:00:18. > :00:21.strong criticism today, for spending nearly three quarters of a lillion

:00:22. > :00:24.pounds ` on three temporary members of staff. They work as managers in

:00:25. > :00:27.the children's services dep`rtment, and were brought in just before the

:00:28. > :00:29.council was given an "inadepuate" rating by Ofsted for its chhld

:00:30. > :00:32.protection services. The top Director alone cost nearly ?320 000

:00:33. > :00:47.And in came the Somerset with a big reputation in a big price t`g. He

:00:48. > :00:53.was the man in the government set to sort out the Haringey children's

:00:54. > :00:56.services after the ABP case. Somerset Council brought hil in

:00:57. > :01:01.after problems in their services Department. Its social workdrs are

:01:02. > :01:05.meant to look after the most vulnerable children in Somerset

:01:06. > :01:09.Last summer at the council was told that its child protection work was

:01:10. > :01:14.inadequate and in the autumn the government give it an improvement

:01:15. > :01:16.notice. If big changes were not made within one year it could send in

:01:17. > :01:20.civil servants to run the department. Peter Lewis brotght with

:01:21. > :01:27.him a deputy and operations director. The three of them soon and

:01:28. > :01:35.agency cost the council ?740,00 last year. One local MP thinks

:01:36. > :01:38.taxpayers are being ripped off and tailed protection is close to the

:01:39. > :01:45.heart of Tessa who recently revealed that she was a victim of sexual

:01:46. > :01:48.abuse as a child. This is about the protection of children. It hs about

:01:49. > :01:52.spotting the risk and doing something about it. She does not

:01:53. > :01:59.believe that managing the rhsk should come at such a cost. One of

:02:00. > :02:03.these individual is played `t least ?103,000 more than any other council

:02:04. > :02:09.officer in the country. That money could employ ten social workers In

:02:10. > :02:14.a statement the council said immediately improvement was needed

:02:15. > :02:16.so they made the decision to invest in high`quality temporarily

:02:17. > :02:22.directors with a proven track record. They say they have seen

:02:23. > :02:25.improvements and are now looking for replacements. Here in Taunton Peter

:02:26. > :02:29.Lewis is due to update councillors on his progress, he will also hear

:02:30. > :02:34.from the Department for Education who will say that well steps have

:02:35. > :02:38.been taken work is still at an early stage and there is more to do.

:02:39. > :02:42.Undoubtedly the three quartdrs of ?1 million team will face questions.

:02:43. > :02:44.Two hospitals in the West have been referred to the

:02:45. > :02:47.Health Secretary because of serious concerns over their finances.

:02:48. > :02:49.Weston General ` the smallest trust in the l`nd `

:02:50. > :02:52.one of the largest, Southme`d ` ?33 million.

:02:53. > :02:57.Here's our Health correspondent Matthew Hill

:02:58. > :03:09.. Two hospitals, the smallest and lightest in the West, facing the

:03:10. > :03:13.same financial strain. The trust that serves Weston`super`Mare has

:03:14. > :03:16.not been able to break even 40 years and in the past hospitals lhke this

:03:17. > :03:21.were bailed out by trusts that were flush. Under the NHS reforms they

:03:22. > :03:27.must now stand on their own two feet. The new chief executive has

:03:28. > :03:31.cut the deficit to just unddr ? million but that is not good enough

:03:32. > :03:35.for the audit commission who have referred the matter to the secretary

:03:36. > :03:38.of state for health. The trtst that runs the new super hospital in

:03:39. > :03:44.Southmead find themselves under ministerial scrutiny with a ?33

:03:45. > :03:50.million deficit. That is 6% of its budget. But its boss thinks it will

:03:51. > :03:53.break even. It is part of the costs associated with bringing two

:03:54. > :03:57.hospitals together and moving to this site. We believe we can recover

:03:58. > :04:03.most of those costs was then two or three years and our plan seds a

:04:04. > :04:07.return to the surplus posithon in three years time. It includds things

:04:08. > :04:12.like we will have reduced energy costs, being in the new hospital, we

:04:13. > :04:17.are already negotiating better deals with our suppliers as one hospital,

:04:18. > :04:22.and in standardising our repuests for kit and equipment. And things

:04:23. > :04:27.like bringing staff together and operating in a standard way.

:04:28. > :04:30.Breaking even over future ydars will get increasingly difficult for these

:04:31. > :04:32.hospitals as they have to contribute to the ?20 billion saving t`rget set

:04:33. > :04:37.by the government. It's been an evening full

:04:38. > :04:40.of medals for west country `thletes at the Commonwealth Games,

:04:41. > :04:42.but we're still waiting for a first Home favourite Michael Jamidson

:04:43. > :04:46.who trains at the Universitx of Bath, was beaten

:04:47. > :04:49.in the big race of the night. Alistair Durden is live in Glasgow

:04:50. > :05:03.now. There was enormous pressure on

:05:04. > :05:07.Michael Jamieson, the Olymphc silver medallist from two years ago. The

:05:08. > :05:10.bookmakers fancied him to whn gold, so that the home crowd, his face has

:05:11. > :05:16.been on billboards right across Glasgow. Is it University of Bath

:05:17. > :05:21.team`mate was hoping to be the man to upset the odds, but in the end

:05:22. > :05:24.the threat came from elsewhdre. The West Country competitors have won

:05:25. > :05:29.five medals in the pool the night, including two silvers for Shobhan

:05:30. > :05:35.Marie O'Connor but the headlines will belong to Jamieson.

:05:36. > :05:40.After all the talk, time for the showdown. Scotsman Michael Jamieson

:05:41. > :05:45.at the home support. Could his University of Bath team`matd Andrew

:05:46. > :05:48.Willis upset them and the odds? The star was cagey but both werd in the

:05:49. > :05:55.heart going into the last 100 metres. But it was another Scot

:05:56. > :06:00.Ross Murdoch, who had the stronger finish to beat them both. Shlver for

:06:01. > :06:08.Jamieson as it was in the Olympics. And bronze for Willis. Ross has been

:06:09. > :06:11.on great form all season, hd has dropped huge chunks of his best

:06:12. > :06:21.today so he deserves to win. A good race. It is great for these two It

:06:22. > :07:55.is not the time I wanted but I am on the podium.

:07:56. > :07:58.A fire at a farm on Salisbury plain has destroyed crops this afternoon.

:07:59. > :08:02.This footage was taken by the farmer whilst the blaze was at its height.

:08:03. > :08:04.Fortunately no one was hurt and buildings were spared.

:08:05. > :08:06.The military fire service at Boscombe Down, the policd,

:08:07. > :08:09.army and ambulance service have all been working with Wiltshire Fire

:08:10. > :08:23.That is all from us. There hs more news on the BBC website and news

:08:24. > :08:33.channel. We are back tomorrow from 630. Here is the weather.

:08:34. > :08:37.Temperatures will come down eventually as we head into the

:08:38. > :08:41.weekend, we get a drop in temperatures by Sunday and Londay of

:08:42. > :08:45.next week but for tomorrow ht is another hot day more in the way of

:08:46. > :08:49.sunshine and just the chancd of an isolated showers developing at some

:08:50. > :08:53.point in the afternoon. Overnight the lake, another 11, perhaps for

:08:54. > :08:57.many of us uncomfortably warm with temperatures no lower than 06 or 17

:08:58. > :09:01.degrees. More in the way of close creeping in from the east, for

:09:02. > :09:04.tomorrow we have a lovely d`y again. We could see more in the wax of

:09:05. > :09:09.cloud bottling up into the afternoon. By the end of thd

:09:10. > :09:14.afternoon if you sharp showdrs could start up with most others gdtting

:09:15. > :09:18.away with another fine and warm day. Top temperature of 27 or 28 degrees.

:09:19. > :09:23.Sure into the weekend, tempdratures dropping by several degrees and by

:09:24. > :09:50.Monday the top temperature hs 2 or 22 degrees. Goodbye.

:09:51. > :09:58.is getting too much for many people. By Sunday, the temp will be cooler

:09:59. > :10:09.than today. Tonight, another warm and comfortable night for sleeping.
