:00:00. > 3:59:59Adebowale show nod remorse. That is all from us. Now we join our news

:00:00. > :00:18.teams where Our main story tonight: A Christmas

:00:19. > :00:21.present for Westland. The company wins a billion pound helicopter

:00:22. > :00:41.order from Norway bringing festive cheer to Somerset. Other products

:00:42. > :00:45.and the loyal workforce. The other stories making the news tonight A

:00:46. > :00:49.widow's grief: Her husband died after apparently falling from a

:00:50. > :00:53.train ` why did the police take so long to find his body? I will not

:00:54. > :00:56.give up until I have some idea of what has happened. Fasten your

:00:57. > :01:00.seltbelts ` The planes blown around in the air and the cars that turned

:01:01. > :01:04.into boats. What will the weather throw at us next? And that's my

:01:05. > :01:14.girl! The synchronised swimmers teaching their daughters to perform

:01:15. > :01:17.just like they did. First tonight, the ?1 billion order that's just

:01:18. > :01:20.landed in Somerset's helicopter factory. At lunchtime today, the

:01:21. > :01:23.Norwegian government signed a deal for a new fleet of search and rescue

:01:24. > :01:26.helicopters, made by Agusta Westland in Yeovil. The Business Secretary

:01:27. > :01:28.Vince Cable came west to congratulate the staff, and our

:01:29. > :01:43.business correspondent Dave Harvey was there for us. We have just heard

:01:44. > :01:52.from Norway that the contract has been signed for 16 appliances.

:01:53. > :01:56.APPLAUSE They don't really do ceremony here,

:01:57. > :02:04.but for half an hour, they paused on the production line, to take in the

:02:05. > :02:10.news. You have superb products, world`class engineering and a loyal

:02:11. > :02:14.workforce. And this is what they make ` the AW101, in search and

:02:15. > :02:17.rescue mode. In the future, if you get stuck in a Norwegian fjord, this

:02:18. > :02:28.helicopter will mean the difference between life and death. For Beth

:02:29. > :02:32.Gibson, it means a good job. One of 3,200 staff here, today's deal means

:02:33. > :02:38.Beth can carry on doing the job she loves. There is nothing better than

:02:39. > :02:44.watching it go out on the pads and watching it fly. It is a huge deal

:02:45. > :02:50.but what really matters is that this is not a military aircraft but a

:02:51. > :02:54.search and rescue aircraft. This company is trying to be less

:02:55. > :03:02.dependent on the decisions made at the Ministry of Defence and more

:03:03. > :03:09.open to overseas sales. We were purely UK military but now we will

:03:10. > :03:13.be more international. It is terrific. There is still plenty of

:03:14. > :03:17.work here for the army and the Royal Navy, but the fortunes of factories

:03:18. > :03:20.like this often hang on a few key contracts. Before today, the order

:03:21. > :03:27.book was starting to look a little thin. They are building aircraft for

:03:28. > :03:30.the Italians at the moment and they have one or two after that, but it

:03:31. > :03:36.was beginning to slow down but it has now been boosted up again. What

:03:37. > :03:41.matters is their ability to export and the ability to get into the

:03:42. > :03:45.market for search and rescue helicopters. They are the best

:03:46. > :03:49.company in the world for that business and their innovation is

:03:50. > :03:53.ahead of everyone else, and it is important that we work with them to

:03:54. > :03:57.develop the market. Speeches over, it was back to work. But everyone

:03:58. > :04:04.here, and in the dozens of supply firms, will have a much happier

:04:05. > :04:08.Christmas with this deal in the bag. A shelter for homeless women in

:04:09. > :04:13.Bristol is moving into new premises after Christmas to cope with growing

:04:14. > :04:19.demand. There has been a big rise in the number of women sleeping on the

:04:20. > :04:24.streets. According to a homeless charity, last year, 45 people were

:04:25. > :04:29.sleeping rough in the city overnight, but now it is around 70.

:04:30. > :04:36.Setting up for the night in a part in the rain. That is the reality for

:04:37. > :04:43.70 people every night in Bristol. A quarter of them are women. We found

:04:44. > :04:48.one shivering from the rain in a car park with only a towel for covering.

:04:49. > :04:55.Jane said there is no provision in Bristol. There is not enough for the

:04:56. > :05:07.homeless. Basically, at the end of the day, especially if you have a

:05:08. > :05:12.dog. There are emergency places for women in Bristol and according to

:05:13. > :05:18.the Council, there are 42 women only beds, some in hostels and some in

:05:19. > :05:22.supported housing. There is a shelter that opens four nights a

:05:23. > :05:27.week and is even open on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Each night we

:05:28. > :05:32.are open it is fully used by women from all walks of life. There is a

:05:33. > :05:38.need and there is a gap where there are needy women who are seeking

:05:39. > :05:46.refuge at night in a safe environment. In January, the shelter

:05:47. > :05:49.is moving to a new building. We will have more space. Instead of

:05:50. > :05:57.mattresses on the floor there will be proper bedroom is shared by three

:05:58. > :06:02.women. This is run by a charity relying on donations. Bristol

:06:03. > :06:05.council said the problem of homelessness is not as big as the

:06:06. > :06:12.charity claims but says there needs to be more beds in the city. We need

:06:13. > :06:15.more accommodation, not just for women but there is a population of

:06:16. > :06:21.men who are homeless. It has increased over the last 12 months.

:06:22. > :06:29.It is not very nice, you put yourself at risk. For Michelle,

:06:30. > :06:35.homeless for three month, the experience has been frightening

:06:36. > :06:39.Vulnerable to attack, scared and cold, she is hoping to get her own

:06:40. > :06:44.flat soon. That would be her best Christmas present this year. The

:06:45. > :06:47.family of a man who went missing say the police have told them his body

:06:48. > :06:51.could have been found earlier, if the investigation had been carried

:06:52. > :06:55.out differently. The body of Tom Edwards was found next to a railway

:06:56. > :06:58.line five days after a night out in Swindon. His family has now

:06:59. > :07:06.officially complained about how they were dealt with. Sabet Choudhury

:07:07. > :07:12.reports. It gets worse, it does not get better. They say time is a

:07:13. > :07:16.healer, but I would not say that. For Tom's widow, life without him is

:07:17. > :07:19.a living nightmare. The couple were married and lived together here in

:07:20. > :07:37.Calne for just over a year. What's day today life like? Hard ` never

:07:38. > :07:43.easy. You want to stay here cos of all memories here. That's why I m

:07:44. > :07:53.staying. Lots of good memories ` we got married here. It's a horrible

:07:54. > :08:03.nightmare and I dont want to leave. He is here. Tom was last seen on a

:08:04. > :08:08.night out here, Rudis Bar in Swindon, one friday night last June.

:08:09. > :08:11.He was given a lift by police to a bus stop over there before he

:08:12. > :08:15.eventually made it to the train station. He got on a train heading

:08:16. > :08:17.on a journey that was never completed. Desperate to find him,

:08:18. > :08:26.the family launched their own search. They appealed for help. He

:08:27. > :08:31.is unconscious somewhere, he is alive. That is what we need to keep

:08:32. > :08:35.thinking. We need to be positive. He will come back through the door But

:08:36. > :08:40.he never did. Five days later, Tom's body was found by a railway line

:08:41. > :08:47.near Chippenham Station. I didn t believe it was him. Even though they

:08:48. > :08:52.told us it was a body, I could not believe it. That's when it hit. I

:08:53. > :08:58.went to bed for first time that week. To be honest, I dont remember

:08:59. > :09:01.sleeping. I just shook all night. Police have now told the family

:09:02. > :09:04.things could have been done differently, and Tom's body perhaps

:09:05. > :09:10.found sooner ` sparing the family days of uncertainty. They've now

:09:11. > :09:19.officially complained about the police contact with Tom on the night

:09:20. > :09:22.he went missing and their search. Our sense of frustration came from

:09:23. > :09:28.the first 12 hour window where we were doing work off our own back. We

:09:29. > :09:33.were adamant from the start that something had happened because of

:09:34. > :09:38.how he was. There was no other reason why he would not have come

:09:39. > :09:44.back. The sense of frustration is because we may have got categorised

:09:45. > :09:47.and because he was a man who went out drinking. Wiltshire Police have

:09:48. > :09:51.already investigated themselves because they'd had contact with Tom

:09:52. > :09:54.before his death. They told us lessons have been learnt. They're

:09:55. > :10:02.now re`investigating after the family complaint. The events

:10:03. > :10:06.surrounding Tom's death still remain a mystery. An inquest next year may

:10:07. > :10:10.provide some answers for his family. A family trying to come to terms

:10:11. > :10:23.with losing a brother, a son and a husband. In the film, you can feel

:10:24. > :10:31.the pain and grief of the family. What have the police said? Nothing.

:10:32. > :10:34.The complaint is still being investigated and the inquest into

:10:35. > :10:39.Tom's death is due to take place next year. We approached the

:10:40. > :10:43.commissioner about this and he said it was an operational matter. There

:10:44. > :10:49.is still a lot of mystery surrounding what happened to Tom.

:10:50. > :10:54.The family feel that the inquest may answer some of those questions but

:10:55. > :11:00.they are hopeful that whatever happens, lessons are learned into

:11:01. > :11:11.how the police carry out searches into missing people in the future.

:11:12. > :11:18.Thank you. Only six days until Christmas, and only one day at

:11:19. > :11:26.school for some. The last day for first class post is tomorrow. Coming

:11:27. > :11:34.up: Like mother, like daughter. The synchronised swimmers keeping it

:11:35. > :11:37.harmonious in the pool and at home. A number of police stations across

:11:38. > :11:41.Bristol are under threat of closure as part of cuts being planned by

:11:42. > :11:44.senior officers as a direct result of Government spending reductions.

:11:45. > :11:50.There are concerns tonight that the closures could result in longer

:11:51. > :11:56.response times. This exclusive report by our Home Affairs

:11:57. > :11:59.Correspondent, Steve Brodie. Rank and file officers are angry after

:12:00. > :12:02.being told that a number of stations including Trinity Road and Broadbury

:12:03. > :12:06.Road, which provide 24 hour a day response teams, could close by the

:12:07. > :12:09.middle of next year. Part of the plan will see those teams being

:12:10. > :12:12.moved to Kenneth Steel House in St Philips. Officers have told the BBC

:12:13. > :12:15.that senior officers have warned them about possible closures.

:12:16. > :12:22.Trinity Road in particular is mentioned in this question and

:12:23. > :12:25.answer session. The Police Federation claims there will be

:12:26. > :12:28.potentially dangerous delays in responding to incidents as it will

:12:29. > :12:35.take longer to transport people under arrest to the new custody

:12:36. > :12:40.suites at Patchway and at Keynsham. Everything is on the table and is

:12:41. > :12:51.dependent on the new operating model. If we start closing police

:12:52. > :12:57.nations, `` stations, these are communities, people see these as

:12:58. > :13:00.safe havens where they can go to. Tonight, the force said that Trinity

:13:01. > :13:02.Road was not going to close immediately but Bristol's district

:13:03. > :13:05.commander, John Stratford would not rule out possible future closures

:13:06. > :13:13.following the publication of a review in the New Year. I cannot

:13:14. > :13:16.rule closures out. We have to make tough decisions going forward. We

:13:17. > :13:20.have to spend money and we would rather spend the money putting

:13:21. > :13:24.police officers on the street than retaining a large stock of expensive

:13:25. > :13:27.buildings. What is certain is that the custody suite here at Trinity

:13:28. > :13:32.Road will close and the station s car park is to be sold off. Next in

:13:33. > :13:35.line for the possible axe are the stations at fish ponds where the

:13:36. > :13:38.lease on the building is running out and is proving too expensive to

:13:39. > :13:41.renew, and Southmead once the Patchway complex is up and running.

:13:42. > :13:45.News of these possible closures comes the day after it was revealed

:13:46. > :13:48.that the number of police dog teams are to be dramatically reduced as

:13:49. > :13:51.part of a collaboration between the Avon Somerset, Wiltshire and

:13:52. > :13:55.Gloucestershire forces. Even Ronnie, the police dog who has his own

:13:56. > :13:59.Twitter account is to be retired and his handler moved to different role.

:14:00. > :14:05.The review of property is just part of the force's battle to cut another

:14:06. > :14:11.?15 million from its budget. We should know for sure where those

:14:12. > :14:14.cuts will fall in the New Year. A man arrested in connection with the

:14:15. > :14:17.murder of Melanie Hall has been re`bailed until February next year.

:14:18. > :14:21.Melanie, who was 25, was last seen alive leaving a Bath nightclub in

:14:22. > :14:25.1996. Her remains were found four years ago next to a slip road off

:14:26. > :14:28.the M5 near Thornbury. The man, who's 44, was detained at his home

:14:29. > :14:38.in Bath last month. Police say he's now been re`bailed while they

:14:39. > :14:42.continue their investigation. The Secretary of State for Communities

:14:43. > :14:48.has dismissed an appeal by Tesco to build a store at the former Bath

:14:49. > :14:54.Press site. The supermarket wanted to redevelop land on Lower Bristol

:14:55. > :15:01.Road. But Eric Pickles has refused to grant planning permission. He

:15:02. > :15:04.says the plan would have a harmful impact on the shops on the nearby

:15:05. > :15:07.Moorland Road. Tesco says it's disappointed and that its plan had

:15:08. > :15:10.offered significant investment in the city. The police have seized

:15:11. > :15:14.?200,000 worth of products in a raid on a shop in Taunton which sells

:15:15. > :15:17.legal highs. Officers from Avon and Somerset searched the shop on Bridge

:15:18. > :15:20.Street after information from the public about suspected illegal

:15:21. > :15:31.drugs. The police say various substances were seized and they re

:15:32. > :15:34.now being sent for forensic testing. It's been built to help transform

:15:35. > :15:38.public perceptions of the Bristol Royal Infirmary ` but there's been a

:15:39. > :15:42.mixed reaction to the hospital's new "welcome centre". The entrance foyer

:15:43. > :15:45.is part of a multi`million pound project to improve the building s

:15:46. > :15:59.appearance ` but not everyone's been impressed by the new design. Here's

:16:00. > :16:02.Jules Hyam. It is one of the country's oldest infirmaries `

:16:03. > :16:05.dating back originally to 1735 but its 1970's facade doesn't really

:16:06. > :16:15.sell the place as a centre of excellence. The University Hospital

:16:16. > :16:21.Trust has raised? 80 million to transform the outside ` and

:16:22. > :16:25.re`organise services on the inside. The first and most visible change so

:16:26. > :16:29.far ` the new "welcome centre". It's meant to provide a sense of arrival

:16:30. > :16:33.` offer waiting space and generate income from retails ` but does it

:16:34. > :16:36.say hospital ` or coffee shop? It looks like a coffee shop but it is

:16:37. > :16:44.more professional. It is a nice environment. I would rather have

:16:45. > :16:48.this than the old building. It is more modern, that is the way it

:16:49. > :16:53.should be. Take the drabness away from everything. The trust is only

:16:54. > :16:58.part way through the whole project and it is a big one. Next is the new

:16:59. > :17:05.facade. Three artists and three architectural practices put forward

:17:06. > :17:10.ideas. This was the winner. Light and bright, the hospital said it

:17:11. > :17:13.best reflected their clinical excellence. It made a good first

:17:14. > :17:16.impression and was a big improvement on what has been long regarded as

:17:17. > :17:21.one of the least attractive loadings in Bristol. Work on the new look

:17:22. > :17:31.facade should start not too long into the New Year. The Mayor of

:17:32. > :17:38.Swindon approaches a vote of no confidence tonight after making

:17:39. > :17:58.derogatory remarks, allegedly, about children with learning disabilities.

:17:59. > :18:03.He is a Conservative councillor and in October he was at a private event

:18:04. > :18:08.and the conversation got round to talking about adults with learning

:18:09. > :18:13.disabilities. It is alleged that he referred to adults with Down's

:18:14. > :18:17.syndrome in a derogatory manner He questioned whether they should still

:18:18. > :18:20.be allowed to have children. The whole matter is still being looked

:18:21. > :18:25.at by the standards committee but they do not report back until next

:18:26. > :18:29.year. Tonight we have a vote of confidence, asking the Mayor to

:18:30. > :18:33.resign. I have spoken to the Mayor and he said that whatever remarks he

:18:34. > :18:38.made was spoken in private and they should not be used to attack him in

:18:39. > :18:45.a public office. I put that point to the Labour leader. This was not a

:18:46. > :18:48.private meeting. It was attended by councillors from all parties and it

:18:49. > :18:54.is unacceptable for anyone to make such remarks in any forum nowadays.

:18:55. > :18:59.He has let down the people of Swindon. We cannot wait for the

:19:00. > :19:04.standards committee report. We cannot have an unfit Mayor for three

:19:05. > :19:11.months. Are their allegations that politics has become embroiled in all

:19:12. > :19:16.this? Very much so, yes. The Labour only have a majority of one so

:19:17. > :19:20.opposition parties will do what they can to disgraced them as the Tories

:19:21. > :19:27.try to gain ground. The committee can suspend him but it is ultimately

:19:28. > :19:33.up to the public to unseat him. One final note of irony, the Mayor will

:19:34. > :19:40.share a meeting tonight and he will have to cast the vote. Thank you.

:19:41. > :19:44.Now, preparing the Christmas dinner can be a challenge of epic

:19:45. > :19:52.proportions for many of us ` but now help is at hand. A community group

:19:53. > :19:54.in Somerset ` appropriately called Bubble and Speak encourages people

:19:55. > :19:58.to get cooking. This year they're helping one of their members to cook

:19:59. > :20:04.the festive feast for her family for the very first time. Simon Lewis

:20:05. > :20:08.went to find out more. Cooking your first Christmas dinner for the

:20:09. > :20:13.family can be daunting. For this woman it is especially so. She is

:20:14. > :20:20.registered blind. This year I decided to cook and not allow my

:20:21. > :20:25.family to do it for me, and that gives me a bit more independence.

:20:26. > :20:32.Although she has always been a keen cook, it is thanks to this group,

:20:33. > :20:38.Bubble and Speak, who have given her the confidence to tackle a festive

:20:39. > :20:44.epic. You have more things to cook at Christmas such as pigs in

:20:45. > :20:53.blankets and Yorkshire puddings and everything. It is knowing, timing

:20:54. > :20:59.wise, when to put it all in and that it is cooked properly. That is the

:21:00. > :21:04.bit I will find difficult as well. As her confidence has increased she

:21:05. > :21:10.has done more in the kitchen. She is now preparing things which is great.

:21:11. > :21:17.I think that gives her the confidence to do a bit more at home

:21:18. > :21:24.because she has a number of carers who come and help her but she likes

:21:25. > :21:28.to be independent. She will be the boss in the kitchen and who knows,

:21:29. > :21:37.by next Christmas, she may have started a new family tradition. I

:21:38. > :21:44.wish I had half her confidence in the kitchen! Now, they say history

:21:45. > :21:47.repeats itself and for a group of synchronised swimmers from Bristol

:21:48. > :21:49.that's certainly the case. They ve just qualified for the England

:21:50. > :21:54.Synchronised swimming team ` coached by their mums, who all represented

:21:55. > :21:58.their country in the sport. Tracey Miller went to find out what it s

:21:59. > :22:06.like to swim in your mother's wake. These four girls are leading the way

:22:07. > :22:13.in their sport. All have qualified for the England team and have their

:22:14. > :22:16.sights on the next Olympics. They train at Hengrove in Bristol under

:22:17. > :22:22.the coaching of three ex`national swimmers. So I asked Kate, Isabelle,

:22:23. > :22:29.Chloe and Corrie, what's it like when your coach is also your mum?

:22:30. > :22:37.People think your mum has done all this stuff and now it is your turn.

:22:38. > :22:40.And competing with your sister? It is good. Sometimes we have an

:22:41. > :22:47.argument in the middle of the pool. Normally, it is OK. The mums and now

:22:48. > :22:50.coaches, Georgie, Karen and Marie represented great Britain in the

:22:51. > :22:57.90's. They all competed together and are now coaching the next

:22:58. > :23:00.generation. We are seeing them starting their pathway as young

:23:01. > :23:03.athletes, and it takes you back 40 years when you are doing the same

:23:04. > :23:09.thing. The same sport but even the mums admit the challenges are

:23:10. > :23:15.greater. It is a lot harder now She does laugh. She does give a little

:23:16. > :23:21.giggle when she sees pictures. It's not just the hairstyles that have

:23:22. > :23:26.changed. Luckily, our daughters are fit and they are working hard to get

:23:27. > :23:31.on the world stage. It is great for them because they have each other.

:23:32. > :23:35.There are a group of them who are driving up standards in Bristol The

:23:36. > :23:38.future for the girls and the the Bristol Synchro club is looking

:23:39. > :23:44.promising, with funding secured for the next three years of training. I

:23:45. > :23:47.am impressed. Parts of the West were battered overnight by heavy rain and

:23:48. > :23:50.strong winds. Some flights at Bristol Airport were delayed ` while

:23:51. > :23:57.others had to make difficult landings. Drivers faced tricky

:23:58. > :24:00.conditions throughout the night too. The torrential rain also forced

:24:01. > :24:10.officials to abandon Bristol Rovers' FA Cup second round replay away at

:24:11. > :24:14.Crawley Town. Well, let's just have a look at that plane landing again

:24:15. > :24:22.from a different angle. Flight 816 coming in from Milan appeared to

:24:23. > :24:26.have a tricky descent into Bristol. The airport has told us that it is

:24:27. > :24:34.in fact a perfectly executed landing in a cross wind. And by contrast,

:24:35. > :24:37.look at these wonderful pictures. This was the sunset in Taunton this

:24:38. > :24:43.evening captured by our cameraman Steve Powell... It was so beautiful

:24:44. > :24:52.people couldn't resist stopping to capture it themselves on their

:25:01. > :25:07.comments? It is improving, some Some beautiful clouds with cold air

:25:08. > :25:13.descending from aloft. Tomorrow though, will be a day where a fair

:25:14. > :25:18.part of it will be characterised by dry weather. As we get through to

:25:19. > :25:25.the evening, it is Groundhog Day. Again, another thoroughly wet and

:25:26. > :25:33.windy spell. For the time being this rain is moving away from us.

:25:34. > :25:41.Some showers speeding in behind Light dusting is of snow. Some hail

:25:42. > :25:47.as well which has been tricky on the roads. We will still get some hail

:25:48. > :25:52.feeding in from the west. As we run through the course of the night it

:25:53. > :25:57.should be less of a feature. There should be dry and initially quite

:25:58. > :26:01.bright weather. That will change into the evening. You will see the

:26:02. > :26:07.isobars tightening up and a familiar story to yesterday. Winds just as

:26:08. > :26:16.wrong and as much rainfall I suspect. For the rest of the night,

:26:17. > :26:23.the greater concern is ice. We have a yellow warning for ice across the

:26:24. > :26:28.Cotswolds. Untreated roads, 200 metres up, could be a bit dicey by

:26:29. > :26:38.tomorrow morning. Some showers still around. Temperature is could get

:26:39. > :26:41.down to freezing. `` temperatures. A chilly start tomorrow. Some showers

:26:42. > :26:45.speeding in from the West but they become less of a feature as the

:26:46. > :26:50.morning goes on. Bright weather about before the cloud begins up,

:26:51. > :26:55.the winds pick up, and outbreaks of rain by afternoon. More certainly so

:26:56. > :27:05.by the evening as the wave dominates the pattern. Through the night and

:27:06. > :27:10.into Saturday it looks wet. Temperatures tomorrow will be up on

:27:11. > :27:16.today at nine or 10 Celsius. As we looked through the course of the

:27:17. > :27:24.week, heavy rain on Monday. Decidedly windy as well.

:27:25. > :27:30.week, heavy rain on Monday. Decidedly windy as Now it's time to

:27:31. > :27:37.open our advent calendar. Taken by Bill Ovel ` it's another sunset

:27:38. > :27:41.this time in Charmy Down near Bath. Beautiful, thank you. Thank you for

:27:42. > :27:43.all your photos. We will see you at 10pm. Otherwise, we are back

:27:44. > :28:14.tomorrow, goodbye. Me and Alan don't always

:28:15. > :28:17.play by the rules. I think perhaps we should

:28:18. > :28:21.never mention it again. I'm getting wed again. I hope that's

:28:22. > :28:26.all right. Ready when you are, kid.
