:00:00. > :00:14.Good evening. The Liberal Ddmocrats look at the papers on the news

:00:15. > :00:17.Good evening. The Liberal Ddmocrats say they're now focussing on the

:00:18. > :00:21.general election after a disastrous night in the European electhons

:00:22. > :00:26.across the West. They were pushed into fifth place and lost their only

:00:27. > :00:29.Euro MP, Sir Graham Watson. The Conservatives also lost a sdat,

:00:30. > :00:35.while Labour and the Greens had cause to celebrate.

:00:36. > :00:38.For 20 years, Liberal Democrat Graham Watson has been going to

:00:39. > :00:48.Brussels on behalf of the South West. Not any more. Liberal

:00:49. > :00:54.Democrats, 160,376. That was fifth place. A bitter blow for thd party

:00:55. > :00:58.in their symbolic heartland. I believe that the loss of thd seat

:00:59. > :01:01.for the Lib Dems and Conservatives reflects the fact we have bden in

:01:02. > :01:10.government through a diffictlt and long recession trying to get the

:01:11. > :01:15.economy right. I have no dotbt we will be back. It was a bittdr,

:01:16. > :01:18.bitter, bitter night for us. To lose somebody of the quality and calibre

:01:19. > :01:21.of Graham Watson, who has bden an outstanding servant to our region,

:01:22. > :01:25.and for Liberal democracy, hs a bitter blow indeed. The coalition

:01:26. > :01:31.partners also lost ground, slipping from three MEPs to two, but their

:01:32. > :01:34.share of the vote did hold tp. The smiles were broadest on UKIP faces,

:01:35. > :01:41.who topped the poll in many areas across the region. Five years ago we

:01:42. > :01:46.got about four first places and this time we got at least 24`30. That

:01:47. > :01:53.gives us a marvellous platform to go forward. Labour made a return to

:01:54. > :01:59.Brussels, taking back the sdat they'd lost in 2009. We need to make

:02:00. > :02:03.sure the European Union works for the people of the south west, and

:02:04. > :02:07.that is what I regard as my primary task as an MEP for the region. To

:02:08. > :02:16.bring jobs and investment into the region over the coming five years.

:02:17. > :02:19.And the Greens also had cause to raise a glass, picking up their

:02:20. > :02:22.first ever seat in the South West. This afternoon, the party ldader

:02:23. > :02:28.swept into Stroud to congratulate their newest MEP. Here in the South

:02:29. > :02:31.West I think there was a re`l mood for change and a preparedness to

:02:32. > :02:34.look round for different kinds of answers. We are offering re`l

:02:35. > :02:40.political change, different ways of doing things and politics. The South

:02:41. > :02:44.West was a little bit more open and prepared to consider that. @s they

:02:45. > :02:50.sift through the finer detahls, all the major parties will be able to

:02:51. > :02:57.draw some positives. All except the Lib Dems, that is.

:02:58. > :02:59.A 28`year`old man has appeared at Taunton Deane Magistrates' Court

:03:00. > :03:03.charged with the abduction of a child from Somerset. Davinddr Singh,

:03:04. > :03:08.of Churchdown in Gloucestershire, was arrested in Swindon on Saturday

:03:09. > :03:13.night. He's been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Taunton

:03:14. > :03:16.Crown Court on the 9th of Jtne. Investigations are continuing into a

:03:17. > :03:20.fatal car crash on one of Swindon's busiest roads. Paul Winters, 33

:03:21. > :03:26.died after the collision yesterday morning on Thamesdown Drive. Another

:03:27. > :03:30.man, believed to be his father, is in hospital with serious injuries.

:03:31. > :03:34.Two men were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerots

:03:35. > :03:38.driving. One has been bailed and the other released without charge.

:03:39. > :03:42.A man in Bristol's been left with serious injuries after being

:03:43. > :03:45.assaulted in the city centrd. It happened near the war memorhal on

:03:46. > :03:49.Colston Avenue at about half past four this morning. Police s`y

:03:50. > :03:54.they're keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident

:03:55. > :03:58.What possesses a person to throw themselves down a steep hill after a

:03:59. > :04:00.bouncing cheese is anyone's guess but once again today thousands

:04:01. > :04:05.turned out in Gloucestershire for the annual cheese rolling. Real

:04:06. > :04:08.cheese was back on the Coopdr's Hill menu after it was banned last year

:04:09. > :04:11.for health and safety reasons. One person suffered a suspected broken

:04:12. > :04:19.leg but no other serious injuries were reported.

:04:20. > :04:28.They came from all over the West and all over the world, all for this. To

:04:29. > :04:32.watch a cheese get thrown down a very steep hill, chased by ` bunch

:04:33. > :04:42.of fearless, some would say reckless, runners. So what's it like

:04:43. > :04:46.taking part? Take a look at this. Coming down, you are, like, in a

:04:47. > :04:51.50`man washing machine. You have a plan to go down and you just end up

:04:52. > :04:54.rolling. I think, if you look at the floor now, it's quite flat, but up

:04:55. > :04:58.there, the floor is that co`rse that you're thinking, I can put ly feet

:04:59. > :05:03.down. I can put my feet down. And you end up just sliding on xour bum.

:05:04. > :05:07.It's the best way to do it, I think. Would you do it again? Yes.

:05:08. > :05:10.Definitely. We did say it w`s our last but... On a day like today

:05:11. > :05:14.where you've had some rain, the ground's quite soft, it's good. It's

:05:15. > :05:18.all right. You can land and sort of like bounce and everything. It's

:05:19. > :05:21.when you've had a lot of sun on the ground and it's totally dry, that's

:05:22. > :05:24.when it's really dangerous. But in conditions like that, it's great.

:05:25. > :05:28.But it's still a pretty crazy thing to do, isn't it? Oh, yeah, ht's a

:05:29. > :05:31.crazy thing to do, but that's Gloucester! We're crazy people! Mad

:05:32. > :05:35.dogs and Englishmen! Nobody else would do it. Last year, loc`l cheese

:05:36. > :05:38.makers were warned not to stpply the race for health and safety reasons

:05:39. > :05:41.so a plastic substitute was used instead. But this year, thanks in

:05:42. > :05:44.part to some Dutch Gouda, the real deal was back on. So another year

:05:45. > :05:52.celebrating a great British tradition, one that looks sdt to

:05:53. > :05:55.continue for generations to come. A team from North Somerset has

:05:56. > :05:58.finished the first of seven marathons it aims to complete in

:05:59. > :06:02.seven days for seven local charities. Jason Smith from

:06:03. > :06:08.Weston`super`Mare, and five of his friends, set off from the Grand Pier

:06:09. > :06:12.this morning. They headed up through Somerset and crossed Bristol mid

:06:13. > :06:16.afternoon. The team's been training for nine months, shedding three

:06:17. > :06:26.stone along the way. All thd runs will be local and all the money

:06:27. > :06:28.raised go to local charities. We're back tomorrow but now let s

:06:29. > :06:36.get the weather. Something of mixed fortunes through

:06:37. > :06:39.the course of tomorrow. There will be some showers around, gendrally

:06:40. > :06:42.fairly light, but occasionally you may catch some heavy ones. The

:06:43. > :06:48.brightest weather generally speaking will be towards the south`wdst.

:06:49. > :06:51.Always a fair amount of clotd. Through the course of tonight, as

:06:52. > :06:54.well as showery rain, temperatures between about eight and ten Celsius

:06:55. > :06:58.which sets us up into tomorrow morning with quite a lot of cloud

:06:59. > :07:03.around. Some showery outbre`ks of rain coming and going. Some brighter

:07:04. > :07:07.spells between those. The bdst of those should come down towards the

:07:08. > :07:10.south`west. So that continuds through the rest of the day with

:07:11. > :07:14.showers beginning to fade as we head into the evening. Temperatures

:07:15. > :07:23.should be safely up in the lid teens, 14 or 15. A few spots getting

:07:24. > :07:25.higher than that. A similar picture through the rest of this wedk.

:07:26. > :07:29.Unsettled, showers about, btt brighter spells as well. More of

:07:30. > :07:31.those as we get towards next weekend. Stay with us for the

:07:32. > :07:43.national The month of May is often thought of

:07:44. > :07:47.as the transition from Spring into summer. It can have a variety of

:07:48. > :07:51.weather. We've seen just that in just one day. In fact, we had a

:07:52. > :07:55.window of sunshine, it was quite pleasant, but at the same time we

:07:56. > :07:58.had this speed of cloud and rain moving up from the channel to the

:07:59. > :08:02.North of England and sharp showers to the north and west. If you

:08:03. > :08:11.managed to dodge them and keep the sunshine, you have the warmth. Highs

:08:12. > :08:13.of 18 degrees. Underneath the cloud and rain, a disappointing 11

:08:14. > :08:16.degrees. Very cool for this time of year. We will continue to see the

:08:17. > :08:20.showers fading to the west, but temperatures are pretty uniform

:08:21. > :08:24.through the night. We pick up more persistent rain spilling in off the

:08:25. > :08:28.North Sea. This could cause one or two problems through tomorrow and

:08:29. > :08:32.into Wednesday. There's a level of uncertainty as to where that will be

:08:33. > :08:35.sitting, potentially across North Norfolk, East Midlands and eastern

:08:36. > :08:40.England. Weather warnings have been issued due to the intensity of the

:08:41. > :08:44.rainfall. A lot of surface water and spray and maybe the potential for

:08:45. > :08:46.some localised flooding. A cool north-easterly breeze as well, so a

:08:47. > :08:47.rather
