:00:12. > :00:15.The results of the local eldctions have delivered plenty of surprises.
:00:16. > :00:19.The votes were counted overnight and today. In places, the two coalition
:00:20. > :00:22.parties bucked the national trend by winning seats. But elsewherd the
:00:23. > :00:31.Liberal Democrats lost out `nd smaller parties made gains. Here's
:00:32. > :00:35.our political editor Paul B`rltrop. When you've been in governmdnt four
:00:36. > :00:38.years you don't expect this. In Swindon the Conservatives increased
:00:39. > :00:43.their small majority, boosthng the survival chances of the town's two
:00:44. > :00:51.Tory MPs. UKIP won lots of votes, though no seats. Inverleith both.
:00:52. > :00:55.I've been coming here 14 ye`rs and this is the best night we'vd had.
:00:56. > :01:05.We've racked up record wins and gained seat from Labour. We won by
:01:06. > :01:08.over 300 votes. UKIP won lots of votes so no seats. Labour wdre
:01:09. > :01:15.stunned to go backwards. It was generally a plague on all
:01:16. > :01:20.your houses. We had policies on green waste and they went down well
:01:21. > :01:26.with voters but the mood of the nation is one of dissatisfaction
:01:27. > :01:30.with politics. For the other coalition party, Cheltenham was the
:01:31. > :01:35.saving grace. The Liberal Ddmocrats strengthened their grip on the
:01:36. > :01:40.Council. What happened here illustrates how
:01:41. > :01:47.complex the local elections were. No doubt who the losers were. @s for
:01:48. > :01:51.the winners, labour, the Grdens and the Conservatives all meet games
:01:52. > :01:53.while the UKIP is picked up their first seat. Bristol saw the West's
:01:54. > :02:00.biggest changes and bitterest exchanges. The city's polithcs is
:02:01. > :02:07.now more polarised. I'm proud to be representing the
:02:08. > :02:11.ward that so overwhelmingly rejected the politics of race is man Tom
:02:12. > :02:16.phobia and embraced instead a candidate who gave a dam about them.
:02:17. > :02:25.We are taking seats all across the country this evening and we've put
:02:26. > :02:29.up with a lot of bad press... We didn't actually tell a lot of lies
:02:30. > :02:35.and produce leaflets but thdre we go. UKIP is here to stay.
:02:36. > :02:42.Celebrating over tea and cakes this afternoon, Bristol's Greens. They
:02:43. > :02:46.got more votes and seats th`n ever. People are voting Green bec`use they
:02:47. > :02:51.look at our policies and sed we ve got good ideas about how politics
:02:52. > :02:58.should go. We want to changd politics and talk about the real
:02:59. > :03:00.long`term issues. We need to look at our economy and manage its
:03:01. > :03:03.differently for the future. No councils changed hands.
:03:04. > :03:07.In Gloucester the Tories held their own, while in Stroud Labour advanced
:03:08. > :03:12.a little. All parties are now trying to work out what it means for next
:03:13. > :03:15.year's general election. There's more anlysis on the BBC s
:03:16. > :03:26.Website and we'll have more of course on the Sunday Politics at
:03:27. > :03:29.11.00am. Authorities both sides of the
:03:30. > :03:32.Atlantic say they will stop searching for the four yachtsmen
:03:33. > :03:43.missing in the Atlantic this weekend. A US helicopter fotnd the

:03:51. > :03:53.There is still no sign of the men. The Foreign Office says the US Coast
:03:54. > :03:59.Guard intends to call off its search tomorrow morning.
:04:00. > :04:06.Swindon's troubled car factory lost another 450 workers today. Honda is
:04:07. > :04:10.struggling to sell its cars in Europe and has made big cuts. One
:04:11. > :04:13.production line has been mothballed and the total workforce has fallen
:04:14. > :04:16.from 5,000 before the recession to just 3,000 today. To help pdople
:04:17. > :04:19.find new work, a special jobs fair was held this morning, and our
:04:20. > :04:22.business correspondent Dave Harvey went along.
:04:23. > :04:25.This is a jobs fair with a difference. You have to havd been
:04:26. > :04:29.laid off by Honda to qualifx this morning and look at the crowds here.
:04:30. > :04:32.456 people do qualify. That's how many people have left the Swindon
:04:33. > :04:36.car plant today. There are 07 companies here recruiting. The Army
:04:37. > :04:38.is recruiting engineers. Evdn Honda is recruiting for one of its own
:04:39. > :04:42.subsidiary firms. People who work for Honda are always
:04:43. > :04:44.seen as a premium and that hs because Honda have exceptionally
:04:45. > :04:45.high standards in terms of employability, work ethic,
:04:46. > :04:48.punctuality. Plenty of positivity here btt there
:04:49. > :04:52.were fewer volunteers this time around, in fact some 100 people have
:04:53. > :05:04.left jobs at Honda against their wishes. The unions tell me that
:05:05. > :05:07.number could have been reduced. More people could have been kept on but
:05:08. > :05:09.Honda decided instead to go with contractors rather than its own
:05:10. > :05:12.staff. Honda are keeping those contract
:05:13. > :05:15.workers primarily because they pay them ?4 an hour less than Honda
:05:16. > :05:19.workers and consequently, wd have seen almost 100 Honda workers being
:05:20. > :05:23.forced out of their job and contract workers staying in jobs that
:05:24. > :05:26.previously Honda workers were doing. The company wouldn't talk today
:05:27. > :05:37.insisting in a written statdment they must remain flexible. They are
:05:38. > :05:41.doing all they can to safegtard jobs at the plant. But while production
:05:42. > :05:45.slows down here, other car firms are going flat out.
:05:46. > :05:49.It is very popular. Hyundais, all their factories are at maxilum
:05:50. > :05:53.output so we can't get hold of some of the cars. Honda was alwaxs in the
:05:54. > :05:57.middle of the range and BMW and Audi have bought some of their products
:05:58. > :06:01.down, and price realigned which is nipping at the top end of Honda and
:06:02. > :06:04.the likes of Hyundai and Suzuki are nipping away at the bottom dnd so
:06:05. > :06:07.their main products are getting squeezed in the middle.
:06:08. > :06:10.Will this be the last jobs fair for workers leaving Honda? That depends
:06:11. > :06:20.on the designers and marketders in Japan, not the Swindonians who make
:06:21. > :06:24.the cars. ? The new Southmead Hospital in
:06:25. > :06:28.Bristol has been forced to postpone 180 operations because some of the
:06:29. > :06:31.operating theatres aren't rdady Services have been transferred from
:06:32. > :06:40.Frenchay but there's a problem with the airflow in some areas of the new
:06:41. > :06:46.site. Rugby and Bath have mist out on the
:06:47. > :06:49.European challenge cup losing to Northampton tonight. They ldt the
:06:50. > :06:57.game at half`time but mistakes in the second half cost them ddarly.
:06:58. > :07:04.Tickets for the final were like gold dust, just 1000 made available to
:07:05. > :07:08.Bath despite the stadium holding 12,000 times that.
:07:09. > :07:12.A bit of a shame. Very important for the club. Got to win somethhng this
:07:13. > :07:17.season. It's amazing to be here. Very
:07:18. > :07:25.excited and very nervous. It promised to be a thriller,
:07:26. > :07:30.Bath's last chance of a trophy. After two penalties apiece, the
:07:31. > :07:37.breakthrough moment. A breakaway try by Bath's Anthony Watson and when he
:07:38. > :07:41.gets clear, no one catches him. The lead should have been greatdr but
:07:42. > :07:49.they usually deadly George Ford mist not once, but three times. Gasps of
:07:50. > :07:52.disbelief. No such charity from Northampton. Stephen Myler kicked
:07:53. > :07:58.them and friends but when the Saints rumbled over for a try, Bath's
:07:59. > :08:02.chance had gone. After misshng out on the premiership play`offs on the
:08:03. > :08:13.last day, this defeat will hurt despite a fine season, they have no
:08:14. > :08:21.trophy to show for it. That's it from us. We are b`ck
:08:22. > :08:27.throughout the weekend. Good evening. A lot of showers around
:08:28. > :08:31.through Saturday. Simmer will be showery. There will be gradtally an
:08:32. > :08:38.improvement through Sunday with less showers and by Mendes, many of our
:08:39. > :08:43.districts are seeing dry we`ther with an isolated shower. Tonight 's
:08:44. > :08:46.temperatures getting down to eight ` 10 Celsius with showers frol the
:08:47. > :08:49.East as we have through the night and by tomorrow morning, sole of
:08:50. > :08:57.those will be in abundance towards the east. That will set the tone
:08:58. > :09:02.frequent showers and some dry frequent showers and some dry
:09:03. > :09:05.interludes but generally a lot of cloud. Difficult to pin down where
:09:06. > :09:10.the showers will be and the timing of those that may be fading away
:09:11. > :09:17.through the evening. Temper`tures tomorrow will struggle under those

:09:31. > :09:43.National forecast. The bank holiday weekend weather is
:09:44. > :09:48.not looking user-friendly although most places should get one decent
:09:49. > :09:58.day out of the three and some places will get two. We have low pressure,
:09:59. > :10:02.and there will be showers around over the next couple of days
:10:03. > :10:09.particularly. Sunshine breaking through now and again. It will pick
:10:10. > :10:16.up temperatures. Tonight we have rain. We have had thunderstorms in
:10:17. > :10:23.northern England. They are moving into Northern Ireland. A lot of dry
:10:24. > :10:32.weather will stop misty in the north-east. On Saturday, there is a
