:00:00. > :00:00.other news on the BBC News Channel, and on our website, but that is all

:00:00. > :00:00.for now. It is Hello and welcome to South Today

:00:00. > :00:00.from Oxford. A hospital launches an investigation

:00:07. > :00:10.into breast cancer screening. It's after five women given

:00:11. > :00:13.the all clear by the same doctor 30 women are being recalled

:00:14. > :00:19.for further tests. Also tonight:

:00:20. > :00:22.The result are in ` but what next? As students discover their A`Level

:00:23. > :00:24.results, more teenagers are encouraged to

:00:25. > :00:28.consider apprenticeships. A warning to pet owners `

:00:29. > :00:31.about the growing problem of fleas. The weather is said to be a factor

:00:32. > :00:36.in the rise in infestations. 75 triathlons in 75 days

:00:37. > :00:42.for birthday girl Daphne, An investigation has begun

:00:43. > :00:58.after five women from Oxfordshire developed breast cancer

:00:59. > :01:01.after being given the all clear A further 30 women have been

:01:02. > :01:06.contacted this week and asked to take further tests after their

:01:07. > :01:09.medical records were reviewed. 60 women have also been contacted

:01:10. > :01:13.in Buckinghamshire. NHS Trusts in Oxford

:01:14. > :01:16.and Buckinghamshire have reassured patients that their breast screening

:01:17. > :01:19.tests are reliable. In a moment, I'll be speaking to

:01:20. > :01:22.Dr Eluned Hughes of the charity First Katharine Da

:01:23. > :01:26.Costa has this report. All women aged between 50

:01:27. > :01:29.and 70 are invited for breast If any abnormalities are identified,

:01:30. > :01:35.they're called back for more tests. But in June

:01:36. > :01:38.a serious incident investigation was launched in Oxfordshire after five

:01:39. > :01:42.women who'd been given the all clear by the same doctor then went onto

:01:43. > :01:46.develop breast cancer. The concern that we have is that

:01:47. > :01:49.some tests were not carried out that might have been able to be at that

:01:50. > :01:53.time, and if they had been carried out, might

:01:54. > :01:57.have led to an earlier diagnosis. A review looked back at follow`up

:01:58. > :02:02.assessments between 2011 and 2014. more than 600 women were tested,

:02:03. > :02:06.the majority of whom were found to But further checks are being

:02:07. > :02:11.arranged for 30 women who'd Victoria Lyall from Sutton Courtney

:02:12. > :02:18.was diagnosed with breast cancer two She knows only too well the anxiety

:02:19. > :02:25.of waiting for test results. Every time your mind is free to

:02:26. > :02:30.think about anything else other than work or driving on whatever you're

:02:31. > :02:34.doing, any time your mind is free, you think about cancer and what will

:02:35. > :02:38.I do if it is and what treatment They might be doing

:02:39. > :02:41.that unnecessarily. The women will be offered

:02:42. > :02:43.appointments next week. The Trust expects that for

:02:44. > :02:56.the majority of these women there'll We are extremely sorry for the

:02:57. > :03:01.distress that we know when announcements like this will cause,

:03:02. > :03:04.but we are very confident that the service is safe.

:03:05. > :03:06.The Trust says a recall like this is unusual.

:03:07. > :03:08.As a precaution, Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust is also reviewing

:03:09. > :03:11.60 of its cases dating back to 2005 ` when the doctor at the centre

:03:12. > :03:16.No date's been set for when the investigation will report back,

:03:17. > :03:25.but the doctor has stopped carrying out assessments in the meantime.

:03:26. > :03:27.Earlier, I spoke to Dr Eluned Hughes of the charity

:03:28. > :03:36.It is obviously very worrying that the situation has occurred, and it

:03:37. > :03:39.is concerning for those 30 women who have been recalled for further

:03:40. > :03:43.tests, however, we are reassured to hear that the situation is being

:03:44. > :03:46.investigated and the women are being offered all

:03:47. > :03:54.How reliable are breast screening techniques in picking up cancer?

:03:55. > :03:56.The breast screening programme is based

:03:57. > :03:59.on the best available evidence and we know that the three yearly screen

:04:00. > :04:05.is the best method for detecting cancer early for the UK population.

:04:06. > :04:08.How possible is it the women developed cancer after

:04:09. > :04:17.We do know there are downsides to the screening, and sometimes

:04:18. > :04:20.cancer can be missed because it doesn't appear on the x`ray.

:04:21. > :04:25.Sometimes, women can develop breast cancer in that three year period.

:04:26. > :04:27.That is why it is really important that for women,

:04:28. > :04:30.even if they are attending breast screening, they still do remain

:04:31. > :04:34.breast aware and we advise women to touch, look and check for any

:04:35. > :04:39.unusual signs and go to their GP if they find anything unusual.

:04:40. > :04:43.A high percentage of cancers are picked up by checking themselves?

:04:44. > :04:46.Yes, that is right, and being breast aware and attending regular

:04:47. > :04:50.screening is very important so that if breast cancer does develop, it is

:04:51. > :04:56.The trust says it wants to be open and transparent

:04:57. > :04:59.and that is why it has come forward with the story, it will inevitably

:05:00. > :05:03.make someone anxious, how important is it that women are

:05:04. > :05:07.not put off attending mammograms or putting faith in mammograms?

:05:08. > :05:10.Breast screening is reliable and it does save lives,

:05:11. > :05:14.that is why we do recommend that women go, but it is important that

:05:15. > :05:16.they have the information about the risks and benefits

:05:17. > :05:21.This is an isolated incident and most women can be reassured

:05:22. > :05:32.A deal has been reached to take rubbish away from a fire that's been

:05:33. > :05:34.burning for three weeks at a recycling centre in Swindon.

:05:35. > :05:38.Attempts to extinguish the fire at Averies Recycling have failed `

:05:39. > :05:41.and fire crews say they need more room to operate.

:05:42. > :05:44.Swindon Borough Council's announced some of the waste will be moved once

:05:45. > :05:50.The number of young people taking up apprenticeships

:05:51. > :05:53.in Oxfordshire is up this year, bucking the national trend.

:05:54. > :05:56.And as thousands of teenagers received their A`Level results this

:05:57. > :06:00.morning, the county's first pop up apprentice shop opened in Abingdon.

:06:01. > :06:03.Managers are encouraging young people to consider apprenticeships

:06:04. > :06:13.Joy and relief for these students at Banbury Academy this morning.

:06:14. > :06:18.Straight As, three As, which is like crazy.

:06:19. > :06:26.An A`star in psychology and A`star in English and a B in philosophy.

:06:27. > :06:37.I got an A=star in English Lit, an A in English Language and a B

:06:38. > :06:39.The school had their best results to date.

:06:40. > :06:45.It's not all students that came in with high GCSE profiles

:06:46. > :06:52.Some of the students today that got an A`star or an A came to us

:06:53. > :06:57.Around 3,000 students got their results in Oxfordshire alone.

:06:58. > :07:01.There are more university places available than ever before,

:07:02. > :07:04.so people are more likely to get a place even if they haven't quite

:07:05. > :07:10.There are other options available apart from universities.

:07:11. > :07:13.Here in Abingdon, a pop`up apprentice shop.

:07:14. > :07:16.Apprenticeships can now offer equivalent training to

:07:17. > :07:23.There is a steady increase in people taking apprenticeships and

:07:24. > :07:27.that is going against the national trend, which is significant in

:07:28. > :07:30.a county like Oxfordshire which is very heavily dominated by full`time

:07:31. > :07:35.To see a shift towards apprenticeships and work`based

:07:36. > :07:40.Back in Banbury, the results are sinking in.

:07:41. > :07:43.Nationally, the pass rate might be down, but for the students, their

:07:44. > :07:52.There were delays on one of Oxford's busiest roads this afternoon

:07:53. > :07:58.14 homes were left without water after the problems

:07:59. > :08:02.The damage was repaired more quickly than expected,

:08:03. > :08:05.water has now been restored to all the homes and all traffic

:08:06. > :08:09.Thames Water are still investigating the cause of the leak.

:08:10. > :08:12.Campaigners have organised a meeting in Thame tonight against

:08:13. > :08:15.plans to build dozens of homes on fields near the town centre.

:08:16. > :08:19.Around 2,000 people have signed a petition to protect The Elms area

:08:20. > :08:24.The site was earmarked for construction in the town's

:08:25. > :08:26.neighbourhood plan, which identifies land that could be built on.

:08:27. > :08:28.Campaigners say residents are against the development even

:08:29. > :08:33.though most voted in favour of the neighbourhood plan last year.

:08:34. > :08:36.What we have found out is that most of the residents didn't quite

:08:37. > :08:38.actually understand what the consequences of this were, and now

:08:39. > :08:42.that we have marketed this to them and they now understand what is

:08:43. > :08:45.happening here, they realise that it is not what they want and they are

:08:46. > :08:49.now revolting against it and there is a lot of people saying that they

:08:50. > :09:10.People in Wiltshire are being asked if there should be restrictions on

:09:11. > :09:15.when people with free travel can use the buses. There are suggestions of

:09:16. > :09:16.keeping it until after 9am, which could end up saving millions of

:09:17. > :09:20.pounds per year. Pet owners

:09:21. > :09:22.and vets say fleas have become Mild winters and damp summers are

:09:23. > :09:26.thought to have caused the increase. Also vets say more animal owners are

:09:27. > :09:29.buying treatment products online, Just the thought of them is enough

:09:30. > :09:34.to make you want to scratch. And in Oxfordshire, pet owners

:09:35. > :09:36.are feeling increasingly itchy. Certainly, it has been

:09:37. > :09:39.a busy year on the flea front. Fleas are now an all year round

:09:40. > :09:42.problem, so we do see them through at whatever time of year it is,

:09:43. > :09:46.and this year with the warm summer, there's been a huge extra

:09:47. > :09:53.environmental burden from fleas. Treasure here is flea`free

:09:54. > :09:57.and it's largely thanks to her It is difficult to try to get rid

:09:58. > :10:02.of them all. I found that the flea bombs

:10:03. > :10:06.in carpets, it was really expensive It was just a big learning curve

:10:07. > :10:12.and it made me more vigilant. Experts at the Pest Control

:10:13. > :10:14.Association say flea eggs, which are tiny white flecks and can

:10:15. > :10:19.look like dry skin on an animal, can live in carpets for

:10:20. > :10:24.up to three years, only hatching So, if you go into a property that's

:10:25. > :10:29.been unoccupied, those flea cocoons could be set off again by the carbon

:10:30. > :10:37.dioxide in people's breath. The advice then is to seek

:10:38. > :10:39.veterinary advice and treat the site of infestations,

:10:40. > :10:48.not just the animals. That's all from me for the moment.

:10:49. > :10:52.I'll have the headlines at 8:00. Now more of today's stories

:10:53. > :11:07.with Sally Taylor. More than 15 years after

:11:08. > :11:10.a Sussex man was unlawfully killed outside a nightclub in Brighton, his

:11:11. > :11:13.brother has met the Police and Crime Commissioner for the county to seek

:11:14. > :11:18.her help in finally getting justice. Jay Abatan died from serious head

:11:19. > :11:21.injuries when he fell after being punched while waiting for a taxi but

:11:22. > :11:26.or no one has ever been prosecuted. But the person, or people,

:11:27. > :11:34.who punched Jay Abatan have not The 42`year`old tax specialist

:11:35. > :11:41.from Eastbourne died outside of the Ocean Rooms nightclub

:11:42. > :11:43.in Brighton after he fell to Jay's brother asks,

:11:44. > :11:49.how long does a victim's family have I made Jay a commitment, a promise

:11:50. > :11:56.on his deathbed that I was going to get justice for him, I was going

:11:57. > :12:00.to try and get justice for him. And I've made the decision that we

:12:01. > :12:02.need to push forward now and we should not let Sussex Police

:12:03. > :12:05.hold us back any longer Two men were charged with

:12:06. > :12:13.Mr Abatan's manslaughter but the case was dropped because

:12:14. > :12:17.of a lack of evidence. One of those men, Graham Curtis,

:12:18. > :12:21.committed suicide in 2003. Three Sussex police detectives

:12:22. > :12:23.involved in the original investigation were disciplined

:12:24. > :12:27.and their units work described as a I think in cases such as this it is

:12:28. > :12:36.important that as much awareness is raised about the case and as many

:12:37. > :12:39.people as possible are aware of it and it is put out in the public

:12:40. > :12:42.domain because the facts around it, and the fact that it has been

:12:43. > :12:45.subject to so many investigations due to internal flaws, mean that the

:12:46. > :12:50.family needs to be given justice. I think that will have to be new

:12:51. > :12:52.and compelling evidence which is credible and very strong to

:12:53. > :12:56.start any fresh proceedings against anybody and of course anyone who is

:12:57. > :12:58.accused, who has already been acquitted, can obviously say a jury

:12:59. > :13:04.has already found me not guilty. Sussex Police say they regret that

:13:05. > :13:06.no one has been convicted of the killing

:13:07. > :13:09.but they remain a committed to They say they have accepted that and

:13:10. > :13:14.have apologised for the mistakes made in the original investigation,

:13:15. > :13:16.but that investigative practices A Hampshire landowner says new

:13:17. > :13:32.European rules could put an end to two hundred years of growing

:13:33. > :13:34.watercress on his small farm. The Environment Agency has told him

:13:35. > :13:38.to pay for licences and other The owner used to pay ?36 a year `

:13:39. > :13:50.he would now have to pay ?1600 It is a watercress farm but this

:13:51. > :13:56.year there will be no watercress. None has been planted because

:13:57. > :13:59.of the cost of complying with Then there is unknown cost

:14:00. > :14:10.of building a settlement pond, instead of the water going straight

:14:11. > :14:13.into the area at the bottom of the watercress beds,

:14:14. > :14:17.it will go via the settlement pond. Landowner Charles thinks that

:14:18. > :14:23.the settlement pond would cost The farmer here used to only pay ?35

:14:24. > :14:30.to ?40 to the environment agency to The new charges are due to new EU

:14:31. > :14:36.rules which are meant to manage the But Charles does not think

:14:37. > :14:40.those rules are being They have said

:14:41. > :14:50.the river should be kept free of discharge is from watercress

:14:51. > :14:54.beds because of phosphates. I agree,

:14:55. > :14:59.but we do not use phosphates. I don't really want to go into

:15:00. > :15:06.business as a deliberate lossmaker. Big commercial growers

:15:07. > :15:11.like Vitacress have accepted the need to limit pollution

:15:12. > :15:13.and the subsequent cost. We asked the Environment Agency

:15:14. > :15:16.why a small farm with no chemicals They would not comment

:15:17. > :15:22.on a specific situation. They did say that in general they

:15:23. > :15:25.are working with watercress farms Charles is now trying to secure

:15:26. > :15:31.a meeting with the Environment Agency to see

:15:32. > :15:46.if his farm can get an exemption. Onto sport and we dip into

:15:47. > :15:49.the world of non league football tonight for a landmark moment in the

:15:50. > :15:52.history of Eastleigh football club. Tony has been to the

:15:53. > :15:55.Silverlake Stadium for tonight's roundup and sent us

:15:56. > :16:06.this report a short time ago. It is an absolutely massive night

:16:07. > :16:14.for everybody connected with this football club. It will be hosting

:16:15. > :16:29.its first ever Premier game. It started life with a 3`0 win. It is

:16:30. > :16:33.taking on Hampshire rivals. This stand was bought in from Exeter

:16:34. > :16:37.Rugby club. The numbers will be smiling as they come in through the

:16:38. > :16:47.terraces at this season. `` numbers will be swelling. A big night for

:16:48. > :16:54.the manager and chairman. I think for the town it is amazing. It is a

:16:55. > :17:00.first for as. We have got the TV cameras here as well so it is every

:17:01. > :17:06.fan's dream tonight so we have to make the most of it. Does that bring

:17:07. > :17:10.you a windfall? It gets you about ?7,000 are not a huge amount of

:17:11. > :17:15.money but what it does is raise the profile of the club and that is far

:17:16. > :17:19.more important so I think the money is obviously helpful but the biggest

:17:20. > :17:24.thing and the biggest challenge we have is to raise the profile of the

:17:25. > :17:29.club so it is ideal. A big step up this year. The long`term goal is to

:17:30. > :17:36.keep on rising? Absolutely. I think we are in football to be successful

:17:37. > :17:41.as same as you are in any business so very simply we have just got to

:17:42. > :17:53.keep improving year or New Year and can we get out of this league at

:17:54. > :18:00.some point, we hope so. `` improving year on year. We had a tough game on

:18:01. > :18:08.Saturday. Tonight will be tougher. We have got the attention, we have

:18:09. > :18:11.got yourselves here, I bet you cannot even say the last time you

:18:12. > :18:25.were here. We have that and we have to make sure we don't get invaded.

:18:26. > :18:36.One gay men. A big change. `` one day in. We had a lot of

:18:37. > :18:42.conversations. If we were entering into this league with players who

:18:43. > :18:47.had not played at this level before it would be different. That is why

:18:48. > :18:55.we feel we are in a position to compete rather than just make the

:18:56. > :19:10.numbers up. Anticipation builds here. Other football news: A new

:19:11. > :19:19.player has signed for Southampton. He has agreed a four`year contract.

:19:20. > :19:34.He was targeted as a TA addition to the squad. `` 80 addition. This

:19:35. > :19:41.player has signed a three`year contract. He scored 19 goals after

:19:42. > :19:55.signing in 2011. Let's headed to Z?rich. Silver in the 10,000 metres

:19:56. > :20:07.behind Mo Farah. He charged in behind Mo Farah. It is years of hard

:20:08. > :20:13.dedication. I cannot say I do not love it. It is a great job to have.

:20:14. > :20:16.You got to get up on those cold January mornings when it is raining

:20:17. > :20:22.you've got to go and do your session you've got to go and do your session

:20:23. > :20:27.or your brand and it a lot of motivation to do that stay in and

:20:28. > :20:34.stay out and it sounds easy but it pays off and it is absolutely

:20:35. > :20:52.brilliant. Great performance. The first boat is home. It crossed the

:20:53. > :21:02.line just after 1240. Cricket News. Hampshire were beaten in Essex.

:21:03. > :21:07.Their hopes of progression are over. The big new season in the Premier

:21:08. > :21:12.League. The FA Cup will be meeting the man who is the youngest manager

:21:13. > :21:18.ever to lead a team in the competition.

:21:19. > :21:21.And since Tony sent us that report, Southampton have added to

:21:22. > :21:24.the signing of Shane Long by completing the transfer of

:21:25. > :21:29.Florin Gardos, a Romanian central defender from Steau Bucharest.

:21:30. > :21:56.On to the weather. Tomorrow is a better day than today. We saw

:21:57. > :22:06.torrential downpours today. These are some photographs which have been

:22:07. > :22:12.sent to us. The rain came down this afternoon. Lightening in the

:22:13. > :22:16.forecast. Thunderstorms will ease through the course of this evening

:22:17. > :22:23.and once they do, with the clearing skies and light winds there is the

:22:42. > :22:48.the risk of thunder. A better day than today. A high of 20 Celsius.

:22:49. > :22:51.The winds are now coming in from the north`west have a slightly fresher

:22:52. > :22:55.feel as we head towards the weekend. Tomorrow night there will be a few

:22:56. > :22:59.showers continuing but they will gradually ease and under clearing

:23:00. > :23:03.skies once again light wind and the risk of missed all four patches.

:23:04. > :23:08.Temperatures once again down to 11 degrees or 12 degrees in towns and

:23:09. > :23:11.cities. It will be a dry such to the weekend and Saturday is looking like

:23:12. > :23:18.a fairly pleasant day to a brief ridge of high pressure with as to

:23:19. > :23:22.the course of the day. On Sunday we are expecting this cold front to be

:23:28. > :23:35.feels like the pressure `` slightly fresher. Eyes of 15 degrees or 17
