:00:22. > :00:35.was an enormous bank and thd roof shock. `` bang. I saw burning

:00:36. > :00:45.wreckage in the middle of the road. We will be asking if cash m`chines

:00:46. > :00:52.are seen as easy money. The other headlines. A farmer films hhs

:01:07. > :01:11.how not to fluff exams. Anilals helping students relax before their

:01:12. > :01:18.examinations. Good evening. Criminals set off an

:01:19. > :01:24.explosion in the middle of ` petrol station in Bristol, just metres from

:01:25. > :01:28.tanks filled with fuel. The target was a cash machine that was ripped

:01:29. > :01:33.apart. It is thought they fhlled the cash machine with gases and set them

:01:34. > :01:37.alight, apparently not caring about the possible risks. Nearby homes

:01:38. > :01:45.were shaken during the attack, which happened in the middle of the night.

:01:46. > :01:47.Blasted open by what neighbours said sounded like a bomb. This c`sh

:01:48. > :01:50.machine's inner workings were exposed. It's protective front cover

:01:51. > :01:57.blown metres away. Police s`y these thieves left empty`handed. @nd used

:01:58. > :02:02.it seems, a criminal method becoming increasingly common. Take a look at

:02:03. > :02:05.the shadowy area on the right of this picture. There's a cash machine

:02:06. > :02:13.there Filmed by a petrol st`tion's security camera in Hampshird last

:02:14. > :02:17.year. After the machine explodes, men in balaclavas rush in to scoop

:02:18. > :02:21.up the money. There are people living either side of the g`rage and

:02:22. > :02:26.when they looked out of thehr windows, they saw bits of this cash

:02:27. > :02:35.machine on fire, in the middle of the. A distance about 60 fedt. I

:02:36. > :02:38.thought it was a bomb. It w`s not until this morning, when solebody

:02:39. > :02:44.knocked on the door and askdd me about it, I found out it was. I

:02:45. > :02:48.looked out the window to sed burning wreckage in the middle of the road.

:02:49. > :02:55.My instinct was that the garage had gone up in smoke. In March thieves

:02:56. > :03:01.in Manchester made off with ?80 000 after spending months digging this

:03:02. > :03:04.tunnel. And breaking open this machine from underneath. Thdse

:03:05. > :03:10.thieves in Ireland went further still. They tore down a wall of a

:03:11. > :03:15.bank with a digger, taking not just the cash, but the entire cash

:03:16. > :03:18.machine. And here in Bristol just last month, a similar attack, only

:03:19. > :03:21.this time with banknotes cldarly visible on the petrol station floor.

:03:22. > :03:27.Today's attack is now being investigated. These gas bottles

:03:28. > :03:31.it's thought, may have been used to blow the machine apart ` thd force

:03:32. > :03:36.violent enough to tear metal to pieces. But this time too wdak, it

:03:37. > :03:46.seems, to give these thieves what they came here for.

:03:47. > :03:49.A Wiltshire police officer who was found guilty of gross misconduct

:03:50. > :03:53.following a double murder inquiry has resigned from the force.

:03:54. > :03:56.Detective Superintendent Stdve Fulcher was given a final written

:03:57. > :03:59.warning after he failed to read Christopher Halliwell his rhghts

:04:00. > :04:04.before he led him to the body of Becky Godden. As a result, Halliwell

:04:05. > :04:06.was never charged over her death. Wiltshire Police have confirmed Mr

:04:07. > :04:14.Fulcher has resigned, but h`ven t given any more details. A ftneral

:04:15. > :04:17.service has been held in Bath this afternoon, for a businessman who

:04:18. > :04:20.donated millions of pounds of his company's profits to good c`uses.

:04:21. > :04:24.Tributes were paid to 76`ye`r`old Brian Roper at the service `t Bath

:04:25. > :04:27.Abbey. Over the years he gave large amounts of his money to the Royal

:04:28. > :04:31.United Hospital and to local schools. Shortly before his death he

:04:32. > :04:36.was awarded the freedom of the city of Bath in recognition of hhs

:04:37. > :04:40.contribution. An inquest into the deaths of two

:04:41. > :04:43.soldiers in a tent fire has been told their colleague, who w`s in

:04:44. > :04:46.charge of fire safety, had not realised he needed to check the

:04:47. > :04:48.smoke detectors. 23`year`old Dean Hutchinson, from Wiltshire, died

:04:49. > :04:53.along with another soldier when flames engulfed their tent `t Camp

:04:54. > :04:56.Bastion. Giving evidence today, Corporal David Williams said he

:04:57. > :05:00.believed a civilian contractor was responsible for checking thd smoke

:05:01. > :05:20.detectors. The hearing in S`lisbury continues. Defra whether gassing is

:05:21. > :05:27.a way of culling badgers. It comes after a farmer's herd was shot after

:05:28. > :05:32.testing positive for TB. Thd farmer wanted to highlight is the reality

:05:33. > :05:40.of the disease. There are upsetting scenes at the start of the report.

:05:41. > :05:43.Whatever side of the badger cull debate you stand on, David Barton's

:05:44. > :05:53.film is extremely difficult to watch. Four cattle had to bd shot

:05:54. > :06:03.after testing positive for TB, including the farm's oldest stock

:06:04. > :06:07.bull. To have him destroyed is bloody hard and I am getting out of

:06:08. > :06:12.beef because of it because H cannot emotionally carry on doing this You

:06:13. > :06:19.cannot live with this. It is ruining businesses. It is hopeless. My hands

:06:20. > :06:25.are tied. What the bloody hdll do I do? It is ridiculous. I hopd you are

:06:26. > :06:32.getting the message. I asked why he felt the need to make such ` painful

:06:33. > :06:37.video public. Somebody said they had four C Walters. You think it is sad,

:06:38. > :06:41.you forget about it quickly. If you see the cattle being slaughtered, it

:06:42. > :06:46.does not disappear quickly `nd that is the point I wanted to make. For

:06:47. > :06:53.me, it is horrible and it is happening to other farmers to often

:06:54. > :06:56.across the south`west. David has always supported the badger cull

:06:57. > :07:02.with several badger setts on his land. Every species on the farm we

:07:03. > :07:10.control and it is done in a sensible manner. The deer, the foxes, but

:07:11. > :07:13.badgers have been elevated to a status I do not understand `nd they

:07:14. > :07:30.need to be controlled. Therd are far too many. The numbers have dxploded.

:07:31. > :07:34.We have this terrible TB problem. David has now started a blog, in a

:07:35. > :07:38.way he says, it is cathartic, but also to open up the debate to the

:07:39. > :07:41.reality of farming under thd threat of TB.

:07:42. > :07:44.And you can explore both sides of the badger cull debate on otr

:07:45. > :07:52.website. Just go to news and then click on science and environment.

:07:53. > :07:59.Still to come this evening: Join me later to find out more about these

:08:00. > :08:02.guys. In the weather, we saw 21 degrees in the West Country today

:08:03. > :08:16.and I bet we will beat it tomorrow. Details later.

:08:17. > :08:20.So nice to see the sunshine. Swindon has been identified as one of the

:08:21. > :08:23.key contests in the local elections. Experts reckon next Thursdax's

:08:24. > :08:26.result will give an indicathon of who'll win the General Election The

:08:27. > :08:33.council is a close contest between Labour and the Conservatives. Here's

:08:34. > :08:37.our political editor Paul B`rltrop. Navigate away around Swindon's

:08:38. > :08:42.roundabout and it is reckondd the road to Downing Street lies open.

:08:43. > :08:48.Which ever party has got MPs elected here, in the last 30 years, has had

:08:49. > :08:53.their man as prime minister. So this is crucial. Labour turned ott in

:08:54. > :08:55.force today in one of their target seats. Helping deliver leaflets

:08:56. > :09:03.parliamentary candidate Annd Snelgrove, who Labour HQ sax simply

:09:04. > :09:10.must win next year. It puts pressures on everyone to make sure

:09:11. > :09:21.we have a turnout on May thd 22nd and in 2015. Do you get pressure

:09:22. > :09:25.from party headquarters, ? . We are always under pressure. It is a seven

:09:26. > :09:27.day a week job. In the town centre, local Conservatives survey `

:09:28. > :09:30.regeneration project. They believe Swindon's strong economic rdcovery

:09:31. > :09:33.has already helped them keep a grip of the council, In the council

:09:34. > :09:36.chamber, the only other party are four Liberal Democrats. `` keep

:09:37. > :09:38.control of the council. We have had a majority of one in the last few

:09:39. > :09:43.years and survived challengds and on each occasion troubles the lajority.

:09:44. > :09:52.We will work hard to keep the council Conservative. In thd council

:09:53. > :10:02.chamber, the only other party four Liberal Democrats. We are the ones

:10:03. > :10:05.who will hold control in a balanced council and get policies into play

:10:06. > :10:12.and hopefully get more people to vote for us in the first pl`ce. If

:10:13. > :10:17.we had ten councillors elected, we would have a say in which w`y the

:10:18. > :10:23.council would operate. If you have the sway and power, you can make

:10:24. > :10:28.sure you get what people want. UKIP hope to make a breakthrough, but the

:10:29. > :10:34.town's voters are not enthusiastic. I do not hardly vote. A lot of them

:10:35. > :10:40.say things and do not always mean what they say. Those who do vote

:10:41. > :10:46.will be noticed. Swindon's result will be watched this year and next.

:10:47. > :10:53.This time next week we will work through the night to bring xou the

:10:54. > :10:58.local election results. The contest in Swindon will be interesthng. The

:10:59. > :11:02.leaders of the main parties in Swindon will be taking part in a

:11:03. > :11:06.live radio debate next week. That's on BBC Wiltshire, 8.30 on Monday

:11:07. > :11:09.morning, with Mark O'Donnell. A senior judge has raised concerns

:11:10. > :11:13.that addicts are not being given the treatment they need, despitd court

:11:14. > :11:15.orders which say they must be helped with their rehabilitation. @

:11:16. > :11:19.probation officer has been summoned to Bristol Crown Court to explain

:11:20. > :11:22.why, in one case, no treatmdnt had taken place six months after an

:11:23. > :11:30.order was given. Here's Steve Brodie. An Avon and Somerset

:11:31. > :11:34.probation officer was summoned to appear here at Bristol Crown Court

:11:35. > :11:43.to explain why, six months hnto a nine`month rehab order, one addict

:11:44. > :11:47.had received no treatment. Judge Roach said: "It's in the public

:11:48. > :11:51.interest that I find out wh`t's happening. What concerns me that six

:11:52. > :11:54.months on nothing has been done . The officer told the judge that he

:11:55. > :11:58.shared his concerns. He blaled the lack of places on the rising number

:11:59. > :12:01.of alcoholics. The first pohnt of contact for many addicts is the

:12:02. > :12:05.Bristol Drugs Project. They told us that since a change to the service

:12:06. > :12:12.in the autumn, there's been a huge increase in demand. What we have is

:12:13. > :12:19.a very large number of new people coming in. And not enough treatment

:12:20. > :12:23.capacity to be able to see ` free one within a reasonable timd.

:12:24. > :12:26.Bristol alone has almost five thousand heroin and crack users

:12:27. > :12:30.When the new service began hn November, on some days as m`ny as 35

:12:31. > :12:34.addicts a day were being referred. Now referrrals are running `t around

:12:35. > :12:39.a hundred a week, of which `round 40 are alcoholics. Which is sthll too

:12:40. > :12:42.many for the system to cope. The Bristol Drugs Project and three

:12:43. > :12:45.other organisations are hirdd by the Safer Bristol Partnership to provide

:12:46. > :12:54.treatment for both alcoholics and drug users. So what's causing these

:12:55. > :12:59.delays highlighted by the jtdge I would want to reassure the charge

:13:00. > :13:06.the system is not broken. It is a new service that went live hn

:13:07. > :13:11.November. We do fast track `nd prioritise criminal justice cases. I

:13:12. > :13:17.would like to know the detahls of the case. If the person was due to

:13:18. > :13:20.attend. Maggie Telfer says they hope to see someone within three weeks,

:13:21. > :13:24.but she doesn't think that the number of alcoholics has suddenly

:13:25. > :13:30.gone up. Now we have a systdm which has said we really want to provide

:13:31. > :13:35.help to people, whatever thdir problems, that we are uncovdring the

:13:36. > :13:38.that always been out there. Part of the problem has been the success of

:13:39. > :13:45.the new system set up by Safer Bristol. Around half of all

:13:46. > :13:48.referrals have come from GPs, who at last have the opportunity to provide

:13:49. > :13:52.help for their patients. But this demand has now led to a del`y, which

:13:53. > :14:00.is turn is slowing down the chance to break the circle of drug

:14:01. > :14:05.addiction and crime. Steve joins us now. The judge was concerned to

:14:06. > :14:11.summon the probation servicd to give the account. What has the sdrvice

:14:12. > :14:17.said. It is a good question. I was in court. It was a highly unusual

:14:18. > :14:21.discussion. The senior officer being summoned to appear before the

:14:22. > :14:25.judge. The judge asked what was going on and pointed to an `ddict

:14:26. > :14:29.who was sitting in the publhc gallery, saying the man had been

:14:30. > :14:34.coming for the last six months, as required, and that they shotld

:14:35. > :14:39.provide treatment. He said why have you not provided treatment? The

:14:40. > :14:43.probation officer, very unusual to see this discussion between a Crown

:14:44. > :14:47.Court judge and a probation officer, the probation officers said

:14:48. > :14:52.I share your concerns. He b`sically said he was tired of alcoholics

:14:53. > :14:56.being put onto the programmd. The probation officers said we cannot

:14:57. > :15:04.meet your orders. He wanted to know why. Then we have the situation

:15:05. > :15:11.where the officer said, we cannot do anything about it. After thhs

:15:12. > :15:15.exchange, I went to the probation service to ask what is going on and

:15:16. > :15:19.they said they did not want to talk to us. They said talk to thd people

:15:20. > :15:27.who hire the services, safer Bristol, and we have not had an

:15:28. > :15:36.answer. We will have to wait and see what the judge says and accdss. The

:15:37. > :15:39.Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner has reassured the

:15:40. > :15:42.public they can still have faith in the force, following the suspension

:15:43. > :15:44.of Chief Constable Nick Gargan. Mr Gargan was suspended followhng a

:15:45. > :15:47.number of allegations of inappropriate behaviour tow`rds

:15:48. > :15:50.female police officers and staff. Sue Mountstevens, who appointed him

:15:51. > :15:56.last year, said policing in the region would not suffer. Local

:15:57. > :16:01.people will see no difference as far as officers on the street. They will

:16:02. > :16:05.still go out and they will still go to regular meetings, surgerhes,

:16:06. > :16:13.everything. That is business as usual will stop we are now being led

:16:14. > :16:19.by the acting Chief Constable who is a previous deputy. He has bden an

:16:20. > :16:23.officer for 30 years. He has been in Avon and Somerset for 11 ye`rs and

:16:24. > :16:30.knows the area well and I hope that reassures officers and local people.

:16:31. > :16:34.The Welsh snooker player Stdphen Lee lost his appeal against a 12 year

:16:35. > :16:40.ban for match fixing. The former world number five was found guilty

:16:41. > :16:46.of seven charges after a trhbunal in 2013. He had also appealed `gainst

:16:47. > :16:53.having to pay ?40,000 costs, which have been increased to ?75,000. Taxi

:16:54. > :16:57.drivers in South Somerset could soon have to pass a test on their

:16:58. > :17:00.knowledge of the area beford they're allowed on the road. The local

:17:01. > :17:03.council say they also want to make sure drivers have a grasp of basic

:17:04. > :17:12.literacy and numeracy. Clinton Rogers has been testing reaction to

:17:13. > :17:21.the idea. Can you tell me where this road is?

:17:22. > :17:28.Pass. Campbell Grove? Merlin Road? No. You might need to do better than

:17:29. > :17:34.that from now on if you want to drive a taxi in Yeovil. The local

:17:35. > :17:38.council votes tonight on introducing a knowledge test for anyone wanting

:17:39. > :17:50.a taxi licence in future Thhs taxi boss runs 80 cars in Yeovil. 80 of

:17:51. > :17:53.his drivers are Eastern European, but he says they've already sat a

:17:54. > :18:04.Yeovil knowledge test, before they even came to this country. With

:18:05. > :18:07.European drivers and English guys, we have had to do some form of

:18:08. > :18:13.written test, knowledge test before we let them loose. This man comes

:18:14. > :18:17.from Romania, but he's been driving a taxi in Yeovil for six ye`rs. He

:18:18. > :18:22.took his local knowledge test in Prague. The local council s`y their

:18:23. > :18:30.test, which other councils have will also include basic litdracy and

:18:31. > :18:37.numeracy. Can you work out xour taxi fare? That seems not unreasonable.

:18:38. > :18:43.Do you have a sound grasp of the English`language? Bag is important

:18:44. > :18:48.if you come Aberdeen or Latvia. `` that is important. From now on, if

:18:49. > :18:52.you are a taxi driver, knowledge is everything. But you might wonder why

:18:53. > :18:54.the knowledge has to be herd, when most of us have these things. Where

:18:55. > :19:10.was it you wanted to go? Gloucs and Somerset will pl`y each

:19:11. > :19:13.other for the first time thhs season when the cricket Twenty20

:19:14. > :19:18.competition gets under way tomorrow. Gloucestershire expect

:19:19. > :19:21.over 6000 spectators at the County ground in Bristol. The newsstand is

:19:22. > :19:26.finished and will be open for the first time. You always worrx

:19:27. > :19:30.starting in the middle of the main, but the Bristol heatwave, it should

:19:31. > :19:37.be 90 degrees tomorrow night. Somerset, always a cracking match. A

:19:38. > :19:41.competitive derby. We are excited about everything we have lined up.

:19:42. > :19:48.It will be a good game and ` good night out. The game starts `t 5 30pm

:19:49. > :19:55.and there is commentary on BBC local radio and BBC sport online. Now you

:19:56. > :19:58.know when the weather gets good it must be exam time. Across the West

:19:59. > :20:01.thousands of students and school pupils are revising hard and giving

:20:02. > :20:05.their parents sleepless nights, no doubt. It's an anxious time but made

:20:06. > :20:08.a little easier for students at Bath Spa University. They are behng

:20:09. > :20:12.offered free head and neck lassages and a petting zoo to reduce their

:20:13. > :20:17.stress levels as Lizzie Way reports. Feeding the ducks. Stroking a goat.

:20:18. > :20:20.And being nuzzled by a horsd. These students are having a littld animal

:20:21. > :20:30.therapy to take their mind of their looming exams. We wanted to do fun

:20:31. > :20:41.things like the petting farl and free moustaches so that's they get

:20:42. > :20:44.out of the library `` massages. And health MOTs to make sure thdy are in

:20:45. > :20:48.tiptop condition. Today was about having fun but stress is actually a

:20:49. > :20:57.serious condition that can really hamper success. Anxiety and stress,

:20:58. > :21:01.fear about the future, some people say depression is a preoccupation of

:21:02. > :21:06.the past. Animals bring you back to the here and now and help

:21:07. > :21:10.communicate. You can hear pdople talking and chatting about `nimals

:21:11. > :21:16.and appreciating the present, and stress can be an over emphasis about

:21:17. > :21:20.worrying about the future. Xou have to be relaxed and gentle whdn you

:21:21. > :21:23.hold the animals so it sends the right signals to your brain, at this

:21:24. > :21:27.time of year, to calm down `nd relax. Even the entrance was full of

:21:28. > :21:37.post it notes reminding you of ways to combat stress. So as the animals

:21:38. > :21:40.basked in the sun the students enjoyed a break, but with the

:21:41. > :21:43.library opposite the books weren't far away. Leaving these guys

:21:44. > :21:55.wondering what all the fuss was about. There are now only 28 days to

:21:56. > :21:58.go until the FIFA World Cup begins. And the BBC coverage is being

:21:59. > :22:01.supported by these characters from Bristol's Aardman Animations. The

:22:02. > :22:05.four football figurines are going to hitch a ride to the tournamdnt with

:22:06. > :22:15.us. Tracey Miller went to mdet their maker. Let's go. To Brazil? Why

:22:16. > :22:20.not? We will find our way. Ht is a once`in`a`lifetime chance. Love it
