:00:00. > :00:08.Good evening. it is time for the news where
:00:09. > :00:11.Good evening. The Royal Marines have been called
:00:12. > :00:16.in to Somerset tonight to help stop water pouring into people's homes as
:00:17. > :00:19.more heavy rain hits the region Two severe flood warnings remain in
:00:20. > :00:23.place on the Somerset Levels, where more than 40 homes have now fallen
:00:24. > :00:27.victim to the rising floodwaters. Well, let's get the latest picture
:00:28. > :00:34.from Jon Kay who's been in the centre of the worst`hit areas.
:00:35. > :00:41.This is the first time we have seen the military boots on the ground in
:00:42. > :00:46.action as part of the response to this flooding crisis in Somerset.
:00:47. > :00:52.These guys are from 40 commando Royal Marines, sandbagging here
:00:53. > :00:55.There were taking `` they are protecting property and trying to
:00:56. > :01:00.prevent the river from over spelling and damaging homes. Let's speak to
:01:01. > :01:07.Captain Tristram Stuart. Can you tell us what is happening tonight.
:01:08. > :01:09.The Royal Navy alongside Navy counterparts in working with
:01:10. > :01:13.Somerset County Council and assessing and looking at the floods
:01:14. > :01:20.here and to military can be used. Last Thursday, we were stood up to
:01:21. > :01:26.react to any issues in any way we can help. Today at 1600 we were
:01:27. > :01:30.given our fast task and that was here as you have said. We are
:01:31. > :01:37.looking to sandbag this area to ensure no flooding continues. If we
:01:38. > :01:40.turn in this way, I can show you the river is... Well, it is incredibly
:01:41. > :01:45.full. It should be much further back here but it is hard to see, although
:01:46. > :01:49.it is right next to us here. That is why it is so important these
:01:50. > :01:56.properties are protected. Captain, tell me, will we see more of this?
:01:57. > :02:00.This is the first task we have been given and we will see if any more
:02:01. > :02:03.comes. The most important thing is that Somerset and the county has
:02:04. > :02:07.been so helpful to us and really supported us through the deployment.
:02:08. > :02:13.For us to give back to the community is a fantastic opportunity for us.
:02:14. > :02:18.How long will this take? We have been here for 2`3 hours. We are
:02:19. > :02:24.making for one more truckload to come and then we will wait for
:02:25. > :02:28.further tasking. Let me show you the most grateful people around. This is
:02:29. > :02:33.the home right next to the River Tone. That is what this is about.
:02:34. > :02:37.Protecting not just as property but many others along this river.
:02:38. > :02:40.For those living in the midst of miles and miles of standing water,
:02:41. > :02:43.every day has become a constant battle against rising levels. Our
:02:44. > :02:46.reporter Scott Ellis has spent the day in North Moor where people have
:02:47. > :02:56.been struggling to keep their homes safe and they're simply not winning.
:02:57. > :03:00.Suddenly it is the time of the motherland and Ford gates to try and
:03:01. > :03:04.stop floodlighting. The nearby River Parrett rose eight inches
:03:05. > :03:10.overnight. The River Tone is at an all`time high. No wonder tempers
:03:11. > :03:18.flare. You want to go and see how bad it is, it would make you cry.
:03:19. > :03:21.There is a bloody fortune being paid and they are not doing anything I
:03:22. > :03:29.tell you what, it makes you wonder why do you bother farming. This area
:03:30. > :03:33.is all but cut off to all but the emergency services. Nearby,
:03:34. > :03:39.residents stayed overnight despite warnings. With more rain on the way,
:03:40. > :03:43.others decided to leave today. It is terrible. I have never been through
:03:44. > :03:46.this before. My neighbours lived in the village for over 40 years and
:03:47. > :03:54.have never seen anything like it before. The advice from the police
:03:55. > :03:59.is still to leave. This woman says she will stay until her house
:04:00. > :04:08.floods. We have power but we cannot use the toilets. We cannot shower.
:04:09. > :04:11.It is difficult but we are coping. We join this local council as he
:04:12. > :04:20.returned to his home this morning to find it a wash. I feel just the same
:04:21. > :04:24.as any other resident. Totally let down by successive governments who
:04:25. > :04:29.have not letting `` putting money into flood relief in this area. The
:04:30. > :04:33.Environment Agency says it welcomes the ?10 million pledged by the
:04:34. > :04:38.Government to tackle flooding on the Somerset levels. But that will help
:04:39. > :04:42.only in future years. Here, the problems are more immediate. Rain is
:04:43. > :04:46.once again on the horizon. Scott Ellis reporting.
:04:47. > :04:51.Also today, farmers on the levels have been scrambling to save their
:04:52. > :04:55.livestock from the floods. More than 500 cattle were evacuated from James
:04:56. > :04:58.Winslade's farm in Moorlands. They were taken to dry land at Sedgemoor
:04:59. > :05:01.Auction Centre where they're being kept as a temporary measure. The
:05:02. > :05:05.whole situation was treacherous as the floodwaters made it impossible
:05:06. > :05:08.to tell roads and ditches apart The farmers said they desperately needed
:05:09. > :05:12.outside help but none was forthcoming.
:05:13. > :05:14.Flood defences are also being put into action in Wiltshire this
:05:15. > :05:17.evening. Special fencing and pumps have been deployed in
:05:18. > :05:20.Bradford`on`Avon to protect homes and businesses on Silver Street
:05:21. > :05:26.many of which were flooded just before Christmas. Water levels are
:05:27. > :05:30.expected to peak there on the River Avon around ten o'clock tomorrow
:05:31. > :05:33.morning. An aristocrat from Gloucestershire
:05:34. > :05:38.has been jailed for two years for assaulting his wife over a 20`year
:05:39. > :05:41.period. Lord Edward Somerset, who's the second son of the Duke of
:05:42. > :05:48.Beaufort, appeared at Bristol Crown Court where he was described as an
:05:49. > :05:51.alcoholic and drug addict. The 55`year`old had kicked and punched
:05:52. > :05:55.his wife, pulled her hair and scratched her. The judge ordered him
:05:56. > :05:57.not to contact her. Troops from the 2nd Royal Tank
:05:58. > :06:02.Regiment paraded through Bristol today to mark their return from
:06:03. > :06:05.Afghanistan. The Wiltshire`based regiment spent seven months in the
:06:06. > :06:11.country, helping the Afghan army as they prepare to take over the
:06:12. > :06:14.country at the end of this year There's more news and information
:06:15. > :06:18.online and on your BBC local radio station. They'll have the latest on
:06:19. > :06:21.the flooding. We'll be back in Breakfast tomorrow morning, but now
:06:22. > :06:27.let's take a look at the weather forecast with Ian.
:06:28. > :06:32.The amber warning from the Met Office for heavy rain continues
:06:33. > :06:36.through the course tomorrow and indeed into the weekend. For the
:06:37. > :06:41.time being, the rainfall radar has been showing the extent of the
:06:42. > :06:46.green. This next cluster is coming up and looks like it will track into
:06:47. > :06:51.the catchment for the Levels with heavy rainfall. Temperatures down to
:06:52. > :06:57.4`5 Celsius. Tomorrow, the rain will clear away with windy conditions
:06:58. > :07:02.first thing. A vastly improved story all`round during daylight hours
:07:03. > :07:06.Sony weathers and it will `` it is sunny and it will feel quite
:07:07. > :07:09.pleasant. Rain will start to move on from the West again into the course
:07:10. > :07:15.of the evening. Temperatures tomorrow for what it is worth around
:07:16. > :07:20.8`9 Celsius. Looking further ahead, again, all focus on these amber
:07:21. > :07:23.warnings. The vein is an issue on Friday and Saturday but the winds in
:07:24. > :07:38.particular are problematic. To Hello. I think the impact of this
:07:39. > :07:39.wet weather could be felt more widely as time goes
