:00:15. > :00:19.Good evening and welcome to BBC Points West. Our headlines tonight:

:00:19. > :00:23.The Gas fitter accused of manslaughter. He denies doing a

:00:23. > :00:27.botch job resulting in the death of a young woman.

:00:27. > :00:33.The faulty breast implants scandal - concerns the effects could be

:00:33. > :00:38.worse than first thought. I cannot walk very far. My life is a

:00:38. > :00:42.nightmare. The cheese factory that was hit by

:00:42. > :00:47.a fire pulls out of Somerset. Sacked workers are left with a sour

:00:47. > :00:55.taste. And, down boy. We join the husky

:00:55. > :01:01.races in the Forest of Dean. Good evening. A gas fitter has

:01:01. > :01:05.denied killing a young woman from Bath by doing a botch job on a

:01:05. > :01:10.boiler. Andrew Hartley fitted new equipment at Zoe Anderson's home.

:01:10. > :01:14.Two weeks later she was dead. She had been overcome by carbon

:01:14. > :01:18.monoxide fumes. Today, Mr Hartley admitted he had not finished the

:01:18. > :01:23.work as he should have but denied manslaughter by gross negligence.

:01:23. > :01:27.Andrew Plant was in court. Zoe Anderson was just 24 years old,

:01:27. > :01:32.the daughter of a millionaire magazine publisher. During

:01:32. > :01:36.Christmas 2010 she was overcome by toxic fumes in the shower room of

:01:36. > :01:41.her home in Bath. Less than two weeks before she died, local

:01:41. > :01:45.plumber and gas fitter Andrew Hartley had fitted a new boiler in

:01:45. > :01:50.the roof of the garage here at the large family home. Today, he

:01:50. > :01:55.arrived at Bristol Crown Court to face a charge of manslaughter. He

:01:55. > :01:59.rushed the job, say the prosecution, and his negligent work led to the

:01:59. > :02:03.death of Zoe Anderson. The prosecution accuse Andrew hardly of

:02:03. > :02:09.not having his mind on the job on that December day. They said he

:02:09. > :02:13.never finished fitting the boiler and left a crucial flue pipe

:02:13. > :02:18.unconnected which caused Zoe Anderson's showroom to fill up with

:02:18. > :02:21.deadly carbon monoxide. Early at this trial, an independent gas

:02:21. > :02:26.expert called by the prosecution told the court that a carbon

:02:26. > :02:32.monoxide detector would sound an alarm when levels reached 35 parts

:02:32. > :02:35.per million. Levels are dangerous at 100. But after running the

:02:35. > :02:40.boiler for one hour in Zoe Anderson's shower room, levels

:02:40. > :02:44.would have reached 750 parts per million. Andrew Hardie admitted

:02:44. > :02:49.today that when he connected the flue, the pipe that should carry

:02:49. > :02:54.away harmful gases, he had not followed correct procedure. Screws

:02:54. > :02:59.were missing in several places. But he denies leaving a gap in the

:02:59. > :03:04.fitting or that the work he did was in any way dangerous. Carbon

:03:04. > :03:08.monoxide poisoning kills more than 50 people a year in the UK. Next

:03:08. > :03:15.week at Bristol Crown Court, a jury will decide whether Zoe Anderson's

:03:15. > :03:19.death could have been avoided. A leading surgeon in the West is

:03:19. > :03:24.calling for more urgent investigations into the effects of

:03:24. > :03:28.faulty breast implants. Nigel Mercer from Frenchay Hospital says

:03:29. > :03:32.it is common for women who have had leaking PIP implants to complain of

:03:32. > :03:38.problems with their immune system. Matthew Hill has been talking to

:03:38. > :03:43.some of them. This is a PIP implant. It was taken

:03:43. > :03:47.out five weeks ago. Steffy Meissner paid thousands of pounds to have

:03:48. > :03:51.her faulty PIP implants removed and replaced. She believes her health

:03:51. > :03:59.was suffering because of the industrial silicon leaking into her

:03:59. > :04:03.body. My glands here were also fallen. I would go away for a

:04:03. > :04:08.couple of days, come back... her friend Tina from Bridgwater has

:04:08. > :04:11.had problems as well. She has developed diseases of her immune

:04:11. > :04:15.system including chronic fatigue syndrome. There is no absolute

:04:15. > :04:20.proof but she is convinced her bad health is linked to the faulty

:04:21. > :04:26.implants she has paid thousands for. I cannot walk free far. My life is

:04:27. > :04:29.a nightmare. It has come to a stop at the minute. The two women met on

:04:29. > :04:33.the social network site which features the counts of hundreds of

:04:33. > :04:38.others who have claimed their health has suffered. At the moment

:04:38. > :04:44.we are seeing an increase in women who have reported other systems --

:04:44. > :04:47.symptoms, neuralgia, pain in muscle joints. We know the implants have

:04:47. > :04:52.things including the fire accelerate but we do not know what

:04:52. > :04:57.the effect is on the body. That needs testing her urgently. What

:04:57. > :05:01.evidence is there about the health effects of PIP implants? No link

:05:01. > :05:04.with cancer has been found but a report published by a group of

:05:04. > :05:08.European experts has raised questions about other health

:05:08. > :05:13.problems. The silicone used was intended for mattresses and when

:05:13. > :05:18.mice were injected with it, a study found it caused irritancy. In

:05:18. > :05:22.humans, this could manifest itself as saw or enlarged lymph nodes or

:05:22. > :05:28.sensation in the breast. Other implants which Hughes Medical

:05:28. > :05:33.silicone were found to have no effect. Other implants which used

:05:33. > :05:38.medical silicone were found to have no effect. It says the implications

:05:38. > :05:43.for women is uncertain. Further investigation is required.

:05:43. > :05:48.Something Tina Whatley's MP also wants to see. When we have so many

:05:48. > :05:54.women with similar symptoms, various versions of NT, people with

:05:54. > :05:58.gynaecological problems, we should be asking what has gone wrong. --

:05:58. > :06:02.versions of M E. Tina Whatley is due to have her implants removed

:06:02. > :06:09.next week and hopes that will improve her health but fears the

:06:09. > :06:12.damage may already have been done. Matthew is here with us now. This

:06:12. > :06:17.is obviously very worrying for women watching this tonight but how

:06:17. > :06:25.do they know if they have got a problem? Over the past ten years

:06:25. > :06:30.there have been 40,000 women with PIP implants. Of those, they think,

:06:30. > :06:34.the regulatory body thinks around 500 have had an adverse reactions

:06:34. > :06:37.reported by their GPs. The problem is they have not broken down into

:06:37. > :06:42.which category as those health problems are and that is something

:06:43. > :06:46.which the end HR8 are adding further work on. What happens now?

:06:46. > :06:51.If women are worried, if they have reached the implants, they will

:06:51. > :06:54.have them removed by the NHS. If they are worried and the government

:06:55. > :06:59.says in the long term they will get them removed eventually. So far we

:06:59. > :07:04.have only had a dozen women who have had them removed on the NHS.

:07:04. > :07:09.Thank you. On the pellet -- on Sunday Politics

:07:09. > :07:14.we will look at whether there needs to be more regulation of this

:07:14. > :07:17.multi-billion-pound industry. In other news, the man accused of

:07:17. > :07:23.murdering a Thornbury Becker has made a brief appearance before a

:07:23. > :07:27.High Court judge. -- a Thornbury vicar. Stephen Farrell is accused

:07:27. > :07:31.of murdering John Suddards and retired teacher Betty Yates. He

:07:31. > :07:36.appeared by video link and spoke only to confirm his name.

:07:36. > :07:40.Business leaders in Wincanton in Somerset say it will be hard to

:07:40. > :07:46.replace jobs lost when one of the town's biggest employers relocates

:07:46. > :07:51.to Staffordshire. More than 150 local jobs are to go next week. The

:07:51. > :07:55.company, Adams Foods, was hit by a major fire.

:07:55. > :08:01.Leaving their production shift this afternoon and for many, it was time

:08:01. > :08:07.for emotional goodbyes. The mood here is understandably downbeat.

:08:07. > :08:11.knew it was coming. Now it is nearly here, it is sad times. I

:08:11. > :08:17.have worked here for 12 years. Gutted the place is going but time

:08:17. > :08:22.to move on, I suppose. Four it will be hard for everyone. Adams foods

:08:22. > :08:26.packs cheese here, the main brand, Pilgrims Choice Cheddar. It is

:08:26. > :08:31.winding down its Somerset operation. The majority of the work force will

:08:31. > :08:34.be gone by next Wednesday. The company was in the headlines last

:08:34. > :08:39.September when its cheese warehouse and everything inside it was

:08:39. > :08:43.destroyed by one of the biggest fires in Somerset for years. It was

:08:43. > :08:48.shortly after that that the company said it was considering relocating

:08:48. > :08:51.its packing business to a state of- the-art factory in Leek in

:08:51. > :08:54.Staffordshire. At the time they said the fire had been a

:08:55. > :08:59.contributory factor. Adams is one of the biggest

:08:59. > :09:04.companies in Wincanton. At its height, this place employed 180

:09:04. > :09:09.people. Most of the local jobs have now gone. Adams say this place will

:09:09. > :09:13.not shut completely. About 25 people will be kept on. Another 25

:09:13. > :09:18.have decided to move with the company to Staffordshire. Among

:09:18. > :09:23.them, Polish-born Karolina and her husband. If they give me a chance

:09:23. > :09:29.to keep my job then I will go there. I like changes so it is a new

:09:29. > :09:34.challenge for me. Inevitably, that means significantly fewer wage

:09:34. > :09:38.packets in Wincanton, a blow to a small town economy. Business

:09:38. > :09:42.leaders say the priority must be to attract new employers but they know

:09:42. > :09:47.that will not be easy. You are in the middle of a depression, not

:09:47. > :09:51.just the UK but Europe, worldwide, everyone is cutting back so there

:09:51. > :09:58.are few opportunities to bring business into town. As for the

:09:58. > :10:04.future of the site, the company tell us it is too soon to say.

:10:04. > :10:10.It is coming up to 20-7, we are live here on BBC One. We have

:10:10. > :10:13.Friday's Points West. Your weekend starts right here. The full

:10:13. > :10:18.forecast coming saying plus, pushing hard for promotion - we

:10:18. > :10:24.will be at the Memorial Stadium as Bristol Rugby try to inch closer to

:10:24. > :10:28.the Premiership. I feel tired just looking at that!

:10:28. > :10:33.We continue with more news. First, a school in south Gloucestershire

:10:33. > :10:38.had to be closed today after a suspicious fire. Crews were called

:10:38. > :10:40.to St Mary's Church of England Primary in Yate early this morning.

:10:40. > :10:45.Classrooms were damaged and an investigation has begun into the

:10:45. > :10:48.cause. All the effort that we put into making the school a better

:10:48. > :10:52.place for the children, all the effort the parents put into making

:10:53. > :10:57.the school experience valuable and things like this happen. It feels

:10:57. > :11:02.so disappointing. We were meant to be having our cake sale today and

:11:02. > :11:06.our cakes would have been going stale. My class was supposed to

:11:06. > :11:12.doer class assembly that we have been trying to rehearse all week

:11:12. > :11:15.and now we can't do it. It is like a big let-down. It is just annoying.

:11:15. > :11:19.The school will stay closed on Monday and Tuesday next week

:11:19. > :11:22.because of the damage caused by smoke.

:11:23. > :11:28.A young man says he has been attacked for parking in disabled

:11:29. > :11:33.spaces because other drivers do not think he looks unwell enough. Marc

:11:33. > :11:42.Pyle from Wilshere has a muscle- wasting disease but it does not

:11:42. > :11:46.show out with symptoms -- Wiltshire. Marc Pyle is 25 years old. He was

:11:46. > :11:51.diagnosed with muscular dystrophy aged just seven. He is able to walk

:11:51. > :11:57.but only slowly and for short periods. It is all right sometimes,

:11:57. > :12:02.depending on whether and staff but generally, I do find it quite hard.

:12:03. > :12:07.That is why I need a blue badge for disabled parking. But it is that

:12:07. > :12:11.blue badge which has made him the victim of what he sees as a hate

:12:11. > :12:14.crime. He uses it to park in disabled spaces like this one in

:12:14. > :12:19.Cricklade and has found himself on the wrong end of some very angry

:12:19. > :12:24.words. Verbally assaulting year and shouting at you, saying you're not

:12:24. > :12:28.disabled, why are you parking there? At other times, getting

:12:28. > :12:33.people trying to park their car in that space to stop you get into it

:12:33. > :12:37.or moving their car to make it hard for you to park. Marc Pyle believes

:12:37. > :12:42.that happens because despite this badge, the signs of his disability

:12:42. > :12:46.are not that obvious. He says the problems he has experienced as a

:12:46. > :12:51.disabled driver, using his permit to park in NO-SPACE like this one,

:12:51. > :12:56.announced a form of abuse. It seems the difficulties he have

:12:56. > :13:01.experienced is far from unique. story is tragic because it is not

:13:01. > :13:06.that uncommon. Win a two-thirds of disabled people around the UK say

:13:06. > :13:11.they may have been the victim of a disability hate crime recently.

:13:11. > :13:15.Next week, Marc Pyle will travel to Westminster to speak to MPs. A

:13:15. > :13:25.chance, he hopes, to improve awareness and make a difference

:13:25. > :13:26.

:13:26. > :13:31.that will make life better for Plans for a new supermarket on the

:13:31. > :13:34.side of the Memorial Stadium in Bristol have been unveiled. The

:13:34. > :13:40.project has not yet received planning permission and it will

:13:40. > :13:48.only go ahead if a new stadium is built next to beat University of

:13:48. > :13:53.the West of England Pampers. Bristol rugby are in action tonight

:13:53. > :14:01.and we can cross there now. David Passmore is there for us now. David,

:14:01. > :14:05.are they heading back to the They have got to be favourites.

:14:05. > :14:11.This is the final match of their regular league season. They are

:14:11. > :14:17.top-of-the-table, but there is plenty of rugby to go. There is a

:14:17. > :14:20.total of 10 games in the play-offs if they want to reach the league.

:14:20. > :14:25.This is in marked contrast to last year.

:14:25. > :14:31.Are just some of the new faces that have helped Bristo rise to the top

:14:31. > :14:36.of the leak. It is not just players, there is a new man at the top, too,

:14:36. > :14:46.Stephen Lansdown. He is a self-made millionaire now officially back in

:14:46. > :14:49.the club. You can have confidence in Liam Middleton. The fans like

:14:49. > :14:55.him and the players obviously play for him. Tactically he seems to be

:14:55. > :14:59.very aware of what needs to be done. I think he is a winner but in a

:14:59. > :15:05.very quiet manner. Since taking over in the summer, Middleton has

:15:05. > :15:09.introduced a new culture. Pushing the players harder, but in a long

:15:09. > :15:14.season he is making sure that they are looked after. We have

:15:14. > :15:21.implemented the right values and the right style. There is no

:15:21. > :15:27.negotiation on that. It is a strong, tough culture, do not get me wrong.

:15:27. > :15:30.There are some hard things that go on in this club. Just 12 months ago,

:15:30. > :15:40.Bristol were in eighth place. They just scraped into the play-offs.

:15:40. > :15:42.

:15:42. > :15:49.Now, they are proudly at the top of the tech -- table. Their success

:15:50. > :15:55.has brought some old faces back. There is more attention to detail.

:15:55. > :16:00.It is really particular because we know that when we get out on the

:16:00. > :16:05.field it's that kind of detail that will make the difference. The club

:16:05. > :16:09.now face a 10 game a play-off system to return to the top flight.

:16:09. > :16:16.We plan on being in the championship next season. We are

:16:16. > :16:20.hoping that it will be a case of being in the league, but we are

:16:20. > :16:24.realistic. We will keep working at it until we get there. With the

:16:24. > :16:30.momentum that Bristol have at the moment, you would not bet against

:16:30. > :16:35.them getting there. Joining me now, and legend of

:16:35. > :16:41.Bristol and England at rugby, Mark Regan. Can Bristol go up and could

:16:41. > :16:46.they stay up? Most definitely. They are recruiting well and that they

:16:46. > :16:53.are bringing some good Bristo lads back as well. They have tougher

:16:53. > :17:01.games coming up. They will have four Cup finals. This Bristol team

:17:01. > :17:08.of very good. There they will go up this year, I feel. There is scope

:17:08. > :17:13.for a slip up, though, isn't there? Definitely, that has been proven.

:17:13. > :17:19.It's is a tough league and it will come down to experience. Bristol

:17:19. > :17:25.have been there and done it before. How bigger golf is there between

:17:25. > :17:30.the championship and the Premiership? It is huge. But

:17:30. > :17:36.Bristol has filled things quite nicely of late. Investment has been

:17:36. > :17:40.really important. The club can go from strength to strength. Bristol

:17:41. > :17:47.have been in the Premiership before and they can go a long wave. They

:17:47. > :17:51.now have the foundation. They have got a great fan base as well?

:17:51. > :17:57.certainly have. I am looking forward to this place being packed

:17:58. > :18:04.out. Do you miss it? I do indeed. I am playing in some charity matches

:18:04. > :18:09.in. Thank you. Bath and Gloucester are both in action in the

:18:09. > :18:18.Premiership tomorrow and Jameson son Daniel makes his 200 and 50th

:18:18. > :18:23.appearance for them. Now to football, no match for Bristol

:18:23. > :18:28.Rovers tomorrow. They hope to continue their mini revival at

:18:28. > :18:36.Rotherham. Swindon are clearly flying. Their latest victory was on

:18:36. > :18:46.Tuesday night over promotion rivals, Shrewsbury. The man aged -- the

:18:46. > :18:46.

:18:46. > :18:51.manager is pleased to be two points clear. If you have a chance to win

:18:51. > :19:01.another two or three games, you extend the gap between you and a

:19:01. > :19:03.

:19:03. > :19:07.fourth place. We want to extend this gap. There is no one like him.

:19:07. > :19:10.These are exciting times for Forest Green Rovers, they are doing well

:19:10. > :19:20.in the lead of three of their players have been chosen to

:19:20. > :19:22.

:19:22. > :19:32.represent their country. They will This is the trio who are on England

:19:32. > :19:34.

:19:34. > :19:40.duty. Jamie Turley, Kieran Forbes, and Edward a showpiece -- Edward --

:19:40. > :19:45.Jodie. There are 16 players in the England squad. It is great

:19:46. > :19:52.recognition for the football club. It shows everybody that we are a

:19:52. > :19:55.young and mixed bunch and that we have some good, young players.

:19:55. > :20:01.Everybody is tremendously proud of the three players getting in the

:20:01. > :20:08.squad. Time to have lunch and talk opposition, shop windows and the

:20:08. > :20:13.Three Lions. It is a cracking feeling. You look at the crowd and

:20:14. > :20:18.whatever level it is it is a real honour to play for your country.

:20:18. > :20:27.you will sing the national anthem, that will be special? Yes, I will

:20:27. > :20:31.be singing along. What will Italy's level be like? The Italian first

:20:31. > :20:40.team are brilliant, what will they be like at your level? It will be a

:20:40. > :20:44.tough game. I respect them a little bit. It will be a fun game. There

:20:44. > :20:48.will be managers from the Football League, will it be a shop window

:20:48. > :20:55.for you? You do not really think about that. You just think about

:20:55. > :21:00.trying to play well for your country. I have got family going up

:21:01. > :21:05.and all I want to do is play well. These are good times at Forest

:21:05. > :21:08.Green, the first team are just seven points off the play-offs and

:21:08. > :21:18.they have three players in the England C Scott. You never know who

:21:18. > :21:22.

:21:22. > :21:28.will be watching next Tuesday. Shelley Rudman and Amy Williams had

:21:28. > :21:32.just missed out on Wed -- medals at the World Championships. Shelley

:21:32. > :21:37.Rudman was in third place at the halfway stage overnight, but she

:21:37. > :21:44.slipped to fourth in the final two runs this afternoon. Amy Williams

:21:44. > :21:49.moved up from sixth spot to fifth. Lizzie Arnold finished in third

:21:49. > :21:54.place getting a bronze medal. There is commentary of this game here

:21:54. > :22:00.tonight on BBC Radio Bristol medium wave. Mark Regan is part of the

:22:00. > :22:10.commentary team. There is commentary of all of the games we

:22:10. > :22:20.

:22:20. > :22:25.Thank you. Dozens of teams from across the country have descended

:22:25. > :22:34.on the Forest of Dean for a weekend of high-speed racing and it is with

:22:34. > :22:44.huskies. That dogs macro drag competitors along the dirt tracks.
