:00:35. > :00:39.Dirt`ridden carpets, soiled mattresses,
:00:40. > :00:42.rubbish and clothes everywhdre ` the bedrooms smelt of urine
:00:43. > :00:48.and animal faeces ` one of them even had ivy growing through the window.
:00:49. > :00:51.The children suffered from a poor diet and terrible hygiene.
:00:52. > :00:54.Those at school were ostrachsed ` one smelt so bad,
:00:55. > :00:59.The children were often infdsted with head lice, which their mother
:01:00. > :01:08.The law prevents us from iddntifying them to protect the children.
:01:09. > :01:11.But I spoke to their father before he was sent to prison.
:01:12. > :01:18.We did not stop loving than but we did let them down.
:01:19. > :01:21.In a way of development and growing up.
:01:22. > :01:24.How did you let your children get into this state?
:01:25. > :01:35.It is a range of failings on my behalf, my wife's behalf and social
:01:36. > :01:45.Social care and health teams tried, unsuccessfully it turns out, to help
:01:46. > :02:13.The investigation started after the couple's two year old
:02:14. > :02:16.daughter was admitted to hospital with severe nappy rash ` thd pain
:02:17. > :02:22.The detective in charge of the case told me it's been the most
:02:23. > :02:27.Neglect is around failing to meet the basic needs of the child so that
:02:28. > :02:32.they can develop and meet those milestones that normal children do.
:02:33. > :02:35.And these children were not reaching those normal milestones
:02:36. > :02:37.that most children do meet, such as being
:02:38. > :02:44.able to walk or use the toilets.
:02:45. > :02:50.The judge said that the parents were inadequate, stupid,
:02:51. > :02:53.stubborn and incompetent but that they were not wickdd.
:02:54. > :02:55.They did not deliberately inflict pain on their children
:02:56. > :03:04.and they tried their limited best to bring up their children correctly.
:03:05. > :03:06.A Somerset MP is under investigation by the parlialentary
:03:07. > :03:12.The Standards Commissioner will consider whether the Wells LP Tessa
:03:13. > :03:16.Munt should have declared a poll carried out in her constitudncy on

:03:54. > :03:56.28 year old Louise Pollard had said she wanted to become
:03:57. > :03:58.the most prolific surrogate mums in the country.
:03:59. > :04:00.Today she certainly became one of the most notorious.
:04:01. > :04:05.The court heard that Pollard who has two children
:04:06. > :04:08.of her own says she had previously been a genuine surrogate mother
:04:09. > :04:13.At the beginning of 2012, she had been contacted by a couple online `
:04:14. > :04:19.She had agreed to carry a b`by for them and they had agreed to pay
:04:20. > :04:27.The court heard she went on to artificially inseminated
:04:28. > :04:29.herself and on two occasions pretended to have fallen prdgnant `
:04:30. > :04:32.even faking a video of her carrying out a pregnancy test.
:04:33. > :04:47.But on both occasions she l`ter said she had miscarried after taking more
:04:48. > :04:50.In 2013, another couple, Debra and Winston Kaba,
:04:51. > :04:54.They too agreed to pay her to carry a child for them and again,
:04:55. > :04:56.the court heard, she pretended to fall pregn`nt, this
:04:57. > :05:00.But again, soon after, she said she'd miscarried ` having t`ken more
:05:01. > :05:04.The court heard the whole episode was extremely traumatic for both
:05:05. > :05:08.One woman said she had been left feeling she would
:05:09. > :05:14.Another victim said he and his wife's world came crashing down when
:05:15. > :05:29.Pollard who had previously hit the headlines in 2010 when she
:05:30. > :05:31.agreed to be a surrogate for the Bin Laden family pldaded
:05:32. > :05:35.Today, police appealed for any other couples involved with
:05:36. > :05:41.Pollard told us about other couples she has been
:05:42. > :05:44.involved with and we don't have the details so if anyone has been
:05:45. > :05:50.directly affected by her activities, please contact your local force
:05:51. > :05:55.Sentencing her to three years, the judge told her this wasn't just
:05:56. > :05:59.a case of financial loss but a case of two desperate couples behng taken
