:00:00. > :00:11.Jon Kay, BBC News, Bristol. That's all

:00:12. > :00:15.The badger cull in Somerset and Gloucestershire could re`st`rt

:00:16. > :00:17.within the next few weeks. The ministry has annouced the phlot

:00:18. > :00:20.scheme will continue even though it failed to reach its targets last

:00:21. > :00:22.year. But this time fewer b`dgers will be killed,

:00:23. > :00:30.With the pilot cull about to start again, it's

:00:31. > :00:33.Faced with criticism from an independent report

:00:34. > :00:35.into last year's cull ` that the operation wasn't effective

:00:36. > :00:38.or humane enough ` the comp`ny running the cull in Gloucestershire

:00:39. > :00:46.The report was critical and we accept that.

:00:47. > :00:49.It did, however, say that ctlling badgers by free shooting

:00:50. > :00:55.free`roaming badgers could be done safely, even in the presencd of

:00:56. > :01:00.protestors. There were other issues raised and we have addressed them

:01:01. > :01:05.through extra training with the shooting teams.

:01:06. > :01:08.Also getting ready for the start of the pilot cull are the camp`igners.

:01:09. > :01:12.The Wounded Badger Patrol in Gloucestershire claims to now

:01:13. > :01:15.have 1000 members ready to patrol the cull zone ` and that thhs year,

:01:16. > :01:20.We've learnt a lot now. We have more equipment this year so we whll be

:01:21. > :01:23.able to see when the Badger does scurry off because when the shot

:01:24. > :01:27.badly, they will want to go back to their sett. But this time round

:01:28. > :01:30.will be able to see them and cage them and get them medical treatment.

:01:31. > :01:34.TB is showing no signs of going away.

:01:35. > :01:39.Over the border, in Wiltshire, it has hit a record high.

:01:40. > :01:41.The latest figures show over 220 herds are affected.

:01:42. > :01:44.Peter Bennett is under restrictions again and can't sell his cows for

:01:45. > :01:50.at least 120 days following a TB outbreak.

:01:51. > :01:55.I'd like to see an all`out `ttack on TB from all sides.

:01:56. > :02:02.From people against culling badgers, from the Government and

:02:03. > :02:07.from the veterinary professhon, as cancer is being treated

:02:08. > :02:17.Meanwhile, planning is underway on all sides ahead of the pilot culls

:02:18. > :02:18.starting again. Gloucestershire Constabulary said today thex are

:02:19. > :02:21.putting public safety at thd heart of their operation this year, as

:02:22. > :02:24.contractors employed to shoot badgers prepare to work the same

:02:25. > :02:33.land as campaigners who don't want a single shot fired.

:02:34. > :02:36.Firefighters have begun a more aggressive approach to the Wiltshire

:02:37. > :02:39.rubbish fire which has been burning for five weeks. Wiltshire Fhre and

:02:40. > :02:42.Rescue have been moving the debris and today intensified their work by

:02:43. > :02:48.dousing the flames underneath with thousands of gallons of watdr. The

:02:49. > :02:54.emergency services have now taken control of the site from thd owners.

:02:55. > :02:57.We've had to remove over 1000 tonnes of waste that wasn't involvdd in the

:02:58. > :03:01.fire to actually get to the area affected. Also, we've had to put

:03:02. > :03:03.plans in place to protect the environment and ensure none of the

:03:04. > :03:10.water runs off into the rivdr, which runs just alongside the sitd.

:03:11. > :03:13.Arsonists responsible for a major fire in Portishead exactly ` year

:03:14. > :03:16.ago, have still not been tr`ced The police firearms training centre at

:03:17. > :03:19.Black Rock Quarry was burning for almost two weeks. The buildhng was

:03:20. > :03:21.still under construction at the time. An anarchist group cl`imed

:03:22. > :03:23.responsibility for the fire but police say

:03:24. > :03:35.Thousands of people are dem`nding that their names are removed from a

:03:36. > :03:38.register held by councils. The local authorities hold the names of all

:03:39. > :03:45.voters but the information can be sold on to commercial interdsts

:03:46. > :03:48.It's landed on every doormat in the country.

:03:49. > :03:53.6 million of us will have to re`register to vote.

:03:54. > :03:54.So far, only 1 million have bothered.

:03:55. > :04:01.And it's the letter itself which has left many baffled.

:04:02. > :04:03.Well, if that had gone out from my office,

:04:04. > :04:05.I think I would have been s`cked, basically!

:04:06. > :04:08.This Nailsea voter was told he was both on and off something c`lled

:04:09. > :04:14.It's a cutdown version of the electoral roll with names

:04:15. > :04:18.and addresses that can be sold on by councils.

:04:19. > :04:20.I guess the council are cash`strapped, so this is rdvenue

:04:21. > :04:23.because they will sell thesd names on. But for someone who is `lready

:04:24. > :04:26.on the Telephone Preference Service, who really doesn't want nuisance

:04:27. > :04:33.calls, surely this is going to add to that problem. They'll be getting

:04:34. > :04:36.letters and phone calls frol companies they might not want. And

:04:37. > :04:42.they'll know your name and `ddress and everything.

:04:43. > :04:44.Councils say they make very little, if anything, from the selling

:04:45. > :04:47.of the open register, which they have to do by law.

:04:48. > :04:50.Here in Bristol, it will cost a business ?5 for 1000 names `nd

:04:51. > :04:53.addresses. It is that idea of selling on your personal information

:04:54. > :04:57.that has prompted a raft of voters to get in touch with local

:04:58. > :05:05.What is interesting is we'vd had a very large response in relation

:05:06. > :05:10.We have had 6000 people over the last week who have contacted the

:05:11. > :05:13.council, primarily through our website, requesting not to be on the

:05:14. > :05:21.Opting out of the open register may spare you from the perils

:05:22. > :05:25.of yet more junk mail, but it will not cost you yotr vote.

:05:26. > :05:28.Those most at risk are studdnts or people who move often.

:05:29. > :05:30.But all current voters will be protected until

:05:31. > :05:44.Bristol City have confirmed that their captain Sam Baldock h`s joined

:05:45. > :05:47.Brighton Hove Albion on a four year contract. He joined City two

:05:48. > :05:50.years ago and last season scored twenty six goals winning pl`yer of

:05:51. > :05:53.the year. The club says it rejected six offers from the Championship

:05:54. > :06:04.An idea which started in Brhstol has gone global. The creators of the

:06:05. > :06:07.Park Street slide have sold their concept to cities around thd world

:06:08. > :06:13.including San Francisco, Salt Lake City and...

:06:14. > :06:19.Wigan. For around ?600, buydrs get an 80`page guide to setting up their

:06:20. > :06:26.very own slide, including all the necessary risk assessments.

:06:27. > :06:28.And that's the news from across the West tonight.

:06:29. > :06:31.We'll see you again tomorrow. Time for me to say goodnight.

:06:32. > :06:36.I will leave you with Ian, who has the weather.

:06:37. > :06:49.. Thursday will see right conditions. We will have an area of

:06:50. > :06:57.showery rain edging its way from West to East. Rain will continue

:06:58. > :07:06.tonight before drifting north. A breezy night. But mild. That sets us

:07:07. > :07:17.up for the rush hour tomorrow being dry and sunny. The cloud will

:07:18. > :07:23.increase by lunch time. It will take until late afternoon to cle`r away

:07:24. > :07:30.from eastern areas. It will be a breezy day. Temperatures as high as

:07:31. > :07:31.20 Celsius. A few showers around on Friday. An improving story through

:07:32. > :07:45.the weekend. It looks like low pressure will see

:07:46. > :07:52.us out for what is rest of August. It looks as if next week, summer

:07:53. > :07:57.will fight back. Low pressure is approaching the UK. Rainfall totals

:07:58. > :08:01.are not adding up to too much. There is some low cloud and hill fog

:08:02. > :08:06.around. Clearer skies reaching the South West later in the night.

:08:07. > :08:08.Temperatures for Northern England and Scotland going nowhere near as

:08:09. > :08:09.far down as
