:00:11. > :00:16.Good evening. A Wiltshire policeman who fired a Taser at a naked suspect
:00:17. > :00:21.claimed today he did it to prevent the man assaulting fellow officers.
:00:22. > :00:25.PC Lee Birch denied he was `ngry and upset when he shot Daniel Dove in a
:00:26. > :00:31.police cell in Melksham two years ago. Our Home Affairs Correspondent,
:00:32. > :00:34.Steve Brodie, was in court. PC Lee Birch takes a break from
:00:35. > :00:37.giving evidence in the trial, where the jury have watched CCTV showing
:00:38. > :00:42.him firing a 50,000`volt Taser into the chest of a naked suspect.
:00:43. > :00:46.Defending, Stephen Mooney told the jury, "This is not the prodtct of
:00:47. > :00:49.anger as has been suggested by the prosecution. PC Birch is a
:00:50. > :01:00.confident, calm and well`tr`ined police officer." PC Birch ddscribed
:01:01. > :01:04.to the jury how he and colldagues were called to the Moo Moo night
:01:05. > :01:07.club in Trowbridge on December 3rd 2010. Standing in the witness box,
:01:08. > :01:11.the 30`year`old officer said that Daniel Dove was drunk and there was
:01:12. > :01:14.a struggle in the street before he managed to handcuff him. Whdn Daniel
:01:15. > :01:17.Dove was brought back here to Melksham police station, he was
:01:18. > :01:21.taken into the custody suitd, where he was booked in while handcuffed.
:01:22. > :01:25.During a strip search, Mr Dove took out his mobile phone and took a
:01:26. > :01:28.picture of injuries to his face Stephen Mooney asked PC birch, Did
:01:29. > :01:31.that antagonise you?" "No," he replied. "Did it make you angry "
:01:32. > :01:35."No," he replied again. When asked why he had taken out his Taser when
:01:36. > :01:42.they entered the cell, the policeman said, "I wasn't happy with his

:01:47. > :01:49.been thrown at him and standing just a couple of feet away from his
:01:50. > :01:52.prisoner, PC Birch said, "Obviously, it was an unexpected action. I
:01:53. > :02:01.wanted to prevent him assaulting anyone else." He was also asked if
:02:02. > :02:05.he kept its finger on the trigger. He replied, yes. PC Birch ddnies

:02:13. > :02:17.Honda has announced it will be making compulsory redundanches at
:02:18. > :02:20.its plant in Swindon. The c`r manufacturer needs to cut ndarly 500
:02:21. > :02:23.jobs because of falling salds in Europe. A 191 staff have applied for
:02:24. > :02:27.voluntary redundancy but th`t still leaves a shortfall. The company says
:02:28. > :02:30.it will now work with unions to agree a process for the rest of the
:02:31. > :02:33.job losses. A three`year`old boy from Bristol
:02:34. > :02:38.has donated his bone marrow to save the life of his older brothdr, who
:02:39. > :02:40.has leukaemia for the second time. On their last afternoon at home
:02:41. > :02:43.together before seven`year`old Kenzie spends two months in
:02:44. > :02:51.hospital, they talked to Fiona Lamdin about what lies ahead.
:02:52. > :02:56.Kenzie Rowe doing what he loves best, playing with his brothers out
:02:57. > :03:00.in the sun. But this little boy is incredibly poorly. Tomorrow, he
:03:01. > :03:07.begins eight weeks of treatlent in solitary confinement at the
:03:08. > :03:15.children's hospital. His frhend said to him, " what are you doing? " He
:03:16. > :03:19.said, "I have to have an opdration but if it doesn't work, I h`ve to go
:03:20. > :03:23.to heaven." He should not know things like that. But he dods,
:03:24. > :03:25.because this isn't the first time this seven`year`old has had
:03:26. > :03:29.leukaemia. Just before Christmas, doctors told Kenzie he'd relapsed.
:03:30. > :03:33.And, this time, the only hope of a cure was a bone marrow transplant.
:03:34. > :03:37.His parents and three brothdrs were all tested but the only match was
:03:38. > :03:47.his youngest brother, Chase, who is three ` an almost impossibld
:03:48. > :03:54.position for any parent. It was very difficult. I don't want to do it,
:03:55. > :04:00.personally. Stephen was upsdt. He did not want to put Chase through
:04:01. > :04:03.it. But if it will save Kenzie, you have to make sacrifices. But, once
:04:04. > :04:09.the decision was made, it soon became part of family banter. They
:04:10. > :04:17.argue. When they are arguing, Chase will say to Kenzie, " you are not
:04:18. > :04:20.having my blood! " It is quhte funny. And so, earlier this week,
:04:21. > :04:27.Chase had bone marrow removdd from his back. What did you give Kenzie?
:04:28. > :04:34.Did you give him some of yotr blood? Will that make him better? Xeah Is
:04:35. > :04:39.it good that Chase is giving some of his blood to save your life? Yeah.
:04:40. > :04:47.And to save Kenzie's life is what everyone here is praying for.
:04:48. > :04:51.Almost half a million pounds was spent by the fire service t`ckling
:04:52. > :04:54.the Somerset floods this ye`r. The figures, from the brigade in Devon
:04:55. > :04:58.and Somerset, show nearly h`lf the money went on buying in extra help.
:04:59. > :05:01.But there's been criticism from the union, who say the response from the
:05:02. > :05:07.fire service was uncoordinated and could have been better planned.
:05:08. > :05:10.Tenants who've been told to move off land owned by the state are
:05:11. > :05:14.appealing for the Government to help them. The tenants are living on
:05:15. > :05:17.Crown land, which is technically owned by the Queen, although she
:05:18. > :05:22.doesn't have any say in its running or receive an income from it. Now 45
:05:23. > :05:27.homes are being put up for sale and many of the tenants say thex can't
:05:28. > :05:34.afford to buy them. Awful. It has turned our lives
:05:35. > :05:38.upside down. Couldn't get to sleep, work up in the morning crying. Just
:05:39. > :05:43.the thought of having to le`ve here, where we have been for so
:05:44. > :05:46.long. It is just devastating. We would never find anything lhke this
:05:47. > :05:49.again. The Crown Estate says it s sympathetic but the law dictates
:05:50. > :05:53.that they must operate on a commercial basis.
:05:54. > :05:56.Now, just before we go to the weather, volunteers cleaning up a
:05:57. > :06:00.beach in North Somerset tod`y came across an array of weird and
:06:01. > :06:06.wonderful items. Among the rubbish were old false teeth and a lotorbike
:06:07. > :06:09.chain which had rusted in the ocean. Pupils from a school in
:06:10. > :06:12.Weston`super`Mare worked alongside members of the Marine Conservation
:06:13. > :06:19.Society on Uphill Beach, making it nice and clean for summer.
:06:20. > :06:22.That's the new from across the West tonight. Newsnight is starthng now
:06:23. > :06:26.over on BBC Two. I'm going to wish you goodnhght and
:06:27. > :06:29.leave the last word with Ian, who has the weather forecast for our
:06:30. > :06:35.part of the world. Thank you. Showers and long
:06:36. > :06:38.outbreaks of rain will char`cterise the weather tomorrow. Not
:06:39. > :06:43.everywhere. The distributional closes open to doubt. As a rule of
:06:44. > :06:46.thumb, the further east you are the more you will see of the wet
:06:47. > :06:50.weather. Through tonight, a dry night. There will be a lot of low
:06:51. > :06:55.cloud around across eastern areas. Temperatures hit will be mild, eight
:06:56. > :07:01.or 10 Celsius. Cooler towards the West. Tomorrow morning, manx
:07:02. > :07:05.districts will start on a dry note. Showery outbreaks. To push tp from
:07:06. > :07:10.the south coast and this room of warm air from France. Most of this
:07:11. > :07:16.is towards the east was of the Western bias is under some doubt.
:07:17. > :07:25.Showers will follow one as we go into the evening. By that point
:07:26. > :07:28.many places will be dry. It will remain around 1213 Celsius
:07:29. > :07:29.typically. An unsettled weekend Not raining all the time. Some brighter
:07:30. > :07:36.spells as well. weekend, you can see what is going
:07:37. > :07:39.on. Sunday might be brighter. Now over to Louise Lear for the national
:07:40. > :07:42.weather. Good evening. Today has been a day
:07:43. > :07:46.of sunny spells and a few scattered showers, but where we see the
:07:47. > :07:51.sunshine, we have also seen some warmth, with temperatures in the
:07:52. > :07:57.high teens. A slightly disappointing story across the far north-east of
:07:58. > :08:01.Scotland. We keep that easterly feed through the night to night, but
:08:02. > :08:04.looking out into the Atlantic, we also start to pick up the
:08:05. > :08:07.south-westerly circulate in, and area of low pressure bringing in
:08:08. > :08:17.some blustery winds for the start of the weekend. Tonight it stays mostly
:08:18. > :08:21.dry, with some fog around. And we pick up the risk of a few showers in
:08:22. > :08:27.the far south-east. Clearer skies at the the South West, and cloudy,
:08:28. > :08:33.murky start our day tomorrow the showers gather in strength and then
:08:34. > :08:36.start to march north and west. Some of those showers quite heavy and
:08:37. > :08:38.possibly thundery as well. The further west you go, perhaps away
