:01:09. > :01:13.Averies Recycling in Marshg`te have been told to keep their doors
:01:14. > :01:17.and windows closed on one It's been going
:01:18. > :01:23.since yesterday evening and smoke is still rising from
:01:24. > :01:26.the site, where tonnes of w`ste and recycling material are smouldering
:01:27. > :01:28.in the stifling temperatures. Our Wiltshire reporter, Will
:01:29. > :01:43.Glennon, is there for us now. End Mac Smoke is still a major
:01:44. > :01:51.problem as it drifts across Swindon tonight. As you can see behhnd me,
:01:52. > :01:55.and it has been like this all day and night. Who knows what is in the
:01:56. > :02:00.smoke. It is a product of the waste that is coming off there and it does
:02:01. > :02:03.not smell very pleasant at `ll. It smells like burning rubbish and it
:02:04. > :02:07.catches in your throat. The wind direction is taking it away from us
:02:08. > :03:49.and environmental tests fire and burn all weekend. They have
:03:50. > :03:54.been becoming more frequent, not just in Wiltshire. They are
:03:55. > :03:58.happening nationally. It is an area we are monitoring and trying to look
:03:59. > :04:01.to see what the causes are. Also, we are recycling an awful lot of
:04:02. > :04:05.material now so it is a matter of how we are going to deal with that
:04:06. > :04:11.in the future. Around 25 firefighters will stay here through
:04:12. > :04:15.the West of today and tonight. They will make sure it does not spread.
:04:16. > :04:20.Nearby businesses will conthnue to watch nervously as the fire looks
:04:21. > :04:24.set to burn for some days ydt. I was speaking to one of the business
:04:25. > :04:27.owners here last night as the fire burnt, a lady that runs the tyre
:04:28. > :04:34.fitting business just there, right next to the recycling plant. I asked
:04:35. > :04:39.her what was between the fire and her stock of 3000 tyres, and she
:04:40. > :04:44.said, quite simply, the firefighters. That kind of praise
:04:45. > :04:47.has been echoed around here for the containment work the firefighters
:04:48. > :04:52.have been doing. What we do not know is how much longer this is going to
:04:53. > :04:56.burn for. There is a lot of fuel in there, and heat. The fire sdrvice
:04:57. > :05:00.said they have to work out whether to let it burn out, or get hn there
:05:01. > :05:05.and extinguish it. It looks really unpleasant. As we
:05:06. > :05:09.have been hearing, we have covered a few stories like this reason it so
:05:10. > :05:33.earlier I spoke to... I asked him if we're seeing more
:05:34. > :05:39.and more of this type of bl`ze. There's been a number
:05:40. > :05:42.of fires hitting the headlines We've had significant fires with
:05:43. > :05:45.significant disruption to local communities, local residents
:05:46. > :05:47.and a number of sites where we have been back many times, and the fire
:05:48. > :05:50.down there in Wiltshire is `nother example of the testing nature
:05:51. > :05:53.of these incidents for the Fire But as you say,
:05:54. > :05:56.we have people in Wiltshire on a boiling hot day told to stay
:05:57. > :06:00.inside with their windows and doors closed, it pretty miserable,
:06:01. > :06:03.and there seems seems to be no way It is a very nasty environmdnt, both
:06:04. > :06:07.for the firefighting crews, the responders, and of course the local
:06:08. > :06:09.community affected by this fire We are doing our best to brhng
:06:10. > :06:12.the incident under control. It is monitored and soon
:06:13. > :06:15.as we can get better news to local But shouldn't you
:06:16. > :06:18.in the fire service be sitthng down with the waste industrx
:06:19. > :06:21.and saying, there are too m`ny How can we stop them starting
:06:22. > :06:25.in the first place? We are working with other
:06:26. > :06:28.regulators, notably the Envhronment Agency, but most importantlx the
:06:29. > :06:31.waste sector itself to learn the lessons from these incidents, to
:06:32. > :06:33.deliver better regulation, better safety and a better environlent for
:06:34. > :06:36.local people where these sites are managed more stringently so that
:06:37. > :06:39.these fires are avoided in future. But it doesn't seem to be working,
:06:40. > :06:41.because the number We recognise that and that hs
:06:42. > :06:45.exactly the reason for the new code of practice with more stringent
:06:46. > :06:48.requirements for how the waste is stored, so we are taking thd
:06:49. > :06:51.situation very seriously and these new stringent rules within
:06:52. > :06:53.the code of practice will ensure, we hope, that we see a genuhne
:06:54. > :06:56.decrease in fires in coming years. There's anger in Swindon ovdr
