:00:00. > :00:00.Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford.

:00:07. > :00:12.Ben Blakely is told he'll serve at last 20 years

:00:13. > :00:14.for murdering his pregnant ex`girlfriend, Jayden Parkinson.

:00:15. > :00:27.We will never get to see her grow up, get married and have children.

:00:28. > :00:30.This is our life sentence, it is time for him to start his.

:00:31. > :00:33.A mother of four is sent to prison for her part in an arson

:00:34. > :00:37.Fiaz Munchi has been sentenced to 13 years for manslaughter.

:00:38. > :00:39.Will crowds see something similar on Sunday?

:00:40. > :00:42.We'll tell you where you can and can't go to watch Didcot's

:00:43. > :00:54.The ban on wartime bathing, 70 years today, holiday`makers celebrated the

:00:55. > :01:06.end of the ban in Bournemouth. Police have described it as

:01:07. > :01:10."one of the most disturbing cases in This afternoon, Ben Blakely,

:01:11. > :01:12.the man found guilty of murdering Jayden Parkingson,

:01:13. > :01:15.has been given a life sentence. He's been told he'll spend

:01:16. > :01:17.at least 20 years in prison. Blakeley killed Jayden,

:01:18. > :01:19.who was pregnant, last December, and buried her body

:01:20. > :01:21.in his uncle's grave in Didcot. Today, a jury failed to reach

:01:22. > :01:24.a verdict on Ben's younger brother Jake who faced a charge

:01:25. > :01:27.of unlawfully burying a body. Victoria Cook is at

:01:28. > :01:31.Oxford Crown Court. Victoria,

:01:32. > :01:42.what's the reaction been there? An incredibly difficult afternoon

:01:43. > :01:48.for the family and friends of Jayden Parkinson. The judge passed his

:01:49. > :01:55.sentence. There were sounds of crying across the court room as he

:01:56. > :01:59.said, passing the sentence, saying Ben Blakely had created a web of

:02:00. > :02:03.lies to the police and it would require a heart of stone to keep up

:02:04. > :02:08.that pretence and to deal with the body in the way you did. Outside

:02:09. > :02:12.court, the family bed at a statement saying they were pleased they had

:02:13. > :02:15.seen justice. They wanted to thank people from Didcot and around the

:02:16. > :02:20.world for their support for the family.

:02:21. > :02:27.For this, we will always be grateful from the bottom of our hearts. We

:02:28. > :02:36.found strength from the messages of support from strangers worldwide. We

:02:37. > :02:47.will never be able to thank them. Or to forgive Ben Blakely for the evil

:02:48. > :02:52.that murdered Jayden and concealed her body with such a cold,

:02:53. > :02:57.calculated and callous manner. We will never get to see her grow up,

:02:58. > :03:05.get married and have children. This is our life sentence, it is time for

:03:06. > :03:08.Ben Blakely to start his. There are two unique features. The

:03:09. > :03:14.first is we charged someone with murder before we found the body,

:03:15. > :03:17.which is always going to make the situation more complicated.

:03:18. > :03:23.The second unique feature which was not overlooked by the judge is he

:03:24. > :03:28.buried her in a pre`existing grave, and we are satisfied that has not

:03:29. > :03:33.ever happened in the UK before. This afternoon, the judge also

:03:34. > :03:38.commented on the domestic abuse element, and said to Ben Blakely,

:03:39. > :03:45.that's the many victims of domestic violence, Jayden was infatuated by

:03:46. > :03:49.you. You deliberately and selfishly encouraged her emotional dependence

:03:50. > :03:54.on you by manipulating her feelings through fear. This raises questions

:03:55. > :03:56.as to what more could have been done to save Jayden and what lessons can

:03:57. > :03:59.be learned from this case. The murder of Jayden Parkinson was

:04:00. > :04:01.shocking, not least because the 17`year`old was pregnant

:04:02. > :04:04.with Ben Blakeley's baby. Such a violent act wasn't

:04:05. > :04:14.unexpected by everyone. They used to say he was a bully,

:04:15. > :04:32.controlling. In my mind I would

:04:33. > :04:37.say he was a bully. Being hit,

:04:38. > :04:39.no man should have hit a woman. This case has highlighted

:04:40. > :04:41.the growing awareness of Police have called on victims to

:04:42. > :04:46.come forward but campaigners say it difficult for women to escape once

:04:47. > :04:54.they become involved with Lebanon. Most women

:04:55. > :04:59.if they do leave a relationship, Women who do not have access to

:05:00. > :05:06.specialist support to help them through that,

:05:07. > :05:10.it can be incredibly dangerous. It is not

:05:11. > :05:12.a simple to think she should go. This case leaves

:05:13. > :05:15.questions unanswered. Now, a series of reviews will

:05:16. > :05:17.look at what went wrong. Thames Valley Police's role is being

:05:18. > :05:20.independently assessed, There's also This will look at the part social

:05:21. > :05:24.services played, and the support The hostel where Jayden had

:05:25. > :05:28.been staying before her death It's hoped the findings will help

:05:29. > :05:42.protect vulnerable young people There is now going to be two

:05:43. > :05:47.separate investigations into how the police and local authorities dealt

:05:48. > :05:51.with Jayden Parkinson while she was alive and went missing. Both of

:05:52. > :05:56.those will report next year. This trial is not completely over because

:05:57. > :06:00.the jury failed to reach a verdict on Ben Blakely's younger brother who

:06:01. > :06:09.was accused of preventing a lawful burial, burying Jayden. He denies

:06:10. > :06:10.this. A decision about a retrial just for the younger brother will be

:06:11. > :06:13.made next Friday. Meanwhile, a mother of four has been

:06:14. > :06:16.sentenced to 13 years in prison for her part in an arson attack which

:06:17. > :06:19.killed two children in Oxford. Fiaz Munshi had denied being

:06:20. > :06:22.involved in the fire in 1997 but, earlier this week,

:06:23. > :06:24.was found guilty of manslaughter. It's been 17 years since this

:06:25. > :06:30.grieving mother's been able to visit Eight`year`old Anum,

:06:31. > :06:38.and Majid who was 15. Until today,

:06:39. > :06:41.a journey she says she's emotionally Her family say Mehfooz Akhtar's

:06:42. > :06:48.life ended in the embers of her She attempted suicide,

:06:49. > :06:52.and had to be sectioned as she These scenes, just minutes after

:06:53. > :06:58.seeing the woman who helped plot Fiaz Munchi, a mother of four,

:06:59. > :07:05.the final person convicted Fiaz Munchi is an evil

:07:06. > :07:15.and sick woman. The driving force behind this

:07:16. > :07:18.revenge attack and knew all along she was the motive for

:07:19. > :07:21.revenge, not the drugs or affairs. She did nothing but lie

:07:22. > :07:23.from day one. She went on to have four children

:07:24. > :07:27.of her own, and I hope her family might have a semblance

:07:28. > :07:30.of the pain she perpetrated on us. Five others and Fiaz's sister Riaz

:07:31. > :07:32.were all previously jailed Fiaz was outcast by her family

:07:33. > :07:39.after a secret romance with Amjad This led to her

:07:40. > :07:45.and the others firebombing The police have apologised for

:07:46. > :07:49.delays in bringing Fiaz to justice, I hope the severity of this sentence

:07:50. > :08:08.shows to people how seriously the court took this case, how seriously

:08:09. > :08:11.they felt, how fundamental they saw The Khan family invited us

:08:12. > :08:16.here today to witness this most They say to show they're survivors,

:08:17. > :08:20.united and defiant against those who In sentencing Fiaz to 13 years,

:08:21. > :08:27.the judge said her day of reckoning has arrived, she cared

:08:28. > :08:29.nothing for the most fundamental Hundreds of tonnes of waste has now

:08:30. > :08:36.been removed from the Averies Recycling site in Swindon, following

:08:37. > :08:38.a huge fire on Monday evening. 1,000 tonnes of waste went up

:08:39. > :08:40.in flames, and fire fighters are still working

:08:41. > :08:44.on the site to put out rubbish piles Crews are expected to be there

:08:45. > :08:48.for several days. People who've booked holidays with

:08:49. > :08:51.Wiltshire based Hatts Travel could lose both their holiday and their

:08:52. > :08:54.money. The coach company has gone bust, and has cancelled around

:08:55. > :08:58.?1,000 holidays with immediate effect. Hatts isn't a member of the

:08:59. > :09:00.Association of British Travel Agents, which could make it more

:09:01. > :09:03.difficult for people to get a refund. The firm had been trading

:09:04. > :09:06.for almost 100 years. 89 staff will A man from Aylesbury who's fought

:09:07. > :09:14.off cancer and an alcohol addiction has praised

:09:15. > :09:17.the team who helped his recovery. The Prevention Matters scheme has

:09:18. > :09:21.been supporting vulnerable adults in It's been so successful that it

:09:22. > :09:26.could now be rolled out I was a mess,

:09:27. > :09:36.I was just a complete mess, I mean, 20 cans of strong cider every day,

:09:37. > :09:39.and a bottle of vodka every day. And now I realise what

:09:40. > :09:42.life really is now. To describe the last few years

:09:59. > :10:10.What have I done to my life? How did I ruin my life? I've got

:10:11. > :10:13.such lovely people about me. I've found a new life

:10:14. > :10:18.which I should have found That new life was largely thanks to

:10:19. > :10:23.support from Prevention Matters, an organisation that's helped more

:15:45. > :16:04.Daniel Rivers from England has got a new Commonwealth Games record in

:16:05. > :16:06.qualifying. Didcot's Dan Rivers was the man to

:16:07. > :16:09.beat after storming qualifying But the final went

:16:10. > :16:13.down to the wire ` he claimed bronze A shoot off was the undoing of

:16:14. > :16:20.hotly`tipped teenager Amber Hill. She just missed out on reaching the

:16:21. > :16:23.final. An injury meant Wokingham's

:16:24. > :16:25.Megan Fletcher had to have her face taped up midway through her

:17:34. > :17:39.Danny Williams from the judo has won gold in the under 73 kilograms.

:17:40. > :17:40.Fantastic news. More on that in the late news tonight.

:17:41. > :17:43.Cricket, and Hampshire's Ageas Bowl is gearing up to host

:17:44. > :17:45.the test match this weekend between England and India.

:17:46. > :17:47.It'll be only the second test the venue has hosted.

:17:48. > :17:55.The Ageas Bowl held its maiden test match in 2011, a rain`soaked draw

:17:56. > :18:00.Now the ground will be hosting its second test, when India visit

:18:01. > :18:04.Hampshire for Sunday's third match against England.

:18:05. > :18:07.India looked relaxed in training for Sunday's third test.

:18:08. > :18:09.Hardly surprising as they're one match up

:18:10. > :18:14.England's Test debutant Jos Buttler will replace Sussex's Matt Prior

:18:15. > :18:24.He has good memories of the Ageas Bowl.

:18:25. > :18:31.My first 100 was here, we had some exciting 2020 finals day in Somerset

:18:32. > :18:35.as well so I enjoyed the ground, I like the place and it will be a

:18:36. > :18:36.place that holds some special memories come Sunday morning.

:18:42. > :18:49.They are hurting and disappointed that they are not playing their

:18:50. > :18:52.brand of cricket and getting the results they wanted but there is the

:18:53. > :18:54.underlying determination from everyone to turn that around and put

:18:55. > :18:56.results right. What could make

:18:57. > :18:59.a real difference to the result is the wicket, it's reportedly looking

:19:00. > :19:01.to be in better condition than the first two matches, so we could

:19:02. > :19:07.see some really exciting cricket. Hampshire's chairman hopes

:19:08. > :19:09.the quality of that wicket and a successful test match could be

:19:10. > :19:20.the beginning of even bigger things I would still want to stage an Ashes

:19:21. > :19:24.Test match, I don't want to be saddled with the reputation of being

:19:25. > :19:28.the only England Test match ground that has never been awarded an Ashes

:19:29. > :19:34.Test match. We must put our best foot forward and put a strong case.

:19:35. > :19:36.Unusually this Test starts on a Sunday.

:21:01. > :21:08.By jumping in for a swim at his local pool in Surrey of course!

:21:09. > :21:17.Happy birthday to John. Isn't that brilliant? The secret to his youth.

:21:18. > :21:20.Congratulations, John. It has been another lovely day. For many it is

:21:21. > :21:28.the start of the summer holidays. Thousands have flocked to
