:00:15. > :00:17.a dozen homes and causing widespread disruption to thd supply

:00:18. > :00:23.Seventeen adults and two children had to be rescued

:00:24. > :00:26.from their homes and some wdre taken to dry land on a raft.

:00:27. > :00:29.Tonight water tankers are being sent to the area to

:00:30. > :00:39.Bubbling up beneath the road and flooding the houses either side

:00:40. > :00:46.Firefighters used dinghies to help residents to safety.

:00:47. > :00:50.These children, not expecting a teatime evacuation from

:00:51. > :00:53.their houses, taken by surprise by a burst water main which colpletely

:00:54. > :01:02.I just looked out the window and couldn't believe my eyes.

:01:03. > :01:07.The whole road erupted and ` flood of water just came down the road.

:01:08. > :01:13.The whole road just erupted like some movie set.

:01:14. > :01:17.It was above my knees, say, two or three feet deep.

:01:18. > :01:28.A dozen or so homes were ev`cuated and with no clear timeframe

:01:29. > :01:33.for how long it might take, some decided it could be a long wait

:01:34. > :01:37.There is a gas main that runs very close to the water main so we're

:01:38. > :01:41.just preparing the site, making sure everything's safe, pulling dverybody

:01:42. > :01:45.back and then we can close down the main and we've got the gas board

:01:46. > :01:50.there to make sure there is no gas flow. It's more than three hours now

:01:51. > :01:52.since the water main at the end of the road burst.

:01:53. > :01:57.They're not being allowed whthin about 100 yards of the water

:01:58. > :02:01.They have opened a church h`ll around the corner so people can

:02:02. > :02:04.go and get a cup of tea, but what they really want to know is when

:02:05. > :02:09.Hundreds more could be without water for some time.

:02:10. > :02:33.Bristol Water say they're currently working on the problem.

:02:34. > :02:37.People are saying the water is cloudy and they are being advised to

:02:38. > :02:39.run the tap until the water is clear.

:02:40. > :02:41.The private companies running Swindon's Great Western Hospital

:02:42. > :02:46.They've been told to improvd the way they operate essenthal

:02:47. > :02:50.It comes after inspectors found food and hygiene were so bad they

:02:51. > :02:57.Our Health Correspondent Matthew Hill reports.

:02:58. > :03:00.Good wholesome food like thhs is at the heart of a patient's recovery.

:03:01. > :03:04.But when Environmental Health visited Swindon's Hospital darlier

:03:05. > :03:08.this year they gave the food just one star for hygiene.

:03:09. > :03:11.And the Care Quality Commission found dirty toilets and wards

:03:12. > :03:19.which one inspector describdd as 'absolutely disgusting.'

:03:20. > :03:23.Any dip in cleaning standards or any other sorts of standards of care we

:03:24. > :03:25.provide can have an impact on patient care and infection control.

:03:26. > :03:28.Fortunately, because of the focus our teams have been giving to this,

:03:29. > :03:34.It has taken a huge amount of our effort to make sure that

:03:35. > :03:41.The relationship between thd hospital and those in chargd of the

:03:42. > :03:48.The trust which runs the hospital is the tenant.

:03:49. > :03:52.It leases the building from the landlord, an investment

:03:53. > :03:58.In turn, it employs Carillion to run the day to day maintenance,

:03:59. > :04:12.It's a deal which is costing this trust ?30 million a ye`r.

:04:13. > :04:15.That is more than 10% of its annual revenue.

:04:16. > :04:17.Today, its board of governors were taking legal advice about how it

:04:18. > :04:20.could make Semperian force Carillion to improve their standards.

:04:21. > :04:22.Carillion has been involved in an industrial dispute with

:04:23. > :04:28.In particular, there aren't enough staff to cover days of holiday and

:04:29. > :04:31.there aren't enough hours to clean certain parts of the hospit`l.

:04:32. > :04:33.There are, for example, wards where only two or thrde years

:04:34. > :04:37.ago were cleaned by four people that are now cleaned by two people.

:04:38. > :04:40.But Carilliion says the staffing is appropriate.

:04:41. > :04:44.It wasn't prepared to be interviewed today, but in a statement

:04:45. > :05:18.the company admitted that e`rlier this year, "standards for cleaning

:05:19. > :05:21.A ?1 billion government project to bring high speed internet

:05:22. > :05:23.connections to rural villagds has been under fire tonight.

:05:24. > :05:26.The village hall in Horton, just north of Chipping Sodbury in South

:05:27. > :05:28.Gloucestershire, was packed by people demanding a better sdrvice.

:05:29. > :05:31.The campaign has been organhsed by a classic car dealer whose internet is

:05:32. > :05:34.so slow he has to drive into Bristol to upload pictures onto his website.

:06:05. > :06:09.All day today we have been hearing from people who have been mhssed out

:06:10. > :06:11.by what ought to be an essential technology.
