:00:00. > 3:59:59reputation enhanced. That's it. Starting on BBC Two now,
:00:00. > :00:16.Jeremy Paxman asks Good evening ` The Environment
:00:17. > :00:21.Agency has launched its latest effort to rid the Somerset Levels of
:00:22. > :00:25.water. Huge pumps have been shipped in from Holland and dams have been
:00:26. > :00:29.built to protect homes, ahead of an ambitious plan to open one of the
:00:30. > :00:38.main sluice gates on the moors. But it could put homes at risk. Scott
:00:39. > :00:43.Ellis is there tonight. Yes, the engineers are beavering away in the
:00:44. > :00:54.darkness, working away. They have high volume pumps here and the big
:00:55. > :01:02.plan is to pump all the water here to the other side, onto the Moors,
:01:03. > :01:07.and out to the sea. If you start moving water around the Moors,
:01:08. > :01:12.somebody somewhere else could lose out. These are the giant Dutch pumps
:01:13. > :01:17.that it is hoped will ease flooding on the Somerset Levels. They take
:01:18. > :01:26.water away from the swollen River Parrot. It will be pumped north out
:01:27. > :01:33.to sea. It means opening a sluice gate on the River Parrot. That
:01:34. > :01:40.worries some residents, like Ron Smith. His house has flooded four
:01:41. > :01:45.times since Christmas and he is worried that when the Environment
:01:46. > :01:51.Agency opens the sluice gate, water will spill on land, perilously close
:01:52. > :01:55.to his house. We are sacrificial lambs. There was no question about
:01:56. > :01:59.it. They have to give it a guarantee that if the outcome goes wrong, they
:02:00. > :02:06.will underwrite the value of the property. A dam is being built to
:02:07. > :02:12.protect homes from the threat of floods but there are no guarantees.
:02:13. > :02:19.It is an uncertain business but we will do our best to protect these
:02:20. > :02:29.homes and properties. Is Ron writes to be worried? Yes. All the
:02:30. > :02:33.residents are worried. The Environment Agency said it will open
:02:34. > :02:39.the sluice gate slowly and the water will be monitored. They say they
:02:40. > :02:43.need to ease the pressure on the river to prevent flooding. The
:02:44. > :02:51.Environment Agency have said to Ron that they will guarantee his home
:02:52. > :02:55.will not floods but he wants it in writing and he is even considering
:02:56. > :03:00.an injunction to stop them opening the sluice gate. We have had 56
:03:01. > :03:07.homes and businesses flooded in Gloucestershire tonight and another
:03:08. > :03:11.MP in the region, Nick Clegg, has been in Somerset, and has admitted
:03:12. > :03:18.that the work of the Environment Agency is restricted by spending
:03:19. > :03:21.rules set out by the Treasury. Will they be relaxed in the future or
:03:22. > :03:28.will they be able to afford these high volume pumps? The plan is to
:03:29. > :03:32.switch them on on Wednesday. Thank you. And you can get the latest on
:03:33. > :03:39.the floods in your area on your local BBC Radio stations and the BBC
:03:40. > :03:42.Website. In other news ` It's emerged that six lions have been put
:03:43. > :03:46.down at Longleat safari park in Wiltshire. One male lion was said to
:03:47. > :03:49.have been badly injured in a fight, the others, a lioness and four cubs,
:03:50. > :03:53.had genetic disorders. Park managers said because of those disorders and
:03:54. > :03:56.an increase in the lion population, putting them to sleep was the
:03:57. > :04:05.responsible thing to do. Will Glennon has been speaking to the
:04:06. > :04:11.parks Director of Animal Operations. On the 7th of January, Henry was
:04:12. > :04:16.beaten up by his brother. The wound that was sustained it was so severe
:04:17. > :04:21.that, despite treatment, we felt we could not return to normal life and
:04:22. > :04:29.we humanely euthanasia him on a welfare grounds. What about the
:04:30. > :04:33.others? They had progressive neurological diseases and they had
:04:34. > :04:39.been slowly getting worse. The Cubs got to around 12 months of age and
:04:40. > :04:46.they had similar signs so we thought it was a genetic disease. They were
:04:47. > :04:51.getting worse and we could not give them a good quality of life. Some
:04:52. > :04:54.welfare groups are saying that you should not have been breeding from
:04:55. > :05:04.the Weezer in the first place if there were problems. I agree. ``
:05:05. > :05:13.Louisa. It is something we do choose but in the case of the Louise, she
:05:14. > :05:21.was OK genetically but it only became apparent that her jeans were
:05:22. > :05:26.leading to this problem and it was not nutritional, and it was a
:05:27. > :05:32.genetic problem. That is why the decision was made, as sad as it was.
:05:33. > :05:36.The lioness was not read here at Longleat but was born in
:05:37. > :05:43.Cambridgeshire and then transferred to North Somerset before arriving
:05:44. > :05:53.here. `` she was not read here. `` read. There was some good news for
:05:54. > :05:55.the west's digital entrepreneurs today. Two million pounds was
:05:56. > :06:09.invested in new high`tech firms and there was a
:06:10. > :06:13.royal visit as well. Prince Andrew came to Bristol to see a centre for
:06:14. > :06:18.a brand`new web design firms. It is important to see the people
:06:19. > :06:21.themselves. And you can see the full interview with Prince Andrew on our
:06:22. > :06:24.Facebook page. There's more news on the BBC Website. We'll be back in
:06:25. > :06:28.Breakfast tomorrow. But now let s take a look at the weather with Ian.
:06:29. > :06:32.Breakfast tomorrow. But now let s take a look at Thank you. We have
:06:33. > :06:34.just learned that First Great Western have announced there will be
:06:35. > :06:39.disruption on the line between Paddington and Reading juju
:06:40. > :06:46.flooding. Do bear that in mind if you are heading that way. We have
:06:47. > :06:53.more rain on the way. `` due to flooding. It will be wet and on
:06:54. > :06:59.Wednesday night we will have the potential for strong and damaging
:07:00. > :07:04.winds. We could see gusts of 80 mph, possibly more than that. A lot of
:07:05. > :07:09.detail to be fine tuned. Temperatures down to two or three
:07:10. > :07:16.Celsius until 4am. After that, the rain will sweep westwards. Some
:07:17. > :07:20.squaw Lee gusts of wind is and through the afternoon it will be
:07:21. > :07:24.dry, right and chilly. A few showers around, some turning wintry
:07:25. > :07:31.overnight, particularly in Gloucestershire. Temperatures about
:07:32. > :07:37.six or seven. Here is the outlook. Louise will tell
:07:38. > :07:45.Good evening. You have my permission to complain about too many repeats
:07:46. > :07:49.with the British weather at the moment because yet again it looks as
:07:50. > :07:54.though our winter weather is set to continue with a repeat of last week.
:07:55. > :07:58.Sunny spells and scattered showers today and this is the next area of
:07:59. > :08:07.low pressure pushing in from the west. It influences our weather for
:08:08. > :08:14.the rest of the week. More rain to come and gales and severe gales to
:08:15. > :08:22.come. Ice is a possible risk. That means a cumulative total perhaps or
:08:23. > :08:26.40-70 millimetres and that is an extra two to three inches. It will
:08:27. > :08:31.exacerbate the flooding we have already got across England at the
:08:32. > :08:37.moment. The cloud, wind and rain is already pushing in from the west.
:08:38. > :08:42.There will be a widespread frost. Ice could be a problem first thing
:08:43. > :08:47.in Northern Ireland. Snow in the hills and maybe in the North East of
:08:48. > :08:53.Scotland we could see snow at lower levels. Rain through northern
:08:54. > :08:59.England and Wales and Somerset. Some of that rain could be quite intense
:09:00. > :09:03.coupled with squally, gusty winds on exposed coasts. In the east it
:09:04. > :09:10.starts off relatively dry, but it will not be long before the wind and
:09:11. > :09:15.the rain spreads further east. Up into the North the snow showers
:09:16. > :09:20.continue on the hills, but by the end of the afternoon we could see
:09:21. > :09:26.wet snow even at lower levels. A cold day. There is a potential for
:09:27. > :09:31.some snow showers at lower levels across England and Wales on Tuesday
:09:32. > :09:35.night and into Wednesday. On Wednesday it is this area of low
:09:36. > :09:41.pressure which is the main factor in Wednesday's weather. More wet and
:09:42. > :09:46.windy weather. An early amber warning has already been issued from
:09:47. > :09:51.the South West. Severe gales are likely as we continue to see some
:09:52. > :09:57.very wet weather coming into central and southern areas. The strongest
:09:58. > :10:00.winds follow in behind those showers. In Scotland you are
:10:01. > :10:02.probably wondering what the
