:01:10. > :02:28.by the smoke say individual claims could reach thousands of potnds

:02:29. > :02:32.Although the council have responsibility for public hdalth

:02:33. > :02:35.its The Environment Agency who are responsible for licensing Averies.

:02:36. > :02:38.We contacted both the EA and the waste facility but neither

:02:39. > :02:45.An investigation into the fhre, and whether Averies should be closed

:02:46. > :02:51.The Environment Agency has now issued a statement.

:02:52. > :02:53.It says the infrastructure at Averies isn't up to standard

:02:54. > :03:01.so it's placed an enforcement notice on thd site.

:03:02. > :03:03.That means Averies cannot accept more waste

:03:04. > :03:08.The agency is now investigating if any offences have been commhtted.

:03:09. > :03:10.A former Milton Keynes police officer has been jailed

:03:11. > :03:13.for 18 months for helping a gang try to smuggle drugs into the UK.

:03:14. > :03:16.54`year`old Martin McElvenn` accessed the

:03:43. > :03:45.murder weapon used to kill Patricia Goodband Christopher Symons was

:03:46. > :03:48.sentenced to life for killing the 76`year`old in 2012, but thd weapon

:03:49. > :03:50.and personal effects belonghng to her have never been tracdd.

:03:51. > :03:53.A fresh search at the property in Westcott has ended,

:03:54. > :03:59.It's emerged that the former mayor of Milton Keynes Subhan Shafiq gave

:04:00. > :04:01.character references for three alleged sex offenders

:04:02. > :04:04.He stood down after vouching for a convicted rapist,

:04:05. > :04:06.but has refused repeated repuests to speak to the BBC.

:04:07. > :04:09.Another of those he vouched for was accused of molesting a woman, but

:04:10. > :04:13.police didn't pursue charges and he continued working as a taxi driver.

:04:14. > :04:16.Researchers in Oxford have started testing a drug which

:04:17. > :04:20.A clinical trial, funded by the Government, is being carried

:04:21. > :04:24.It's hoped the drug, which is normally used to treat acne

:04:25. > :04:26.and bacterial infections, could help slow down the progression

:04:27. > :04:30.Adina Campbell has been hearing about the impact dementia c`n have

:04:31. > :04:38.Six years ago, Tony Thomas was diagnosed with dementia.

:04:39. > :04:43.Since then, him and his wifd Cyndy have moved house, to help hhm

:04:44. > :04:51.I don't think it's really affected me a great deal in that I h`ve lots

:04:52. > :04:54.of friends, go out, and I'm on my own with groups of

:04:55. > :04:58.people and so on, and the only issue is that I forget small unimportant

:04:59. > :05:11.But there could be new hope for people like Tony.

:05:12. > :05:14.A drug called Minocycline is being trialled in Oxford as part

:05:15. > :05:18.This centre at the Warnford Hospital is one of 27 across England

:05:19. > :05:20.This research centre looks at conditions like Parkinson's

:05:21. > :05:26.But could the work being done here about dementia hold thd key

:05:27. > :05:34.What we're doing is we're looking at an antibiotic called Minocycline,

:05:35. > :05:37.which is a cheap drug that's been known about for a long time,

:05:38. > :05:41.a cheap, safe drug, and it has the possibility that it might, `s an

:05:42. > :05:46.antiinflammatory, and as a drug that acts

:05:47. > :05:49.on the protein that's deposhted in Alzheimer's disease, that it might

:05:50. > :06:05.?13 million of government funding was ghven to

:06:06. > :06:11.NHS research centres like this one across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire,

:06:12. > :06:14.But Berkshire healthcare for dementia alone costs ?26 billion

:06:15. > :06:17.Anything they can do to find out more about it.

:06:18. > :06:19.Hopefully, if they find out more they can find

:06:20. > :06:23.It's nice to hear that people are spending time, money, and t`lents.

:06:24. > :06:25.Early results of this trial are expected hn 2 17.

:06:26. > :06:29.If the drug proves to be a success, more tests will need to be done

:06:30. > :06:39.before it can be offered as a treatment for dementia patients.

:06:40. > :06:42.People living in a street in Bicester have now been allowed back

:06:43. > :06:44.to their homes after controlled explosions were carried out on on

:06:45. > :06:47.A joint army and police investigation was

:06:48. > :06:49.launched after the discoverx in Buckingham Crescent yestdrday.

:06:50. > :06:52.Police say some of the items have been destroyed,

:06:53. > :06:55.others have been taken away ` and some are still at the house

:06:56. > :06:57.A man arrested at the property has been bahled

:06:58. > :07:03.Rail passengers travelling between Swindon and Bath had to be taken

:07:04. > :07:05.off their train last night `fter it became stuck in flood water.

:07:06. > :07:08.90 people had to be rescued from the First Great Western train

:07:09. > :07:14.In places the water reached up to a metre in depth within an hour

:07:15. > :07:17.The train ground to a halt `t around 1am, trapping the passengers

:07:18. > :07:30.on board for up to four hours before they were rescued.

:07:31. > :07:32.?6 million of work to fix the Whitchurch Bridge finally comes to

:07:33. > :07:35.It fully reopens for the first time since October

:07:36. > :07:52.This was the day people had waited for. And waited, and waited... Work

:07:53. > :07:55.had been due to become littdred by April, but then came the winter

:07:56. > :08:02.floods. Work stopped, and for almost a year, people `` businesses like

:08:03. > :08:07.this found themselves isolated from many customers on the opposhte side

:08:08. > :08:14.of the river. It was a disaster All this rain and floods, and btsiness

:08:15. > :08:17.goes down. Across the street, it was a similar story at this bushness. It

:08:18. > :08:21.has been quite difficult. The weather has been against thd bridge

:08:22. > :08:26.opening, and know that. We have been waiting a long time for this bridge

:08:27. > :08:29.to open, and let's just get it open and welcome new people back into the

:08:30. > :08:35.village. Let's just hope th`t they will continue to come. But `s the

:08:36. > :08:44.reopening due `` drew close, this unofficial chap made a bid to become

:08:45. > :08:49.the first vehicle to cross. Very, very inconvenient to say thd least,

:08:50. > :08:53.trying to get to the nearby shopping places that we wanted to go to to

:08:54. > :09:00.buy heavy things, you had to go round a long way, half an hour

:09:01. > :09:05.round. And so the hour came. The first car to cross, a 1902 vintage

:09:06. > :09:08.model. From the year and thd current bridge was first built. Aftdr all

:09:09. > :09:14.the problems, the owners cotld only hope the refurbished Bridge last as

:09:15. > :09:18.long again. It is very unustal for the river here to stay so hhgh for

:09:19. > :09:25.so long, but it was the planning permission, we had to do thd job in

:09:26. > :09:33.winter. There is... There is some talk about whether boat users should

:09:34. > :09:41.have priority over road you readers `` users. For the next few days the

:09:42. > :09:45.bridge will be toll`free. The prices will soon rise by at least 25% and

:09:46. > :09:48.possibly many times more to pay for this costly repair Richmond. ``

:09:49. > :09:53.refurbishment. More stories coming up with

:09:54. > :09:56.Tony Husband including reaction to the Scottish

:09:57. > :09:58.referendum result from Oxfordshire. Our Business

:09:59. > :10:50.Correspondent Alastair Fee reports. A patriotically and a proud British

:10:51. > :10:53.businessman who voted No. Why? It would have thrown up a lot of

:10:54. > :10:58.unknown challenges and that was the biggest problem. I am a lot more

:10:59. > :11:04.cautious and I think business people are cautious. Started by his

:11:05. > :11:09.grandfather in Glasgow in 1848, they provide bespoke furniture for

:11:10. > :11:23.hotels, restaurants and bars. Nobody has come back and said, nevdr mind,

:11:24. > :11:27.not independent. If it had been Yes, what would you have done? Wd would

:11:28. > :11:31.have had to deal with it. Wd would've had to make sure wd got

:11:32. > :11:37.what was right for the Scottish people and the Scottish economy and

:11:38. > :11:41.us as business people. For some disappointment, but for manx in

:11:42. > :11:45.business, relief at this decision. The pound is stronger and shares

:11:46. > :11:50.rose but any devolution deal for Scotland could still have an Mike

:11:51. > :11:55.impact. The Chambers of comlerce said that local businesses want more

:11:56. > :11:58.freedom from Westminster and more influence over how taxes ard spent.

:11:59. > :12:02.Our Political Editor Peter Henley joins me now.

:12:03. > :12:05.Details there of today's vote impacting on the South's economy.

:12:06. > :12:06.Could economic powers be devolved to the regions as part

:12:07. > :12:19.of any agreement? This idea of devolving power to

:12:20. > :12:22.England his support. The Prhme Minister is supporting it, the Welsh

:12:23. > :12:29.nationalists, Northern Irel`nd not so sure, but it is partly about

:12:30. > :12:34.dealing with the West Lothi`n question, it is partly fighting off

:12:35. > :12:39.some of those Conservative backbenchers saying that Scotland

:12:40. > :12:43.has been given too much. It is also a way for David Cameron to deal with

:12:44. > :12:50.opposition MPs north of the border. Leaders may have made a soldmn vow,

:12:51. > :12:55.how long will it last? The Prime Minister says he wants a balanced

:12:56. > :13:00.settlement. How do we defind that? It is about sharing the cakd

:13:01. > :13:03.equally. That is not straightforward. And the ovdr

:13:04. > :13:09.responsibility for services and how much money to pay for it. `` handing

:13:10. > :13:15.over. Leeds, Manchester, Shdffield, have been lobbying for northern

:13:16. > :13:19.cities to be given more. Thd counties are saying, there hs 2

:13:20. > :13:24.million people in English counties, it is not just about the cities We

:13:25. > :13:32.pay taxes, do we want to sed it going north? We were stunned by the

:13:33. > :13:37.turnout. 89%, 90%. Is that fervour going to be there in the general

:13:38. > :13:40.election? I think the rejection of Westminster dominance has echoes

:13:41. > :13:46.down here. Regularly with the rise of UKIP. Better Together, does that

:13:47. > :13:52.apply to our plans in Europd as well? There is a different tone

:13:53. > :13:57.around that debate. Is it the principle of separation or the

:13:58. > :14:07.particular circumstances in the north? Soon we may be looking

:14:08. > :14:10.further south towards Europd. They are meant to get more peopld

:14:11. > :14:22.shopping, business improvemdnt districts already exist in several

:14:23. > :14:29.towns. They can help with m`rketing and putting on festivals. Some

:14:30. > :14:36.traders object. There is only one butcher ldft here

:14:37. > :14:40.now. For a small independent, times are still tough and they have to

:14:41. > :14:45.find extra money for a schele to drum up more trade. Small btsinesses

:14:46. > :14:50.are stretched as it is. Ratds are very high and the rent is hhgh.

:14:51. > :14:58.Larger businesses are supported by the big firms. We are not. We are

:14:59. > :15:02.just trying to survive. His is one of over 500 businesses to rdceive a

:15:03. > :15:06.demand for the levy which starts at ?350 a year. Fewer than a qtarter

:15:07. > :15:13.voted for the business improvement district. It hopes to raise ?2

:15:14. > :15:19.million plans to make this city a more pleasant place to shop. The

:15:20. > :15:25.board will decide where to spend the cash. The cost of parking is a big

:15:26. > :15:32.issue in Salisbury. One car park has been free from 3pm but it is not

:15:33. > :15:35.used to this restaurant who voted against the proposals, saying he

:15:36. > :15:41.will see no benefit for somdthing that will cost him ?2500. Wd are

:15:42. > :15:46.going to refuse to pay. Whether we take it as far as the Europdan Court

:15:47. > :15:53.or not, I do not know. We fdel this is an Mike for tax being forced upon

:15:54. > :15:59.us. Give us a chance. Work with us, not against us and we will lake the

:16:00. > :16:03.city even more vibrant. It has started spending money. It has put

:16:04. > :16:07.the mag monitors around the city to find out how many people ard

:16:08. > :16:15.shopping here but it will nded to do more to convince its critics.

:16:16. > :16:25.It is a big weekend of sport coming up. The Football League havd said

:16:26. > :16:28.Yes to a football takeover. It is the end of an era.

:16:29. > :16:31.Sir John Madejski has sold his entire stake in Reading Football

:16:32. > :16:34.Club, ending his near quartdr of a century spell in charge of the club.

:16:35. > :16:37.In announcing the news tonight, Madejski has said the futurd

:16:38. > :16:39.of Reading Football Club has been resolved, 12 months after

:16:40. > :16:43.The Royals issued a statement late this afternoon in which thex

:16:44. > :16:46.confirmed that their new partnership with a Thai consortium led by

:16:47. > :16:49.Khunying Sasima had been given the green light by the Football League.

:16:50. > :16:52.Four other Thai investors have joined the board.

:16:53. > :16:54.The Royals have needed new investment after Russian owner Anton

:16:55. > :17:06.There's plenty more on BBC Berkshire.

:17:07. > :17:08.In other football news, Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc

:17:09. > :17:09.has today joined Bournemouth on loan until January.

:17:10. > :17:12.He goes straight into the Cherries squad against Watford tomorrow.

:17:13. > :17:15.Meanwhile, Saints will look to make it three league wins in a row when

:17:16. > :17:19.In the Championship, Cherrids are at Watford, as just mentiondd,

:17:20. > :17:22.Brighton take on Blackpool in the battle of the seasidd towns

:17:23. > :17:25.and Reading make the journex north to Sheffield Wednesday.

:17:26. > :17:27.In League One, MK Dons welcome bottom of the table Crewe, while

:17:28. > :17:33.In League Two, Oxford will look to build on their

:17:34. > :17:36.midweek win when Stevenage visit the Kassam, and Portsmouth should

:17:37. > :17:41.have Ricky Holmes and Nicky Shorey back in contention against Wycombe.

:17:42. > :17:43.Dorset's Giles Scott contintes to dominate the Finn class

:17:44. > :17:46.at the Sailing World Championships in Santander.

:17:47. > :17:50.He holds a 20 point lead at the top with two more races to go.

:17:51. > :17:52.There was disappointment for Weymouth's Bryony Shaw,

:17:53. > :17:55.who missed out on a medal in the women's windsurfing finale.

:17:56. > :17:58.The 31`year old, who started the race in fourth,

:17:59. > :18:02.made a mistake at the halfw`y stage that forced her out of the running.

:18:03. > :18:05.Despite making mistakes and not having the board speed that I wanted

:18:06. > :18:15.in the racing, I gave myself a chance and unfortunately I blew it.

:18:16. > :18:20.Now, staying with sailing, teams from around the world are

:18:21. > :18:23.preparing to take part in a world record`breaking race this wdekend.

:18:24. > :18:26.The event, known as Bart's Bash has been organised in memorx

:18:27. > :18:29.of Sherborne's Andrew Simpson and the foundation set up in his name.

:18:30. > :18:32.Bart, as he was known to frhends, died while training

:18:33. > :18:35.for the America's Cup last xear but his legacy lives on.

:18:36. > :18:38.Bart was a father of two, a husband to Leah and a double

:18:39. > :18:44.Loved by all those that knew him, forgotten by nobody.

:18:45. > :18:46.16 months has passed since he was killed in

:18:47. > :18:51.His passion for sailing livds on through the

:18:52. > :18:58.It is a measure of the guy to see the amount of support there is

:18:59. > :19:02.Everybody coming together on a global scale says

:19:03. > :19:07.a lot about Andrew and doing something great for sailing to get

:19:08. > :19:14.This weekend sees an attempt to break a world record in his name.

:19:15. > :19:18.Boats from around the world taking to the water at the same tile for

:19:19. > :19:27.Within a 24 hour period every club has to formulate its own racecourse.

:19:28. > :19:29.It has to be over one kilometre long.

:19:30. > :19:34.We all have a rating, based on our boat, and the results

:19:35. > :19:37.will come together at the end and we get to see who has won.

:19:38. > :19:40.This weekend will be an opportunity for the sailhng

:19:41. > :19:49.community who Bart inspired so much to give something b`ck.

:19:50. > :20:01.Joining us is an Olympic sahlor You have helped to organise that event.

:20:02. > :20:07.How will it work? There are 65 countries, 750 clubs, the whole

:20:08. > :20:12.event has gone crazy and is a real testament to the feeling and the

:20:13. > :20:16.warmth in the sailing community for Bart. It kicks off pretty soon with

:20:17. > :20:30.the first race just past midnight in New Zealand. Some of his Amdricas

:20:31. > :20:34.Cup friends are kicking that off. We will be racing in Weymouth `nd in

:20:35. > :20:41.hundreds of clubs. What does it say about this man, Bart Simpson, that

:20:42. > :20:47.you are able to produce such an event? I knew him for 30 ye`rs and

:20:48. > :20:53.lived with him over to Mich`el Olympic campaigns, but everxone who

:20:54. > :20:57.knows him knows that he was the most generous and selfless person and he

:20:58. > :21:02.had so many friends because so many able recognise those qualithes. We

:21:03. > :21:08.are honoured for him. He wotld have liked this event. He would have

:21:09. > :21:14.loved the family element. There are so many people this is their first

:21:15. > :21:21.time sailing. I am sailing with his son. It is his first time. How is

:21:22. > :21:29.the sailing community moving on from what was such a shocking and tragic

:21:30. > :21:32.moment? One of those moments where those of us who were in contact with

:21:33. > :21:37.him remember where we were when we heard. Absolutely. Some of the

:21:38. > :21:43.people close to him will always remember the fond things, the things

:21:44. > :21:48.that he changed in my life `nd the way he made me change perspdctive.

:21:49. > :21:52.He was a man I always talk to about my problems. He was always there for

:21:53. > :22:01.all his friends. I remember those moments. We wish you the best of

:22:02. > :22:04.luck with the event on Sund`y. It is a fantastic initiative and we have

:22:05. > :22:13.enjoyed following it. We wish you the best of luck. I am sure Bart is

:22:14. > :22:21.looking down. Sheep, pigs and chocolate? That is

:22:22. > :22:29.the theme of the Royal Berkshire County show which takes place this

:22:30. > :22:37.weekend. What have you been doing? I have watched a pig, made sole

:22:38. > :22:42.chocolate and met some sheep. I am joined by an up`and`coming sheep

:22:43. > :22:51.farmer. We have one of our Welsh badger face lambs. We have `bout 30

:22:52. > :22:59.back home. What are you hophng for from the show? To win a rosdtte We

:23:00. > :23:07.have dodged the thunderstorls, but the pig had not.

:23:08. > :23:12.Tomorrow is the big opening. What is the thing you need to be dohng to

:23:13. > :23:29.get ready? The first thing hs we have to wash them. She has been in

:23:30. > :23:38.the trailer. She is a bit mtcky They work lopsided. These are the

:23:39. > :23:46.kinds of things you do not see, the behind`the`scenes. Eric is having a

:23:47. > :23:58.haircut. Can I have a go? No. He is far too valuable. I have lifted the

:23:59. > :24:07.fleece and taken off the loose edges, these fibres on the top. If

:24:08. > :24:10.livestock is not your thing, here at the University of Reading tdnt they

:24:11. > :24:16.have sweetness on the mind. You can find out how to make chocol`te from

:24:17. > :24:25.one of these cocoa pods. I have made a mess of that! We need to let that

:24:26. > :24:34.set. Fortunately, we made one earlier. It is all mine!

:24:35. > :24:39.That is where we are strongly disagreeing, because it is not all

:24:40. > :24:48.yours. I am sure that most obese am left for us. Do not forget ts ``

:24:49. > :25:00.there will still be some left for us. I will bring it back to the

:25:01. > :25:05.studio on Monday. We have h`d some heavy thunderstorms today.

:25:06. > :25:11.We saw variable amounts of cloud through the course of the d`y and

:25:12. > :25:15.that meant torrential downpours leading to localised flooding. The

:25:16. > :25:19.thunderstorms could continud for some. There is a Met Office weather
