs, we are just walking blindly forward. If you then are

:13:27. > :13:30.wise enough to glance right, you will see staff and the business is

:13:31. > :13:34.by appointment only. But this is the way in? This is the

:13:35. > :13:37.way into the police station. When it is six o'clock in the winter

:13:38. > :13:41.and you are walking down a dark alleyway through a hole in the wall

:13:42. > :13:44.to get to the main police station, I don't think that is acceptable to

:13:45. > :13:46.the public. And I don't think that is acceptable to the public.

:13:47. > :13:47.Undoubtably, budget cuts coling is acceptable to the public.

:13:48. > :13:48.Undoubtably, budget cuts coming to Undoubtably, budget cuts coling to

:13:49. > :13:54.this decision. This building was originally designed staff, but the

:13:55. > :13:58.the police makes sense in terms of a strategy of getting teams to work

:13:59. > :14:01.together more closely and making the together more closely and m`king the

:14:02. > :14:06.best use of public funds. It also says it will be improving

:14:07. > :14:10.signage. Generally, when people have access to the police they do not go

:14:11. > :14:13.to the police station, they will dial 999.

:14:14. > :14:17.We want officers outside, so the fact we have it operating in this

:14:18. > :14:21.way at the moment as for appointment only, that will continue but we are

:14:22. > :14:25.happy if someone wants to come to the police station, obviously they

:14:26. > :14:26.will come through. This is where they have moved

:14:27. > :14:27.will come through. This is where they have movdd from.

:14:28. > :14:31.This is where they have moved from. An opportunity to sell to good to

:14:32. > :14:33.miss, it is being developed for a new skill, but it meant offhcers

:14:34. > :14:38.new skill, but it meant officers going to different locations. A new

:14:39. > :14:43.police campus is due to open within two years at this leisure cdntre but

:14:44. > :14:47.for now response teams are based in Amesbury. There is no custody suite,

:14:48. > :14:49.it is hoped one will be built on this site, but in the meanthme

:14:50. > :14:52.this site, but in the meantime anyone arrested is being taken 6

:14:53. > :14:54.miles to Melksham. This forms anyone arrested is being taken 36

:14:55. > :14:55.miles to Melksham. This forls an miles to Melksham. This forls an

:14:56. > :15:00.overall strategy for the police. We have to recognise as budgets and

:15:01. > :15:04.resources reduce, we have to police differently. Working with p`rtner

:15:05. > :15:10.agencies, in better equipped and more modern business `` buildings

:15:11. > :15:12.will improve the quality of service we provide.

:15:13. > :15:13.Both the police and council say technology is changing working

:15:14. > :15:17.technology is changing workhng practices. They want policing to be

:15:18. > :15:26.about what is being done rather than where it is being done from.

:15:27. > :15:29.A Dorset town says business is booming thanks to a policy of

:15:30. > :15:31.restricting out of town ret`ilers. In 2011, an independent review

:15:32. > :15:35.commissioned by the governmdnt suggested that high streets across

:15:36. > :15:38.the country were at "crisis point", with vacancy rates shooting up. But

:15:39. > :15:41.Sherborne has just a handful of empty shops. Simon Clemison has been

:15:42. > :15:54.Sherborne does not have a bhg supermarket a few miles drive away,

:15:55. > :15:58.and many believe that has helped keep this high street alive.

:15:59. > :16:02.There are just a handful of empty shops here. Most tills ringing, and

:16:03. > :16:05.for the owner of this coffed shop for the owner of this coffee shop

:16:06. > :16:09.that is because businesses `re still that is because businesses are still

:16:10. > :16:12.clustered in one place. When they come into town to go to

:16:13. > :16:16.the book shop, the shoe shop, the wine shop, they then come in for a

:16:17. > :16:18.coffee on the way back to their car. If they went to a superstore

:16:19. > :16:18.coffee on the way back to their car. If they went to a superstord they

:16:19. > :16:22.If they went to a superstore they would do it all in one placd and not

:16:23. > :16:25.coming to town. There are chains stores and

:16:26. > :16:29.supermarkets here, but in the centre of time, not on the outskirts.

:16:30. > :16:33.Planning guidelines do try to protect the town centre and stop

:16:34. > :16:43.anything that may have a negative impact on it. In short, it is not

:16:44. > :16:45.just that Sherborne does not have a big store on a ring road somewhere.

:16:46. > :16:46.big store on a ring road solewhere. It is that bigger stores on ring

:16:47. > :16:48.roads do not get off the drawing roads do not get off the dr`wing

:16:49. > :16:49.board. What would it mean to have a

:16:50. > :16:50.board. What would it mean to have ` big

:16:51. > :16:51.supermarket out of town? There would be more variety with

:16:52. > :16:54.stuff. You cannot get have as much as you

:16:55. > :16:56.can in these supermarkets in Sherborne as you can in a bigger

:16:57. > :17:02.one, so it is easier. As I am a parent it is cheaper for

:17:03. > :17:03.kids and basically food. Many local politicians, though, are

:17:04. > :17:07.Many local politicians, thotgh, are clear about what they want to see in

:17:08. > :17:11.their town. My understanding is, and the

:17:12. > :17:14.principle on which we all work, is that we discouraged edge of town and

:17:15. > :17:21.out town retail. We have a thriving high street, you know, cheap Street

:17:22. > :17:26.is full of wonderful shops, and we want to see them continue. Whether

:17:27. > :17:30.the Sherborne of today will be the Sherborne of tomorrow, no one knows,

:17:31. > :17:35.but the Sherborne of yesterday is being preserved.

:18:18. > :18:21.cerebral palsy, but to allow him to be able to move his muscles would be

:18:22. > :18:24.good for him. It is great independence for him to
