:00:15. > :00:19.Hello, and welcome to the programme. In the headlines tonight, a toddler

:00:19. > :00:24.died has his drunken granny they passed out on the sofa. Three

:00:24. > :00:29.members of little Daniel's family are sentenced for neglect. If on

:00:29. > :00:33.parade again for another tragic homecoming, Wootton Bassett honours

:00:33. > :00:38.soldiers killed in Afghanistan. He wants to be in the army, to

:00:38. > :00:45.fight for his country, and he died doing something he loved. The

:00:45. > :00:49.trying to get out of a jam, a last- ditch attempts to get cash for

:00:49. > :00:54.Bristol's bus system. And we go abroad -- aboard a luxury

:00:54. > :00:59.cruise liner for an exclusive tour with the captain.

:00:59. > :01:03.The family of a toddler who drowned in a garden pond have all been

:01:03. > :01:08.given prison sentences suspended for two years. Daniel Rees-Smith

:01:08. > :01:13.fell into the pond at Hanham near Bristol as his grandmother who had

:01:13. > :01:17.been drinking set on the sofa. His parents were out at the nearby

:01:17. > :01:22.pub. An official report calls for improvements to social service

:01:22. > :01:28.practices, but places the blame for Daniel's death with the adults who

:01:28. > :01:33.were supposed to be caring for him. As his grandmother lay passed out

:01:33. > :01:39.on the sofa inside, two-year-old Daniel fell into this pond and

:01:39. > :01:44.Stroud. No one noticed he was missing. His parents were here at

:01:44. > :01:50.the Cross Keys pub, a short walk away. He was found at 10:30pm in

:01:50. > :01:55.the evening, but it was too late. His parents, Charlotte reach Smith

:01:56. > :02:03.and Andrew Marshall, together with grandmother Hilary Rees, had

:02:03. > :02:07.previously played pleaded guilty to neglect. -- Charlotte Rees-Smith.

:02:07. > :02:11.The cult heard how than you would start the day in dirty clothes, he

:02:11. > :02:16.would swap -- fall asleep on the floor. The house was described as

:02:16. > :02:20.dirty and foul-smelling. This evening, social services denied

:02:20. > :02:25.that any one person was responsible for Daniel's death, other than his

:02:25. > :02:30.family. The people responsible are those who were caring for him. The

:02:30. > :02:34.care was not good enough, and it led to this outcome. The family

:02:34. > :02:39.themselves deeply loved this child, others try to help them, and no one

:02:39. > :02:46.would have known this would happen. And the police described the death

:02:46. > :02:51.as tragedy -- tragic. It has been a tragic case. I would like to thank

:02:51. > :02:56.the family who have held us to bring this prosecution to court. A

:02:56. > :03:00.police cover up your pond if you have a toddler in the garden.

:03:00. > :03:04.Handing out suspended sentences, the judge said that the highly

:03:04. > :03:09.unusual aspect was that Daniel was well loved by his family, and that

:03:09. > :03:13.there was no physical assault upon him. There was no mark found upon

:03:13. > :03:19.his body. Hilary Rees was given a 12 month sentence, suspended for

:03:19. > :03:27.two years. Charlotte Rees-Smith was given 18 months suspended. All

:03:27. > :03:31.three will be placed on supervision orders for two years.

:03:31. > :03:35.A government minister came to Somerset today to announce a 32

:03:35. > :03:39.million package of help for Westland helicopters. It came on

:03:39. > :03:42.the day the company unveiled a brand new helicopter, which it is

:03:42. > :03:52.hoping will help safeguard thousands of jobs at his Yeovil

:03:52. > :03:53.

:03:53. > :03:58.factory. Quite a fanfare as Westland

:03:58. > :04:03.unveiled its be quite hope for the future. The government is in short

:04:03. > :04:07.of money. And then the business secretary told an audience of

:04:07. > :04:13.workers that not withstanding whole time -- hard times the taxpayer

:04:13. > :04:17.would be helping them out to the tune of 32 million. Does this

:04:17. > :04:24.breached European competition laws? It does not, it has been through

:04:24. > :04:29.all the proper processes. This is a valuable exercise, because what we

:04:29. > :04:34.are helping here is converting an industry from minister -- military

:04:34. > :04:38.to civilian application. It is a valuable UK-based technology with a

:04:38. > :04:45.big supply chain, thousands of jobs involved. This is a positive

:04:45. > :04:49.development. For years, West led's core business has been military

:04:49. > :04:54.helicopters. That is a market shrinking fast as defence budget

:04:54. > :05:00.around the world are cut. The sturdy AW169 is a determined

:05:00. > :05:04.attempt to break into the commercial market. And Vince Cable

:05:04. > :05:12.was a very welcome visitor here today, especially as he had come

:05:12. > :05:17.with government cash in his pocket. 22 million is actually a loan, 10

:05:17. > :05:22.million will be in grants to help research and development. The money

:05:22. > :05:27.is important to us, but beyond that it is the commitment from the

:05:27. > :05:32.Secretary of State in the UK helicopter injury and in high

:05:32. > :05:38.technology generally. That is why it is important. Today, Westland

:05:38. > :05:41.publicly side of the first to sales. They are to Warwickshire and

:05:41. > :05:48.Northamptonshire air ambulance. They predict another 1000 in the

:05:48. > :05:53.next 25 years. A man from Somerset has appeared in

:05:53. > :05:57.court today charged with murdering his wife. Stephen Hotson, who is 44

:05:57. > :06:03.and from Kewstoke, is accused of the killing after an incident in

:06:03. > :06:07.the village earlier this month. Stephen Hotson appeared before

:06:07. > :06:12.magistrates here at North Somerset this morning. Two charges were read

:06:12. > :06:18.out to him, the first being attempted arson. He is accused of

:06:18. > :06:22.trying to start a fire in Kewstoke on 5th July. The second charges of

:06:22. > :06:27.murder. Police believe that Stephen Hotson killed his wife between the

:06:27. > :06:32.second and 6th July for stop Stephen Hotson spoke only to

:06:32. > :06:37.confirm his name and date of birth, which she gave as 30th September

:06:37. > :06:41.1966. The body of his 51-year-old wife was found just over two weeks

:06:41. > :06:46.ago. Police were called to the village, just outside Weston-super-

:06:46. > :06:51.Mare, on 5th July, and cordoned off a whole area while officers carried

:06:51. > :06:56.out a detailed search. Stephen Hotson was later arrested. He

:06:56. > :07:01.arrived and left court in a prison van, as at present he is in police

:07:01. > :07:04.custody. He is due at Bristol crown court a week today. We are not

:07:04. > :07:14.likely to know until the autumn whether he will plead guilty or not

:07:14. > :07:19.guilty to the charges. A if you have just joined us, you are

:07:19. > :07:23.watching BBC Points West. Coming up on tonight's programme

:07:23. > :07:29.for stop it is Thursday, so it must be Bristol. I have been on board

:07:29. > :07:37.one of the biggest cruise ship to visit the West for a decade.

:07:37. > :07:40.And the fire station delivery for the little one who could not wait.

:07:40. > :07:45.A judge has retired to decide whether a Bristol businessman is

:07:45. > :07:50.well enough to be extradited to South Africa to stand trial over

:07:50. > :07:53.his wife's death. These African authorities are fighting to have

:07:53. > :07:58.Shrien Dewani extradited to face charges that he arranged to have

:07:58. > :08:04.his wife killed on their honeymoon. During this week's hearing, a court

:08:04. > :08:09.was told Mr Dewani was not well enough to travel. The judge will

:08:09. > :08:15.deliver his decision in August. What is next what for Shrien

:08:15. > :08:20.Dewani? Perhaps the biggest decision the

:08:20. > :08:23.district judge has to make is to determine whether or not he is

:08:23. > :08:28.confident Shrien Dewani is mentally robust enough to face trial in

:08:28. > :08:33.South Africa. The judge has three options available to him. He could

:08:33. > :08:37.decide to extradite Mr Dewani. That would be to be rubber-stamped by

:08:37. > :08:42.the Home Secretary. Secondly, he may decide he is not mentally fit

:08:42. > :08:46.enough for trial, and therefore ordering his discharge. The there

:08:46. > :08:51.is also a third option. That would allow the Republic of South Africa

:08:51. > :08:56.to resubmit its extradition request at a later date, if the authorities

:08:56. > :09:02.there decide to do so. Whichever side loses here may well seek leave

:09:02. > :09:11.to appeal. Any decision, any final verdict may well be weeks, months,

:09:11. > :09:16.possibly years away. Avery-year-old girl is missing from

:09:16. > :09:20.brick for -- Bristol. Lucia Nae was last seen in Easton two days ago

:09:20. > :09:25.with her mother. Detectives are appealing for information as a

:09:25. > :09:28.matter of urgency. They say she may be with family, and are appealing

:09:28. > :09:32.to the Romanian community for help finding her.

:09:32. > :09:36.The bodies of two more soldiers killed in Afghanistan have been

:09:36. > :09:40.returned home to their families this evening. The people of Wootton

:09:40. > :09:49.Bassett lined the streets of their town to pay tribute as the hearse

:09:49. > :09:53.is passed by. It will not be long now until the

:09:53. > :09:56.town hands over responsibility to repatriations to their colleagues

:09:56. > :10:00.with the Royal British Legion in Oxfordshire some time towards the

:10:00. > :10:05.end of August or the beginning of September. This is all to do with

:10:05. > :10:11.the closure of RAF Lyneham down the road. Until that happens, the town

:10:11. > :10:16.are turning out in force to honour the victims. Today is no exception

:10:16. > :10:21.to that, very large crowds on the High Street, as is always the case

:10:21. > :10:25.when a West Country rival man is amongst the dead.

:10:25. > :10:31.The flat of the Rifles Regiment on parade on Wootton Bassett High

:10:31. > :10:36.Street today. It is owner, Steve Jackson, knows all about the horror

:10:36. > :10:42.of improvised explosive devices. His son, serving in Afghanistan,

:10:42. > :10:46.was caught in a plaster just a few weeks ago. He had shrapnel wounds

:10:46. > :10:50.in both legs. What does that make you feel like when you know that

:10:51. > :10:58.someone is coming down today who was killed by one? It makes you

:10:58. > :11:02.think. It could have been my son coming back. For corporal mark

:11:02. > :11:08.Palin was not so lucky. He died after being caught in an improvised

:11:08. > :11:13.explosive device blast on Monday. He was serving with the rifles.

:11:13. > :11:17.Their history trait that is back to the glorious Gloucesters. Corporal

:11:18. > :11:27.Palin was 32. His wife was here in Wootton Bassett, pregnant with

:11:28. > :11:32.

:11:32. > :11:36.their daughter. Christmases were not be the same. His one-liners

:11:36. > :11:41.were superb, he would make you laugh. You could have a beer with

:11:41. > :11:48.him and relax. He would listen to your problems. Also repatriated

:11:48. > :11:54.today, the body of lance-corporal Paul Watkins. 24 years of age and

:11:54. > :11:58.from South Africa. He was killed in Helmand province last Saturday. He

:11:58. > :12:03.used to teach at these girls' school. He wants to fight for his

:12:03. > :12:09.country, and he died doing something he loves. It is pride

:12:09. > :12:16.that he was doing what he loved. And sat this that he is not with us

:12:16. > :12:22.any more. The so the toll rises. 377 have perished in Afghanistan

:12:22. > :12:26.since 2001. As the town of Wootton Bassett begins to see the end of

:12:26. > :12:29.the repatriation, you get a sense that the British soldiers are

:12:29. > :12:33.beginning to see the end game in Afghanistan. These two soldiers

:12:33. > :12:38.died in Helmand province, where the capital has now been handed over to

:12:38. > :12:43.Afghan soldiers and the police, in the hope that they can run the

:12:43. > :12:53.province and eventually the country itself. The the governor of Helmand

:12:53. > :12:54.

:12:54. > :12:58.Bros and -- Helmand province has Part of a major routes between

:12:58. > :13:04.Gloucester and Swindon remains close the seating following a lorry

:13:04. > :13:12.fire in the morning rush-hour. There have been long delays on the

:13:12. > :13:16.A417. The lorry, carrying 20 tons of rubber tyres, caught fire at 7am.

:13:16. > :13:21.Sections of the road had to be closed. The police say they have

:13:21. > :13:26.been trying to keep disruption to a minimum. Once we have let it burn

:13:26. > :13:31.out, we will make sure the area is safe and Hanover to the Highways

:13:31. > :13:35.Agency, and get the road system working as soon as it can. There is

:13:35. > :13:41.still a major risk to anyone using this part of the highway. The road

:13:41. > :13:46.is likely to stay shut overnight because the road services so badly

:13:46. > :13:54.damaged. Bristol's last hope for a new transport system is being

:13:54. > :13:58.unveiled right about now. They are being given details of a multi-

:13:58. > :14:02.million-pound scheme to fund the project. The government subsidies

:14:02. > :14:10.are owning this autumn, so there will be no chance of going back for

:14:10. > :14:15.a second try it. It is like the City of Bristol is catching to --

:14:15. > :14:22.running to catch the last bus. We can forget about transport funding

:14:23. > :14:29.for another generation every miss out. There is 114 million up for

:14:29. > :14:37.grabs. Many other councils are competing for the same cash.

:14:37. > :14:42.Bristol is congested and thousands of cars are using the roads. 16 mph

:14:42. > :14:46.is the average speed, the slowest outside London. Middlesbrough and

:14:46. > :14:52.Sheffield have got its their transport systems in order, and

:14:52. > :14:56.Bristol has missed out on a tram. They have come up --, with another

:14:56. > :15:02.better scheme. It is called Bus Rapid Transit. It is a mixture of

:15:02. > :15:08.bus lanes and bus-only roads and bridges. Not just any old bus but

:15:08. > :15:12.modern vehicles like these, which will give a snooze Metro style

:15:12. > :15:15.experience. They will even have wi- fi. The routes? Well, there are

:15:15. > :15:17.three of them - Ashton Vale to Temple Meads via the city centre

:15:17. > :15:19.and Cabots Circus, the South Bristol Link which will serve

:15:19. > :15:29.places like Hartcliffe and run up to Long Ashton, and the North

:15:29. > :15:33.

:15:33. > :15:37.Fringe - from Cribbs Causeway right The government will decide in

:15:37. > :15:42.September it be will get the drug - - grants. We have already missed

:15:42. > :15:46.out on a tram. If the City does not get the compromise scheme, the

:15:46. > :15:51.council says that its status as a great place to live and do business

:15:51. > :16:00.will be under threat. We all know that firefighters had to turn their

:16:00. > :16:06.hands to any emergencies. But one of fire -- one fire station had a

:16:06. > :16:12.big surprise. One man's wife was going into labour. He realised he

:16:12. > :16:17.was not going to make it in time, and made a dramatic B tour to South

:16:17. > :16:23.needs fire station with just minutes to spare. They went back to

:16:23. > :16:33.say thanks to some very unlikely midwives. What do you remember?

:16:33. > :16:37.

:16:37. > :16:43.a lot. All panic stations. My wife was going into labour. There she is.

:16:43. > :16:51.She said she didn't feel right, and so she pulled her trousers down and

:16:51. > :17:00.as I was driving, it was already out. The fire station was just up

:17:00. > :17:05.the road, so I said let's pull in there. Hello. Nice to see you!

:17:05. > :17:15.Luckily, there was one of the guys coming into work. He said drive-

:17:15. > :17:22.through. I parked up there, and I ran round to Claire, and as I put

:17:22. > :17:27.mine by hand on her head, she came out. Dad did all the work. He

:17:27. > :17:36.delivered the baby. We were there looking after him. We provided

:17:36. > :17:44.oxygen and a few blankets. For me, it was just so fast, and I panicked

:17:44. > :17:54.when she was not crying. That was what was right -- that is what was

:17:54. > :17:54.

:17:54. > :18:04.worrying me the most. It was all a bit of a daze. I was centre stage.

:18:04. > :18:05.

:18:05. > :18:10.We will not forget her! We will not forget you! We were overjoyed.

:18:10. > :18:16.sweet. I bet those boys would be great in and an emergency. Now a

:18:16. > :18:22.touch of luxury slipped into Bristol today. An elegant cruise

:18:22. > :18:27.ship, its type not seen here in 10 years. There was a choice of day

:18:27. > :18:33.trips for the 800 passengers took Bristol, Bath, Wells, the Cotswolds

:18:33. > :18:43.and South Wales. Tourism bosses here hope these cruises will be a

:18:43. > :18:43.

:18:43. > :18:49.regular occurrence. I was lucky The Royal Portbury Docks are more

:18:49. > :18:55.accustomed to freight than elegant cruise ships, up but today it

:18:55. > :18:58.enjoyed the glamour of the arrival of MS Prisendam. It has a nine

:18:58. > :19:08.decks, and I was like -- lucky enough to be invited on board with

:19:08. > :19:14.

:19:14. > :19:19.Tell us where we are now. We are in the Crow's Nest, which is above the

:19:19. > :19:23.navigation bridge. It is for guests to enjoy it piano music in the

:19:23. > :19:32.evening, and also, it is a fantastic view outside. It really

:19:32. > :19:42.is. You can enjoy the sunset. No better place than up here.Spiny!

:19:42. > :19:49.

:19:49. > :19:56.-- you are inspiring me! We are classed as a small cruise ship.

:19:56. > :20:02.have 800 guests, and 470 crew. They are from 21 different countries.

:20:02. > :20:08.They are from far and wide. As we stand outside one of York swimming

:20:08. > :20:14.pools, how difficult is Bristol to negotiate? For me, it is a complete

:20:14. > :20:21.novelty. Most of the ports, 99 % of them, are straight in from receipt.

:20:21. > :20:29.This one is up an estuary. It is also through a lock, which is 30 or

:20:29. > :20:39.40 metres above the height of low water. A lot of the cruises are in

:20:39. > :20:44.

:20:44. > :20:51.What are the chances?! This is what you really want to see. This is a

:20:51. > :21:01.superior suite. It is not the biggest they have. Outside, we can

:21:01. > :21:03.

:21:03. > :21:08.come and relax and just enjoy it As we disembarked, I should say

:21:08. > :21:15.welcome to the West Country! White Bristol? We have many guests who

:21:15. > :21:19.collect ports, but it is also the gateway to Bath, and the Cotswolds.

:21:19. > :21:24.And Bristol is a lovely city. won't get a chance to explore, but

:21:24. > :21:32.thank you for giving us the chance to have a look round. Back to the

:21:33. > :21:37.What is the wrong - for what is wrong with the view over here? It

:21:37. > :21:44.wasn't quite the Caribbean! The temperatures were fantastic this

:21:44. > :21:50.morning. I was surprised the sun loungers went for a look. One of

:21:50. > :22:00.the guests on board said that Bristol is full of guerrillas! We

:22:00. > :22:05.

:22:05. > :22:10.Any story needs drama and romance. There is a new story is about a

:22:10. > :22:20.family of peregrine falcons above son John's Church. One woman has

:22:20. > :22:30.

:22:30. > :22:34.not missed a single episode of the What -- watching every move, Anja

:22:34. > :22:40.has lost -- not missed a thing. She has shed the drama with passers-by.

:22:40. > :22:45.It is a story of heartbreak. male bird went off one day. He

:22:45. > :22:52.never came back. The mother was stuck there with chicks, which

:22:52. > :22:57.would have been difficult to raise by herself. But he returned, and

:22:57. > :23:04.looked after them, and lucky for them he did. As well as heroes,

:23:04. > :23:13.there is drama. The female chick fell down a chimney. Unfortunately

:23:13. > :23:21.the chimney she fell down was that of our RSPB leader. Then there was

:23:21. > :23:25.the episode with the police. 10pm, my phone rang. It was the police.

:23:25. > :23:32.We do like to collect your chick? He is at the police station! He got

:23:32. > :23:36.wet, and he did not have the strength to take-off. These chicks

:23:36. > :23:42.have until next spring to get some independence. That is when they

:23:42. > :23:52.will be making all over again. is a cross between a soap opera and

:23:52. > :23:53.
