:00:07. > :00:12.The crisis at Avon and Somerset Police.

:00:13. > :00:14.The Chief Constable remains suspended after allegations over

:00:15. > :00:26.It's feared the investigation could take months.

:00:27. > :00:31.UWT The investigation of the Chief Constable is a very rare event. The

:00:32. > :00:34.suspension of the Chief Constable is even rarer. I have been trying to

:00:35. > :00:38.recollect the number of times it has happened. It is probably no more

:00:39. > :00:41.than three or four times in the past 20 years.

:00:42. > :00:52.Our other headlines tonight: affected, but is the organisation

:00:53. > :00:55.The young riders hit by a car after a motorist spooked

:00:56. > :01:00.Europe from a different angle ` we speak to people from the continent

:01:01. > :01:13.An artist?s home is put up for sale, but what do you make of the decor?

:01:14. > :01:20.Avon and Somerset Police insisted it was business as usual today

:01:21. > :01:22.after the suspension of the Chief Constable yesterday afternoon.

:01:23. > :01:26.Nick Gargan was sent home after complaints about inappropriate

:01:27. > :01:31.Independent investigators will conduct an inquiry which could go

:01:32. > :01:34.on for months, and there are worries that could

:01:35. > :01:38.The Deputy Chief Constable had planned to give

:01:39. > :01:41.an interview today to reassure the public but he pulled out.

:01:42. > :01:44.Our home affairs correspondent Steve Brodie reports.

:01:45. > :01:47.It was business as usual today at police headquarters,

:01:48. > :01:50.where Acting Chief Constable John Long was in charge

:01:51. > :02:01.but he was too busy to explain where the suspension has left the force.

:02:02. > :02:04.Obviously there was a sense of shock here at Avon and Somerset police

:02:05. > :02:09.headquarters following the sudden suspension of Nick Gargan after what

:02:10. > :02:12.have been described as a number of serious allegations of inappropriate

:02:13. > :02:19.behaviour towards female police officers and staff.

:02:20. > :02:26.It is a neutral act but it is done for the purpose to protect the

:02:27. > :02:29.member of staff. It is there to protect witnesses who might be

:02:30. > :02:33.called upon to give statements. More importantly, for the investigation

:02:34. > :02:37.to take place in a neutral environment. That is without any

:02:38. > :02:42.tension or pressure on anyone. Officers from the

:02:43. > :02:43.Independent Police Complaints Commission were interviewing those

:02:44. > :02:52.involved in the allegations It takes time to complete. That

:02:53. > :02:56.creates a difficulty for the public face of the police force. It creates

:02:57. > :03:01.difficulties for internal cohesion and direction. That is why you have

:03:02. > :03:05.the Chief Constable. They provide leadership and boost morale and

:03:06. > :03:10.provide confidence, strategic direction. The professional and head

:03:11. > :03:14.of service. Having said that, the whole point of having a Deputy Chief

:03:15. > :03:18.Constable is that there is somebody who has been appointed to that post

:03:19. > :03:23.who is capable of taking on the job of Chief Constable in their absence.

:03:24. > :03:26.Nick Gargan was an active follower of social media

:03:27. > :03:29.and rarely out of the limelight since joining the force a year ago.

:03:30. > :03:32.He was never off Twitter, and even just before his suspension

:03:33. > :03:37.The chairman of the Police Federation in Somerset told the BBC:

:03:38. > :03:41.It is right that these allegations are investigated and it is the right

:03:42. > :03:46.The IPCC, whose officers are carrying out the investigation,

:03:47. > :03:49.refused to confirm the exact number of women officers and police staff

:03:50. > :03:57.who have claimed to be victims of the alleged inappropriate behaviour.

:03:58. > :04:00.A law graduate who's accused of falsely claiming she'd been

:04:01. > :04:04.raped multiple times has been giving evidence in court.

:04:05. > :04:08.Rhiannon Brooker was studying at UWE when she made the claims.

:04:09. > :04:11.Her boyfriend spent more than a month in jail before being released.

:04:12. > :04:15.She's now facing 20 charges of perverting the course of justice.

:04:16. > :04:25.Rihannon Brooker leaving court today after giving evidence

:04:26. > :04:29.In 2008, she was a student here at Birmingham City University

:04:30. > :04:33.She began a relationship with a 46`year`old man who she would

:04:34. > :04:41.Paul Fensome ` a railway signalman ` was in custody for 36 days

:04:42. > :04:43.before Rihannon Brooker, interviewed under caution by police,

:04:44. > :04:46.said the claims were an invention and Mr Fensome was finally freed.

:04:47. > :04:51.Miss Brookes was charged with perverting the course of justice

:04:52. > :04:57.But surprisingly, perhaps, she pleaded not guilty and now

:04:58. > :05:11.claims the accusations against her former boyfriend were correct.

:05:12. > :05:16.In court today, she said she was aware that things were wrong in

:05:17. > :05:19.their relationship but still a strong feelings towards him even

:05:20. > :05:24.though she told friends he could be violent. Rhiannon Brooker denies all

:05:25. > :05:29.20 charges of perverting the course of justice. A trial he that Bristol

:05:30. > :05:42.Crown Court could last for several more weeks.

:05:43. > :05:46.Three young girls from Somerset have spoken of the terrifying moment a

:05:47. > :05:49.motorist spooked their ponies before hitting two of them. The police are

:05:50. > :05:53.now trying to hunt down the driver who left the scene with a smashed

:05:54. > :05:54.windscreen. Michelle Ruminski reports.

:05:55. > :05:58.They went past and they did not like it. We have to build it up again

:05:59. > :06:04.thanks to the driver. Facing their fears after a

:06:05. > :06:06.frightening ordeal. Today Madi, Caitlin, Danni and their horses had

:06:07. > :06:10.to be led back out onto the road. The girls say they were riding their

:06:11. > :06:14.ponies up this lane in Upper Cheddon when a car started revving its

:06:15. > :06:24.engine and doing wheel spins. The He was coming towards us at speed.

:06:25. > :06:26.We did the slowdown sign and the stop sign. We did big gestures and

:06:27. > :06:31.he did not listen. The car then hit two of the ponies.

:06:32. > :06:35.Startled, one of them backed up, its hooves smashing the windscreen on

:06:36. > :06:38.the passenger side. The car made off towards Taunton, leaving the girls

:06:39. > :06:50.to fend for themselves. The girls were hysterical and

:06:51. > :06:54.totally in shock. I was shaking and when I got off the pony, it was a

:06:55. > :07:00.bit scary. The girls managed to stay on their

:07:01. > :07:04.ponies. Only Belatrix suffered a bruise. But their parents say the

:07:05. > :07:07.girls and the horse could have been killed and are keen to find the

:07:08. > :07:16.person who did this. The police say The man should be ashamed of

:07:17. > :07:25.himself. I do not think I should comment on camera. I hope this

:07:26. > :07:31.passion as a guilty conscious. I am very very angry. The police are

:07:32. > :07:35.looking for a driver of a red car which looks like a Vauxhall Zafira.

:07:36. > :07:38.It is very important that if people do know something they come forward

:07:39. > :07:42.with a name. That is the most important thing at the best lead we

:07:43. > :07:46.can have. The parents say it is lucky though girls were not

:07:47. > :07:48.seriously hurt and hopefully with time they will be able to put this

:07:49. > :08:18.frightening episode behind them. We're glad you can join us

:08:19. > :08:21.for this sunny midweek evening. Why fish is completely

:08:22. > :08:26.off the menu at a Swindon school. And hitting the heights of luxury

:08:27. > :08:29.camping in the centre of Bristol. The owners of Cotswold Airport have

:08:30. > :08:32.been fined over the death of a fire chief who was killed

:08:33. > :08:35.when a gas cylinder exploded. Gloucester Crown Court heard

:08:36. > :08:40.his death could have been prevented if guidelines had been in place

:08:41. > :08:43.for the safe use of the cylinders. Kemble Air Services Ltd

:08:44. > :08:45.was fined ?75,000. It had previously been found guilty

:08:46. > :08:47.of breaching health A General Medical Council hearing

:08:48. > :08:52.began today into the future of a Bristol doctor who pleaded guilty to

:08:53. > :08:54.taking indecent images of children. Dr Michael Chongkee Lok, from

:08:55. > :08:58.Kingswood, filmed people on a phone He'd worked at the

:08:59. > :09:03.Great Western Hospital in Swindon. Now a panel in Birmingham is

:09:04. > :09:08.deciding if he's fit to practice. People who are living in the West

:09:09. > :09:13.but were born in mainland Europe are being encouraged to vote

:09:14. > :09:15.in the European elections. Poles, Romanians and others

:09:16. > :09:18.from the continent attended a meeting in Yeovil last night

:09:19. > :09:22.aimed at getting more of them Figures show that people born

:09:23. > :09:26.in Europe are even less likely to vote in the upcoming elections than

:09:27. > :09:29.those born in Britain. It's not often you see people

:09:30. > :09:39.in Britain standing in respect But most at this meeting in Yeovil

:09:40. > :09:44.were born on the continent. It's part

:09:45. > :09:58.of a campaign to get more Europeans Many Polish people and many other

:09:59. > :10:02.expat communities fear they have not been taken seriously by now by

:10:03. > :10:06.politicians. What Europeans are seeing to the politicians is that

:10:07. > :10:11.there are votes here, take me seriously.

:10:12. > :10:14.You might think Europeans living in Britain would be keen to vote

:10:15. > :10:18.But in fact, expat Europeans are even less likely

:10:19. > :11:03.Since 2006, I was not unemployed for one day. We love the country and the

:11:04. > :11:10.way you live your lives here. I think Britain gained a lot from

:11:11. > :11:14.immigration. From what I have heard in the media, Eastern European 's

:11:15. > :11:16.bring a lot to the economy. UKIP were on tonight's panel,

:11:17. > :11:32.arguing for complete reform Because of the numbers handy

:11:33. > :11:36.shortages of housing... `` the numbers and shortages.

:11:37. > :11:39.Whatever the voters think, the challenge here is to get more

:11:40. > :11:44.of them to express that at the ballot box.

:11:45. > :11:48.If you're interested in the European elections, we have a big debate on

:11:49. > :12:13.Sunday Politics this weekend. Bristol Rovers' plans to build

:12:14. > :12:16.a new stadium near the University of the West

:12:17. > :12:18.of England have been delayed again. It follows an application made to

:12:19. > :12:21.English Heritage to have the site of their current stadium listed

:12:22. > :12:24.as a war memorial. Rovers, who have already agreed to

:12:25. > :12:27.sell the Memorial Stadium to Sainsbury's to help fund

:12:28. > :12:30.their new home, say they still hope Three Olympic champions

:12:31. > :12:34.from the West have been selected in Great Britain's team

:12:35. > :12:36.for the European Championships later Helen Glover renews her partnership

:12:37. > :12:39.with Polly Swan Peter Reed is named in the men's

:12:40. > :12:48.eight while Alex Gregory forms part It is through the competition of

:12:49. > :12:50.trialling. It is a very tense and stressful time for everybody. We

:12:51. > :12:53.always handle it professionally and people are fighting on the water

:12:54. > :12:54.rather than a changing room. It is always good to be through the worst

:12:55. > :12:55.of it. Great Britain this week at the

:12:56. > :12:58.European Gymnastics Championships. Claudia Fragapane, from Bristol,

:12:59. > :13:00.and Ruby Harrold, who trains in Portishead, have both

:13:01. > :13:17.been selected for the competition From a young age, this woman has set

:13:18. > :13:23.the bar high and now her dream is within reach. A rising star of

:13:24. > :13:28.gymnastics, tomorrow she will make her debut at the European

:13:29. > :13:31.Championships. . I did not take it in at first because I thought, is it

:13:32. > :13:36.really me that has done that? But I work so hard and all the other

:13:37. > :13:43.people have worked so hard to get here as well. It is absolutely

:13:44. > :13:47.amazing. My mum cried. Obviously, she always cries. And my dad. He did

:13:48. > :13:57.not cry that he was really happy for me and my family as well. Key chains

:13:58. > :14:02.`` she trains at the gymnastics club here. Our family said it is

:14:03. > :14:08.something she has opened for for a long time. Claudia is fabulous. She

:14:09. > :14:12.makes my job very easy and it's fantastic to coach. She is bright,

:14:13. > :14:17.fun and we have a great time. If you're having a bad day, she can

:14:18. > :14:21.pick up on that and make you feel better. She is a very special

:14:22. > :14:25.person, really. She might be the youngest member of the squad at just

:14:26. > :14:30.16, but she is still making a baking pressure on. She will be the first

:14:31. > :14:33.British woman to do a double street with a full twist. And Claudia is

:14:34. > :14:38.not the only woman from the West hoping to bring success to British

:14:39. > :14:43.gymnastics this week. She will be joined by another local gymnast, who

:14:44. > :14:50.trained here that the Academy in Portishead. The team begin their

:14:51. > :14:51.campaign to model and are hoping to make it through to this weekend's

:14:52. > :14:58.final. A Bristol student is just weeks away

:14:59. > :15:01.from attempting to become the youngest woman to row unaided

:15:02. > :15:06.across part of the Pacific Ocean. 29`year`old Elsa Hammond will row

:15:07. > :15:11.2,400 miles across the Pacific, She's taking part in the Great

:15:12. > :15:17.Pacific Race, which is the first ever rowing race in the Pacific

:15:18. > :15:31.Ocean, and she joins us now. Tell us about what you have signed

:15:32. > :15:36.up for. I'm going to be out for three months in the middle of the

:15:37. > :15:40.ocean by myself, carrying everything I need with me, completely

:15:41. > :15:44.unsupported. I roll`out of the day in California on the 7th of June,

:15:45. > :15:50.bound for Hawaii and a 24 foot rowing boat. We saw you in training

:15:51. > :15:56.and you were tipped over, won't you? You have got to be prepared for

:15:57. > :15:59.everything. Absolutely. It has been such idea of finding out about that

:16:00. > :16:04.and so many different things to think about and all the different

:16:05. > :16:08.logistical bits of it, and training and preparation. So many things I

:16:09. > :16:14.had not considered. Registered in boats and everything. What is going

:16:15. > :16:19.to be the biggest challenge? We found out about you and it said, she

:16:20. > :16:24.is looking forward to three months of complete isolation, rowing for 16

:16:25. > :16:30.hours a day, facing great white sharks and facing 40 foot waves. I

:16:31. > :16:34.thought, is she really? I am hoping the sharks will stay at a distance!

:16:35. > :16:38.I was hearing the other day about what to do if you find yourself in

:16:39. > :16:44.the water with a great white shark. Hopefully that will not happen. What

:16:45. > :16:48.would you do? Apparently unique to stay vertical and do not kick around

:16:49. > :16:52.too much so you did not look like a winded animal. Do not urinate,

:16:53. > :16:58.because that might make you mix cleared and therefore weak. Time to

:16:59. > :17:02.face it and punch it on the nose. That is the tip of the day. How did

:17:03. > :17:11.you get into all this? The whole thing? Yes. I started drawing on the

:17:12. > :17:16.river at university. I enjoyed it. Whilst I was there, I have about

:17:17. > :17:19.oceangoing about eight years ago. I thought I would really love to do

:17:20. > :17:24.that one day but I was in the middle of my degree and it was not the

:17:25. > :17:28.right time. I put it off because people I thought would think I am

:17:29. > :17:34.weird. Thank you for telling us about it and please be given. And

:17:35. > :18:13.some big celebrity backing as well. She will raise a lot of money for

:18:14. > :18:18.charity. The head teacher sent out letters to all 416 pupils, asking

:18:19. > :18:21.them not to bring any fish products into the school. This extreme action

:18:22. > :18:26.was taking to protect their children was not just allowed to fish but

:18:27. > :18:32.contact with any oil or papers can cause anaphylactic shock. This is a

:18:33. > :18:37.life`threatening issue. If it were anything less, we would not need to

:18:38. > :18:41.be as drastic. But her life is at stake if we do not get things right

:18:42. > :18:44.in this case. We have ten children who are wheelchair users and we have

:18:45. > :18:49.got other children across the school with different needs. We do have

:18:50. > :18:53.children with allergies. These are not as severe as the one that we

:18:54. > :18:58.have taken this step four. Some parents do not feel they have been

:18:59. > :19:10.consulted enough. It is not proper. They never consulted anyone. Our

:19:11. > :19:15.children like fish. The whole school should not be affected for one

:19:16. > :19:19.child, really. Allergies can happen to anybody at any time. It could

:19:20. > :19:24.happen to a child at school at a later date. We should be very

:19:25. > :19:28.positive towards this. The number of allergy sufferers is only increase.

:19:29. > :19:32.So much so that a trial was launched in to test if exposure to minute

:19:33. > :19:39.amounts of peanut protein could gradually cure the allergy. With an

:19:40. > :19:43.84% success rate, it is very promising. It will be years, though,

:19:44. > :19:49.before this treatment is extended to other allergies. In the meantime, a

:19:50. > :19:52.child that the Robert Le Kyng school is having more tests in the hope

:19:53. > :19:53.that this allergy can be controlled without affecting the rest of the

:19:54. > :20:20.school. It's being marketed as a home unlike

:20:21. > :20:23.any other in the Forest of Dean. The renowned ceramic artist Mary Rose

:20:24. > :20:27.Young is selling up. She's famous for her brightly coloured creations

:20:28. > :20:29.and it's a theme that's seeped into every room in the house. Our

:20:30. > :20:34.Gloucestershire reporter, Steve Knibbs, went to take a look round.

:20:35. > :20:38.From the outside, this house looks like any other, but get inside and

:20:39. > :20:41.it's, well, striking. The home of ceramic artist Mary Rose Young has,

:20:42. > :20:42.over the years, become an extension of her own brightly coloured

:20:43. > :20:53.creations. Wearing a pink tie seemed At us like we're inside a mug or a

:20:54. > :20:58.room and then I realised that as I started decorating, it was a canvas

:20:59. > :21:00.to do what I wanted to do. Wearing a pink tie seemed perfect as we

:21:01. > :21:07.strolled through quirky and colourful rooms, but it seems

:21:08. > :21:10.nothing escapes the paintbrush. I made this pedestal sink. I had it in

:21:11. > :21:15.the room door of Harvey Nichols. Got a raw did, to plug it in for me. I

:21:16. > :21:24.will demonstrate the water now. When you switch on the tap, low and

:21:25. > :21:26.behold, stripey water. How about the bathroom where the sink and toilet

:21:27. > :21:34.blended into the walls? You paint is blended into the walls? You paint is

:21:35. > :21:38.on fire them in the kiln to a lower temperature. Then they are therefore

:21:39. > :21:44.good. Just like the Victorians did. That is my spiral staircase. Up on

:21:45. > :21:48.the 10th room, we want one of these, Mary Rose told me she was selling up

:21:49. > :21:53.because she wanted to buy a nearby pub and decorated rooms in her own

:21:54. > :21:56.way to let out. This is like a work of art that I have done and you're

:21:57. > :22:03.only as good as your new piece, aren't you? These letting rooms are

:22:04. > :22:08.such a good idea that I am itching to get going with. With an asking

:22:09. > :22:15.price of just under half ?1 million, who will buy a house like this? I'm

:22:16. > :22:20.hoping it will sell to a fan of Mary Rose. And it is very unique in its

:22:21. > :22:25.own right. It has been created by Mary Rose herself. There is nothing

:22:26. > :22:33.else quite like this. It is truly amazing. Mary Rose's pottery has

:22:34. > :22:37.been bought by Royal Family, foreign presidents and rock stars, but we

:22:38. > :22:46.are unsure if any have put in an offer for the house just yet. It is

:22:47. > :22:54.a bit bland for my taste! The one thing you should not camouflage in a

:22:55. > :22:59.room is the toilet. You might miss! Exactly. We have talked about that a

:23:00. > :23:03.lot on the programme. Now we are talking about interesting places to

:23:04. > :23:09.live, you can spend a night in the sky above Bristol. These four metro

:23:10. > :23:13.caravans have been winched onto a Hotel's rooftop in the city centre.

:23:14. > :23:18.The purpose`built and feature luxury interiors. The owners say Bristol

:23:19. > :23:22.was only the second place in the world to have this accommodation,

:23:23. > :23:29.the other being South Africa. Not good scared of heights. Thank you to

:23:30. > :23:33.Mary Rose. Up to the roof. Ian was just listening to us about the

:23:34. > :23:45.sharks before, Welch? A bit of an expert. `` Welch you? I can assure
