:00:31. > :00:33.couple cared for nine children, all of them the mother's,

:00:34. > :00:40.but her husband had only fathered the three youngest ones.

:00:41. > :00:43.matresses were soiled, bedrooms smelt of urine and animal f`eces.

:00:44. > :00:46.The children were reported `s being often dirty and smelly and suffered

:00:47. > :00:48.badly with head lice infest`tions, which the mother told policd she'd

:00:49. > :00:50.treated with mayonnaise. Despite health

:00:51. > :00:52.and social agencies attempthng to intervene, it was only after

:00:53. > :00:55.the youngest child was admitted to hospital with severe nappy rash

:00:56. > :01:13.which had left ulcers on thd skin, that police arrested the cotple

:01:14. > :01:16.We can't identify them as wd have a legal duty to protect the children's

:01:17. > :01:21.identity but at a previous hearing, I asked the father why he'd treated

:01:22. > :01:24.his children so badly. We did let our children down.

:01:25. > :01:27.We never stopped loving our children but we did let them down,

:01:28. > :01:30.not in an neglectful way but in a way of development and growhng up.

:01:31. > :01:33.Did you believe at the time when your children with you that

:01:34. > :01:39.they were being treated properly and being brought up in a clean

:01:40. > :01:43.and loving home? I did, yes but I suppose yot could

:01:44. > :01:48.say that was blinkered opinhon, so I did, yeah, but looking back,

:01:49. > :01:53.now I can see, no. Yesterday the couple were hdre

:01:54. > :01:56.and expected to be jailed but legal argument delayed that

:01:57. > :01:59.until his morning. They never arrived

:02:00. > :02:03.and the court was told they'd taken an overdose and were in hospital.

:02:04. > :02:06.The judge said, "I have no hdea whether this is attention`sdeking,

:02:07. > :02:11.sympathy`seeking or whether this was a genuine attempt to take

:02:12. > :02:15.their lives but I have to work on the basis that this was a gdnuine

:02:16. > :02:18.attempt to take their lives." A psychiatric team are now working

:02:19. > :02:27.with the couple to ensure no harm comes to them between now and

:02:28. > :02:30.a new sentencing date next week More than 40 officers and staff have

:02:31. > :02:34.been interviewed as part of the investigation into allegations
