:00:00. > :00:09.power cuts to thousands of homes. Now we can join the news

:00:10. > :00:15.Good evening and welcome to BBC Points West. Our headlines tonight:

:00:16. > :00:18.Battered and bruised ` but better than anticipated. The clear`up

:00:19. > :00:28.continues after last night's storm brings down trees and power lines. I

:00:29. > :00:31.feel very sad the building has been damaged but it could have been so

:00:32. > :00:39.much worse and nobody was here to be heart and that is a good thing. Just

:00:40. > :00:43.ten to 20 miles made the difference of gusts of 70 mph and 16 hours per

:00:44. > :00:47.hour. Also tonight: Discrimination in the

:00:48. > :00:50.workplace ` what happened when a Muslim went for a job against a

:00:51. > :00:53.non`Muslim with an identical CV One of the grandmothers gives

:00:54. > :00:56.evidence in the case of the Bristol couple accused of killing their

:00:57. > :00:59.baby. And the Bristol City player

:01:00. > :01:11.celebrating a very special birthday and a first league win.

:01:12. > :01:17.Good evening. The West is recovering this evening after being battered by

:01:18. > :01:22.high winds and heavy rain in last night's storms. Gusts of up to 5

:01:23. > :01:29.mph caused trees to crash onto buildings and cars in dozens of

:01:30. > :01:35.homes were left without electricity. Somerset and Wiltshire where the

:01:36. > :01:41.worst affected areas in our region. The West walk to a difficult journey

:01:42. > :01:46.to work this morning. And while some could not get started, others wish

:01:47. > :01:52.to be had not tried. Driver of this car escaped serious injury. In

:01:53. > :01:57.Wiltshire, a large tree was blown down near Saint Barnabas Church It

:01:58. > :02:07.crashed into the roof of a small site building. Nobody was inside. It

:02:08. > :02:18.was very wet and windy. Gusts of wind were 60 mph. It happened

:02:19. > :02:22.quickly. When I saw that gap in the trees, I ran here as quickly as I

:02:23. > :02:31.could. That could have been someone trapped. It may not look like it,

:02:32. > :02:37.but this church has actually had a lucky escape. The tree which fell on

:02:38. > :02:44.top of the roof landed in the churchyard. Although damage is

:02:45. > :02:47.extensive, it is repairable. I feel very sad that the building is

:02:48. > :02:51.damaged but it could have been so much worse. I went into the

:02:52. > :02:56.building, expecting to see every window smashed, but not one window

:02:57. > :03:00.was broken. I don't know how many damaged gravestones might be under

:03:01. > :03:06.the tree when we move it. It began in the early hours as storms swept

:03:07. > :03:12.in from the Atlantic. Drivers had been warned to take care. In Swindon

:03:13. > :03:18.lanes were closed for most of the day with tailbacks reaching six

:03:19. > :03:23.miles. Some companies cancelled all the trains, but first Great Western

:03:24. > :03:29.soldiered on. There was no electricity at this station. With a

:03:30. > :03:35.bit of patience, people got really wanted to go. The main challenge has

:03:36. > :03:45.been the impact of the wind blowing trees down onto the railway line

:03:46. > :03:53.will stop. We need to get the trees cut up and cleared away. We want to

:03:54. > :03:55.get services back up and running. Homes were without electricity in

:03:56. > :04:06.Somerset and Wiltshire after trees came down onto his power lines. Some

:04:07. > :04:14.things are gone for good, this tree at the Bishop 's Palace is a years

:04:15. > :04:22.old but could not survive the storm. It is a big loss because we have had

:04:23. > :04:26.this tree since 1885. It replaced another tree which had fallen in the

:04:27. > :04:33.opposite direction. It was a fine specimen. Hopefully we will be

:04:34. > :04:37.planting a new one. As the clean`up continues, we are left to reflect on

:04:38. > :04:46.a night and day that test of resolve but could have been so much worse.

:04:47. > :04:48.It seems that since the storm moved across the West it has become more

:04:49. > :04:57.destructive. After all the warnings, we appear to

:04:58. > :05:05.have escaped lightly. We were very close. It is very

:05:06. > :05:09.difficult to pin these things down until the last minute. This

:05:10. > :05:28.animation shows how things progressed. Here we can see later

:05:29. > :05:45.wins. You'll also gusts of up to 70 mph. That's where we had most of the

:05:46. > :05:53.damage. This is cold, dry air coming down from around three to four

:05:54. > :06:07.kilometres up. This is what caused most of the damage during the last

:06:08. > :06:08.Great Storm. We will have a full forecast at the end of the

:06:09. > :06:14.programme. Great Storm. We will have a full

:06:15. > :06:19.forecast at Other news: The BBC s Inside Out West programme has

:06:20. > :06:23.revealed widespread discrimination against Muslims in the workplace.

:06:24. > :06:27.One Muslim and one non`Muslim applied for 14 jobs. All of the

:06:28. > :06:35.vacancies were advertised in shop windows. The non`Muslim succeeded 14

:06:36. > :06:41.times but the Muslim reporter just three times.

:06:42. > :06:45.Being unemployed is a sad reality for many young people in this

:06:46. > :06:50.country. But for young Muslim men the likelihood is much greater. Is

:06:51. > :06:57.the village and affecting their job prospects? To find out, dash`mac is

:06:58. > :07:09.a religion affecting their job prospects? These men wear similar in

:07:10. > :07:10.age and had almost identical CDs but one man wore traditional Islamic

:07:11. > :07:30.dress. In all, the two men applied for 40

:07:31. > :07:35.jobs advertised in Windows. A Muslim man was only successful in getting

:07:36. > :07:41.the job interviews. The non`Muslim reporter secured 13 interviews and a

:07:42. > :07:45.job offer. One of the businesses they visited was a supermarket which

:07:46. > :07:48.we cannot name. It had adverts in its window for three different jobs.

:07:49. > :08:14.The Muslim reporter went in first. When our second reporter in choir at

:08:15. > :08:18.about the store supervisor job ten minutes later, the same member of

:08:19. > :08:19.staff told him that there were vacancies and even helped him with

:08:20. > :08:41.his application form. In this country we have a lot of

:08:42. > :08:44.which protects against discrimination. Individual firms

:08:45. > :08:48.have these policies and we need to make sure that these policies are

:08:49. > :08:53.being applied. Responding to our investigation, the supermarket told

:08:54. > :08:59.us it has a zero tolerance policy towards all forms of discrimination.

:09:00. > :09:10.It is investigating the BBC's findings.

:09:11. > :09:19.Inside Out West will be on after the one show at 730. Stay with us, as

:09:20. > :09:28.there is much more to come tonight, including: Heartbreak for this

:09:29. > :09:32.motorcycle star. We reflect on Scott Redding's courage as he loses out on

:09:33. > :09:38.being the first British champion for 36 years.

:09:39. > :09:40.One of the mothers of a Bristol couple accused of killing your

:09:41. > :09:46.three`month`old baby has told a court how the four and took cannabis

:09:47. > :09:50.every day. It has also been revealed that they were already known to

:09:51. > :09:55.social services before the little girl or dash`mac little girl was

:09:56. > :10:00.taken to hospital. Paris Vince`Stephens died in

:10:01. > :10:04.hospital days after what the prosecution described as

:10:05. > :10:08.catastrophic head injuries. She was brought to the children's Bristol

:10:09. > :10:19.hospital but doctors were unable to save her. The prosecution claim that

:10:20. > :10:21.her mother Danah Vince and her partner either should curb or

:10:22. > :10:28.brought her head into a soft surface. Giving evidence today, Gina

:10:29. > :10:39.'s mother said that the couple were always arguing and that the Nevins

:10:40. > :10:45.had thrown him out. With both families sitting in the public doubt

:10:46. > :10:48.gallery, Marie Stephens described that her son had been feeding the

:10:49. > :10:53.baby when she went all floppy and he gave her mouth to mouth will stop

:10:54. > :11:01.them being snatched the baby away, shouting what's going on. It was

:11:02. > :11:05.from this flat but she made a 9 9 call to the ambulance service on

:11:06. > :11:09.Friday afternoon. In the early hours of Saturday morning, she sent a text

:11:10. > :11:12.to Marie, telling her that the baby was not well and that if the police

:11:13. > :11:19.called, nothing had happened while she had been hoped that the flat.

:11:20. > :11:22.Marie Stephens admitted that her son suffered from learning difficulties

:11:23. > :11:26.but said there was nothing wrong with his brain. She said that the

:11:27. > :11:32.couple often hate one another and smoked cannabis every day. She said

:11:33. > :11:36.he would never heart a little kid. Both are facing charges of

:11:37. > :11:44.manslaughter and of causing or allowing the death of a child.

:11:45. > :11:50.The Swindon to football player Nile Ranger has appeared to deny charges

:11:51. > :11:57.of rape. The former Newco castle United striker was charged. He was

:11:58. > :12:03.granted bail at head of a trial which is due to take place at the

:12:04. > :12:06.start of next year. A man who ran an illegal meat

:12:07. > :12:10.processing plant which supplied fried chicken to take aways across

:12:11. > :12:14.the West has told a court he is financially ruined. At the premises

:12:15. > :12:19.in Bristol, the toilets were next to food preparation areas and

:12:20. > :12:25.underpants were used to wipe down surfaces. Kamran Ajaib has already

:12:26. > :12:28.admitted eight counts of failing to comply with food hygiene

:12:29. > :12:33.regulations. Today the court heard that he had lied repeatedly to avoid

:12:34. > :12:38.paying back any financial benefit he had made from the business.

:12:39. > :12:43.One of the world's biggest environmental groups has dropped

:12:44. > :12:47.charges over plans to build a new nuclear power station in Somerset.

:12:48. > :12:54.Greenpeace say they remain dubious about the proposals for Hinkley C.

:12:55. > :12:56.Seven days on from the big announcement and Hinkley C is this

:12:57. > :13:02.evening another step closer to actually being built. This time last

:13:03. > :13:08.week, Clinton was keen to it expressed that this had not yet been

:13:09. > :13:12.signed off. That was because there were still several legal challenges

:13:13. > :13:17.in its way, but now one has gone away. The piece is dropping its

:13:18. > :13:21.claim against the government against the granting of planning

:13:22. > :13:25.permission. Greenpeace's challenge was all about nuclear waste. They

:13:26. > :13:30.believe that the government should not be awarding planning permission

:13:31. > :13:34.without first having a long`term plan to deal with radioactive waste.

:13:35. > :13:37.But no Greenpeace have dropped that challenge, saying they believe that

:13:38. > :13:44.the gov`mac's assertion that they will be able to find something,

:13:45. > :13:54.somewhere to dump waste will be accepted by courts.

:13:55. > :14:01.The government disagrees, saying they are looking at solutions. David

:14:02. > :14:11.Cameron once again reiterated his support for Hinkley C today. When,

:14:12. > :14:15.as I hope we will, start building more nuclear power stations, there

:14:16. > :14:19.will be more work for those people to do and more skills and I think it

:14:20. > :14:24.is an important a that we have been out of four too long and we are now

:14:25. > :14:27.getting back into. Is still a challenge by the Irish National

:14:28. > :14:34.trust, and the European Union is yet to rule. But this evening, the

:14:35. > :14:43.problem dash`mac the project is a step closer.

:14:44. > :14:46.In sport, it was a busy weekend Bristol City's long wait for a

:14:47. > :14:52.league win is finally over and we are going to catch up with their

:14:53. > :14:55.hat`trick hero very sharply. It is a big night for the Somerset

:14:56. > :15:01.Rebels as they try to clinch the Premier league title. Our reporters

:15:02. > :15:06.at the track now. Although it is looking wet, the actual competition

:15:07. > :15:10.has survived the weather. If I told you it was not raining ten minutes

:15:11. > :15:17.ago it would have the truth. The heavens have just opened up now The

:15:18. > :15:19.result of that of water on the track behind me now. I have had a walk

:15:20. > :15:29.around it. We will be going ahead at 7:30pm. 15 heats to decide who will

:15:30. > :15:34.be crowned premiership champions. Somerset Rebels need to overturn

:15:35. > :15:38.Edinburgh tonight. They have come close tonight in the 13 years they

:15:39. > :15:41.have been going. Last night the mistake they just one single point,

:15:42. > :15:46.so let us hope that it stays dry and that they can win it this year.

:15:47. > :15:52.Let's talk about football. Huge relief for Bristol City to get that

:15:53. > :16:04.first league win. How long had it been since last one? Thankfully not

:16:05. > :16:08.14 years, but 2000 minutes of football. Basically far too long.

:16:09. > :16:14.Supporters were told that this would be difficulties and per Bristol City

:16:15. > :16:20.but I do not think that any of them expected it to be this hard. I have

:16:21. > :16:25.been catching up with the hat`trick hero from the match against Carlisle

:16:26. > :16:31.on Saturday, Jay Emmanuel`Thomas, who believes that the result on

:16:32. > :16:35.Saturday will be a turning point. One is the magic number for Jay

:16:36. > :16:39.Emmanuel`Thomas, a first win at the weekend and today a first birthday

:16:40. > :16:44.party for his daughter. She was just four months old when city last won a

:16:45. > :16:46.league game in March, something her dad Putin statically rated Carlisle

:16:47. > :16:58.with the first hat`trick of his senior career. `` her dad

:16:59. > :17:02.ecstatically rated. I never managed to score three in one game before,

:17:03. > :17:07.but it was a very good feeling for me when it came. The 4`2 win takes

:17:08. > :17:10.city of the bottom of the table and eased the pressure that has been

:17:11. > :17:18.building on the head coach, Sean O'Driscoll. He is a good coach and

:17:19. > :17:25.we do not want him to go anywhere. On Saturday it felt like it was

:17:26. > :17:28.getting to a point where this actuation `` the situation was

:17:29. > :17:36.getting Opera to. We had to leave Carlisle with three points and that

:17:37. > :17:39.is what we did. He now has ten goals for the season and his hat`trick won

:17:40. > :17:48.him the signed match ball to keep. It is the sort of performance which

:17:49. > :17:57.could mean that there is light at the end of the tunnel for Bristol.

:17:58. > :18:03.Does this take the pressure off Sean O'Driscoll? It does contain some

:18:04. > :18:07.praising space. It is just one when in 22 games, a lot of room for

:18:08. > :18:11.improvement. It is just as important for the players. They put in a lot

:18:12. > :18:14.of hard work on the training ground. They needed to see some reward for

:18:15. > :18:19.all that hard work that they were putting in. They have got two home

:18:20. > :18:22.matches coming up on Saturday against all the. And then on the

:18:23. > :18:26.following Tuesday against Crawley. If they stay unbeaten and pick up a

:18:27. > :18:29.couple of wins in those matches then you can see that things are

:18:30. > :18:36.improving and the pressure will drop off. If you lose on Saturday I

:18:37. > :18:39.suspect that fans will be calling into BBC Radio Suffolk today with

:18:40. > :18:49.the same old questions. If you want to watch the action again it is on

:18:50. > :18:58.the BBC open air `` calling into BBC radio. And that goal from Wayne

:18:59. > :19:01.Hennessey helped his side and their first home win of the season against

:19:02. > :19:17.Nottingham Forest. The goals in that game were not bad either. A bit of

:19:18. > :19:28.sad news, there was huge disappointment for quite chilly s

:19:29. > :19:36.Scott Redding this weekend. Quedgeley's Scott Redding. He

:19:37. > :19:41.crashed on the first lap eight in Japan and his main rival went on to

:19:42. > :19:44.win the race and therefore claim the World Championships. That is all

:19:45. > :19:52.over as far as Scott is concerned. Incredibly proud of what he has

:19:53. > :19:57.achieved the season. He is looking forward to stepping up to Moto GP

:19:58. > :20:02.next season. Keeping an eye on Scott Redding. There is a crash in there.

:20:03. > :20:07.Scott Redding has been brought down! Scott Redding crashes out the

:20:08. > :20:12.Japanese Grand Prix. And along with it his chance of winning his 20 3

:20:13. > :20:17.Moto2 title. Back at home it was an uncomfortable watch for his dad It

:20:18. > :20:22.is not nice to see anybody come off, not just because it is your son But

:20:23. > :20:30.especially when you're not there and you cannot do anything. You're

:20:31. > :20:47.waiting for a phone call from his team to let you know how he is

:20:48. > :20:53.doing. He had previously broken his wrist last week. To have it happen

:20:54. > :20:57.again, it is not a nice feeling Scott Redding had been in pole

:20:58. > :21:05.position the whole season, including winning the British Moto2 GP here at

:21:06. > :21:10.Silverstone in June. His hopes of becoming the first Brit to win a

:21:11. > :21:15.motorbike championship since 19 7 may be over, but he's determined to

:21:16. > :21:19.finish second. Want to make a good finish and I have nothing to lose. I

:21:20. > :21:24.may have another crash, but it is possible at the time you go out

:21:25. > :21:27.Valencia is last race of the season but Scott Redding has already got

:21:28. > :21:40.his sights on next year. The following day he starts training for

:21:41. > :21:50.the top`flight. No crowning moment for Scott Redding. But we are in the

:21:51. > :21:53.pits tonight for the heat. We will have the pictures for you. Hopefully

:21:54. > :22:00.that crowning moment in our ten o'clock bulletin. Back to one of our

:22:01. > :22:07.top stories, an undercover operation by BBC's Inside Out West programme

:22:08. > :22:14.has identified widespread discrimination in the workplace

:22:15. > :22:19.against Muslims. We can get action now from the MP Stephen Williams.

:22:20. > :22:23.Thank you for joining us. This investigation found a distinct lack

:22:24. > :22:29.of race equality. What is your reaction to all this? From what I

:22:30. > :22:34.have read about it, I have not seen the programme, I was quite horrified

:22:35. > :22:38.that this was still going on. Clearly discrimination is wrong

:22:39. > :22:42.whether it is on gender, race or sexuality. We are always on

:22:43. > :22:47.people's side in these cases and discrimination is unlawful. What you

:22:48. > :22:51.think should happen to the businesses? The individual

:22:52. > :22:56.businesses themselves I am sure would want to give their own side of

:22:57. > :23:00.events, but it is possible that they have committed offences, and if

:23:01. > :23:04.people had been genuinely applying for jobs or flats, they may have a

:23:05. > :23:09.case for damages, that would be what would happen in a real situation.

:23:10. > :23:13.Teasing that this is something that legislation would find it difficult

:23:14. > :23:22.to change? # do you think that this. We have had race relations

:23:23. > :23:26.legislation for many years now. Society's attitudes have changed a

:23:27. > :23:30.lot during that period and clearly the legal framework and the law has

:23:31. > :23:34.a role to play, but you are right, it is down to all of us to challenge

:23:35. > :23:41.discrimination very find it, speak up about, condemn it. Rightly so.

:23:42. > :23:45.The BBC has played an important role here in exposing it will be thought

:23:46. > :23:49.it was not taking place. It is a good job by the BBC but it is

:23:50. > :23:52.worrying that this is taking place. Does it worry you that you have a

:23:53. > :23:57.lot of work still to do to change this? It is a worry and that is why

:23:58. > :24:01.it is important that we continue, right across government, not just my

:24:02. > :24:05.department, to tackle discrimination. Both on the legal

:24:06. > :24:09.side, to have sanctions against Abel who commit discrimination on

:24:10. > :24:11.whatever grounds, but also to bring people together from different

:24:12. > :24:16.backgrounds and that is actually what my department does a lot of

:24:17. > :24:18.good work on, bringing people together from different

:24:19. > :24:22.backgrounds, different faith communities, he might otherwise not

:24:23. > :24:25.meet. They can go to a music festival together are street party.

:24:26. > :24:32.To break down those cultural misunderstandings. Thank you. Let's

:24:33. > :24:41.return to the other big story today, it was last night's storm.

:24:42. > :24:47.It has been very lively in the daylight hours. As we look back

:24:48. > :24:54.towards the story, these are the maximum bus to strengths that we

:24:55. > :25:08.have seen recorded. 70 files mph `` 75 mph. As we look towards tomorrow

:25:09. > :25:13.at least it will be a vastly improved story, many of you will

:25:14. > :25:21.have a dry day, or evade about. Some showers around but no junior is

:25:22. > :25:25.windy `` but nowhere near as windy as we have seen it today. Some very

:25:26. > :25:30.lively showers for some of you, some with hail and thunder. You saw

:25:31. > :25:37.colleague being courted by another cluster just living in from parts of

:25:38. > :25:43.Somerset. It will take off while on the first part of the night for the
