:00:00. > :00:15.chilly old week, George. Rais thank you. That's all

:00:16. > :00:43.Also tonight: South African authorities say Shrien Dewani will

:00:44. > :00:46.be extradited to face trial. We find out what next for the Bristol

:00:47. > :00:50.businessman. The hole problem ` as counchls get

:00:51. > :00:55.money to fix potholes, we hdar from one victim who fell foul of one

:00:56. > :01:05.And we find why the worlds biggest boy band are here in Clevedon.

:01:06. > :01:10.Good evening. The owners of Cotswold Airport have been found guilty of

:01:11. > :01:14.breaching health and safety guidelines that resulted in the

:01:15. > :01:18.death of the airport's fire chief. Steve Mills was killed when a gas

:01:19. > :01:22.cylinder he was moving back in April 2011 exploded. Today a jury at

:01:23. > :01:26.Gloucester Crown Court decided that Kemble Air Services had failed to

:01:27. > :01:31.put guidelines in place for the safe use of the cylinders. Our

:01:32. > :01:40.Gloucestershire reporter Stdve Knibbs is at the court for ts now.

:01:41. > :01:44.Thanks very much. It was cldar listening to this case that Steve

:01:45. > :01:49.Mills was a much loved colldague and friend of many people at thd

:01:50. > :01:53.airport. He was also a retahned firefighter in Wiltshire. There was

:01:54. > :01:56.a phrase that kept cropping up ` leave it to Steve. It meant that

:01:57. > :02:00.every project and initiativd he worked on, he did to the best of his

:02:01. > :02:04.ability and in a profession`l way. It was three years ago whild he was

:02:05. > :02:07.working alone on such a project Steve Mills was described bx

:02:08. > :02:11.colleagues as competent and experienced. That he lost hhs life.

:02:12. > :02:16.He went into work on his dax off to strip out equipment from shhpping

:02:17. > :02:19.containers donated by the MoD. As he moved a gas cylinder like this one,

:02:20. > :02:23.it apparently fell and exploded as the mechanism was triggered. In

:02:24. > :02:26.court it was described as a large and fatal Catherine wheel as it span

:02:27. > :02:32.out of control at high speed. Steve Mills suffered catastrophic head

:02:33. > :02:35.injuries. He was discovered by a colleague. A safety cap likd this

:02:36. > :02:38.one, which would have stoppdd the gas escaping, wasn't fitted. Steve

:02:39. > :02:42.Mills hadn't told anyone at the airport he was moving the cxlinders

:02:43. > :02:45.and was working alone. But despite that, the company that employed him

:02:46. > :02:52.was today found guilty of not assessing the risk. Steve w`s in

:02:53. > :02:56.charge of the project but ultimately he was a company employee and it's

:02:57. > :03:01.the company's responsibilitx to manage this because it was for the

:03:02. > :03:03.company's benefit. So while he was doing the physical actions the

:03:04. > :03:09.company should have monitordd how we work. Kemble Air Services s`y

:03:10. > :03:13.they're disappointed at the verdict as they believed no risk assessment

:03:14. > :03:16.was needed as there were no plans to move any of the cylinders. Dveryone

:03:17. > :03:18.has to learn these incidents. There's always room for improvement

:03:19. > :03:21.and we're taking everything on board. We have reviewed our

:03:22. > :03:26.procedures and implemented some changes but deep down, I don't

:03:27. > :03:28.believe we failed Steve in `ny way. But the jury came back with the

:03:29. > :03:33.verdict that they thought w`s appropriate. It hasn't brought Steve

:03:34. > :03:36.back. We still miss him dearly at the airport every day. He w`s part

:03:37. > :03:43.of the family and it has hit us very hard. Steve's family were in court

:03:44. > :03:47.and afterwards his father rdad a short statement. In my opinhon, no

:03:48. > :03:53.individual person is responsible for the death of my son. In my opinion,

:03:54. > :03:59.a series of minor irregularhties leading up to a major event resulted

:04:00. > :04:02.in the accident. His attitude in life was to achieve perfecthon on

:04:03. > :04:06.anything he undertook to colplete. Time is a good healer but Steve will

:04:07. > :04:11.be sadly missed for many ye`rs to come. The company will be b`ck in

:04:12. > :04:16.court in the near future to be sentenced and are likely to face a

:04:17. > :04:19.six`figure fine. These shipping containers wdre

:04:20. > :04:22.supplied to the airport by the Ministry of Defence. They come from

:04:23. > :04:28.Bosnia and were being stored at a depot near chicks breathe. The MoD

:04:29. > :04:34.say it is routine to supply equipment in this way. Therd were

:04:35. > :04:38.safety notices up about how the gas cylinders should have been handled.

:04:39. > :04:45.Gloucestershire police Toby today that they have their cylinddrs

:04:46. > :04:49.decommissioned and safely rdmoved. `` Gloucestershire police told me.

:04:50. > :04:53.Kemble Air Services say thex are disappointed because they ndver

:04:54. > :04:58.realised that the cylinders were going to be moved by Steve Lills.

:04:59. > :05:00.They will be back in court hn a couple of weeks for sentenchng.

:05:01. > :05:05.Victim impact statements were handed to the judge by the prosecution all

:05:06. > :05:09.part of the decisions he has to make when deciding how much of a fine

:05:10. > :05:14.Kemble Air Services will have to pay. The defence costs are `t least

:05:15. > :05:17.?104,000 and there is anothdr six`figure sum on top of th`t as a

:05:18. > :05:21.minimum sentence. That will be decided by the judge in a fdw weeks.

:05:22. > :05:25.A Bristol man accused of hiring a hit man to kill his wife in South

:05:26. > :05:29.Africa looks likely to be extradited to face trial. It was November 010

:05:30. > :05:33.when Shrien Dewani and his new wife Anni were hijacked by gunmen while

:05:34. > :05:37.on honeymoon in the country. Shrien survived, while Anni was drhven away

:05:38. > :05:40.and shot. Mr Dewani, who has suffered serious mental health

:05:41. > :05:46.problems ever since, has always maintained his innocence. Hdre's

:05:47. > :05:49.Andrew Plant. Almost three and a half years since

:05:50. > :06:01.this newly married couple ldft the UK for their honeymoon abro`d. Just

:06:02. > :06:04.24 hours into their trip, their hired taxi was carjacked on a remote

:06:05. > :06:08.South African road. The groom, Shrien, was pulled from the vehicle

:06:09. > :06:11.and bride Anni driven away. She was found dead the next day. A broken

:06:12. > :06:21.man returned to the UK, suffering from depression and post`tr`umatic

:06:22. > :06:24.stress. Almost immediately, the accusations began. Zola Tongo, the

:06:25. > :06:27.driver of their hijacked taxi, was arrested. He confessed to hhs part

:06:28. > :06:30.in the killing and said Shrhen Dewani arranged it all. Shrhen

:06:31. > :06:37.Dewani and his family have been through a long court process. Now

:06:38. > :06:40.all appeals in the UK are over. Still suffering from mental illness,

:06:41. > :06:44.he now faces extradition next month. Shrien Dewani will then need to

:06:45. > :06:47.recover in South Africa before he can finally stand trial ` something

:06:48. > :07:00.Anni's family say is the only way they can ever know what really

:07:01. > :07:04.happened. Joining us now is Nicolas Clough, a

:07:05. > :07:10.criminal lawyer. Is there any chance that this extradition won't happen?

:07:11. > :07:16.There are two possibilities. First of all, if he fronts fresh ledical

:07:17. > :07:19.evidence, Shrien Dewani can go back to the High Court. Then he can go to

:07:20. > :07:23.the European Court of Human Rights and claim his human rights `re being

:07:24. > :07:29.infringed. Is there any point in doing that? There is every point

:07:30. > :07:31.because the European Court have a reputation for overriding British

:07:32. > :07:35.courts and if they decide to take the case, they will issue a rule 39

:07:36. > :07:41.notice which, while it isn't legally binding, will ensure that the

:07:42. > :07:43.British government don't extradite him until the European Court heard

:07:44. > :07:48.the case. In your opinion, hs it likely to go ahead? I think it

:07:49. > :07:53.probably is. He has employed every legal avenue he can since November

:07:54. > :07:57.2010 to avoid being extradited. Now, apparently, he's saying that he is

:07:58. > :08:01.prepared to be extradited. He seems to have turned his mind to the fact

:08:02. > :08:04.that he will go to South Africa A lot of focus will now turn to South

:08:05. > :08:12.Africa if the extradition does go ahead. It will because they have two

:08:13. > :08:18.very high profile cases going on, the Pistorius trial and the Shrien

:08:19. > :08:22.Dewani trial. What will happen? He can't be arrested in this country.

:08:23. > :08:26.He will go on a plane and they have to follow the orders of the court.

:08:27. > :08:29.When he arrives in South Africa he will be arrested by the South

:08:30. > :08:33.African police. They will then take him to a court where he can make an

:08:34. > :08:36.application for bail if he wants to. If that is unsuccessful, he will

:08:37. > :08:43.probably be taken to a secure hospital. Thank you very much.

:08:44. > :08:48.You're welcome. How exciting has your day bden? Have

:08:49. > :08:54.you seen anyone famous? Well, lucky Laura Jones has been at Clevedon,

:08:55. > :08:56.hot on the trail of some superstars. The fans are out in force as

:08:57. > :09:01.Clevedon welcomes the biggest boy band in the world.

:09:02. > :09:06.All that to come. A 15`year`old cyclist from Wiltshire

:09:07. > :09:09.is recovering after he hit ` pothole and ended up in hospital. Ollie Pike

:09:10. > :09:14.was thrown from his bike and suffered a broken collar bone and

:09:15. > :09:17.head injuries. Last week cotncils across the West were given lillions

:09:18. > :09:22.of pounds of government mondy to fix potholes. Just a warning th`t Will

:09:23. > :09:27.Glennon's report begins with pictures of Ollie's injuries.

:09:28. > :09:31.This is what teenage cyclist Ollie Pike looked like after his clash

:09:32. > :09:35.with a pothole. Riding in a competition earlier this month, he

:09:36. > :09:44.swerved to avoid one set of holes but hit another. I didn't sde it.

:09:45. > :09:48.Just smack into the hall, straight over the handlebars. I landdd on my

:09:49. > :09:53.face, rolled back over my shoulder and broke my collarbone. I couldn't

:09:54. > :09:56.see out of my right eye bec`use of the swelling. There was a rhver of

:09:57. > :10:00.blood down the road and then I called an ambulance. I've got

:10:01. > :10:03.Ollie's jacket here that was badly ripped. Ollie's riding shirt and

:10:04. > :10:09.helmet show the force of thd impact. His mum says she's worried dvery

:10:10. > :10:13.time he goes out. I think it's appalling. I do the school runs

:10:14. > :10:18.every day and I travel all the back lanes all the time. I'm constantly

:10:19. > :10:23.trying to avoid potholes and sometimes you can't. If there's an

:10:24. > :10:26.oncoming vehicle, you've got to go in them sometimes. I think the state

:10:27. > :10:30.of the roads is awful and I worry the time. After a record wet winter,

:10:31. > :10:33.the pothole problem has got worse. Millions of pounds has been given to

:10:34. > :10:36.councils for repairs. Wiltshire and Gloucestershire got more th`n ?

:10:37. > :10:41.million. Flood`hit Somerset got ?12 million. Extra crews are already out

:10:42. > :10:46.at work and have been told to finish by the summer. That can't come

:10:47. > :10:54.quickly enough for some motorists. Garages are reporting a ste`dy

:10:55. > :10:59.stream of damaged cars. That tyre has been damaged with impact damage

:11:00. > :11:03.on to curb or a pothole and that has caused this puncher. The tyre is now

:11:04. > :11:08.completely scrapped. Not repairable. And just one pothole can catse a

:11:09. > :11:12.whole range or problems. Yot can get wheel alignment problems, shock

:11:13. > :11:15.absorbers, springs, all sorts of problems due to the impact of the

:11:16. > :11:18.pothole. Ollie Pike's familx have complained to the council about the

:11:19. > :11:22.pothole he hit. He wants to get back on his bike as soon as he's healed,

:11:23. > :11:28.by which time he hopes the roads might have been made a bit safer.

:11:29. > :11:31.A convicted paedophile from Gloucestershire has been jahled for

:11:32. > :11:35.two years in Cambodia for sdxually abusing three young brothers at a

:11:36. > :11:39.hotel in the capital, Pnom Penh Richard Fruin, who is 36, ldft

:11:40. > :11:43.Britain after serving a year in prison for producing child

:11:44. > :11:47.pornography. Fruin was arrested in a guest house in Cambodia last year,

:11:48. > :11:54.where an eight`year`old boy was also found.

:11:55. > :11:57.A district judge has described a town councillor as despicable for

:11:58. > :12:00.stealing more than ?1,200 from the Royal British Legion. Peter Brock,

:12:01. > :12:04.who was the branch chairman of the Legion in Yeovil, wrote out 23

:12:05. > :12:08.cheques to cash while he was a signatory. He's been ordered to pay

:12:09. > :12:21.the money back and do 150 hours of community service.

:12:22. > :12:25.Investigations are continuing into how patient records from Frdnchay

:12:26. > :12:28.Hospital were found on a street in Cardiff. North Bristol NHS Trust,

:12:29. > :12:31.which runs the hospital, sax they don't know how the papers ended up

:12:32. > :12:34.in the centre of the Welsh capital, 40 miles away. The documents were

:12:35. > :12:38.from hospital rounds and contain personal information of 49 patients.

:12:39. > :12:40.In a statement they have offered their sincere apologies and said

:12:41. > :12:44.they will be contacting those affected to explain what happened.

:12:45. > :12:47.Safety procedures are being reviewed at the Royal United Hospital's

:12:48. > :12:51.maternity unit in Bath. It's after two new mothers had swabs ldft

:12:52. > :12:54.inside them last month. Its chief nurse says what's happened hs

:12:55. > :12:59.completely unacceptable and she s issued an apology. The maternity

:13:00. > :13:10.unit is managed by the Great Western Hospital Trust in Swindon.

:13:11. > :13:14.The former Swindon town midfielder Alan McLaughlin has been talking

:13:15. > :13:19.about his battle cancer with. The 46`year`old, seen here playhng at

:13:20. > :13:24.the County ground, is now a coach at Portsmouth. Tonight, he describes

:13:25. > :13:29.the moment two years ago whdn the doctors told him he had kidney

:13:30. > :13:34.cancer. When someone says that word to you, the first thing is fright,

:13:35. > :13:41.its terror. I was frightened to tell my wife and kids. Then the gravity

:13:42. > :13:46.hits you. I was told that it was a tumour in my kidney that had to be

:13:47. > :13:52.removed. Even now it is still a question mark. I got to livd with

:13:53. > :13:56.that. I've had a couple of scans and they have been good. The last thing

:13:57. > :14:04.I want is sympathy. Just cole and meet me head on and ask me how I am

:14:05. > :14:10.and tell you I am fine. You can see the rest of that interview on Late

:14:11. > :14:13.Kick Off tonight on BBC One. Bristol Rugby have signed W`les

:14:14. > :14:16.international Ryan Jones on a two`year contract from the Ospreys.

:14:17. > :14:20.Ryan has just turned 33 and played 75 times for his country, as well as

:14:21. > :14:23.representing the British and Irish Lions. He could feature for Bristol

:14:24. > :14:30.this season if they reach the Championship final and the Ospreys

:14:31. > :14:33.don't make it to their play`offs. After a remarkably mild winter, the

:14:34. > :14:37.arrival of spring seems to be gathering pace ` and we've certainly

:14:38. > :14:40.noticed that in the BBC Bristol garden. Lots of greenery in the

:14:41. > :14:44.background when we've been filming up there ` but has the new season

:14:45. > :14:46.started to take hold? Here's Jules Hyam.

:14:47. > :14:48.It's just four days since spring officially started but nature

:14:49. > :14:51.doesn't really follow the s`me calendar as us. Look, already

:14:52. > :14:56.there's a massive amount of new growth on some of the plants up here

:14:57. > :15:01.in the rooftop garden. But how far exactly has spring sprung? To find

:15:02. > :15:04.out, we've got some help. Two teams today ` our animal hunters `re

:15:05. > :15:06.equipped with insect pots and spotters' guides that we borrowed

:15:07. > :15:18.from the Bristol Natural History Consortium. Our plant experts are

:15:19. > :15:23.raring to go as well. They've got measuring tapes. They've got a

:15:24. > :15:26.camera and some notepads and pens that we borrowed from the stationery

:15:27. > :15:30.cupboard. So to work. Lots of ground to cover but what will the teams

:15:31. > :15:34.find? A lot of ants. Yeah, there's some ants' nests. Yeah, defhnitely.

:15:35. > :15:38.And some bees. I can see a bee. But we couldn't catch it. To be fair,

:15:39. > :15:41.that net is quite tricky and it is rather windy two floors up but that

:15:42. > :15:43.hasn't stopped our plant investigators finding lots of

:15:44. > :15:48.evidence of the gardens bring back to life. `` a garden springhng back

:15:49. > :15:52.to life. We found some plants that have new growth and we found this

:15:53. > :15:56.plant as well. It's really soft and smells nice as well. Plenty of new

:15:57. > :15:59.leaves, even on the kiwi frtit. It really has been quite an untsual

:16:00. > :16:02.winter. You might remember that we came up here in January and all the

:16:03. > :16:05.strawberries actually had strawberries on them. There's still

:16:06. > :16:09.plenty of flowers and some little fruits there but all of this is new.

:16:10. > :16:14.All of that growth has come in the last few days. I think it is a

:16:15. > :16:18.buzzing one. I think it's that one. Our animal team has a probldm.

:16:19. > :16:23.They've got a spider but thd problem is, they're not sure what khnd of

:16:24. > :16:34.spider they've found. I think it's this kind. It is that one. Ht is

:16:35. > :16:37.debatable. It is. It isn't that green. We think it's the large

:16:38. > :16:41.jewelled spider. And we know it s the buzzing spider. We know it's the

:16:42. > :16:44.buzzing spider! We'll leave them to ponder that and have a look at

:16:45. > :16:49.another plant. What are you looking at? These plants. We've found that

:16:50. > :17:05.it's furry. We don't know for what reason yet but it has furthdr all

:17:06. > :17:11.over it. `` has `` it is furry all over. It's very unusual. It's under

:17:12. > :17:15.and on the edges of the leaves. It is a great piece of observation one

:17:16. > 0:10:19of many in just an hour. Ten centimetres of growth on sole

0:10:20 > 0:10:20plants.
