:00:09. > :00:13.Good evening and welcome to BBC Points West. Our headlines tonight:
:00:13. > :00:16.A touch of the Wild West - sheep rustlers move in as the price of
:00:16. > :00:23.lamb goes up. The wind changes for Honda - now,
:00:23. > :00:27.the company is scaling back its plans for new turbines. Well, yes,
:00:27. > :00:30.they've got rid of the one that would dominate my house, but there
:00:30. > :00:32.are other people involved in this, and if people don't want these
:00:32. > :00:36.things dominating their skyline, then all fair and good, they'll
:00:36. > :00:40.still get my support." No water under the bridge - two
:00:40. > :00:43.rivers in Wiltshire dry up after a rain-free spring.
:00:43. > :00:53.And putting the boot in - what happened when this woman got really,
:00:53. > :00:56.
:00:56. > :01:00.Hello. Thousands of sheep are been stolen in the West as thieves try
:01:00. > :01:02.to make a tasty profit from the increasing cost of lamb. Today, a
:01:02. > :01:07.farmers' insurance company said the region was now the worst affected
:01:07. > :01:11.by sheep rustlers in the whole country. And there's a public
:01:11. > :01:15.danger, too. Police say stolen meat being butchered by amateurs is a
:01:15. > :01:25.health risk. Andrew Plant has been talking to famers at the famous
:01:25. > :01:30.
:01:30. > :01:34.The value of wool had stayed static for the lamb been revealed he will
:01:34. > :01:37.fetch a premium price. Several thousands have been stolen the
:01:37. > :01:43.South West already this year as meat becomes an increasingly
:01:43. > :01:47.expensive commodity. At the moment, they're not importing New Zealand
:01:47. > :01:52.lamb which means the price of lamb in our country is increasing. That
:01:52. > :01:57.in itself obviously means that people who are committing the
:01:57. > :02:01.offences are getting more return for their money. This is how one
:02:01. > :02:05.Dorset farmer solved the problem. At the end of his tether, after
:02:05. > :02:11.having 200 story. Farmers here are looking for more practical
:02:11. > :02:14.solutions like making sure no one buys on the black market. Sheep
:02:15. > :02:19.rustling is a really high risk crime but with a very high price of
:02:19. > :02:23.lamb at the moment, it is become increasingly attractive to
:02:23. > :02:26.criminals. Police are saying these lambs aren't what anything if the
:02:26. > :02:32.prig -- if the criminals cannot sell the meat. If you are offered
:02:32. > :02:40.some, do not buy it. But with prices high and prosecutions below,
:02:40. > :02:46.sheep rustling is booming. With many animals stolen this year and
:02:47. > :02:54.with the South West at the top of the rustling table. A typical man
:02:55. > :02:59.like this here, you are talking 75, 85 apiece. A video recorder stolen
:03:00. > :03:05.from someone's house will cost five or 10, generally. It can be good
:03:05. > :03:10.money as well. These lambs were rescued in a full, bundled into a
:03:10. > :03:15.car pulled over on the M25. It is not all well organised. But it is
:03:15. > :03:21.well paid. Lasted, the South West was the first worst region in the
:03:21. > :03:27.UK for livestock rustling but this year, it is first in the list of
:03:27. > :03:31.targets. So, it is something we are keen to warn farmers about. The
:03:31. > :03:36.livestock may be at risk and they should watch their sheep and cattle
:03:36. > :03:41.and pigs very carefully. No one issue with the stall and lambs are
:03:41. > :03:44.butchered or where they are sold. This show is a long way from the
:03:44. > :03:49.Wild West but old-fashioned sheep rustling is very much a West
:03:49. > :03:52.Country problem. The car makers Honda is to scale
:03:52. > :03:57.back its plans to build three giant wind turbines at its factory in
:03:57. > :04:02.Swindon. The plan now is to have just two because so many of the
:04:02. > :04:06.nearby residents have complained about the 400 feet high structures.
:04:06. > :04:15.So, will the latest compromise win over the neighbours? Scott Ellis
:04:15. > :04:19.For a while, Andy Ings has been living in fear, worried that a 400
:04:19. > :04:23.feet high wind turbine would be built near his home. But today,
:04:23. > :04:33.some good news in the post. Honda and developers Ecotricity say the
:04:33. > :04:38.
:04:38. > :04:42.mast closest to homes has been withdrawn. We will give we took
:04:42. > :04:46.away the they are tired line, we would double the separation and
:04:46. > :04:56.takeaway the cause for concern. will Andy Ings and others now give
:04:56. > :05:00.up the fight? The turbine that most affects me won't be built but that
:05:00. > :05:04.does not affect everybody and I will support others in their
:05:04. > :05:13.campaign. That might disappoint the developers and Honda. This is their
:05:13. > :05:16.map. But for some, that's not good enough. If we could the guidelines
:05:16. > :05:21.in Scotland, of the Bill going through the House of Lords, both of
:05:21. > :05:27.these took about a separation distance of two kilometres. So, we
:05:27. > :05:32.may not have seen the last of these placards. The original application
:05:32. > :05:36.was the four wind turbines. That went down to three, and now two.
:05:36. > :05:41.The company must be feeling they have compromised enough. Those who
:05:41. > :05:46.support them say it is vital that the two wind turbines are built so
:05:46. > :05:53.that Honda can reduce their energy costs here at the plant. Their
:05:53. > :05:55.annual energy bill is more than 8 million in Swindon. Wind power
:05:55. > :06:02.would reduce that. This pub benefits from having Honda nearby.
:06:02. > :06:06.The landlord thinks it's time to say yes to turbines. This is their
:06:06. > :06:10.most expensive plant to run. Anything that can help to reduce
:06:10. > :06:13.that and keep them in Swindon is a good thing for the local community.
:06:13. > :06:23.Honda say two turbines is a pragmatic workable solution. It'll
:06:23. > :06:26.
:06:26. > :06:29.be down to planners to decide in You're watching BBC Points West.
:06:29. > :06:39.Stay with us as there's much more still to bring you tonight,
:06:39. > :06:42.
:06:42. > :06:46.Derby night at Ashton Gate. Who will go through to next round of
:06:46. > :06:49.the Cup? And see them first. We meet a very
:06:49. > :06:58.special choir - about to sing live for us, as they prepare to perform
:06:58. > :07:01.on Children In Need night on First though, a 1.5 million
:07:01. > :07:06.sculpture by the artist Damien Hirst has been vandalised outside a
:07:06. > :07:11.Bristol art gallery. The Charity statue at the front of the Royal
:07:11. > :07:14.West of England Academy has been targeted with graffiti. It's not
:07:15. > :07:18.the first time the building's been hit. Another exhibit - a statue -
:07:18. > :07:27.was broken into three pieces in June. But the Academy says it won't
:07:27. > :07:31.stop them putting pieces on display in future. We're very disappointed
:07:31. > :07:35.that this sort of thing should happen again. It is not the first
:07:35. > :07:42.time this has happened. We have some damage to another sculpture
:07:42. > :07:45.recently. It won't stop us putting pieces out door. It won't deter us.
:07:45. > :07:48.Police are now studying CCTV footage to try to identify the
:07:48. > :07:51.culprit responsible for this latest vandalism.
:07:51. > :07:56.A gorilla put on display as part of celebrations to mark the 150th
:07:56. > :08:01.birthday of Bristol Zoo has been stolen. The half-sized model, named
:08:01. > :08:05.Werburt, had been put on display at St Werburgh's City Farm. He'd been
:08:05. > :08:08.decorated by children from the local primary school. Staff at the
:08:08. > :08:18.farm say he disappeared from his wooden stand overnight, despite
:08:18. > :08:19.
:08:19. > :08:22.being kept in an enclosure surrounded by a fence. He is a real
:08:22. > :08:25.character. We have had him for a couple of months and we have been
:08:25. > :08:30.moving him around to different areas so the children can enjoy
:08:30. > :08:35.finding where he is. They will be gutted to find out in September
:08:35. > :08:38.when they go back to school that he has gone. Staff at the city farm
:08:38. > :08:41.hope the thieves will have a change of heart and the gorilla will be
:08:41. > :08:44.returned before the start of the new school year.
:08:44. > :08:48.The Tropicana in Weston-super-Mare could be demolished next summer if
:08:48. > :08:51.plans to redevelop it aren't in place soon. North Somerset Council
:08:51. > :08:54.is meeting on Friday to discuss the future of the derelict site on the
:08:55. > :08:58.seafront. It's warned if no suitable schemes are suggested in
:08:58. > :09:01.the next six months, the swimming pool will be filled in and the
:09:01. > :09:07.building knocked down. The local authority's now asking for
:09:07. > :09:10.interested parties to come forward with small-scale ideas.
:09:10. > :09:14.People living in the town of Mere in Wiltshire have been battling to
:09:14. > :09:19.save wildlife from two rivers which have completely dried out. They
:09:19. > :09:22.claim Wessex Water is taking too much water from underground springs.
:09:22. > :09:26.The two tributaries of the River Stour, which flow around Mere, have
:09:26. > :09:36.run dry. Wessex has denied they're to blame, citing this year's dry
:09:36. > :09:38.
:09:38. > :09:43.spring for the receding water. Sabet Choudhury reports. This river
:09:43. > :09:48.is running dry. It had left the way of life struggling. But it wasn't
:09:48. > :09:54.always like this. It was a fast- flowing chalk stream. It was a
:09:54. > :10:00.place where people could get water from the springs for drinking. It
:10:00. > :10:04.was a place with the children could play. It was a delight. Walking
:10:04. > :10:08.along the bed of this river, you can tell it was quite a fast-
:10:08. > :10:12.flowing river, filling both sides of this white bank. Today, it is
:10:12. > :10:19.near enough bone-dry. This is a temporary sanctuary built by the
:10:19. > :10:23.local children to help the struggling wildlife. These are the
:10:23. > :10:28.fish that the children have been catching and moving downstream to
:10:28. > :10:33.keep safe. These little chats live underneath stones and when the
:10:33. > :10:38.river price up, they stay under the stones so unfortunately, when the
:10:38. > :10:45.river dries up, they dry out. Shepherd is the New River monitor
:10:45. > :10:51.but lately, he has been rather redundant. I don't have enough
:10:51. > :11:00.water to monitor. It is very, very sad. This used to be a vibrant
:11:00. > :11:06.chalk stream with all the flies, the lovely comic Kingfisher's, all
:11:06. > :11:10.disappeared. The locals say the state of the river is the resort of
:11:10. > :11:14.Wessex Water extracting too much to provide for our drinking needs. The
:11:14. > :11:19.company denied the claim and blamed the dry spring and summer for the
:11:19. > :11:23.drought. You cannot pretend that taking water out to drink doesn't
:11:23. > :11:31.make the difference to the river but climatic changes are much
:11:31. > :11:35.bigger and what we take out is much is very consistent. I think the
:11:36. > :11:39.change in water levels is down to the rainfall. From now until the
:11:39. > :11:44.river fills again, these children are using their holidays to save
:11:44. > :11:53.the dying fish, although there is a fear that the river will be long
:11:53. > :11:57.gone for their children to enjoy it. To respond to some e-mails, we
:11:57. > :12:00.found the missing Wednesday. Now to some astonishing pictures of
:12:00. > :12:03.a woman who dramatically lost her temper outside a bank in Chippenham.
:12:03. > :12:07.She's seen taking off her stilleto and lashing out in a spectacular
:12:07. > :12:10.display of anger. The scenes are reminiscent of Basil Fawlty but
:12:10. > :12:15.what was the object of her displeasure? And why did she put
:12:15. > :12:18.the boot in? Will Glennon has been finding out.
:12:18. > :12:23.It's normally a fairly simple process at the cash machine. You
:12:23. > :12:27.put your card in and out comes the money. Difficult to put a foot
:12:27. > :12:37.wrong, isn't it? Well, take a look at this - a true case of cash
:12:37. > :12:40.
:12:40. > :12:45.She was filmed with clearly one sole purpose, taking her shoes off
:12:45. > :12:51.and smacking the cash machine as hard as she could. Why is she doing
:12:51. > :12:56.it? Is she a overdrawn and seeing red? Was her card stuck inside?
:12:56. > :13:05.Police did not think that. She does not do it just once. She attacks
:13:05. > :13:09.again. And when that has not worked, she stops and thinks, hit it harder.
:13:09. > :13:14.Then, the third attack. This time it is an all out attack. She
:13:14. > :13:20.stepped back to get herself extra room. That is a forceful way to
:13:20. > :13:24.enter your mid- -- security number. Just when you thought it was
:13:24. > :13:30.finished, another attack. What are these use made of to take that kind
:13:30. > :13:33.of battering? The screen and the key pad at at cash machine in
:13:33. > :13:39.Chippenham were smashed in. Police said the woman did not got any
:13:39. > :13:49.money and the card was not inside. But they are baffled about the
:13:49. > :13:50.
:13:50. > :13:55.reasons why that cash machine The woman concerned is in very
:13:55. > :14:01.serious trouble with the police. The screen had keypad were damaged
:14:01. > :14:06.and nobody else could use it that night. Anybody with any information
:14:06. > :14:10.is urged to contact the police. For the second time in four days,
:14:10. > :14:15.Swindon are involved in a derby match. This time, the Carling Cup
:14:15. > :14:24.first round match against Bristol City. Here is our correspondent and
:14:24. > :14:27.Ashton Gate. Will it have the same intensity as the Oxford match?
:14:27. > :14:32.will be honest and say normally these third round matches did not
:14:32. > :14:38.get very big crowds but this is a local derby. They have not played
:14:38. > :14:46.each other in more than five years. It is just 10 to get into night.
:14:46. > :14:49.They should get a good crowd. They want to give their home fans a good
:14:49. > :14:56.result at Ashton Gate. Swindon arrived in the last few minutes.
:14:56. > :15:02.Some of the players are behind me. Paulo Di Canio is leading his team
:15:02. > :15:07.off the bus. He will be looking to turn things around after two three
:15:07. > :15:11.consecutive defeats. He was on the wrong end of one result in the past
:15:11. > :15:18.couple of days. Both sets of supporters have got work to do to
:15:18. > :15:22.convince themselves. City first. think it is achievable but we have
:15:22. > :15:30.got to get some players out and the manager wants to bring some players
:15:30. > :15:39.in. A couple of defenders, I think. Yes. The back four seems a bit more
:15:39. > :15:43.solid. I hope it can keep happening. There have been good times. But it
:15:43. > :15:49.is still very early days. Obviously results have been quite
:15:49. > :15:54.disappointing. The general style of play is much better than last year
:15:54. > :15:58.by far. It is just putting the last chance is a weight. We have got
:15:58. > :16:08.strike is coming in which can hope fully appreciate that. -- chances
:16:08. > :16:12.in the net. BBC Radio Bristol and BBC Radio Wiltshire are with me now.
:16:12. > :16:19.They are kidding, Terry tonight. A couple of decent results for
:16:19. > :16:23.Bristol City, Ed Hadwin? They could not defend at all. It was not a
:16:23. > :16:29.great performance but they are growing into the season a little
:16:29. > :16:33.bit. Room for improvement but getting better. Paulo Di Canio is
:16:34. > :16:41.entertainment in itself. Is there substance in what he has said?
:16:41. > :16:45.Slowly but surely. They have lost a three league matches and supporters
:16:45. > :16:50.are getting a bit worried. They should have got a result against
:16:50. > :16:56.Oxford on Sunday. They will be hoping for something better tonight.
:16:56. > :17:00.You are about five yards apart? Any banter between yourselves?
:17:00. > :17:06.quarter will be given in the commentary box! Will it be
:17:06. > :17:09.difficult tonight? Swindon have got to play their home game tonight and
:17:09. > :17:16.not get drawn into the fact that they are playing a Championship
:17:16. > :17:21.team. We will let you get set up. You are both broadcasting in about
:17:21. > :17:26.10 minutes. Get all the way to the commentary box. That is where they
:17:26. > :17:33.will be. They will be at the back of the Williams stand. A bit of
:17:33. > :17:37.transferred use at Ashton Gate. Liam Fontaine and his move to
:17:37. > :17:42.Southampton has broken down. The clubs had agreed a deal which would
:17:42. > :17:48.have been worth about 1 billion for Bristol City. But he travelled
:17:48. > :17:56.to Southampton and the deal has been called off. -- 1 million. I
:17:56. > :18:00.asked the manager how he felt. is a player that I liked very much
:18:00. > :18:06.as a person and he is one of our best defenders and I am delighted
:18:06. > :18:12.the deal has collapsed. We want him to be part of the team. Not any
:18:12. > :18:18.chance of him coming back? I do not think there is any chance. He is a
:18:18. > :18:22.key part of our squad. He will play a big part of this year.
:18:22. > :18:27.Southampton, the club involved, will play the winners of this match
:18:27. > :18:34.between Bristol City and Swindon. Bristol Rovers already won last
:18:34. > :18:40.night against a Championship team, Watford, beating them on penalties.
:18:40. > :18:43.What that might not be in the best of form but they are above Bristol
:18:43. > :18:46.in the divisions and the manager understood a tart up said was
:18:46. > :18:56.needed. It looked like seniority needed. It looked like seniority
:18:56. > :18:57.
:18:57. > :19:04.would tell. Watford did not run away. The equaliser was spectacular.
:19:04. > :19:11.What a goal! But they had chances again. Especially when it is shot

:19:17. > :19:26.It was tested to its very foundations. The shoot-out. Scott
:19:26. > :19:34.Bevan gave them an early advantage. Wayne Brown put them 3-2 ahead.

:19:43. > :19:47.was outstanding. What a magnificent effort. It has been a great season
:19:47. > :19:53.and it was a fantastic finish. This got us back into the game straight
:19:53. > :20:03.away it. A Night To Remember and a second round match against Leyton

:20:03. > :20:07.This match at Ashton Gate is not be any Derby tonight. In cricket,
:20:07. > :20:11.Somerset play against Gloucestershire in the CB40. They
:20:11. > :20:15.are looking to get a place in the semi-finals. Gloucestershire cannot
:20:15. > :20:20.make the semi-finals but they are hoping to put on a good performance
:20:20. > :20:30.against their West Country rivals. Rain has reduced to these matches

:20:47. > :20:57.What is the forecast going to be like? We are looking up at the
:20:57. > :21:06.skies! I have got my trusty debt of his umbrella. But I will not need
:21:06. > :21:11.that because it is dry. -- my trusty umbrella. We have got a
:21:11. > :21:13.picture which we can show on your graphic. We have had a cold front
:21:13. > :21:20.graphic. We have had a cold front which has been moving in from the
:21:20. > :21:24.West today. Pretty strong looking showers. People have asked me to
:21:24. > :21:28.promise them that they will have plenty of sunshine during the Bank
:21:28. > :21:37.Holiday weekend. I can promise it will get settled by Sunday and
:21:37. > :21:42.Monday. Sunshine and showers. Some will be heavy in places. We have
:21:42. > :21:48.got this weather system moving across the West. This is developing
:21:48. > :21:55.and it will bring heavy rain for many of us. Tomorrow, sunny spells
:21:55. > :22:01.and showers. Predominantly in the West. We have got a yellow alert
:22:01. > :22:06.because of rain tonight. This is essentially because of the threat
:22:06. > :22:12.of 25 mm in a couple of hours in some districts, particularly in the
