:00:00. > 3:59:59almost 80 mph work recorded. In Devon, the storm brought 40

:00:00. > :00:14.millimetres of rain Good evening. The West is being

:00:15. > :00:18.battered by more heavy rain and high winds tonight after yet another day

:00:19. > :00:27.of storms. Jon Kay has spent the day on the Somerset Levels and joins us

:00:28. > :00:32.now. Jon, how's it looking? It is horrible and very gusty here.

:00:33. > :00:36.We have had all sorts of problems along our coastline will stop here

:00:37. > :00:40.on the Somerset Levels, these areas that are normally surrounded by

:00:41. > :00:44.fields, which are now full of water. The wind has been ripping it

:00:45. > :00:50.up so we have seen waves racing across the countryside. It has been

:00:51. > :00:55.quite a sight. A couple of miles in that direction is Moorland, where we

:00:56. > :01:00.have reported from a lot in the last few weeks. Scott Ellis reports from

:01:01. > :01:07.their, where the water is still rising.

:01:08. > :01:11.The waters are still rising. Most residents left a week ago. Today,

:01:12. > :01:17.some returned to check their homes. How was it? It is not great. The

:01:18. > :01:22.police can access the flooded homes of Moorland to retrieve possessions

:01:23. > :01:26.for residents forced to live elsewhere. These wartime medals are

:01:27. > :01:32.now safe from the invading floodwater. I've come to realise

:01:33. > :01:37.that if you can go in for them and wing out one thing. I brought out a

:01:38. > :01:41.bottle of wine for the gentleman who is with us today. It is a bottle of

:01:42. > :01:44.wine that some friends in Canada sent to them. That means the world

:01:45. > :01:51.to them. It makes them feel more at home. The Royal Marines are now

:01:52. > :01:58.here, helping to sandbag the last of the dry homes here in Moorland. They

:01:59. > :02:02.have built up the mud banks and it is starting to wear away with the

:02:03. > :02:07.water, so we are reinforcing it with sandbags, try to make it more

:02:08. > :02:13.substantial. So that it doesn't wash away. How pleased I you to see the

:02:14. > :02:16.Royal Marines? At last! We have been runners them since the start.

:02:17. > :02:21.Yesterday, they came and looked but they could not guarantee it because

:02:22. > :02:25.they could get posted elsewhere I hope that they will not say that

:02:26. > :02:30.elsewhere is more important than here. In all, 15 residents remain in

:02:31. > :02:35.Moorland, holding back the water with dams and pumps. A barricade

:02:36. > :02:47.against the weather. If we can get through tonight, then hopefully

:02:48. > :02:49.Sunday will be better. They are exhausted, physically and

:02:50. > :02:53.emotionally but they say it is worth it because by being here they feel

:02:54. > :02:59.the authorities will not abandon the village altogether. Scott Ellis

:03:00. > :03:03.reporting there from Moorland. The trouble is, despite the pumps that

:03:04. > :03:07.have been brought in, that are skirting the water into the sea the

:03:08. > :03:11.rate that is falling from the sky more than makes up for it. Water

:03:12. > :03:19.levels are still rising here tonight. There are concerns over the

:03:20. > :03:26.weekend about how rich water `` how Bridgwater might cope. The wind is

:03:27. > :03:32.the biggest problem. Our cameraman's hat just blew off in the

:03:33. > :03:35.latest gust! It's been a tense day in

:03:36. > :03:38.Gloucestershire, with concerns the River Severn could burst it's banks

:03:39. > :03:41.and breach flood defences. So far, that hasn't happened, but a severe

:03:42. > :03:45.flood warning remains in place along the River Severn in the city and

:03:46. > :03:47.people are being told to be vigilant.

:03:48. > :03:50.In other news tonight, an inquiry's to be held into the deaths of

:03:51. > :03:53.children after heart surgery at Bristol's children's hospital. It

:03:54. > :03:56.follows concerns by parents about the care given to their children.

:03:57. > :03:59.Our Health Correspondent, Matthew Hill, reports.

:04:00. > :04:02.Some these families had travelled from as far as Cornwall to find

:04:03. > :04:07.answers to questions that still haunt them following their child's

:04:08. > :04:10.death. Last November saw the first of several inquests into deaths of

:04:11. > :04:15.children who'd had heart surgery at the region's specialist cardiac unit

:04:16. > :04:18.in Bristol. The father of one of them, seven`year`old Sean Turner

:04:19. > :04:28.from Wiltshire, was instrumental in making today's meeting with the

:04:29. > :04:34.doctor in charge of the NHS happen. One Sunday morning, I picked up the

:04:35. > :04:40.paper, read a horrific story, with regard to Bristol's cardiac unit,

:04:41. > :04:43.asked Sir Bruce Keogh to pick up the reins and sort this mess out. After

:04:44. > :04:49.a three`hour meeting, parents came out with a smile on their faces It

:04:50. > :04:55.was a really promising meeting. He has agreed to get Ian Kennedy back

:04:56. > :04:57.in to review the hospital, so we feel quite pleased that something

:04:58. > :05:02.has come of today and hopefully we are looking to `` they will

:05:03. > :05:06.hopefully look into our concerns. The Medical Director of the NHS Sir

:05:07. > :05:10.Bruce Keogh, told me this will be an inquiry by the parents, but led by

:05:11. > :05:15.Sir Ian Kennedy, who investigated the unecessary deaths of dozens of

:05:16. > :05:22.babies in the 1990s. We have heard some very harrowing stories in a

:05:23. > :05:29.very dignified way from the Hamleys. He understands the issues and he can

:05:30. > :05:35.hit the ground running `` from the families. We want this to be one of

:05:36. > :05:38.the best units in the country as quickly as possible. In a statement,

:05:39. > :05:41.the hospital say they are troubled that families continue to have

:05:42. > :05:44.concerns and they hope today's meeting will help resolve their

:05:45. > :05:47.issues. They stress their results have been shown to be safe but that

:05:48. > :05:50.they have made improvements which include better communication with

:05:51. > :05:52.families. But, with this new inquiry, this is by no means the end

:05:53. > :05:59.of the matter. There were celebrations at Bath

:06:00. > :06:02.University this evening as one of their own, Lizzy Yarnold, stormed to

:06:03. > :06:07.victory in the women's skeleton at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Back

:06:08. > :06:09.home in Bath, her team manager says he's certain Lizzy would have

:06:10. > :06:16.remained focused while competing in the biggest contest of her life She

:06:17. > :06:19.will have followed her normal race routines, not changed anything wrong

:06:20. > :06:25.what she normally does during the season. She would have done what she

:06:26. > :06:31.normally does. I am sure you would have accepted her to win. But by a

:06:32. > :06:36.second? We are surprised by the overall result.

:06:37. > :06:39.There's more news and information on your local BBC Radio stations and

:06:40. > :06:40.online. But now let's get the latest weather with Ian Fergusson.

:06:41. > :06:44.There's more news and information on your local BBC Good evening. It will

:06:45. > :06:49.remain distinctive wild as we head into the weekend. Met Office amber

:06:50. > :06:53.warnings still in force on the south coast and yellow warnings elsewhere

:06:54. > :06:56.throughout the day tomorrow. Even the yellow areas, it does

:06:57. > :07:01.potentially up to six T5 master hour. They will turn more westerly

:07:02. > :07:05.as the night wears on. Temperatures down to between five and seven

:07:06. > :07:11.Celsius. A decidedly windy start to tomorrow. Heavy showers, some hail

:07:12. > :07:16.as well. A slow improvement into the afternoon. The wind will gradually

:07:17. > :07:20.lessen, the showers lesson as well, particularly as we head into the

:07:21. > :07:24.evening. Temperatures tomorrow between seven and eight Celsius I

:07:25. > :07:28.will leave you with the outlook a better day to come on Sunday. By the

:07:29. > :07:31.end of Sunday, they will be some further rain coming in from the west

:07:32. > :07:33.and that will set us up for a wet day on Monday.

:07:34. > :07:38.will leave you with the weekend summary for London. Let's go to the

:07:39. > :07:46.weather centre to get the national forecast.

:07:47. > :07:50.Our love hate relationship with the weather has become unbalanced this

:07:51. > :07:55.winter, I suspect there is not a lot of love left. Today's storm has not

:07:56. > :08:01.helped. It gave us 20 to 30 millimetres of rain. Snow in the

:08:02. > :08:04.past few hours at lower levels in eastern Scotland. That should turn

:08:05. > :08:08.to rain again but the blizzards in the Scottish mountains will

:08:09. > :08:12.continue. This evening, it has been the wind which has been most

:08:13. > :08:17.disruptive in southern England. Met Office amber warning remains in

:08:18. > :08:20.force with gusts up to 80 miles an hour along the south coast producing

:08:21. > :08:25.big waves crashing into the shoreline. Dangerous conditions and

:08:26. > :08:30.more coastal flooding. Inland, winds 50 to 60 miles an hour up the

:08:31. > :08:32.Bristol Channel and other southern counties. Trees
