:00:46. > :00:47.in the River Avon, searching the waters near the footpath whdre it's
:00:48. > :00:53.Then just before midday, the news that everyone had been
:00:54. > :00:58.And although not formally identified, police are sure it is
:00:59. > :01:06.An hour before we found the body, I went to see the family to update
:01:07. > :01:10.Less than an hour later, I had to go back and tell them the sad news
:01:11. > :01:14.As you would understand, they were absolutely distratght
:01:15. > :01:16.They are a religious family, very close`knit.
:01:17. > :01:19.Many members of the family there when I had to deliver the ndws so,
:01:20. > :01:25.Sammuel was last seen by his friends at the Opa club in the
:01:26. > :01:30.Today they were grieving for a friend who'd they known all
:01:31. > :01:37.It needs to be sorted out because this can't keep happening.
:01:38. > :01:45.The council need to have done something not this year,
:01:46. > :01:49.like years ago, when the first casualty arose from this.
:01:50. > :01:53.The 18`year`old from Twerton was due to start university next week.
:01:54. > :01:58.The path he took along by the river was a regular route home.
:01:59. > :02:01.This is a well used path but you can see there's no railings up there.
:02:02. > :02:04.Unless you come down this slope if you've tripped, this is the only
:02:05. > :02:10.There now been six deaths in five years and many people say this
:02:11. > :02:16.Last year following a safetx report, an 850 yard fence was installed
:02:17. > :02:21.along a stretch of the river to improve water safety.
:02:22. > :02:24.For the parents of graphic designer Casper Flagg,
:02:25. > :02:27.who died when he fell into the Avon after a night out five years ago,
:02:28. > :02:38.I would have thought they could design this river to make it safe
:02:39. > :02:44.They either have to do that work or shut this path late at night
:02:45. > :02:48.or have street lights along, cameras along.
:02:49. > :02:51.You can't have people going along these rivers and not knowing
:02:52. > :02:58.Tonight, the waters of the River Avon look calm.
:02:59. > :03:01.But there's shock throughout the city that once again another
:03:02. > :03:11.The extra ?400,000 pledged tonight will be spent on more railings,
:03:12. > :03:13.life buoys and other measurds to give anyone that falls
:03:14. > :03:23.But the campaigner responsible says that fencing alone won't be enough.

:04:08. > :04:12.that this is a terrible tragedy and my sympathy goes to the pardnts of
:04:13. > :04:16.the young man who has lost his life. We at the University lost one of our
:04:17. > :04:20.students three years ago and it devastated the whole communhty. We
:04:21. > :04:25.have worked so hard since then to raise awareness of the diffhculties
:04:26. > :04:29.of the river, and tried to dncourage sorts of behaviour that will help
:04:30. > :04:34.students stay safe when in Bath What are you doing to raise
:04:35. > :04:38.awareness, low? We talk to `ll new students. We make them award that
:04:39. > :04:43.there is a river here and wd have all sorts of measures to help them.
:04:44. > :04:47.We have a buddy scheme, we have student mentors to help advhse them.
:04:48. > :04:50.We encourage them to stick together in the evenings and check that no
:04:51. > :04:58.one is missing from their group We have a bus service until three
:04:59. > :05:00.o'clock in the morning and ` free taxi service. We even have wrist
:05:01. > :05:03.bands this year, which young people respond to as a way of remelbering
:05:04. > :05:08.that they should be aware of something, to remind them of the
:05:09. > :05:11.need to stay safe. Let's be honest, student drinking culture exhsts
:05:12. > :05:16.everywhere, but what is going wrong in Bath? A lot of parents whll be
:05:17. > :05:19.wondering about it. I would not say that the drinking culture is
:05:20. > :05:23.necessarily limited to studdnts Certainly there is a drinking
:05:24. > :05:29.culture amongst young peopld. Nor would I say anything is wrong with
:05:30. > :05:34.Bass. Six students... Four students have died in the last six ydars
:05:35. > :05:39.there must be a problem, isn't there? This is not a problel limited

:05:53. > :05:55.owners to make them access their responsibilities as well in this
:05:56. > :06:04.There are calls for an inquhry into why more wasn't done to prevent a
:06:05. > :06:07.fire at a recycling plant in Swindon which burned for eight weeks.
:06:08. > :06:09.The flames at the Averies yard have finally been
:06:10. > :06:13.put out, but the smell of sloke over nearby homes is yet to go away.
:06:14. > :06:15.Councillors will discuss on Thursday whether to hold an investig`tion
