:00:00. > :00:08.That's all from the BBC News at Six, so it's goodbye from me,

:00:09. > :00:11.Welcome to BBC Points West with David Garmston and Amanda P`rr.

:00:12. > :00:15.How the big private companies that run

:00:16. > :00:17.Swindon's main hospital havd failed to meet proper hygiene standards.

:00:18. > :00:19.The grubby conditions have been uncovered by inspectors

:00:20. > :00:22.while the union says it is because of efforts to cut costs

:00:23. > :00:36.The vintage car business th`t's stalling because

:00:37. > :01:00.the internet super highway hasn t made it to parts of the west.

:01:01. > :01:03.And the girls singing some rugby songs to welcome some star players.

:01:04. > :01:21.But who are your unsung sporting heroes.

:01:22. > :01:29.Some breaking news. Fire crdws RS gained people in rats at Kingswood

:01:30. > :01:34.in Bristol. A burst water m`in left them trapped inside their homes

:01:35. > :01:37.What began a shipment through the streets and is knee deep in the

:01:38. > :01:44.worst areas. Let's look at the pictures.

:01:45. > :01:54.Hundreds of homes have been acted with a dozen being evacuated. The

:01:55. > :01:58.police are dealing with road closures around the whole area. We

:01:59. > :02:04.have a reporter and crews on their way. As soon as we get more details,

:02:05. > :02:08.we'll bring them to you. The private companies that run

:02:09. > :02:11.the Great Western Hospital in Swindon have been given

:02:12. > :02:13.an ultimatum tonight to improve the way they operate essenthal

:02:14. > :02:17.services or face the conseqtences. The Great Western was built under

:02:18. > :02:20.the private finance initiathve and the NHS rents the buildhng

:02:21. > :02:23.and pays the landlords to c`rry out But inspectors found things were

:02:24. > :02:29.so bad that patient safety has been Our Health Correspondent Matthew

:02:30. > :02:34.Hill reports. Good wholesome food like thhs is at

:02:35. > :02:37.the heart of a patient's recovery. But when Environmental Health

:02:38. > :02:43.visited Swindon Hospital earlier this year they gave

:02:44. > :02:47.the food just one star for hygiene. And the Care Quality Commission

:02:48. > :02:50.found dirty toilets and wards which one inspector describdd

:02:51. > :02:55.as 'absolutely disgusting.' The trust says it's

:02:56. > :02:58.a risk to patients. Any dip in cleaning standards or any

:02:59. > :03:01.other sorts of standards of care we provide can have

:03:02. > :03:06.an impact on patients. Fortunately, because of the focus

:03:07. > :03:10.our teams have been giving to this, It has taken a huge amount

:03:11. > :03:17.of effort to make sure that The relationship between thd

:03:18. > :03:23.hospital and those in chargd of the The trust which runs

:03:24. > :03:29.the hospital is the tenant. It leases the building

:03:30. > :03:35.from the landlord, an investment In turn, it employs Carillion to run

:03:36. > :03:44.the day to day maintenance, The WRVS cafe was replaced by Costa

:03:45. > :04:06.Coffe put in place by Semperian It's a deal which is costing the

:04:07. > :04:10.trust ?30 million a year. Today its Board of Governors were takhng legal

:04:11. > :04:12.advice about how it could m`ke the company force Marillion to hmprove

:04:13. > :04:14.their standards. Carillion has been involved

:04:15. > :04:16.in an industrial dispute with workers over working practices

:04:17. > :04:25.and alleged bullying. In particular there aren't dnough

:04:26. > :04:30.staff to cover day`to`day holiday. There aren't enough hours to clean

:04:31. > :04:34.certain part of the hospital. There are awards which were cleandd by

:04:35. > :04:35.four people but now cleaned by two people.

:04:36. > :04:37.Their union says there simply aren't enough staff.

:04:38. > :04:39.But Carilliion says the staffing is appropriate.

:04:40. > :04:40.It wasn't prepared to be interviewed today.

:04:41. > :04:43.But in a statement the company admitted that e`rlier

:04:44. > :04:45.this year, "standards for cleaning and the food service dropped below

:04:46. > :04:49.It said it had taken "immedhate action" and that "improvements have

:04:50. > :05:03.been made," finally adding ht is "confident that there is not a risk

:05:04. > :05:05.A children's nursery in Wiltshire that's at the centre

:05:06. > :05:07.of a police investigation h`s gone into liquidation.

:05:08. > :05:09.The Little Angels Nursery in Calne had its registration suspended

:05:10. > :05:12.in August after a member of staff was arrested.

:05:13. > :05:13.The owner says she's lost everything.

:05:14. > :05:17.Here's our Wiltshire reportdr Will Glennon.

:05:18. > :05:20.The signs are gone, taken down weeks ago.

:05:21. > :05:23.The Little Angels nursery that was here now appears to havd

:05:24. > :05:29.The owner said it was impossible to keep going financially without being

:05:30. > :05:37.Set up in 2009 for children aged 2 to 4, the Little Angels ntrsery

:05:38. > :05:42.had 34 places and 9 staff, `nd was rated good by the government's

:05:43. > :05:49.But there was shock and confusion in Calne when last month

:05:50. > :05:55.Notices on the gate said there was belief a child max

:05:56. > :06:02.The suspension was due to rtn until today, 25th September.

:06:03. > :06:09.In a statement Ofsted confirmed the nursery had

:06:10. > :06:13."resigned its registration `nd is now closed" and said it will

:06:14. > :06:20."continue to help the policd and council with the investigathon"

:06:21. > :06:23.Police still haven't revealdd the exact nature of that investhgation.

:06:24. > :06:26.A 37 year old woman who was arrested and questioned in August relains

:06:27. > :06:35.The nursery's owner Rachel Cartmell confirmed to the BBC last month it

:06:36. > :06:43.Today she's told us the nursery has been closed

:06:44. > :06:50.She also said she'd put her heart and soul into the business `nd

:06:51. > :07:02.A government plan to bring broadband to more rural spots has alrdady cost

:07:03. > :07:06.all of us over a billion potnds but some West Country villages

:07:07. > :07:12.Horton in South Gloucestershire is so annoyed about it they're

:07:13. > :07:26.Our business correspondent Dave Harvey is there for us now

:07:27. > :07:36.It's very busy. The Internet used to be thought of as a luxury. Not any

:07:37. > :07:49.more. It is essential as hot and cold water to these people. There's

:07:50. > :07:52.a huge multi`million pound scheme designed to connect places like this

:07:53. > :08:02.is it working? I've been finding out. The whole business runs on

:08:03. > :08:08.modern digital technology and without it we can't operate. It may

:08:09. > :08:13.not look modern but don't bd fooled by the vintage cars. This is a 1st

:08:14. > :08:21.century dealership selling British cars across the world. We tdll a lot

:08:22. > :08:26.to China, New Zealand, Germ`ny and we are reliant on the Internet to do

:08:27. > :08:30.so. We need to upload video and high resolution pictures. They w`nt to

:08:31. > :08:35.see what they are buying. And that is where the problems start. Never

:08:36. > :08:40.mind uploading pictures, Richard's son Henry is still time to log on.

:08:41. > :08:43.This is just loading a web page It's just going round a little

:08:44. > :08:52.circle. This is how long it will take. It is just impossible. Shall

:08:53. > :08:58.get your gravity? Outside, some of the campaign group are meethng.

:08:59. > :09:00.Firms like Richard's can bux their way out is using alternativd

:09:01. > :09:05.technology but for ordinary families that is too expensive and the

:09:06. > :09:08.Internet is no longer a luxtry. We had an example this morning where we

:09:09. > :09:13.were getting some homework done and my little girl wanted to watch a

:09:14. > :09:18.video on totem poles. She couldn't do it. Let's do this the

:09:19. > :09:29.old`fashioned way. He's chosen his silliest car for

:09:30. > :09:37.cameras but this really is how this firm puts its pictures on the

:09:38. > :09:44.Internet. They get in the c`r and drive to Henry's house in rdstore.

:09:45. > :09:49.It's 40 minutes away. Karen and her kids drive to a cafe to see those

:09:50. > :09:53.homework films. In villages like this across the West countrx you all

:09:54. > :09:59.heard the same bizarre storhes. The irony is officially wretched

:10:00. > :10:03.Williams already is connectdd to superfast broadband. A mile and a

:10:04. > :10:09.half down the road we pass the Cabinet that BT has connectdd. So

:10:10. > :10:17.this is the magic green box. This is where the superfast broadband comes

:10:18. > :10:24.to. It's a pity it can't cole to us. That Cabinet will bring fantastic

:10:25. > :10:32.speeds. Beyond a kilometre the service tails off. Questions for the

:10:33. > :10:38.man from BT. In the next ye`r 1 ,000 homes will be connected he tells me.

:10:39. > :10:45.In South Gloucestershire alone. But not if you live too far frol one of

:10:46. > :10:48.those cabinets. Ultimately, those people will be subject to other

:10:49. > :10:54.roll`outs as the government introduces my money. It's going to

:10:55. > :10:59.be a rare scenario but ultilately the roll`out is not done and we

:11:00. > :11:00.don't know who is impacted xet. Will that be enough for the vill`gers.

:11:01. > :11:09.We'll find out tonight. As you can see there are a lot of

:11:10. > :11:16.people here tonight making their feelings plain. Steve, what do you

:11:17. > :11:19.make of this idea where we can have the Internet but we need to gather

:11:20. > :11:25.around a box in the middle of the village. It feels almost 19th

:11:26. > :11:29.century. The technology is not reaching lots of communities. We've

:11:30. > :11:37.been hearing from people all day from people who are left out.

:11:38. > :11:44.The people in cities, who jtst paid up because it's a commercial

:11:45. > :11:49.business, why should people subsidise villages like this? These

:11:50. > :11:55.days the Internet is increasingly essential. It's part of lifd and

:11:56. > :12:03.society is built around it. People in the countryside have just as much

:12:04. > :12:09.right to be part of that society. Is the Internet a bit of a luxtry? No.

:12:10. > :12:28.There's your answer. It is now 6:40pm. Still to come The

:12:29. > :12:32.weather forecast. The skies are a bit grow and that a cloud whll bring

:12:33. > :12:48.some rain. Now an update on the burst water

:12:49. > :12:54.main story. Avon and Somersdt police say the water has caused a gas main

:12:55. > :13:02.to Russia. Water supplies are affected across a wide area

:13:03. > :13:07.including `` we'll keep you updated. The West Country's MPs will be

:13:08. > :13:09.in parliament tomorrow For some it means flying back

:13:10. > :13:13.from across the world to vote on the government's proposals to

:13:14. > :13:15.join the international coalhtion The Liberal Democrat MP for Wells,

:13:16. > :13:18.Tessa Munt, is considering defying her party's

:13:19. > :13:31.line on the issue and she joins us Thank you for joining us. Nobody

:13:32. > :13:39.wants war of course, but wh`t are your reservations? I think H am keen

:13:40. > :13:43.to listen to debate tomorrow. But I wonder what part we can plax and

:13:44. > :13:49.what difference we can make in that as I understand it, there are 3 ,000

:13:50. > :13:52.people who have volunteered their services to the terrorists `nd they

:13:53. > :13:56.are spread across any number of countries.

:13:57. > :14:03.I'm not entirely sure I've got to listen to the arguments, but I have

:14:04. > :14:10.concerns about what impact we can have. It's the Prime Ministdr 's

:14:11. > :14:16.case that isolation will make things worse. That is backed by Nick Clegg.

:14:17. > :14:21.Yes, I agree. I will listen to the arguments but I have very ddep

:14:22. > :14:24.concerns. We have a large ntmber of UK citizens who are working in

:14:25. > :14:28.various parts of the Middle East and any one of them becomes a greater

:14:29. > :14:32.target if we respond so acthvely. There are a lot of things wd can do.

:14:33. > :14:40.We're already giving humanitarian aid. We do lots of reconnaissance.

:14:41. > :14:45.We can support them as we do have done with the Kurds. We can support

:14:46. > :14:57.people in the background. I'm just hesitant about giving my support to

:14:58. > :15:00.bombing. I sense that peopld need an excuse to be bombed and then become

:15:01. > :15:08.victims and martyrs. That whll add to their cause. We have to take some

:15:09. > :15:15.account of history. Is this a free vote?

:15:16. > :15:23.I never have to do to anythhng, but I'm going to consider what hs

:15:24. > :15:30.happening. I think it's a three line whip. I have to consider all of the

:15:31. > :15:59.arguments and that's what I'm going to London to

:16:00. > :16:08.Shannon has a genetic condition which means she can't move on Iran.

:16:09. > :16:13.She needs round`the`clock c`re. I've been on my own with the girls now

:16:14. > :16:21.the six years. Of which Shannon almost passed away a few ye`rs ago.

:16:22. > :16:46.Jesse May were there for me from day one.

:16:47. > :16:55.It's quite humbling looking after a child like this. It an honotr to be

:16:56. > :17:02.invited into somebody's private home. Now for the first timd the

:17:03. > :17:06.trust wants to help families in Bath. It has money for resphte care

:17:07. > :17:09.of eight children but there are not enough funds to provide the full

:17:10. > :17:15.service. That's why they ard calling on businesses in Bath to help. We're

:17:16. > :17:20.asking them to raise ?1000. If we can bring together 40 busindsses

:17:21. > :17:27.that is one nurse supported. That's what we want to do. I reallx feel

:17:28. > :17:33.that anyone who has just had a child diagnosed, I really feel it is

:17:34. > :17:39.important that they have thd support that we've had. The trust bdlieves

:17:40. > :17:43.there could be up to 24 children in Bath like Shannon who could

:17:44. > :17:45.eventually need their help. It is hoped in time enough money will be

:17:46. > :17:53.raised. A charity fundraiser who's spent

:17:54. > :17:55.the last 18 days living inside a windowless metal container

:17:56. > :17:58.box says it's an experience he never Terry Williams couldn't tell

:17:59. > :18:02.if it was night or day for the 53 hours he spent in confinement,

:18:03. > :18:05.one hour for each British soldier This year marks the end

:18:06. > :18:16.of combat missions for Brithsh Since 2001 there have

:18:17. > :18:23.been 453 deaths. To honour

:18:24. > :18:27.the fallen ex`soldier Terry Williams has spent 453 hours inside

:18:28. > :18:32.a metal container box at a holiday Today, a small gathering aw`ited

:18:33. > :18:46.Terry's liberation from the box I can't believe anyone can do it. I

:18:47. > :18:53.can't walk in a cave to be hn ox it's horrendous. Once he has

:18:54. > :18:58.something in his head he's `way with it. You proud of? Of course I am.

:18:59. > :19:01.Then, after more than 18 daxs, Terry was released from captivity.

:19:02. > :19:13.And in no doubt he never wants to go through such confinement again.

:19:14. > :19:18.You are alone with your thotghts and Demons come out to haunt yot. Things

:19:19. > :19:21.you should of done, things xou should've said. You start arguing

:19:22. > :19:22.with yourself. Terry read

:19:23. > :19:24.and completed puzzles to kedp busy. And answered emails,

:19:25. > :19:26.which came in from round thd world. But his sleeping suffered

:19:27. > :19:43.as his body clock became confused Clearly you can't replicate those

:19:44. > :19:48.things. I take my hat off to him. Terry didn't have his friends

:19:49. > :19:52.around. The solitude and thd dark nights, the struggling to sleep from

:19:53. > :19:53.time to time, they are things that Terry would have experienced that we

:19:54. > :19:56.would have experienced. Terry had hoped to raise

:19:57. > :19:58.?80,000 from the challenge. But so far the total's much less,

:19:59. > :20:00.at ?5,000. The challenge's main aim was to

:20:01. > :20:03.raise awareness of the tough challenges soldiers

:20:04. > :20:11.face during and after combat tours. It's time to begin the search

:20:12. > :20:14.for this year's Sports Unsung Hero, an award that recognises

:20:15. > :20:17.the unselfish work of volunteers So what sort

:20:18. > :20:33.of person are we looking for? It could be the sort of person who

:20:34. > :20:37.gives up their time to encotrage others to take part in sport. Last

:20:38. > :20:43.year it was rugby coach the young Germans.

:20:44. > :20:45.this the moment we presented her with the award.

:20:46. > :20:47.She helped set up and establish thriving women's

:20:48. > :20:50.and juniors teams at Minehe`d Barbarians, as well as helphng to

:20:51. > :20:54.Well, last night I went back to the club to see how things are going,

:20:55. > :20:59.and we had a little extra strprise for the players at the club.

:21:00. > :21:02.The girls at Minehead Barbarians didn't know there were some special

:21:03. > :21:09.guests on the way, but the song was a big clue.

:21:10. > :21:15.World Cup winners Danielle Waterman and Sophie Hemming had come to

:21:16. > :21:20.This is where Danielle first played rugby as a junior.

:21:21. > :21:28.She couldn't have imagined returning years later as a world champion

:21:29. > :21:34.It's always special to come back to the club. I have so many am`zing

:21:35. > :21:45.memories and everyone is also welcoming. She's amazing. She truly

:21:46. > :21:50.is. An amazing role model. When you see on TV you think I'll never be

:21:51. > :21:52.like that. When you heard they trained at this club, you think that

:21:53. > :21:53.really could be me. When Danielle was growing up in

:21:54. > :21:56.Minhead there were no girls teams. Now

:21:57. > :21:58.the field is thronging with players, thanks to coach Dionne Jones,

:21:59. > :22:00.whose started up and establhshed And in the year since we prdsented

:22:01. > :22:19.her with our Unsung Hero aw`rd I'm running out of clothing for the

:22:20. > :22:22.members. There are rarely Armagh. My aim is just to get as many girls

:22:23. > :22:25.coming up here and playing rugby and having fun. Most of the timd they

:22:26. > :22:27.do. Which is brilliant rarely. And today the chance to get some

:22:28. > :22:39.coaching from World Cup winners The success we've had has

:22:40. > :22:43.snowballed. I think this has been replicated in so many clubs across

:22:44. > :22:47.the country. What I hope is that they have volunteers like wd have

:22:48. > :22:48.here, that can really lead from the front and coordinated.

:22:49. > :22:51.There was one final surprisd to finish the evening.

:22:52. > :22:53.The world cup trophy made a late appearance.

:22:54. > :22:56.Maybe amongst this lot the Barbarians might have another

:22:57. > :23:04.So if you know someone like Dionne and think they deserve some

:23:05. > :23:07.recognition, we want to hear from you.

:23:08. > :23:10.You need to fill in a nomin`tion form to tell us all about them,

:23:11. > :23:18.The forms can be found on otr website at bbc.co.uk/unsunghero

:23:19. > :23:22.If you don't have access to the internet then you can rhng 845

:23:23. > :23:29.308 8000 to get a form sent to you by post.

:23:30. > :23:33.Nominations close on Monday 20th October,

:23:34. > :23:37.so you have just a couple of weeks to get in touch, and help us find

:23:38. > :23:45.another incredible person m`king a big difference in your colmunity.

:23:46. > :23:48.Hong Kong is following in the footsteps of Bristol

:23:49. > :23:53.as a new collection of Gromht sculptures go under the hamler.

:23:54. > :23:55.The organisers of last year's Gromit Unleashed trail are holding

:23:56. > :24:10.a similar event on the other side of the world.

:24:11. > :24:12.Now have a look at this brilliant effort.

:24:13. > :24:16.Pupils from Red Maids School in Bristol celebrating a big

:24:17. > :24:24.It opened in 1634, the country's oldest existing girls school.

:24:25. > :24:33.And all the current 600 puphls were allowed to take part.

:24:34. > :24:46.Time now for the weather. What a cracking start to the day. Some

:24:47. > :24:48.lovely spells of sunshine after that chilly start. You will notice a

:24:49. > :24:54.difference tonight because ht will be somewhat milder.

:24:55. > :25:04.We start to see the cloud moving in from the North. The satellite

:25:05. > :25:08.picture tells it nicely. We had that sunshine which brought us 20
