:00:11. > :00:14.Hello and welcome to BBC Points West.
:00:14. > :00:17.In the headlines tonight: The huge project to electrify the
:00:17. > :00:22.London main line gets underway, but what will the disruption mean to
:00:22. > :00:27.travellers? Doctors and nurses are warned not to befriend patients on
:00:27. > :00:37.the internet after a Somerset nurse is struck off. Also tonight:
:00:37. > :00:41.
:00:41. > :00:46.The valuable Banksy whitewashed by the building's new owner. And I
:00:46. > :00:53.will be reporting from the River Thames in London as the Somerset
:00:53. > :00:56.Royal Marines reached the final lap of their charity row.
:00:56. > :00:59.Work has begun on the biggest improvements to the Great Western
:00:59. > :01:03.railway line since it was built by Brunel. It was announced today that
:01:03. > :01:06.billions of pounds will be spent over the next few years and will
:01:06. > :01:08.mean the main line to London gets electrified. Network Rail says the
:01:08. > :01:11.most disruptive work will be done overnight. Today politicians and
:01:11. > :01:19.senior rail executives gathered at Paddington station to celebrate the
:01:19. > :01:24.All was flowing smoothly at Paddington today and not just
:01:24. > :01:34.trains on the Great Western line. Platform 10 was crowded with rail
:01:34. > :01:35.
:01:35. > :01:40.officials, councillors, MPs and a secretary of state. This is a new
:01:40. > :01:45.age of rail in Britain. government have managed to find
:01:45. > :01:49.billions of pounds to fund seven years of improvements. The new
:01:49. > :01:53.trains will deliver passengers are more comfortable and faster
:01:53. > :01:59.journeys and Moorgreen and economic journeys. These are all things that
:01:59. > :02:09.we want to achieve in the Renaissance that we are going for
:02:09. > :02:11.
:02:11. > :02:14.a., -- going for. Most here today are regular rail users and know how
:02:14. > :02:18.bad things can be. Over the past decade the number of passengers
:02:18. > :02:20.using the line has leapt by 40 %. Peak time prices from Swindon to
:02:20. > :02:23.London are the highest in Europe but passengers still come.
:02:23. > :02:26.number of times I have stood on the way from Swindon to London I cannot
:02:26. > :02:28.count. It is a really unpleasant journey. Down the track from
:02:28. > :02:32.Paddington, work will begin within months. Bridges must be moved to
:02:32. > :02:35.make room for the electric wires which will stretch all the way to
:02:35. > :02:43.Bristol and Cardiff. They'll provide power to hundreds of new
:02:43. > :02:48.trains and carriages. We will have a massive improvement in the
:02:48. > :02:52.customer experience. We are seeing phenomenal growth. More and more
:02:52. > :02:57.people are travelling by train in this part of the world and we need
:02:57. > :03:02.to respond to that. The hope that is in five years it will be the
:03:02. > :03:06.most advanced railway in the world. For the many thousands who use this
:03:06. > :03:11.line daily there is just one question. How difficult will things
:03:11. > :03:17.get? Network Rail have tried to be reassuring. They have said that
:03:17. > :03:20.most of the work will try to be done at night.
:03:20. > :03:22.These were the scenes four years ago when passengers on the Bristol
:03:23. > :03:25.to London line started getting seriously angry. They wanted more
:03:25. > :03:30.carriages. They wanted more trains. They even organised a fares boycott.
:03:30. > :03:34.Today many of their demands have been answered. We are overjoyed
:03:34. > :03:40.with the new trains. We are overjoyed with new characters. It
:03:40. > :03:49.is just whether we can afford to go on them or not. But will passengers
:03:49. > :03:56.put up with the necessary disruption? We need the service.
:03:56. > :04:04.would rather go through a few years paying then have a continuously bad
:04:04. > :04:14.service so I in it is worth the investment. People want to know
:04:14. > :04:14.
:04:14. > :04:18.precisely what it will mean in practice. Network Rail was shy
:04:18. > :04:21.about saying how much disruption would have to be faced. There was a
:04:21. > :04:24.taste of what's to come last Christmas. Reading station was
:04:24. > :04:27.closed for four days. Trains had to go on an 80 mile diversion via
:04:27. > :04:30.Banbury, doubling journey times. That could happen again both this
:04:30. > :04:33.and next Christmas. By 2016, though, there will be four trains every
:04:33. > :04:36.hour between Bristol and London, instead of two. The journey time
:04:36. > :04:43.will be 22 minutes shorter. Passenger groups are pleased but
:04:43. > :04:48.say it's long overdue. The trains we have got in the South West are
:04:48. > :04:54.the oldest on the mainline network. The equipment is among the oldest
:04:54. > :04:58.equipment. We still run on a 1960s signalling technology. We need is
:04:58. > :05:03.very badly and it is good news. Were not the things passengers must
:05:03. > :05:08.be asking themselves is it they will be paying for these
:05:08. > :05:13.investments with higher train fares. Over the next few years, how much
:05:13. > :05:16.higher will prices go? The former ITV and BBC presenter
:05:16. > :05:19.Peter Rowell is to face trial accused of 18 sex offences

:05:35. > :05:38.Police in Bath are appealing for witnesses after a 14-year-old girl
:05:38. > :05:41.was sexually assaulted on her way home from school. The attack
:05:41. > :05:44.happened on Tuesday afternoon at around 4 o'clock on a track between
:05:44. > :05:47.Ringswell Gardens and the Kennet and Avon canal. The girl together

:07:12. > :07:16.The teachers came and just said that there was a fire. We looked up
:07:16. > :07:19.and there were clouds of smoke and we thought we'd better go. Parents
:07:19. > :07:22.were informed by text message that there had been a fire but everyone

:13:04. > :13:07.One of the oldest pictures by the street artist, Banksy, has been
:13:07. > :13:11.whitewashed from a wall in Bristol. For many years, the picture of the
:13:11. > :13:14.gorilla in a pink mask has been a famous sight on the brickwork of a
:13:14. > :13:19.building in Fishponds, but it seems the new owners were unaware they

:13:22. > :13:26.Underneath this wall in Fishponds Road lies one of Banksy's most
:13:26. > :13:30.famous pieces of work. The Masked Gorilla was one of his earlier

:13:45. > :13:51.daily lives. It has an iconic status and it is a cultural symbol.
:13:51. > :13:56.I think it is very sad. I am going to miss walking past the image that

:14:31. > :14:38.just saw it was a picture. I am beginning to see that the paint
:14:38. > :14:44.underneath is quite soluble. what's the verdict? There may be a
:14:44. > :14:51.Solent that we can test and find but it will be a slow process. We
:14:51. > :14:57.will have to break down the surface layer by layer. The original
:14:57. > :15:07.condition could be very bad. I would suggest that it is a bit of a
:15:07. > :15:11.complex job. This is a very sad. It was quite nice. It seems the best
:15:11. > :15:21.we can hope for now is that Banksy takes pity and gives this wall a
:15:21. > :15:24.
:15:24. > :15:34.fresh look and they'll promise It is time to call on Banksy. Let's
:15:34. > :15:40.
:15:40. > :15:44.hope he was watching. Today aircraft have been flying in
:15:44. > :15:48.Gloucestershire to get under way with preparations for the Air Show
:15:48. > :15:53.this weekend. Our reporter is there already. What are the highlights
:15:53. > :16:03.for you? There are so many to mention. We
:16:03. > :16:07.have seen so many planes coming in. Today there have been plenty of
:16:07. > :16:14.aircraft flying in. You can see some on the static display behind
:16:14. > :16:20.me. Where would this Institute be without the Red Arrows? They always
:16:20. > :16:28.put on a fantastic display. They had been giving the camera as a
:16:28. > :16:33.work out today. There will be a few test flights today. That got a few
:16:33. > :16:40.spotters are very excited. All of the military ones are on missions
:16:40. > :16:45.around the world. The B 52 is an aircraft that you see regularly.
:16:45. > :16:49.This was an air show that started back in 1971 in a small airfield
:16:49. > :16:56.and then it moved to Greenham Common and then came here to
:16:56. > :17:06.Gloucestershire. RAF Fairford came the new home of the Air tattoo in
:17:06. > :17:07.
:17:07. > :17:15.1985 after moving from green -- Greenham column. We managed to get
:17:15. > :17:19.the Russian military to come to the show here. They parked alongside an
:17:19. > :17:23.American B 52 bomber. They had the air crews come out and the Russians
:17:23. > :17:29.had their big hats and the Americans had slightly smaller hats
:17:29. > :17:34.and they talked about things and had a beer together. But the Air
:17:34. > :17:38.tattoo has not been without its drum up. This plane made a dramatic
:17:38. > :17:43.entrance when it came down suddenly. It was this crash that made
:17:43. > :17:53.headlines around the world. Both pilots ejected to safety and no one
:17:53. > :17:58.
:17:58. > :18:04.was injured. NT 1008 -- in the 2008 torrential rain -- brain landed a
:18:04. > :18:09.day before it the show was about to start. There were safety fears and
:18:09. > :18:15.the whole weekend was cancelled. was a big decision and it was
:18:15. > :18:24.affecting people's lives in one way or the other. It was a feeling of,
:18:24. > :18:33.what will happen next? Away from the drama is the aircraft. There is
:18:33. > :18:38.also the odd celebrity visit. There is also some great entertainment.
:18:38. > :18:48.Due to cutbacks in military operations the show will be smaller
:18:48. > :18:52.but it is still a massive drop to the public. It is the taxpayer who
:18:52. > :18:58.put those plays in the sky and it is the taxpayer who should see what
:18:58. > :19:02.gets done with them. -- put those planes in the sky. These planes
:19:02. > :19:06.will show the might of the military in the peaceful skies of the
:19:07. > :19:12.Cotswolds. Over there by the Dakota and you
:19:12. > :19:21.can see lots of news -- aircraft coming in, old and new, over the
:19:21. > :19:29.weekend. The money that is raised here is 85 % of the income for the
:19:29. > :19:34.RAF charity. People who pay BT to prices -- people will also pay
:19:34. > :19:40.ticket prices on the ground. This is as a Ukrainian flanker. I had
:19:40. > :19:44.been doing my research. This is the first time it has been here at the
:19:44. > :19:50.RAF Fairford. Some people have paid extra to come in and take
:19:51. > :19:57.photographs before the show starts. For you do not have to be a spotter
:19:57. > :20:04.to enjoy that. Frankie very much for that. He --
:20:04. > :20:07.thank you very much for that. Sport now and Bristol boxer Lee
:20:07. > :20:09.Haskins is looking to get his career back on track when he fights
:20:09. > :20:12.for two belts in Morocco tonight.Having had several bouts
:20:12. > :20:15.cancelled in the last 12 months. Haskins answered an 11th hour call
:20:15. > :20:18.to take on Mohamed Boulegcha in Marrakech. He'll be fighting in
:20:18. > :20:21.front of a crowd of 25,000 The England cricket captain Andrew
:20:21. > :20:23.Strauss arrived in Taunton today to start his preparations to guest
:20:23. > :20:26.star for Somerset. He'll play for the county in their match against
:20:26. > :20:29.India which begins tomorrow. It's all a warm up for England's test
:20:29. > :20:39.series against the Indians. And for Strauss it's a chance hopefully to
:20:39. > :20:45.
:20:45. > :20:55.restore his form as a batsman. Today the main attraction is not
:20:55. > :20:56.
:20:56. > :21:02.even here yet. Groundsman Simon Lee looks after the crucial wicket.
:21:02. > :21:07.Even he's excited. You want to see the batsman batting to their full
:21:07. > :21:11.potential. I had been looking forward to this all year. The club
:21:11. > :21:20.also can't wait. Rain stopped play once too often in their Twenty20
:21:20. > :21:25.series. To have at the Indians here is something special. We know there
:21:25. > :21:30.is going to be a good crowd. Hopefully the economics and
:21:30. > :21:35.balances it all out. The man the crowds also want to see allowed me
:21:35. > :21:42.the first word. How does it feel to be in Somerset? Lovely, a
:21:42. > :21:50.delightful day. As long as the rain stays away it should be a fund a
:21:50. > :21:54.few days. Inside he called it the perfect preparation. But it is
:21:54. > :21:59.wonderful to be down here. I would not be playing cricket if someone
:21:59. > :22:04.had not given me this opportunity. I am grateful to the club for
:22:04. > :22:12.allowing me to play. Hopefully I will get some runs before the Test
:22:12. > :22:17.match. The fans though weren't all so sure. He might do well, who
:22:17. > :22:25.knows. It is very nice from our point of view and from the club's
:22:25. > :22:28.point of view. It might give him some confidence before the series.
:22:28. > :22:35.Such an ending wasn't on Strauss' mind as he met the groundsman. It
:22:35. > :22:40.may be Simon's handy work that helps in the coming days.
:22:40. > :22:43.They are already heroes. But today they managed another a heroic feat.
:22:43. > :22:46.Royal Marines based in Somerset, all recovering from injuries, some

:23:09. > :23:13.them 140 miles into their challenge with just 10 miles to go. For the
:23:13. > :23:18.injured Royal Marines, the strain of five days of a rowing has taken
