:00:11. > :00:16.Hello, and welcome to BBC Points West. In tonight's headlines:

:00:16. > :00:19.Suspected arson attack at a well- known pub. Police arrest a 16-year-

:00:19. > :00:22.old after the entire building is gutted in a blaze.

:00:22. > :00:32.After a couple are jailed for a sham wedding, there are fears

:00:32. > :00:32.

:00:32. > :00:38.genuine refugee cases will be threatened. There was no affection,

:00:38. > :00:43.no tactility, they were just there. They were there to show me, we live

:00:43. > :00:46.in your parish, you have to marry Also tonight, we meet the self-

:00:46. > :00:53.styled Ninja superhero who is trying to protect the people of

:00:53. > :00:58.Yeovil every night. And join me arm bored bishop in the

:00:58. > :01:02.centre of Gloucester, where the docks have been decked out for the

:01:02. > :01:05.Tall Ships Festival -- on board Hello.

:01:05. > :01:10.A 16-year-old boy has been questioned by police after fire

:01:10. > :01:13.destroyed one the region's most well-known pubs. Fire crews spent

:01:13. > :01:15.much of the day damping down the remains of the building in

:01:16. > :01:19.Gloucester. Emergency services were called out

:01:19. > :01:22.in the early hours of this morning. At the height of the blaze, the

:01:22. > :01:31.flames could be seen for miles around. Here is our Gloucestershire

:01:31. > :01:37.reporter, Steve Knibbs. At its peak, this was a huge and

:01:37. > :01:40.intense blaze. 50 firefighters from across the county were brought in

:01:40. > :01:43.to tackle it. One of the owners, who was inside at the time, managed

:01:43. > :01:46.to escape, but one of her dogs was killed. A policeman was also

:01:46. > :01:49.treated in hospital for breathing in smoke. With major structural

:01:49. > :01:57.damage, firefighters could not get inside so their job was to make

:01:57. > :02:00.sure the fire did not spread. used the appliance to damp down at

:02:00. > :02:03.the scene, make the same safe and control the fire water run-off to

:02:03. > :02:07.make sure it is not going into the drains where it could pollute the

:02:07. > :02:12.water. In the morning daylight, the true extent of the damage is clear.

:02:12. > :02:17.The entire pub and restaurant destroyed. The damage is so bad it

:02:17. > :02:21.is likely the building will have to be demolished. But the focus is

:02:21. > :02:24.turning to the investigation. Scenes of crimes of scissors and

:02:24. > :02:29.fire investigators are here, trying to find out how and why the fire

:02:29. > :02:33.started. -- scenes of crimes officers. And it is delicate work,

:02:33. > :02:38.piecing through the charred remains looking for vital evidence.

:02:38. > :02:42.first job, excavating a fire scene, is to remove the roof area which

:02:42. > :02:50.has fallen in and will not provide forensic evidence. Once we dig

:02:50. > :02:53.deeper, there might be a lot of evidence preserves and a need.

:02:53. > :02:57.preserved underneath. The Orchard was a popular venue. When it opened

:02:57. > :03:00.in the late 80s, it was the 200th Beefeater pub in the country, and a

:03:00. > :03:03.major destination locally. Today it is in different hands, but the

:03:03. > :03:06.owners face an uncertain future, their staff looking for new jobs.

:03:06. > :03:09.am trying to find a venue for our wedding... And the fallout of the

:03:09. > :03:12.fire extends elsewhere. Jason Smith and Lynn Burns are good friends

:03:12. > :03:15.with the owners, and were planning to hold their wedding reception at

:03:15. > :03:19.the Orchard in a fortnight. Devastated, I think. That is the

:03:19. > :03:25.only way I can describe it. Very worried about what we are going to

:03:25. > :03:29.do. More importantly, my concern is for the owners. Once we knew they

:03:29. > :03:35.were OK, it was the thought of having to sort out the wedding and

:03:35. > :03:39.changed everything. Early this morning, a 60-year-old boy from

:03:39. > :03:45.Gloucester was arrested on suspicion of arson. He is still in

:03:45. > :03:48.custody, being questioned. A man and a woman have been charged

:03:48. > :03:51.with child neglect after a toddler was found dead in a house in

:03:51. > :03:54.Bristol. Jamie Green, who is 32, and 35-year-old Sonia Britton were

:03:54. > :03:58.arrested after the body of the two- year-old boy was found in a flat on

:03:58. > :04:01.Bell Hill Road in St George. They have been remanded in custody and

:04:01. > :04:03.will appear before Bristol magistrates in the morning. How the

:04:03. > :04:09.child died is still unclear, and further forensic tests are being

:04:09. > :04:12.carried out. Nearly a thousand people attended

:04:12. > :04:17.the funeral of a Wiltshire teenager who was killed by a polar bear

:04:17. > :04:19.while on expedition in Norway. Horatio Chapple, who was 17 and

:04:19. > :04:24.from Bishopstone near Salisbury, was attacked by the animal, which

:04:25. > :04:27.had got into his tent. This afternoon's heavy rain did not put

:04:27. > :04:36.off the hundreds of mourners who packed Salisbury Cathedral for the

:04:36. > :04:40.service. A young man who was full of life

:04:40. > :04:44.and full of fun and adventure, clearly a sportsman. His mother has

:04:44. > :04:49.written a marvellous tribute for the beginning of this order of

:04:49. > :04:55.service that describes him and evokes, I never knew her ratio, but

:04:55. > :04:59.I get a sense of him as a young man with his future before him -- I

:04:59. > :05:01.never knew Horatio Chapple. He had get-up-and-go and an instinct for

:05:01. > :05:04.friendship. Some of Horatio Chapple's fellow

:05:04. > :05:07.adventurers, who were with him in Svalbard when he died, were also

:05:07. > :05:10.among today's congregation. A refugee action group is warning

:05:10. > :05:16.the latest sham marriage uncovered in Gloucestershire could damage the

:05:16. > :05:19.chances of success for genuine cases. A man and a woman were

:05:19. > :05:22.jailed this week after trying to get married for the purpose of

:05:22. > :05:25.being allowed to stay in this country. And new figures reveal an

:05:25. > :05:28.increasing number of foreigners are keen to settle here. Last year

:05:28. > :05:34.there was a 21% rise in the number of migrants coming to the UK, while

:05:34. > :05:37.the number leaving hit a six-year low. Sabet Choudhury reports.

:05:37. > :05:42.Father of two Mojeed Bello, from Nigeria, wanted a future in the UK

:05:42. > :05:48.for his children and partner. His solution was to pay this woman,

:05:48. > :05:51.Carina Mersalina, a Dutch national with EU passport, to marry him.

:05:51. > :05:54.Bello came to this church in Gloucester to ask the vicar to

:05:54. > :06:02.conduct the ceremony. And that is where his deception started to fall

:06:02. > :06:07.apart. There did not seem to be a particular chemistry between them.

:06:07. > :06:12.They did not seem to be madly in love. There was something within me

:06:12. > :06:21.that was saying, this is not real. There is something amiss about this.

:06:21. > :06:26.I needed to check-up. That is why I wanted to bring the police and

:06:26. > :06:30.check that my suspicions were correct, which they were. This is

:06:30. > :06:34.the flat that the couple had told Reverend Simpson that they live

:06:34. > :06:40.that. When he came here to meet them, he realised there were little

:06:40. > :06:44.signs of domestic bliss, or that they actually live here at all.

:06:44. > :06:48.After the tip-off from Reverend Simpson and the police

:06:48. > :06:51.investigation, the couple were arrested. And they have both been

:06:51. > :06:54.jailed. Today, new figures show an increasing number of people are

:06:55. > :06:57.keen to make their home in the UK. Last year, for the first time, the

:06:57. > :07:05.number of immigrants living in Britain broke the 7 million mark.

:07:05. > :07:07.But the desire to stay can sometimes prompt desperate measures.

:07:07. > :07:11.And sham marriages have now raised concern amongst charities which

:07:11. > :07:16.help asylum seekers. They feel they make genuine cases where refugees

:07:16. > :07:19.want to marry EU nationals much more difficult. It has always been

:07:19. > :07:23.quite hard for people to get married to genuinely want to get

:07:23. > :07:27.married. But Home Office used to make people apply for a certificate

:07:27. > :07:31.of approval, but that was abolished recently because it was deemed

:07:31. > :07:36.unlawful this year. It is still very hard for people to marry

:07:36. > :07:39.because they have to show appropriate ID, which they often

:07:39. > :07:42.don't have. The UK Border Agency told us today that, "This case

:07:42. > :07:47.shows the desperate nature of immigration crime, with large sums

:07:47. > :07:50.of money changing hands". With immigration continuing to rise,

:07:50. > :07:53.Reverend Simpson and other vicars are being asked by the authorities

:07:53. > :08:03.to remain vigilant to spot any other marriages which may not be

:08:03. > :08:03.

:08:04. > :08:06.genuine. It is the start of the August bank

:08:06. > :08:09.holiday weekend, and you are watching your regional news

:08:09. > :08:12.programme, BBC Points West. And stay with us, as there is much

:08:12. > :08:16.more still to bring you, including: For two years running, always the

:08:16. > :08:25.bridesmaid but never the bride. Can Somerset finally bring home the

:08:25. > :08:29.silverware this weekend? And for the cricket at Edgbaston,

:08:29. > :08:33.we are expecting showers from time to time tomorrow, not as heavy as

:08:33. > :08:37.today. A similar story in Gloucester for the Tall Ships

:08:37. > :08:41.Festival, but things will improve as we get to bank holiday Monday.

:08:42. > :08:44.More later. A 59-year-old man from Gloucester

:08:44. > :08:50.is still being questioned on suspicion of making threats to

:08:50. > :08:53.Louise Mensch, the MP for Corby. The Metropolitan Police said the

:08:53. > :08:55.man was arrested in Gloucester as part of an investigation into

:08:55. > :09:00."malicious communication and threats" via email and social

:09:00. > :09:03.networking sites. Teenagers suffering from cancer

:09:03. > :09:09.could soon be treated at their own dedicated unit in one of Bristol's

:09:09. > :09:15.hospitals. The new 13.5 million plans would see an extension of the

:09:15. > :09:20.Haematology and Oncology Centre at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. The

:09:20. > :09:23.proposals have been welcomed by the hospital's board. It would mean

:09:23. > :09:29.adults and teenagers could be cared for in wards that are appropriate

:09:29. > :09:32.for their age and without changing nurses during treatment.

:09:32. > :09:38.A fresh warning has been issued to motorists driving on beaches in the

:09:38. > :09:41.Somerset area after another 4x4 had to be towed to safety at Berrow.

:09:41. > :09:44.Beach wardens and the Burnham-based rescue charity BARB were called in

:09:44. > :09:50.after a holidaymaker's car became stranded in mud several hundred

:09:50. > :09:58.metres from the shore. Only last week, a council cleaning van became

:09:58. > :10:01.trapped in the rising waters there. Now, he has become quite a talking

:10:01. > :10:06.point in his home town of Yeovil since being featured on a national

:10:06. > :10:11.TV documentary. Ken Andre is the martial arts expert who dresses in

:10:11. > :10:16.Ninja robes to patrol the streets of the town by day and night.

:10:16. > :10:20.Reaction to what he does has been mixed. So Clinton Rogers has been

:10:20. > :10:30.out on the streets with him to see what drives the man who lives in

:10:30. > :10:30.

:10:30. > :10:33.the shadows. I go out there, I move in the

:10:33. > :10:38.shadows and help people. A warrior for just causes or a

:10:38. > :10:42.vigilante? Meet Shadow. You may not even have seen him, but he has been

:10:42. > :10:47.lurking in the shadows of Yeovil for the last six years. He says he

:10:47. > :10:54.is looking to keep the streets safer. Ken Andre is a 33-year-old

:10:54. > :11:00.father of two. By day, a security guard. Being a Ninja is his hobby,

:11:00. > :11:06.his passion. But what does his wife make of it? It is really brave to

:11:06. > :11:15.be out there in his kit, doing what he does. You don't think it is a

:11:15. > :11:19.bit odd? No. I would not be with him if I thought he was Bob! -- odd.

:11:19. > :11:22.It is not just night-time that Ken assumes the role of Ninja Shadow.

:11:22. > :11:32.During the day, he can frequently be found patrolling areas where he

:11:32. > :11:32.

:11:32. > :11:41.thinks trouble may flare. And there have been confrontations. And you

:11:41. > :11:47.stepped in? I got as close as I can and gave a quick growl and as they

:11:47. > :11:50.stood up I said, move on. Today, by chance, we came across the more

:11:50. > :11:58.established law enforcers, who wanted to check what they thought

:11:58. > :12:03.might be a Samurai sword. In fact, it is a stick made entirely of foam.

:12:03. > :12:08.What do you make of this? It is quite unusual. Is it the right

:12:08. > :12:11.thing to do? I don't see any harm in it, he was not breaking the law.

:12:11. > :12:15.Mind you, the formal police view is they would prefer you to leave it

:12:15. > :12:21.to them. And while some members of the public have clearly applauded

:12:21. > :12:25.what Ken is doing, others are a little suspicious. I looked at

:12:25. > :12:28.anybody with a samurai sword with a bit of suspicion! But make no

:12:28. > :12:30.mistake - Ken believes he is providing an important public

:12:30. > :12:39.service, breaking up trouble where it happens, calling the police

:12:39. > :12:44.where necessary. There will be people saying, you are a vigilante,

:12:44. > :12:48.it is wrong, back off? I am not a vigilante, I am not looking for

:12:48. > :12:53.crime. If I see someone getting beaten up in the street, I will not

:12:53. > :13:03.walk on by. And with that in mind, Shadow will be back on the streets

:13:03. > :13:04.

:13:04. > :13:10.In sport tonight, Cheltenham Town prepare to face their former

:13:10. > :13:17.striker as he returns with his new club. Can Somerset's cricketers

:13:17. > :13:21.bring home the Twenty20 Cup? Twice in the last two years, Somerset

:13:21. > :13:26.have battled their way to the finals, only to lose out, first to

:13:26. > :13:31.Sussex and then to Hampshire. Tomorrow, it is finals day at

:13:31. > :13:35.Edgbaston in Birmingham. The semi- finals and the final in a single

:13:35. > :13:44.day, weather permitting. Somerset are up against Hampshire in the

:13:44. > :13:49.second semi-final. Cannot wait, mate. Relaxed and ready for another

:13:49. > :13:56.crack at the final state. This talented squad have not yet won a

:13:56. > :14:03.terrific. But there is not talk of revenge, just getting it white.

:14:03. > :14:08.have played consistently good cricket. -- just getting it right.

:14:08. > :14:14.We have got pivotal moments in games that can turn events. This is

:14:14. > :14:17.massive for the club and it would be fitting to get a first trophy.

:14:17. > :14:20.They were runners up in all three competitions last year.

:14:20. > :14:25.Impressively, they picked themselves up from that heartbreak

:14:25. > :14:32.to be in the hunt for the treble again. A lot of people do not think

:14:32. > :14:36.that we can win the three competitions but if we keep giving

:14:37. > :14:41.us the opportunities and working hard, it can happen bus-stop it is

:14:41. > :14:47.like winning every game you play. - -. It is like winning every game

:14:47. > :14:52.you play. This is the best Somerset team since the days of Botham,

:14:52. > :14:59.Richards and Garner. That team was captained by Brian Rose, now on the

:14:59. > :15:05.committee. I had many people on the day that could win in my team and

:15:05. > :15:11.could do that in finals. That is what we have got to find. They have

:15:11. > :15:15.got to get into the final and win. Tomorrow's match will be

:15:15. > :15:19.psychologically crucial in the remaining competitions. Victory

:15:19. > :15:25.will take the pressure of but losing and they would just be a

:15:25. > :15:31.human Cynthia what happened last year. -- to earthier what happened

:15:31. > :15:36.last year happening again. Two Somerset players have been included

:15:36. > :15:40.in the England squad. Craig Kieswetter is in the one-day

:15:40. > :15:47.international squad. Joss Butler, another wicketkeeper-batsman joins

:15:47. > :15:51.him in the squad for the Twenty20 International next Wednesday. Last

:15:51. > :15:56.season, he was the darling of the Cheltenham supporters but tomorrow,

:15:56. > :16:01.West Thomas returns to Whaddon Road with his new club. He now plays for

:16:01. > :16:05.Crawley Town and with wealthy backers they are favourites to take

:16:05. > :16:15.the title. Cheltenham are gearing up for a considerable challenge

:16:15. > :16:19.

:16:19. > :16:25.from Crawley and especially with He was fantastic for his club last

:16:25. > :16:29.season but I would like to think it we can give him a game. He had

:16:29. > :16:37.never played so many games last season. He had a great opportunity

:16:37. > :16:42.to score goals. But to be fair, he took it. He was certainly the jewel

:16:42. > :16:48.in the crown of last season. It was highly impressive, 19 goals. Red

:16:48. > :16:55.alerts to repel him tomorrow. a good goal scorer and a good

:16:55. > :17:02.finisher. We will keep him quiet on Saturday it. You can keep him quiet

:17:02. > :17:07.for 80 minutes and then he can score. You have got to concentrate

:17:07. > :17:11.for the full match. I am looking forward to the game. Replacing him

:17:11. > :17:18.is not easy. The new guard is up and running with a couple of goals

:17:18. > :17:26.last week but neo- obvious pressure. I will put pressure on myself to

:17:26. > :17:33.score goals. I pride myself on that. If I can continue to do that, that

:17:33. > :17:37.will be good. Do you set targets? Not really. I have never done that.

:17:37. > :17:42.You can set targets if you want but that does not mean you will get

:17:42. > :17:49.that target. I just see what I have got at the end of the season and go

:17:49. > :17:55.with that. Crawley are top of the table and have got a lot more

:17:55. > :18:01.firepower than that. But if they come out of that game intact,

:18:01. > :18:05.Cheltenham can send out a big message to the rest of the table.

:18:05. > :18:10.The Cheltenham match is just one of the matches this weekend. Details

:18:10. > :18:15.of all the matches are coming up now. Bristol City played Doncaster

:18:15. > :18:20.it. Doncaster have been beaten in all four games so far. It is a must

:18:20. > :18:24.win match for Bristol City. They must improve on a poor performance

:18:25. > :18:29.against Swindon. Swindon will be hoping to build on that performance

:18:29. > :18:33.when they play against Shrewsbury. The rugby season starts next

:18:33. > :18:38.weekend but all the main teams are in action tonight. Gloucester take

:18:39. > :18:42.on Russia ahead of the World Cup campaign. This is a testimonial

:18:47. > :18:52.close enough, you have just got time to get down there. The Culture

:21:18. > :21:23.being staged for be first time since 2009. The organisers said it

:21:23. > :21:29.brought 75,000 visitors to Gloucester and brought 2 million

:21:29. > :21:35.to the local economy last time. Slowly but surely and watched every

:21:35. > :21:43.inch of the way, this flotilla headed to the town. The centrepiece

:21:43. > :21:50.of the weekend festival. It is very interesting, gas. We can hear

:21:50. > :21:55.people talking as they travel by it. It is lovely. It is going back to a

:21:55. > :22:01.bygone age. In it is marvellous for the area to bring them into

:22:01. > :22:07.Gloucester, I think. It is a great attraction. It is very busy and we

:22:07. > :22:12.have only just started. Tomorrow it will be good. The organisers say it

:22:12. > :22:18.shines a spotlight, welcome on the town. This was the last time the

:22:18. > :22:24.festival took place. The year the Gloucester Quays outlet was opened

:22:24. > :22:29.by Gok Wan. He is not present this year. But the people in charge

:22:29. > :22:38.think it will be successful even without a make a buck. It was very

:22:38. > :22:43.popular in 2007 it. -- even without a makeover. It was great opening

:22:43. > :22:49.this attraction. I bet we will get a good number of people this time

:22:49. > :22:53.as well. That was definitely true today. But is it the case for the

:22:53. > :23:01.rest of the weekend? That might be down to the great British unknown,

:23:01. > :23:04.the weather. That is out of the organiser's hands. But they can

:23:04. > :23:10.control the events they hope will once again bring thousands of

:23:10. > :23:15.people to the docks in Gloucester. One of the people responsible for

:23:15. > :23:21.that is Andrew. He is wearing the official colours of the Tall Ships

:23:21. > :23:26.testable. What can we expect? ships is a good thing to start with

:23:27. > :23:32.but also music and high rents and art and craft and funfairs. All the

:23:32. > :23:39.things we would expect. The council has had to put money into the event

:23:39. > :23:44.to make certain it happens. As the funding been secured? We are

:23:44. > :23:49.confident because it is a much loved event. We have got local

:23:49. > :23:59.businesses that put lead in this event. We will be back in business.

:23:59. > :23:59.

:23:59. > :24:07.-- that believe in this event. is one of the main ships, Irene.

:24:07. > :24:13.Tell us about it. How does this narrow canal work? I and from

:24:13. > :24:17.Ireland and we have got smaller canals. It is a bit daunting. The

:24:17. > :24:24.scenery was gorgeous. Lovely weather at the time had it was very

:24:24. > :24:31.nice. The Tall Ships testable his arm across the whole weekend. --

:24:31. > :24:35.the Tall Ships testable. -- the festival is on the whole weekend.

:24:35. > :24:44.We hope it will go well. Now the We hope it will go well. Now the

:24:45. > :24:51.weather. We are pretty much in the same boat with sunshine and showers.

:24:51. > :24:56.It will get better by Bank Holiday Monday. This is the headline,

:24:56. > :25:05.reigned one minute and showers the next. A fairly breezy spell of

:25:05. > :25:12.weather. Temperatures getting up to 19. Pressure across the North Sea.

:25:12. > :25:19.We have got an unsettled pattern. I pressure is starting to come across

:25:19. > :25:27.from the West. -- pressure. Wind getting lighter and we hope we will

:25:27. > :25:32.get a reasonable amount of sunshine. We have had a lot of rain. This has

:25:32. > :25:37.been speeding across the region and barely moving towards the east.

:25:37. > :25:42.Parts of Bristol and Somerset will be affected. It will take a while

:25:42. > :25:49.for this to disappear. A bit of thunder as well. These have been

:25:49. > :25:56.recorded by the Met Office. These are coming across some parts of

:25:56. > :26:03.West Gloucestershire. We cannot rule them out anywhere. We will

:26:03. > :26:08.have more heavy downpours tonight. That will gradually disappear

:26:08. > :26:13.towards the east and gradually reduced in intensity. Clear spells,

:26:13. > :26:23.particularly away from the coast. Some showers across West Somerset.

:26:23. > :26:30.But it will essentially be dry. Temperatures between 12 and 10. It

:26:30. > :26:37.is comparatively cold tonight. Tomorrow, dry and bright. Wind and

:26:37. > :26:45.showers getting going early. This will affect parts of Somerset and

:26:45. > :26:53.Gloucestershire. A little bit in between. The mountains tend to sake

:26:53. > :27:00.some of the showers up. A bit of rain in Edgbaston for the cricket.

:27:00. > :27:08.This is coming through the Bristol Channel. That will still feed

:27:09. > :27:15.across into parts of North Somerset, Bristol and Bath. Temperatures at

:27:16. > :27:22.17 and 18. Not looking bad in the Forest of Dean. That event is at

:27:22. > :27:28.6:30pm tomorrow it. Showers on Sunday. Broadly similar to Saturday

:27:28. > :27:35.Sunday. Broadly similar to Saturday but it will be better on Monday.
