:01:11. > :01:14.the city centre in February ` The four people arrested ard being

:01:15. > :01:21.questioned in Northern Irel`nd. Jeremy, what more do we know

:01:22. > :01:27.about those four people? Police in Northern Ireland have

:01:28. > :01:30.confirmed that two men, aged 35 and 46, and two womdn,

:01:31. > :01:37.aged 21 and 44, were arrestdd They're names haven't been released

:01:38. > :01:42.or any other details about them We do know they're being qudstioned

:01:48. > :01:50.officers from the They're investigating

:01:51. > :01:56.whether the four suspects m`y be When the Armed Forces careers office

:01:57. > :02:03.in Oxford was targeted in Fdbruary this year, houses were evactated,

:02:04. > :02:07.shops closed and streets cldared. St Giles was cordoned off c`using

:02:12. > :02:14.a number of other addresses across the United Kingdom, hncluding

:02:15. > :02:18.an armed forces centre in Rdading. All the devices were defused

:02:19. > :02:22.by bomb disposal experts. At the time a government spokesman

:02:23. > :02:27.said "Suspect packages have been identified as containing sm`ll,

:02:28. > :02:31.crude, but potentially viable devices bearing the hallmarks of

:02:32. > :02:37.Northern Ireland`related terrorism. We don't know how long this

:02:38. > :02:41.investigation will take or if the four people arrested today

:02:42. > :02:43.will be charged. But for suspected terrorism cases

:02:44. > :02:47.the police can hold suspects for longer than in other cases,

:02:48. > :02:51.possibly up to two weeks. If they are charged

:02:52. > :02:54.a court appearance will be set, it's likely the case would be heard

:02:55. > :03:00.in Northern Ireland. A mother's spoken of her anger after

:03:01. > :03:04.the man who killed her teen`ge son in a car crash near Thame avoided

:03:05. > :03:08.being sent back to prison today Sam Edwards was jailed

:03:09. > :03:12.for five years in 2010 for causing But earlier this year he was caught

:03:13. > :03:16.behind the wheel ` Sam Edwards leaving court today

:03:17. > :03:24.guilty but unapologetic. I haven?t breach a family?s licence,

:03:25. > :03:27.I?ve breached my licence. There?s nothing to say to

:03:28. > :03:33.the family, is there? In 2010, the 30 year old from Marsh

:03:34. > :03:37.near Aylesbury, was sentencdd to five years for causing the death

:03:38. > :03:42.of 18 year old Greg Stiles. But by law he was only requhred to

:03:43. > :03:45.serve half that term The former racing driver trhed to

:03:46. > :03:52.overtake a car on this road between Princes Risborough and Thamd,

:03:53. > :03:54.putting himself directly in the Greg lost control,

:03:55. > :04:00.hitting another car. He died instantly and his ghrlfriend

:04:01. > :04:04.and passenger, Abigail Dowdx, Sam Edwards was also banned

:04:05. > :04:10.from driving for eight years. Despite that he was caught

:04:11. > :04:14.behind the wheel on the A41 Something which came as no

:04:15. > :04:20.surprise to Greg Stiles? falily He?s proved that he can?t lhve

:04:21. > :04:24.by the terms of his licence. If that?s the case, why did they not

:04:25. > :04:28.insist on a recall to prison today? She also believes people should

:04:29. > :04:33.have to serve their full sentence. The whole two

:04:34. > :04:36.and a half years out of fivd, on licence for two and a half xears,

:04:37. > :04:40.actually is meaningless, totally and utterly meaningless, if you end up

:04:41. > :04:44.with a result like we?ve got today. Sam Edwards was ordered to do 1 0

:04:45. > :04:50.hours of community service He'll remain on licence

:04:51. > :05:00.until next year. A coroner has ruled that

:05:01. > :05:03.the death of a robber who w`s held down by several people in Oxford

:05:04. > :05:05.was misadventure. Clint Townsend was attempting to

:05:06. > :05:08.rob a jewellery shop in the His family believe the restraint `

:05:09. > :05:14.where several people sat on him ` But an inquest heard that hd had

:05:15. > :05:17.an underlying heart condition The coroner said

:05:18. > :05:22.the people who restrained hhm did A private rubbish collection firm

:05:23. > :05:28.may be brought in to collect rubbish at blocks of flats in Oxford

:05:29. > :05:32.if residents don't recycle lore The City Council is threatening to

:05:33. > :05:35.leave bins of waste behind if people throw away substantially

:05:36. > :05:38.more than they recycle. The council wants half

:05:39. > :05:41.the city's domestic waste to be recycled as our Political Rdporter

:05:42. > :05:55.Helen Catt explains. Its plan is simple ` for evdry bin

:05:56. > :06:02.of recycling a block creates it Anything extra will have to be

:06:03. > :06:10.taken to the tip by private firms. For this block in North Oxford,

:06:11. > :06:13.it?s estimated that would cost This will not affect landlords,

:06:14. > :06:20.but tenants, and ultimately private Effectively, everyone

:06:21. > :06:30.in the block will have to p`y for The council says it has givdn block

:06:31. > :06:36.owners more than a year to hmprove rates and it?s helped to edtcate

:06:37. > :06:39.tenants although with a quarter of the city's population moving

:06:40. > :06:43.ever year, that's an ongoing job. We don?t want to see anybodx

:06:44. > :06:46.bringing in private collectors of rubbish ?

:06:47. > :06:49.the council does that very well Yes,

:06:50. > :06:55.we do all pay for it ? if wd don?t recycle it, we pay more in landfill

:06:56. > :07:01.charges, it goes onto the council tax, so it?s cheaper and better

:07:02. > :07:09.for the environment to recycle. And it?s not just Oxford trxing to

:07:10. > :07:12.get us to recycle as much as we throw away ? the EU h`s set

:07:13. > :07:16.a target for half of all waste to There's been a sharp rise

:07:17. > :07:42.in the number of prostitutes known They helped cause traffic collisions

:07:47. > :07:47.were convicted of conspiracx to convicted fraud and to drivd

:07:48. > :07:51.dangerously. Police in Oxford say there's been

:07:52. > :07:53.a five percent drop in anti`social behaviour

:07:54. > :07:55.in the city in the last year. The most significant reducthons

:07:56. > :07:58.were in the Barton and Risinghurst Across the city there were

:08:34. > :08:35.from Abingdon was diagnosed with He and his older sister havd been

:08:36. > :08:41.attracting a crowd in Oxford ` Possibly the youngest buskers

:08:42. > :08:48.in Oxfordshire. Ace

:08:49. > :08:52.and his sister Sky are planning on They're hoping to raise ?500 each

:08:53. > :08:56.for the charities which looked I was only three at the timd and I

:08:57. > :09:04.didn't really know what was happening, so it just felt

:09:05. > :09:12.a bit different, a bit dram`tic He had the illness for thred years `

:09:13. > :09:15.which left his family devastated. When one of the most preciots things

:09:16. > :09:19.in your world is told they have a life`threatening condition,

:09:20. > :09:23.it's just horrific. And now he wants to give solething

:09:24. > :09:25.back ` These charities are really

:09:26. > :09:31.close to my heart because they Without them he wouldn't

:09:32. > :09:37.be next to me today. The duo intends to do more

:09:38. > :09:39.busking before going back The goals from last night's matches

:09:40. > :09:49.involving Oxford, Swindon and the MK A long distance journey for charity

:09:50. > :10:07.for a former Saints footballer. GCSE results are out tomorrow

:10:08. > :10:09.and nowhere are they more kdenly anticipated than on the Isld

:10:10. > :10:13.of Wight. Last summer the support for schools

:10:14. > :10:16.was considered to be so poor that the government told Hampshire County

:10:17. > :10:26.Council to step in and take over The number of students gainhng five

:10:27. > :10:34.good GCSEs, including English That compared to

:10:35. > :10:37.a national average of 59.2%. It put the Island fourth from bottom

:10:38. > :10:40.in the national league tabld. Ofsted says improvements have now

:10:41. > :10:43.been made but in the first of two special reports,

:10:44. > :10:45.Briony Leyland looks back at why The gulf between education standards

:10:46. > :10:53.on the Isle of Wight compardd to the In 2008 the council came up with

:10:54. > :10:58.the controversial solution to move from three tiers of schooling `

:10:59. > :11:03.primary, middle and high ` to two, Opponents argued existing schools

:11:04. > :11:11.should be improved instead. I think it has damaged a nulber

:11:12. > :11:15.of generations very badly. If I was a parent of

:11:16. > :11:20.a child who had failed to gdt good GCSEs when I thought they should

:11:21. > :11:25.have got GCSEs, and I know lots of parents who think that, I would be

:11:26. > :11:31.very upset about the whole thing. The former council leader D`vid Pugh

:11:32. > :11:34.stands by the move to a two tier sxstem,

:11:35. > :11:37.arguing it ended years of stagnation Whatever the merits of reorganising

:11:38. > :11:41.schools, when the council's education services were inspected

:11:42. > :11:45.last summer more change restlted. Last June, with four of the island's

:11:46. > :11:50.six secondary schools deemed to be inadequate or failing and whth the

:11:51. > :11:53.council support for improving the schools condemned as ineffective by

:11:54. > :11:58.Ofsted, the Department for Dducation They called for reinforcements

:11:59. > :12:06.from the mainland, asking Hampshire County Council to

:12:07. > :12:08.take over education services A report by Hampshire Countx Council

:12:09. > :12:15.concluded a combination of factors had led to poor standards, hncluding

:12:16. > :12:22.issues around as aspirations and had led to poor standards, hncluding

:12:23. > :12:24.issues around aspirations and expectations, problems with school

:12:25. > :12:27.leadership, and an unusuallx static teaching force with a lack

:12:28. > :12:31.of professional development. A plan for improvement was set in

:12:32. > :12:34.motion and progress has been made. Aspiration is at the heart

:12:35. > :12:37.of the island's first free school. Directly funded by government,

:12:38. > :12:39.it is the vision of parents The parents wanted a smaller,

:12:40. > :12:44.simpler school, We are naturally looking out

:12:45. > :12:53.for them and trying to carvd a way and an education and

:12:54. > :12:56.a system for them that gives them The future of our children hs

:12:57. > :13:02.in our own hands. I think things will need to change

:13:03. > :13:05.and improve and we need to get The headmaster hopes the frde school

:13:06. > :13:12.will help to tackle some of the underlying problems behind

:13:13. > :13:15.low achievement on the island. Down here in the South of the Isle

:13:16. > :13:20.of Wight there is quite a lot There are a lot

:13:21. > :13:31.of free school meals students, I think South Wight is about 30 ,

:13:32. > :13:35.much higher than the island average, A lack of aspiration can happen

:13:36. > :13:39.in an island in a community setting I think it is easier to havd

:13:40. > :13:44.a lack of aspiration than pdrhaps in other areas,

:13:45. > :13:46.and it is about challenging that. The school believes even pupils who

:13:47. > :13:49.cannot get places here will benefit. In a competitive market, if someone

:13:50. > :13:52.sets a standard, everyone else has Something we talked a lot to

:13:53. > :13:56.the Department for Education about is we will set up an

:13:57. > :13:59.outstanding and very strong school. Competitors then have to rahse their

:14:00. > :14:03.game and it can impact all schools. On tomorrow's programme we will be

:14:04. > :14:06.looking at what has already been done to make improvements

:14:07. > :14:09.and finding out those all`ilportant Police say they will be checking

:14:10. > :14:20.so`called "legal highs" seized from Festival`goers in Readhng this

:14:21. > :14:24.weekend for signs of illegal drugs. The substances,

:14:25. > :14:26.which include chemicals intdnded as plant food and laughing gas, are

:14:27. > :14:31.banned from the event. Anyone arrested carrying thdm could

:14:32. > :14:35.face problems with the authorities who for the first

:14:36. > :14:38.time are using sophisticated equipment to check they've not been

:14:39. > :14:53.mixed with outlawed drugs. Festivalgoers have been arrhving in

:14:54. > :14:58.Reading all day. Police say youngsters, some on their fhrst trip

:14:59. > :15:02.away from home, prevent that Micah present rich pickings for crooks.

:15:03. > :15:06.But it is legal substances they may have brought with them officers will

:15:07. > :15:11.be watching out for as they mingle with the crowds. Everyday chemicals

:15:12. > :15:13.that can be used to try and get high.

:15:14. > :15:17.It is a condition of entry that you cannot bring any legal highs with

:15:18. > :15:20.you. It has been an issue bdfore. Security will be taking thel off

:15:21. > :15:25.people and asking them to strrender it. We also have some testing kit

:15:26. > :15:31.this year and we have to do some checking. The government tells us

:15:32. > :15:34.20% of legal highs may cont`in illegal substances.

:15:35. > :15:37.The event is a sell`out but a slip up getting old tickets in the post

:15:38. > :15:43.meant some had to collect them from the town's Theatre. The ticket

:15:44. > :15:47.agency says almost `` only ` small group were affected but among

:15:48. > :15:50.parents who had to take timd off work and travel from far afheld that

:15:51. > :15:54.did not go down well. It is inconvenient for us to come

:15:55. > :15:59.all the way to Reading. On the way back it will be rush`hour, who knows

:16:00. > :16:06.what will happen. There is the time and cost involved and I think they

:16:07. > :16:10.should reimburse me. No problem with tickets herd as more

:16:11. > :16:14.and more people arrived in Reading bone for the festival site.

:16:15. > :16:18.At least the crowds here on the move. After a freight train broke

:16:19. > :16:23.down in the station this morning, passengers were delayed at `rriving

:16:24. > :16:24.here in Reading for up to two hours. Not what people want on thehr way to

:16:25. > :16:32.the festival. A special World War One BBC roadshow

:16:33. > :16:34.arrived in Weymouth Pavilion today. There were hands`on activithes,

:16:35. > :16:37.performances and interactivd sessions to show what living in

:16:38. > :16:41.wartime was like for the soldiers who went off to fight but also for

:16:42. > :16:47.the families who were left behind. Frankie Peck has more.

:16:48. > :16:49.Learning about the First World War in an Edwardian setting.

:16:50. > :16:52.Classroom cane and all were present at today's road show.

:16:53. > :16:56.I'm going to have words with your mother, you know!

:16:57. > :16:58.Away from the schoolmaster, staff from the Imperial War Museums

:16:59. > :17:01.were teaching a more up`to`date lesson, how people could discover

:17:02. > :17:06.what part their relatives h`d to play in the Great War.

:17:07. > :17:11.Dorset Regiment, the Royal Navy we are finding people who

:17:12. > :17:14.discovered that their grandfathers had brothers who also served.

:17:15. > :17:20.They are finding lots of details that perhaps thex knew

:17:21. > :17:24.All of the information on people's relatives will be kept

:17:25. > :17:28.These girls found out more about their great grandad.

:17:29. > :17:32.There were more colourful activities on offer, and Morse code pr`ctice

:17:33. > :17:36.for those all`important messages needing to get past enemy lhnes

:17:37. > :17:41.Because it was a fast`moving war, radio contact was essential

:17:42. > :17:47.and Morse is the most effichent way of sending radiocommunication.

:17:48. > :17:59.It was a good day for gener`tions to come together to remember.

:18:00. > :18:05.I think she was enjoying herself there! Let's move on to sport, Chris

:18:06. > :18:10.Temple is with us. We will start with football.

:18:11. > :18:14.It was a busy night last night, we have a tweet from a man who often

:18:15. > :18:19.sits there in his shorts. What a treat! If you are eating your

:18:20. > :18:24.dinner now, look away now. Last night, round three of football

:18:25. > :18:27.league matches, all of the site was Micro clubs were in action. There

:18:28. > :18:31.are all the key moments involved in your local teams.

:18:32. > :18:34.The Brighton manager registdred his maiden league success as his side

:18:35. > :18:39.scored their first Championship goals of the season at Leeds. Shall

:18:40. > :18:52.take error on loan from Livdrpool gave them then their opener.

:18:53. > :18:57.Bournemouth surrendered thehr 1 0% start to the season despite

:18:58. > :19:01.dominating against expending Nottingham Forest. After Matt

:19:02. > :19:09.Ritchie's free kick struck ` post, Callum Wilson gave the cherries the

:19:10. > :19:12.lead just short of the hour. Nottingham Forest's striker somehow

:19:13. > :19:17.find the net with this headdr and minutes later Matt Prior outjumped

:19:18. > :19:24.Adam Smith to consign Bourndmouth to defeat. It was a bad night for

:19:25. > :19:31.Reading who were also on thd end of a 2`1 defeat to Huddersfield. Harry

:19:32. > :19:38.Bunn doubled their lead before half`time. The Royals pulled a goal

:19:39. > :19:44.back through Simon Cox but ht was too little too late for Nigdl
