:00:17. > :00:20.Hello and welcome to BBC Points West. In the headlines tonight: The

:00:20. > :00:22.man accused of murdering Jo Yeates says he can't believe he killed her.

:00:22. > :00:26.Giving evidence today, Vincent Tabak apologised for putting Jo's

:00:26. > :00:30.parents through hell. And as the media interest grows - we report on

:00:30. > :00:33.reaction to the trial back in Holland. Also tonight: Salute to

:00:33. > :00:38.the Sappers. Wiltshire based engineers receive campaign medals

:00:38. > :00:41.for their service on the front line. Trying to grow your business? The

:00:41. > :00:46.largest lorry ever allowed on our roads gets a mixed reaction in

:00:46. > :00:56.Gloucester. And tribute to the patron saint of vegetarians - why

:00:56. > :00:59.

:00:59. > :01:02.villagers paid thousands for a Good evening. First tonight,

:01:02. > :01:06.Vincent Tabak has apologised for putting Joanna Yeates' family

:01:06. > :01:09.through hell. Giving evidence for the first time at Bristol Crown

:01:09. > :01:13.Court, he was at times tearful, saying his actions will haunt him

:01:13. > :01:16.for the rest of his life, no matter what sentence he gets. Mr Tabak is

:01:16. > :01:18.accused of murdering Miss Yeates in her flat in Clifton, just before

:01:18. > :01:26.Christmas. Our home affairs correspondent, Steve Brodie reports

:01:26. > :01:29.now on another dramatic day in court. With Jo's family and her

:01:29. > :01:32.boyfriend Greg sitting only feet from him in the public gallery,

:01:32. > :01:39.Vincent Tabak told a packed and silent court how he killed her, but

:01:39. > :01:42.how he never meant to. The 33-year- old Dutch engineer said he was

:01:42. > :01:48.walking past Jo's kitchen window on the evening of Friday December 17th

:01:48. > :01:51.when she invited him in and offered him a drink. He claimed they had a

:01:51. > :01:56.conversation which he misinterpreted as being flirtatious.

:01:56. > :02:00.He admitted making a pass at her and trying to kiss her. But she

:02:00. > :02:04.screamed and he put his hand over her mouth and then at her throat to

:02:04. > :02:07.quieten her. Defence barrister William Clegg asked Tabak to stand

:02:07. > :02:13.in the witness box with his eyes closed and remember how long he

:02:13. > :02:19.kept his hand there. There was silence until Tabak said "Now". Mr

:02:19. > :02:22.Clegg said to the judge, "Fifteen seconds, my lord." Tabak told the

:02:22. > :02:26.court that after killing Jo Yeates he panicked. He described how he

:02:26. > :02:30.took her body from the kitchen and carried it into the bedroom. He

:02:30. > :02:34.then said how he walked back to his flat at the rear of this building.

:02:34. > :02:37.He then returned to Jo's flat and began to carry her back to his flat

:02:37. > :02:40.but she was too heavy and he put her down - before eventually

:02:40. > :02:45.managing to carry her to his bedroom. Later he put the body

:02:45. > :02:49.inside a bicycle bag and then into the boot of his car. He then drove

:02:49. > :02:52.to Asda in Bedminster with her body in the boot. Tabak wept in the

:02:52. > :02:56.witness box when he talked about sending his girlfriend, Tanya, a

:02:56. > :02:59.text saying he was bored and couldn't wait to see her. After

:02:59. > :03:02.leaving the supermarket he drove home. Later he went out to Longwood

:03:02. > :03:06.Lane near Long Ashton, where he dumped her body, covering it in

:03:06. > :03:10.leaves. He then broke down again and told the court "I'm so sorry

:03:10. > :03:14.for doing that. I put Jo's parents and Greg through a week of hell. I

:03:14. > :03:17.still cannot believe I did that." Cross examining Vincent Tabak,

:03:17. > :03:25.Nigel Likely QC told him 2 You are calcuilating dishonest and

:03:25. > :03:29.manipulative" Tabak agreed he was. Mr Likely went on for the first

:03:29. > :03:35.time yesterday we heard that this case as a sexual element to it. We

:03:35. > :03:38.haerd how you wanted to kiss Mis Yeates. You were in fact of

:03:38. > :03:41.thinking of more than kissing and kissing-you were thinking of having

:03:41. > :03:43.sex with Joanna Yeates." Tabak replied "No, I wasn't". Tabak also

:03:43. > :03:48.apologised for incriminating his and Jo's landlord Christopher

:03:48. > :03:52.Jefferies. He'd told police that Mr Jefferies had moved his car on the

:03:52. > :03:54.night Jo went missing. The prosecution claimed that Tabak was

:03:54. > :04:03.detached and able to carry out the killing. Tabak himself repeatedly

:04:03. > :04:06.denied that he had ever planned her Media interest in the trial has

:04:06. > :04:13.been intense - with every tiny piece of detail appearing online

:04:13. > :04:15.via Twitter as soon as it's revealed in court. But what of the

:04:15. > :04:25.coverage in Vincent Tabak's homeland? Andrew Plant reports now

:04:25. > :04:32.

:04:32. > :04:37.on how the Dutch media have been following the case. Over in Vincent

:04:37. > :04:40.Tabak's homeland, it has been a different story. Die Telegraaf is

:04:40. > :04:44.Hollands largest morning paper - But even here you have to look hard

:04:44. > :04:47.to find the latest on the Tabak trial. And as the British media

:04:47. > :04:57.supplies the latest details to its outlets, Dutch journalists are very

:04:57. > :04:57.

:04:57. > :05:07.much the minority. The interest has faded away. It has been the inside

:05:07. > :05:12.

:05:12. > :05:15.pages. It is quite small. It is tucked away on page seven or eight.

:05:15. > :05:19.Vincent Tabak's picture familiar to almost everyone here. In Holland

:05:19. > :05:25.that picture is obscured - and he's known only as Vincent T. A courtesy

:05:25. > :05:34.they say to a man innocent until proven guilty. Vincent Tabak has

:05:34. > :05:40.already pleaded guilty to killing Jo Yeates. Breaking news story at

:05:40. > :05:43.all. Despite it is not a breaking news story at all. What he disputes

:05:43. > :05:46.is that it was on purpose - the difference between manslaughter and

:05:46. > :05:56.murder. A difference it seems that, in Holland at least, is keeping

:05:56. > :05:59.Tabak's name and face out of the headlines. So, continued interest

:05:59. > :06:02.in this case both here in the West and abroad. Our Home Affairs

:06:02. > :06:09.Correspondent Steve Brodie is with me. Steve, clearly a key day today

:06:09. > :06:17.with Vincent Tabak in the witness box. What happens now? Tomorrow

:06:17. > :06:22.when the case resumes, Nigel Likely QC, the prosecution counsel, will

:06:22. > :06:26.continue his cross-examination of Vincent Tabak about points the

:06:26. > :06:31.defence have raised. After that, we expect to hear from a pathologist,

:06:31. > :06:37.who is the defence witness on medical matters. Onto Monday,

:06:37. > :06:45.another defence witness. On Tuesday, both legal teams will sum up Peps -

:06:45. > :06:51.- their respective cases and put their points to the jury. Then the

:06:51. > :06:56.judge will sum up the trial for the jury. He will point out bits of law

:06:56. > :07:06.that the jury may not understand. We expect... We are never quite

:07:06. > :07:14.sure with these big legal cases... We expect the jury to deliberate on

:07:14. > :07:17.Thursday morning. Acts of violence against British soldiers patrolling

:07:17. > :07:19.in Helmand Province in Afghanistan are down 45% this year. Theirs is

:07:19. > :07:22.still a very dangerous job of course, but it's hoped they're

:07:22. > :07:25.getting a better night's sleep, thanks to the work of a west

:07:25. > :07:28.country engineer regiment. The front line sappers have been

:07:28. > :07:32.upgrading remote patrol bases to make life off duty a little more

:07:32. > :07:36.luxurious. Scott Ellis reports. Recently returned - from a war zone

:07:36. > :07:46.that's slowly becoming less violent. Still though, a tough assignment

:07:46. > :07:47.

:07:47. > :07:53.for Tidworth's 22 Engineer Regiment. And the loved ones, left behind.

:07:53. > :07:56.was scary more than anything, but it is pretty hard to explain,

:07:56. > :08:00.because you are so worried about what they are doing. You have to be

:08:00. > :08:05.a strong person and you need to get on with your life and not have them

:08:05. > :08:12.worry about your life at home. As long as he backed them up, it is

:08:12. > :08:15.fine. It takes a strong person to wait for them. Today, 57 Sappers

:08:15. > :08:17.each received this camapign medal. In Afghanistan, these military

:08:17. > :08:19.engineers have been rebuilding British patrol bases. Many were

:08:19. > :08:25.just remote desert outposts. But they now have water, electricity

:08:25. > :08:30.and bomb proof defences. When the guys come back of their patrols,

:08:30. > :08:39.they can get clean, they can rest properly, and it makes them a bit

:08:39. > :08:42.more normal. You can mentally unwind. Their work upgrading

:08:42. > :08:45.British bases also looks to the future. The British combat role in

:08:45. > :08:54.Afghanistan ends in 2015. As we leave the bases, so Afghan soldiers

:08:54. > :08:59.will move in. The focus on transition, that does not mean just

:08:59. > :09:03.handing over to Afghan National soldiers, sovereign soldiers, it is

:09:03. > :09:05.also creating the infrastructure that they want. As the Sappers

:09:05. > :09:08.received their Afghan medals, US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton

:09:09. > :09:14.arrived in Kabul with a tough message for Pakistan - to cut links

:09:14. > :09:20.with militant groups. And to encourage the Taliban to enter the

:09:20. > :09:30.non-violent politcal process in Afghanistan. Will they? Well, 22

:09:30. > :09:33.

:09:33. > :09:36.will find out, when they return to Helmand in 2013. It's Chris and

:09:36. > :09:39.Amanda with your local news tonight. It's good to have you along. Coming

:09:39. > :09:49.up: Will City flower under their new Scottish Manager? Derek McInnes

:09:49. > :09:52.

:09:52. > :09:58.meets his new braves. We have pneumatic cars, electric cars and

:09:58. > :10:01.also a rocky car. Wiltshire Police have been given more time to

:10:01. > :10:07.question three people in connection with the murder of a man near

:10:07. > :10:12.Semley. Lennie Adams, who was 43, was found on Saturday. He'd been

:10:12. > :10:15.buried in a shallow grave. Today his family said they would

:10:15. > :10:22.certainly miss him as a father, brother, uncle and truly unique

:10:22. > :10:25.friend to many. Two men and a woman are still being held. Two men have

:10:26. > :10:28.been sent to prison for their part in organised dog fighting. Ian

:10:28. > :10:31.Draper from Burford in Oxfordshire was sentenced to twenty weeks while

:10:31. > :10:34.his son Danny Draper received a twelve week term. Both men pleaded

:10:35. > :10:37.guilty to the charges last month following a raid on a house in

:10:37. > :10:46.Swindon where Danny Draper was living at the time. They've also

:10:46. > :10:49.been banned from keeping dogs. A haulage company in Gloucester's

:10:49. > :10:52.been showing off its new lorry today. But this is no ordinary HGV,

:10:52. > :10:55.it's one of the biggest articulated vehicles in the country. Wincanton

:10:55. > :10:58.Logistics claims it weighs the same as its current lorries and that it

:10:58. > :11:08.will reduce emissions. But its size hasn't gone down well in one

:11:08. > :11:12.

:11:12. > :11:15.Gloucestershire town. Chris James reports. It has 16 wheels and it's

:11:15. > :11:17.twice the length of two double decker buses. This is the UK's

:11:17. > :11:26.largest articulated lorry, and it's based here near Gloucester, and

:11:26. > :11:31.it's coming to a road near you. At the moment, this is the biggest

:11:31. > :11:38.lorry on our roads. From June next year, we will start seeing some of

:11:38. > :11:45.these. It will be two metres longer, added will carry an extra 17,000

:11:45. > :11:52.aspirin boxes or 10,000 Patrick's bottles or 40 extra plasma TV's.

:11:52. > :11:59.She did not wait more as well? is carrying more. It is for more

:11:59. > :12:02.palettes, that is above the 26 we have now. -- it is four more

:12:02. > :12:10.palates. Wincanton claims this eco- trailer will save the UK transport

:12:10. > :12:13.industry 400 million a year. This is Tetbury. A Gloucestershire town,

:12:13. > :12:17.where local people say they're plagued daily by HGV's. The size of

:12:17. > :12:23.this new 44-tonner is concerning some. That is just a nightmare!

:12:23. > :12:30.Disgusting! It is incredible! If they only used at the trains, don't

:12:30. > :12:35.get me started! Too big for any of the British roads. Except possibly

:12:35. > :12:39.on the motorway. That is ridiculous. For small streets like this, it

:12:39. > :12:42.couldn't be done. To run one of these lorries on the road, you'll

:12:42. > :12:44.need a special license because they're so big. Wincanton is hoping

:12:44. > :12:47.to get several hundred. The Department for Transport says

:12:47. > :12:56.they're safe, and plans to allow nearly 2,000 of them on our roads

:12:56. > :12:59.from next year. On yesterday's programme you may have seen our

:12:59. > :13:03.story about the lorry that got stuck in Bruton in Somerset. Well,

:13:03. > :13:10.we've just been sent these pictures from Bath where a van tried - but

:13:10. > :13:12.didn't quite make it underneath a railway bridge. People passing on

:13:12. > :13:16.Jew's Lane, just off the Lower Bristol Road, saw the vehicle

:13:16. > :13:25.wedged in under the arch at about 4 o'clock this afternoon. The police

:13:25. > :13:28.tell us the road is now clear. Filton Airfield made a healthy

:13:28. > :13:31.profit last year despite its owners saying it's not financially viable.

:13:31. > :13:34.BAE Systems announced earlier this year that it intends to close the

:13:34. > :13:38.airfield in 2012, but the BBC's seen accounts showing the site made

:13:38. > :13:41.one point three million pounds in 2010. Campaigners and opposition

:13:41. > :13:51.councillors say it shows the airfield can be marketed as a going

:13:51. > :13:56.

:13:56. > :14:01.concern, rather than being turned into houses. BAE Systems have

:14:01. > :14:07.convinced the public and local MPs that this has been losing 3

:14:07. > :14:10.million each year, but the accounts show it has not. This airfield,

:14:10. > :14:17.with proper then be -- with proper marketing but has not been carried

:14:17. > :14:23.out by BAE Systems, could be a Bible and profitable airfield. -- a

:14:23. > :14:26.viable. BAE says despite last year's profit, the runway has been

:14:26. > :14:30.operating at a loss for the previous nine years and the profits

:14:30. > :14:32.aren't sustainable long-term. Organisers of a beauty pageant in

:14:32. > :14:34.South Korea say they're investigating allegations of sexual

:14:34. > :14:37.harassment made by a Bristol beauty queen. Nineteen-year old Amy

:14:37. > :14:40.Willerton, who's the former Miss Bristol and Miss Bath, took part in

:14:40. > :14:43.the Miss Asia Pacific World Competition earlier this month. She

:14:43. > :14:46.says she left early for her own safety. Organisers reject claims

:14:46. > :14:56.the girls weren't fed properly, but say there will be an investigation

:14:56. > :14:59.

:14:59. > :15:05.into whether they were asked for sexual favours in return for votes.

:15:05. > :15:12.A Bristol school opened today, two years after losing the head teacher.

:15:12. > :15:17.This man was 48 when he died last year. Since then, the school has

:15:17. > :15:22.pressed ahead with the expansion, with singing and celebrity guests

:15:22. > :15:26.to open the facilities in style. We have had two years since the

:15:26. > :15:32.original planning was put in for the school. We put up with a lot of

:15:33. > :15:38.mess. It has always been a brilliant school here, and it is

:15:38. > :15:42.great we have the disease to match, and we thank the authority. It used

:15:43. > :15:46.to be that all you needed to fix a car was a spanner and an owner's

:15:46. > :15:48.manual - these days the average mechanic needs to be an expert in

:15:48. > :15:51.computing and electronics as well as mechanical engineering. But now

:15:51. > :15:54.there's a little extra help for the mechanics of tomorrow, as a new

:15:54. > :16:04.training centre for apprentices in automotive engineering opened in

:16:04. > :16:08.Bristol. Here's Jules Hyam. It is a name that has been synonymous with

:16:08. > :16:14.engineering, particularly automobiles and aircraft. Bristol

:16:14. > :16:17.is a city with a heritage of engineering achievements. Bristol

:16:17. > :16:26.has an engineering past, but here in Bedminster, they are trying to

:16:26. > :16:34.create the engineers of the future. The Academy opened a map talk of

:16:34. > :16:39.engineering firsts. There is a definite need for skilled people.

:16:39. > :16:43.The motor industry is very sophisticated. Cars, trucks and

:16:43. > :16:50.buses and commuter -- computer networks on there. There is a need

:16:50. > :16:57.for high quality -- high quality skills. Whether it is buses like

:16:57. > :17:07.this want, or military does -- vehicles, or because it run a

:17:07. > :17:10.

:17:10. > :17:14.We take part in the Green Power Challenge, which is an engineering

:17:14. > :17:19.challenge for UK each schools. Engineering is not a big part of

:17:19. > :17:24.the curriculum, so a centre like this is encouraging the next

:17:24. > :17:30.generations of engineers. It is good to promote science and

:17:30. > :17:36.engineering. It allowed -- it allows us to learn things that we

:17:36. > :17:46.do not learnt at school. The gains of more experienced. Plenty here to

:17:46. > :17:51.

:17:51. > :17:56.enthuse young minds. We now have 2,400 schools learning But found.

:17:57. > :18:00.There is or world record held by the Joseph Leckie school. It is

:18:00. > :18:05.essential thing. We have to get the stipulating going. Once he had the

:18:05. > :18:11.stimulation going, the education follows. That is where the Academy

:18:11. > :18:20.helped. They will be aiming to develop the very best of Bristol

:18:20. > :18:22.engineering. A South West MEP has been honoured today at a ceremony

:18:22. > :18:25.at Windsor Castle. Graham Watson, from Langport in Somerset, received

:18:25. > :18:28.his knighthood from the Princess Royal at a formal investiture.

:18:28. > :18:38.Despite being a staunch republican, Sir Graham said he was happy to

:18:38. > :18:39.

:18:39. > :18:42.accept the honour for his public and political service. In sport,

:18:42. > :18:46.Bristol City's new manager met his new players for the first time

:18:46. > :18:49.today and took his first training session. He's on a tight schedule -

:18:49. > :18:52.his opening game in charge is on Sunday at home to Birmingham City.

:18:52. > :18:55.Earlier today though he faced his first press conference as the City

:18:55. > :19:05.boss and said he was taking over at a club with great potential. David

:19:05. > :19:05.

:19:06. > :19:08.Passmore's report contains flash photography from the start. The aim

:19:08. > :19:11.is simple. Start winning games, avoid relegation, and turn City

:19:11. > :19:15.back into a club capable of challenging for promotion to the

:19:15. > :19:19.Premier League. Achieving that will take all of the young manager's

:19:19. > :19:29.skill. He's signed a two-and-a-half year contract and knows he's taking

:19:29. > :19:35.over a club with potential. There's a lot here to be built on. The club

:19:35. > :19:39.is so similar size to a lot of clubs in the Championship. People

:19:39. > :19:44.say it is a giant with potential, and we have seen clubs of similar

:19:44. > :19:47.size get to the Premier League. We have a lot of potential here.

:19:47. > :19:52.McInnes brings an impressive track record from St Johnstone and his

:19:52. > :19:57.assistant Tony Docherty. He has a fantastic way with the players. He

:19:57. > :20:02.will work closely with the players, but his biggest asset is a

:20:02. > :20:06.fantastic work ethic. He was served Bristol City well. Which leaves

:20:06. > :20:10.former assistant manager Steve Wigley in limbo. He is in contract

:20:10. > :20:14.but will be waiting to see if he and the new manager can establish a

:20:14. > :20:20.good working relationship. Steve is under contract. He is an

:20:20. > :20:26.outstanding coach, and I expect with his experience of English

:20:26. > :20:29.football, he will work with Derek and Tony at this club. But for

:20:29. > :20:34.McInnes the pressing issue is Sunday's game and getting to know

:20:34. > :20:38.his squad. You have to get a system of play that suits us. We will

:20:38. > :20:44.Valley everybody. Everyone will get a chance to impress. I think that

:20:44. > :20:49.is only right. I look forward to getting started with them. Derek

:20:49. > :20:56.McInnes has a reputation of being hard but fair. Bristol City had to

:20:56. > :21:01.pay quite a bit of compensation for him, but that does mean they are
