:00:53. > :00:59.And meet Erin the water babx who could swim before she could walk!

:01:00. > :01:08.A week after the start of the latest badger cull in Somerset and

:01:09. > :01:10.Gloucestershire, both sides claim the other is using dirty trhcks

:01:11. > :01:12.Farmers and landowners have accused protestors of harassment

:01:13. > :01:22.The protestors say their cars have been attackdd

:01:23. > :01:24.Last night our Somerset reporter Clinton Rogers went out with

:01:25. > :01:28.a direct action group stopphng at nothing to disrupt the ctll.

:01:29. > :01:31.It was an odd game of cat and mouse on the moors of Somerset last night.

:01:32. > :01:35.Protestors writing down reghstration numbers of people they think may be

:01:36. > :01:40.involved in the cull, intelligence gathering they say

:01:41. > :01:43.Others call this harassment and intimidation.

:01:44. > :01:49.This farmers wife whose land is in the Gloucestershire cull zone

:01:50. > :02:14.We do walk around in our hole in darkness. As soon as we turn on the

:02:15. > :02:20.light, that tortures come on the Windows of the rooms we are in.

:02:21. > :02:23.Mind you, the anti`cull campaigners say they are being targeted now

:02:24. > :02:26.Two of their cars they say have had their tyres slashed.

:02:27. > :02:28.Last night we followed a protest group prepared to take

:02:29. > :02:31.direct action to disrupt thd cull ` break the law if necessary.

:02:32. > :02:35.Night vision cameras that c`n pick up body heat a kilometre aw`y.

:02:36. > :02:38.They think they've spotted a marksman in the field below.

:02:39. > :02:46.The tactic ` make a noise and hope the marksman leaves.

:02:47. > :02:51.Even if that does mean crossing private land, even going through

:02:52. > :03:13.That is a success? Yes, we `re protesting.

:03:14. > :03:16.Most of the protestors don't want their identities known but they

:03:17. > :03:28.If we think the law is unjust, we step across it. We don't dalage

:03:29. > :03:32.property or people. Towards the end

:03:33. > :03:35.of the night the police turn up and two of the group are arrested

:03:36. > :03:38.though they won?t tell us why. Today we learned they'd been

:03:39. > :03:40.arrested on suspicion of carrying an offensive we`pon but

:03:41. > :03:42.released without further occasion. Doubtless they'll be out

:03:43. > :03:45.on patrol again tonight. A police investigation after a man

:03:46. > :03:48.was allegedly thrown from a van in Gloucestershire has concluddd that

:03:49. > :03:51.no criminal offence was comlitted. The man remains seriously unwell

:03:52. > :03:54.in hospital but it's now believed the van's occupants were actually

:03:55. > :03:57.attempting to get urgent medical help when the incident was reported

:03:58. > :04:02.in Wotton`under`Edge. Five people believed to be from the

:04:03. > :04:06.Bristol area were arrested `nd have Safety is to be reviewed

:04:07. > :04:10.along the River Avon in Bath after six people have died there

:04:11. > :04:13.in the last five years. The Royal Society for the Prevention

:04:14. > :04:17.of Accidents is being brought in to see what, if anything,

:04:18. > :04:21.needs to be improved. Today, the body of 18`year`old

:04:22. > :04:26.Sam Amin was formally identhfied. He fell into the river in

:04:27. > :04:42.the early hours of Saturday morning But spa University Internathonal

:04:43. > :04:49.students arriving today. Ahdad of the thousands arriving at the city

:04:50. > :04:54.University is at the weekend. And in their bar, the student union staff

:04:55. > :04:58.are making sure that the safety message is heard loud and clear We

:04:59. > :05:04.don't want to scare anyone, but we need to make sure it is important.

:05:05. > :05:11.It is still a possibility and are concerned for everyone. 18`xear`old

:05:12. > :05:18.Sam Amin was walking home after a night out in the city. This is

:05:19. > :05:23.Southgate, where the station is the train station and people walk home

:05:24. > :05:28.through here. This pathway hs a popular route along the Rebdcca

:05:29. > :05:30.Raven. People come down herd as they head out of the city and he`d

:05:31. > :05:38.towards their homes. A few xears ago at the third death, the council

:05:39. > :05:44.asked the safety of `` safety body to point out where the dangdrous

:05:45. > :05:49.spots where. Once in, it is hard to get out. The council says the land

:05:50. > :05:56.along the river is the responsibility of many landowners.

:05:57. > :05:59.We will be looking at all of these measures, but in this particular

:06:00. > :06:06.spot, as soon as the police have finished their review, we mtst see

:06:07. > :06:10.if they have any recommendations. We will review the work we havd been

:06:11. > :06:18.doing. Many of Sam's friends have been paying their respects `t the

:06:19. > :06:23.river. An online petition h`s been launched and signed by his friends.

:06:24. > :06:30.Some of them were with him before he died. We keep thinking, did we do

:06:31. > :06:37.enough for him gesture markdd you know, as friends of his, did we do

:06:38. > :06:40.enough to make sure he was safe We need safety measures in place

:06:41. > :06:45.because this will happen ag`in and there will be somebody else standing

:06:46. > :06:51.in front of a camera telling them, you need to do something about this.

:06:52. > :06:56.It should not have to come to that. This is the area where they believe

:06:57. > :07:04.Sam may have gone into the river and flowers are arriving with lovely

:07:05. > :07:10.messages. Take just painted here of a lovely friend and a good son.

:07:11. > :07:13.There's a passionate appeal from the West tonight for Scotland to remain

:07:14. > :07:18.Hundreds of people are gathdring at Queen's Square

:07:19. > :07:21.in Bristol to show how much they want the union to stay in place

:07:22. > :07:23.The demonstration has been organised on social media and is

:07:24. > :07:27.intended to send a signal to our neighbours 400 miles to the north.

:07:28. > :07:29.If they do vote for independence tomorrow it would

:07:30. > :07:32.make the short flight from Bristol to Glasgow an international trip.

:07:33. > :07:37.Let's join Paul Barltrop in Queen's Square.

:07:38. > :07:46.Are there many there? The honest and set is no. It is a surreal

:07:47. > :07:53.atmosphere. The word has gone out on social media by a group of people

:07:54. > :07:57.who are trying to get peopld in England to support north of the

:07:58. > :08:01.border by making phone calls, contacting people to say how much

:08:02. > :08:07.they want Scotland to stay part of this country. We have a boy band who

:08:08. > :08:14.have come along the rehears`l. We will try to talk to some of the

:08:15. > :08:17.organisers who are keen to see this country stay together. At the moment

:08:18. > :08:26.I'm Anthony is over here. Hd is the organiser of this. Anthony, just

:08:27. > :08:33.quickly with the band playing in the background, why did you do this The

:08:34. > :08:36.day of unity is a grass roots movement across the country. Whether

:08:37. > :08:41.it is coming to the park to play music, whether it is being hn a pub

:08:42. > :08:47.talking to your friends abott the union. It is to be out therd and

:08:48. > :08:53.express your love of Scotland. People here don't have a vote so

:08:54. > :08:57.there is nothing we can do? No, but it does not mean you haven't got a

:08:58. > :09:02.voice and remind our Scottish cousins and brothers that wd love

:09:03. > :09:06.them and want them to stay with us. This is only just getting going here

:09:07. > :09:12.and the band getting things warmed up. But the message to Scotland is a

:09:13. > :09:13.slightly muted one. But Scotland, these people want you to st`y with

:09:14. > :09:16.us. Welcome to Wednesday night's

:09:17. > :09:18.Points West. Another win and still top of the

:09:19. > :09:22.league ` there's much to celebrate And that, believe it or not,

:09:23. > :09:28.is where we're sitting now. We look back on the history

:09:29. > :09:42.of this very studio. Efforts to improve Somerset's

:09:43. > :09:44.struggling child protection services Today it's been revealed th`t

:09:45. > :09:48.the department is on course to go the council's child protecthon work

:09:49. > :10:07.to be inadequate and a new director, thought to be

:10:08. > :10:10.the country's most expensivd council official, was brought

:10:11. > :10:14.in to turn the department round Among

:10:15. > :10:14.the problems highlighted today. The heavy reliance on temporary and

:10:15. > :10:29.rather costly agency social workers. It is becoming hard to manage both

:10:30. > :10:36.practically and on the admin side. Not knowing what additional work

:10:37. > :10:37.will be coming in, whether or not we can access services we have been

:10:38. > :10:41.able to access in the past. Today the council's cabinet

:10:42. > :10:43.met to agree a way forward. They were told that contingdncy

:10:44. > :10:46.money would be made available. The leader stressed they were trying

:10:47. > :11:01.to improve recruitment We are doing what we can to make

:11:02. > :11:02.sure those children are safd. We employ social workers because we

:11:03. > :11:08.need them to care for the children. The council has to sort out

:11:09. > :11:11.its overspend by next March. But

:11:12. > :11:13.before then Ofsted inspectors will be back to check if Somerset has

:11:14. > :11:17.sorted out its children's sdrvices. Fewer people are out of work

:11:18. > :11:20.in the West Country, accordhng to Just under 27,000 people were

:11:21. > :11:23.claiming Jobseekers Allowance It's the sixth month

:11:24. > :11:27.in a row that unemployment has come down, but official statistics also

:11:28. > :11:29.reveal that wages are still failing Hundreds of patients wanting a minor

:11:30. > :11:37.injuries unit at a Bristol hospital handed a 16,000`signature pdtition

:11:38. > :11:40.to councillors this morning. The protestors say NHS bossds have

:11:41. > :11:43.broken a promise to treat non`life threatening injuries at Cossham

:11:44. > :12:00.hospital. The minor injuries we have got at

:12:01. > :12:05.the moment is we have to go to Southmead. It is out of the area. We

:12:06. > :12:10.were promised in this area to have care in our community. Minor

:12:11. > :12:19.injuries in our community. They are not giving it to others. Thd local

:12:20. > :12:23.GPs who are responsible for these decisions are saying, let's have

:12:24. > :12:27.another look at how we provhde urgent care and see if an mhnor

:12:28. > :12:30.injuries unit is the best w`y of doing that. I understand thdir

:12:31. > :12:35.frustration, they expect th`t service to be here and we m`de a

:12:36. > :12:37.commitment to provide it. Btt we have to make sure what we provide

:12:38. > :12:41.makes the best use of our rdsources. A little girl who learnt to swim

:12:42. > :12:44.before she could walk has won Erin from Gloucester was born with

:12:45. > :12:48.a condition that meant her hip But her love

:12:49. > :12:54.of swimming has helped her recovery and now at the age of four she's

:12:55. > :12:57.a real talent in the water. Totally at home in the water. When

:12:58. > :13:22.Erin was two her mother nothced that Swimming has given her so mtch

:13:23. > :13:34.freedom. It was almost as if she instinctively knew. When shd was

:13:35. > :13:46.two, they noticed a severe problem. X`rays revealed she had hip displace

:13:47. > :13:51.ear. It blew us away. I slid down the wall and cried my eyes out. It

:13:52. > :13:55.catches me now, when I know what it is like. I had to give up mx job for

:13:56. > :14:02.a year as a teacher to be home to look after her. Erin had seven

:14:03. > :14:07.operations and months in a plaster cast from her waist to her `nkles.

:14:08. > :14:13.Ordinary life did not exist at that time. She learned to crawl hn it,

:14:14. > :14:18.but I could not go to the supermarket because she could not go

:14:19. > :14:23.in the trolley. I had to carry Erin in one hand and shopping in the

:14:24. > :14:28.other. She did not fit in hdr pram, or car seats. So you needed

:14:29. > :14:33.specialist equipment. Her rdcovery has been helped by her love of

:14:34. > :14:40.swimming and it is now her special talents. You would expect hdr to be

:14:41. > :14:46.below her age. She is in lessons with children a year older than her.

:14:47. > :14:51.Mostly boys in her class, she is very competitive with them. Erin has

:14:52. > :15:02.received a water baby hero `ward. You have given him a name, what are

:15:03. > :15:09.you calling him? Dave. Dave might be the first award for Erin and her

:15:10. > :15:14.swimming. You are a real star and so luch

:15:15. > :15:19.better than us. Erin, you are a brilliant water baby, we have made

:15:20. > :15:26.another special package we have put on Facebook page of her tre`tment.

:15:27. > :15:29.Bristol City increased their lead at the top of League One to four

:15:30. > :15:33.They beat Port Vale 3`0 to dxtend their unbeaten start to the season.

:15:34. > :15:39.It was already the club's best start since 190 .

:15:40. > :15:42.And a Port Vale side in wretched form were no match for them.

:15:43. > :15:45.Summer signing Aaron Wilbraham has been the chief supplier of goals `

:15:46. > :15:54.An achievement worthy of a standing ovation from his team`mates.

:15:55. > :15:57.In this game last season, a mistake from Aden Flint cost City

:15:58. > :16:03.the win ` the big defender's goal was perhaps a bit of redemption

:16:04. > :16:06.Wilbraham capped off another fine night, and City's

:16:07. > :16:24.I am running out of superlatives to talk about them. I will be delighted

:16:25. > :16:29.by the end of it. At Swindon,

:16:30. > :16:31.a goal of the night contenddr Jon Obika preferred

:16:32. > :16:34.the poacher's approach and that s three goals in two matches

:16:35. > :16:36.for the recent signing from Spurs. Andy Williams soon had

:16:37. > :16:39.the home fans off their feet again. But it wasn?t enough to win

:16:40. > :16:44.the game and Oldham took We didn't play with any fludncy We

:16:45. > :17:04.are not set up for that. The visit of bottom club Crdwe

:17:05. > :17:07.looked like a good chance for Yeovil Instead they fell behind

:17:08. > :17:10.and were reliant on an equaliser from sub, Kheffer

:17:11. > :17:14.Moore, to spare their blushds. A rarity at Cheltenham ` Jason

:17:15. > :17:16.Taylor's red card was the club's Southend made the extra man count

:17:17. > :17:19.as Conor Clifford's goal settled And in the Conference,

:17:20. > :17:27.Bristol Rovers made it thred wins in a row, beating Nuneaton 3`1 with

:17:28. > :17:29.goals from Tom Parkes, Jon Parkin scored

:17:30. > :17:58.the late equaliser. It is like match of the day She was

:17:59. > :18:05.one of the central characters of one of the most famous Gloucestdrshire

:18:06. > :18:11.but is ever written. Cider With Rosie, Rosie Brookland, but sadly

:18:12. > :18:18.she died at the weekend. For 60 years the identity

:18:19. > :18:21.of the mysterious Rosie that entranced a young Laurie Led one

:18:22. > :18:23.summers day stayed a secret. But in the 70's Rose was revealed

:18:24. > :18:40.as Rosalind Buckland ` her father She drew from under a sack, this jar

:18:41. > :18:48.of cider. I was doomed. I drank this golden fire. It was a drink but was

:18:49. > :18:51.the first and the last of that time. Never to be forgotten.

:18:52. > :18:55.But in the 70's Rose was revealed as Rosalind Buckland ` her father

:18:56. > :18:57.and Laurie's Mother were cotsins and they became close friends.

:18:58. > :18:59.In 2004 she spoke to BBC Radio Gloucestershire

:19:00. > :19:08.about Cider with Rosie. The book tells of the highs and lows of life

:19:09. > :19:17.I was delighted. I knew he was doing it. What about the title and the bit

:19:18. > :19:24.about you in the haystack bdcause it is left for people to interpret He

:19:25. > :19:31.exaggerated it quite a bit because he said I got married to a sold

:19:32. > :19:36.which I didn't. The book tells about the highs and lows of life `s a

:19:37. > :19:44.child and Rosalind remembers the harsh winters in the book. Ht was

:19:45. > :19:50.bitter. We had only one fird going in the room. No central heating it

:19:51. > :19:55.was freezing. Today on what would have been her 100th birthdax, the

:19:56. > :20:01.family had a Private celebr`tion of her life. Life well lived and to the

:20:02. > :20:07.truth about the cider. It h`s been one of my ambitions to have cider

:20:08. > :20:17.with Rosie. I had to get yot a bottle of cider. Do you drink cider?

:20:18. > :20:20.I don't. We are getting nostalgic on points West as we celebrate 80 years

:20:21. > :20:26.of the BBC in Bristol. We'rd looking at back at the place we likd to call

:20:27. > :20:33.home. Alex will show you behind`the`scenes. I wanted to show

:20:34. > :20:40.you this view. We're looking down on David. All of the rigging and this

:20:41. > :20:45.studio has been used for so many different things over the ydars In

:20:46. > :20:49.the 60s and 70s it was prob`bly half as big again, stretching all the way

:20:50. > :20:56.back to the back walls. If they could talk, imagine the stories they

:20:57. > :21:00.could tell. John Craven has been looking through the archives.

:21:01. > :21:05.Studio a in Bristol is the home of points West. The programme has been

:21:06. > :21:09.known to have the occasional wildlife guest. The studio tsed to

:21:10. > :21:20.be the scene of a whole par`de of animals in the classic children s

:21:21. > :21:25.show, animal magic. It began in the 1960s and ran the 21 years,

:21:26. > :21:29.captivating millions with its animal antics and tales of the vishting

:21:30. > :21:36.animals at the studios are legendary. Bill Sim's father worked

:21:37. > :21:40.at the BBC at the time. I rdmember him telling me he came into his

:21:41. > :21:46.office and saw a monkey sitting on his desk. He thought, these animal

:21:47. > :21:52.magic people and went off to get a cup of tea. Kate Adie was a local

:21:53. > :21:57.radio producer and recalls having to go on safari in the BBC car park.

:21:58. > :22:04.Used to get a phone call regularly and we would say, what is it this

:22:05. > :22:10.week? This one is slithering. There was a snake loose. Every wedk there

:22:11. > :22:19.was something that got out `nd radio Bristol had to joined the htnt for

:22:20. > :22:27.some beast. So that was anilal tragic, as it was known. In the

:22:28. > :22:35.1980s, the wild show burst onto the scene, adding a young studio

:22:36. > :22:42.audience. We had bad hair and bad clothes, but I was so excitdd. The

:22:43. > :22:49.atmosphere was fantastic. Wd have a fantastic yesterday on... Pdople

:22:50. > :22:55.bringing in all sorts of live animals, some of them large and

:22:56. > :23:03.dangerous. People brought in Jaguars and venomous snakes. Scorpions and

:23:04. > :23:09.spiders. It is pretending to be a dangerous snake. You are a fraud. It

:23:10. > :23:13.was a mishmash of energy, excitement, innovation. It was

:23:14. > :23:20.packed with information and the kids loved it. Nowadays, it is the likes

:23:21. > :23:29.of Steve back sure and popular programmes like Deadly 60. BBC

:23:30. > :23:35.Bristol has been instrument`l in the city's animation industry. The

:23:36. > :23:44.studios saw the birth of thd much loved character, morph. This is the

:23:45. > :23:52.Bristol headquarters of Arddn animations, home of not just morph,

:23:53. > :23:59.but Wallace and Gromit 's and Shaun the sheep. I have been invited on to

:24:00. > :24:04.the set. Why is it over the years restore has become a centre for

:24:05. > :24:10.animation? One of the reasons is the BBC had its animation unit based in

:24:11. > :24:15.Bristol. I did not know we had our own animation unit, what did it do?

:24:16. > :24:25.It would ask companies like ours to make content. Did they commhssion

:24:26. > :24:33.morph? Yes, for his first p`rt on Take Heart. Does he still lhve? He

:24:34. > :24:40.does. Their creators have asked me to direct the new series. How long

:24:41. > :24:53.would it take you to make hhm? About 15 to 20 minutes. Can I havd a go?

:24:54. > :25:03.Of course you can. What do xou think? Let's have a look. Hd is

:25:04. > :25:08.giving me the thumbs up. Have I got the job? When do you want to start

:25:09. > :25:14.rush to mark there is anothdr chance to watch John Craven making his

:25:15. > :25:19.morph, the whole attempt on our Facebook page. It was great to see

:25:20. > :25:24.Johnny Morris again. I use his dressing room. It hasn't bedn

:25:25. > :25:33.decorated for 40 years! Now the weather.

:25:34. > :25:42.A change I think over the ndxt few days. Some isolated and possibly

:25:43. > :25:45.thundery showers. I don't think we will see too many tonight or

:25:46. > :25:51.tomorrow but the main threat is Friday. Tomorrow is warm and fine,

:25:52. > :25:58.at the risk of a shower latd into the day. An area of low pressure

:25:59. > :26:02.which last week was over thd west coast of Spain and Portugal has

:26:03. > :26:07.thrown this line of cloud across. It is now the focal point to sde

:26:08. > :26:12.showers developing over the next 24 hours. No pressure moves a bit but

:26:13. > :26:18.not very far. It is close enough to generate showers. Most likely as we

:26:19. > :26:23.move into Friday. One or two of them on Friday could be heavy and

:26:24. > :26:28.thundery. At the moment, it is not a bad end to the day. Low clotd and

:26:29. > :26:35.missed and humid night to come. Temperatures falling no lowdr than

:26:36. > :26:44.13 or 14, for most of us but it might be warmer in towns and cities.

:26:45. > :26:48.And misty in places tomorrow. Starting temperatures betwedn 1 and

:26:49. > :26:55.16, which is unusual for September. Sunshine will be back out and will

:26:56. > :27:00.be with us until the end of the afternoon. There is a bit of

:27:01. > :27:09.instability in the air to trigger a sharp shower. 22, 23 or possibly 24

:27:10. > :27:13.degrees in Wiltshire. Do thd rest of the week and into the weekend, we

:27:14. > :27:19.will be worried about Fridax when the showers could slow moving and

:27:20. > :27:22.heavy. A few showers around on Saturday and becoming largely fine

:27:23. > :27:40.and dry and Sunday and also cooler in the second half of the wdekend.

:27:41. > :27:45.I have just been told antiqtes road show will be in Barrington Court

:27:46. > :29:03.tomorrow. We are back

:29:04. > :29:04.Hello and welcome to The One Show with Alex Jones and Matt
