:00:13. > :00:17.The headlines: 16 years old and guilty of make do. -- murder. The

:00:17. > :00:20.police give the families reaction. She was killed in a senseless and

:00:20. > :00:24.barbaric act at the hands of somebody she loved had trusted. We

:00:24. > :00:34.will never forget what he did to her or forgive him for destroying

:00:34. > :00:50.

:00:50. > :00:54.Lorry that burst into print taken away, business leaders asking for a

:00:54. > :01:00.better road network. Snowdonia National Park celebrates his 60th

:01:00. > :01:03.birthday. We will be looking at how it looks after visitors.

:01:03. > :01:07.The mayor of London communications director hits back at the Welsh

:01:07. > :01:16.government for complaining Wales missed out on her Olympic events.

:01:16. > :01:26.Meet Olympic hopeful, Frankie Jones, the rhythmic gymnast. Can she get

:01:26. > :01:29.

:01:29. > :01:34.She was only 15 when she was battered to death with the rock.

:01:34. > :01:38.Herr ex-boyfriend Joshua Davies was found guilty of her murder. The

:01:38. > :01:42.attack happened near Bridgend. Swansea Crown Court heard he had

:01:42. > :01:48.threatened to kill her and there had even been a pet of a free

:01:48. > :01:51.breakfast if he went through with it. -- a bet.

:01:51. > :01:55.Plenty of drama and emotion at Swansea Crown Court this afternoon.

:01:55. > :02:00.The defendant showed little emotion when the verdict was read out, just

:02:00. > :02:04.shaking his head as he was taken down to the cells. His mother was

:02:04. > :02:07.weeping in the public gallery, she reached out to try and touch him.

:02:07. > :02:13.Upstairs in the other public gallery several members of the

:02:14. > :02:18.victim's family chat tds as the guilty verdict was read out. --

:02:18. > :02:23.shouted yes. He killed his girlfriend in a secluded wood

:02:23. > :02:28.leaving her body face down in the debt. A jury took nearly 20 hours

:02:28. > :02:33.to reach its verdict. Rebecca's family clapped and cheered when the

:02:33. > :02:37.verdict was delivered. The pain and horror of losing Rebecca in such a

:02:37. > :02:42.run Dick circumstances cannot be put into words. Since that Saturday

:02:42. > :02:47.in October 2010, our lads have stopped. She was killed in a

:02:47. > :02:51.senseless and barbaric act -- our lives. We will never forget what he

:02:51. > :02:54.did to her or forgive him for destroying our family. We would

:02:54. > :02:59.like to thank the prosecution for their hard work.

:02:59. > :03:04.She came here to meet her ex- boyfriend. The court heard there

:03:04. > :03:08.was a possibility she would be getting back together. She was

:03:09. > :03:14.wearing new clothes. His intentions were far more sinister. He had no

:03:15. > :03:19.at her in order to kill her. -- he had endured her here. Her body was

:03:19. > :03:22.found the next day when her mother reported her missing. The post

:03:22. > :03:26.mortem found she died from head injuries, her school was broken in

:03:26. > :03:30.four places. During the trial the court heard how Joshua would

:03:30. > :03:33.regularly meet his friends at a local cafe and that during these

:03:33. > :03:38.meetings the subject of killing Rebecca came up. It was claimed one

:03:38. > :03:42.friend offered to buy him breakfast if he went through with it. Two

:03:43. > :03:46.days before the murder Joshua Davies sent a message to a friend

:03:46. > :03:56.saying don't say anything, but you might just only a breakfast. The

:03:56. > :03:59.

:03:59. > :04:05.reply came, best text I ever read He dismissed these texts saying he

:04:05. > :04:09.and his friends were messing about but the jury disagreed. And a crime

:04:09. > :04:14.that has hung over a small community for nearly a year has

:04:14. > :04:19.finally been solved. Family, friends, fellow teachers,

:04:19. > :04:23.governors, school staff, and all who knew her have supported and

:04:23. > :04:29.cared for each other during these few months. It is a mark of our

:04:29. > :04:32.deep respect of love, both for Rebecca, her family, and each other.

:04:32. > :04:38.Rebecca was described by those who knew her as a bright and popular

:04:38. > :04:45.girl. She was due to suit her GCSEs this summer. Instead her life was

:04:45. > :04:50.indeed in a mist brutal and senseless manner. -- in a most.

:04:50. > :04:54.Senseless because there was no apparent motive. He apparently

:04:54. > :04:58.hated her after they split up but there was nothing to suggest he was

:04:58. > :05:01.capable of committing such a violent crime. Until today we could

:05:01. > :05:04.not name the defendant because of his age but the judge decided to

:05:04. > :05:09.live that anonymity this afternoon saying the public had a right to

:05:09. > :05:12.know because of the seriousness of the crime. Sentencing has been

:05:13. > :05:18.adjourned until September pending a psychological Review but the judge

:05:18. > :05:24.did warn Joshua Davies he faces a long period in custody before he is

:05:24. > :05:34.eligible for parole. It caused traffic chaos across

:05:34. > :05:34.

:05:34. > :05:38.south-east Wales when this lorry caught fire. It's renewed the

:05:38. > :05:41.debate on whether there should be a relief road for the region, amid

:05:41. > :05:44.claims it's damaging the economy. A few hours ago the lorry was finally

:05:44. > :05:45.removed allowing repair work inside the tunnel to gather pace. Sian

:05:46. > :05:47.Lloyd reports. It had been carrying a load of

:05:47. > :05:49.steel in yesterday morning's rush hour.

:05:49. > :05:52.Now just a burnt-out shell, the lorry which caught fire during

:05:52. > :05:55.yesterday mornings rush hour was towed away just after four o'clock

:05:55. > :05:58.this afternoon. This was the scene facing engineers after the accident

:05:58. > :06:01.happened. The lorry caused an explosion in the heart of the

:06:01. > :06:03.tunnel and a fire quickly spread. It caused chaos with traffic at a

:06:03. > :06:06.standstill for hours leading to misery for motorists.

:06:06. > :06:09.It's 8.30 in the morning, almost 24 hours after the incident happened

:06:09. > :06:16.traffic management schemes are in place and as you can see traffic is

:06:16. > :06:19.now flowing. It was a case of break lights and some build up at peak

:06:19. > :06:28.times for traffic approaching the tunnels on the M4 today where a

:06:28. > :06:31.contra flow is in operation. The Welsh government says reopening the

:06:31. > :06:38.road is a priority but it is not expected that the westbound panel

:06:38. > :06:42.will reopen for at least a couple of days. -- westbound tunnel. It

:06:42. > :06:45.has led to renewed calls for a relief road.

:06:45. > :06:49.Yesterday was a disaster. I had from people who didn't make planes,

:06:49. > :06:52.couldn't get to meetings and employees couldn't get to work.

:06:53. > :06:59.There is a long-term solution to a problem that is only going to get

:06:59. > :07:02.worse. The Welsh government says re-

:07:02. > :07:09.opening the tunnel is a priority but its expected the west side will

:07:09. > :07:12.remain closed for a few days. The Welsh government says its doing all

:07:12. > :07:15.it can to resolve issues of safety and the number of cars that can use

:07:15. > :07:18.the M4. This footage shows yesterdays events as they unfolded.

:07:18. > :07:21.Filmed by the man who pulled the lorry driver to safety. He was on

:07:21. > :07:24.his own, the fire was getting bigger, so I decided to go in and

:07:24. > :07:30.accelerate towards him and stop by the side of the lorry and I've

:07:30. > :07:33.fully the passenger door open and he got in. Miraculously no-one was

:07:33. > :07:43.injured in the explosion. The cost of repairing the damage has yet to

:07:43. > :07:43.

:07:43. > :07:47.be calculated. As we saw significant anger at the

:07:47. > :07:51.disruption. Our Business Correspondent takes a look at how

:07:51. > :07:54.some companies have been counting the cost and what might be done to

:07:54. > :07:58.help. Haulage companies in South East

:07:58. > :08:02.Wales like this always face the brunt of problems with the tunnels.

:08:02. > :08:07.It is impossible to know how much the destruction has cost the

:08:07. > :08:11.economy with late deliveries, lost for good -- productivity and missed

:08:11. > :08:16.appointments. Some individual firms are all too aware of it. This

:08:16. > :08:18.company says the congestion cost up to 10,000, half of the typical

:08:18. > :08:24.day's takings. When something like that happened

:08:24. > :08:29.as it did yesterday they feel sorry for us because we have got the

:08:29. > :08:37.problem that in most other areas didn't seem to have. What can be

:08:37. > :08:43.done to ease congestion? Work has begun here on a new access road and

:08:43. > :08:49.an existing private road is being developed. The idea is Newport's

:08:49. > :08:57.southern distributor road will be extended. Ennoblement link to the

:08:57. > :09:02.M4 to the east of Newport. -- it will then link. It should reduce

:09:02. > :09:08.volumes in the tunnels by one-tenth. Business leaders today have been

:09:08. > :09:13.used their call for an M4 relief road with a price tag of a billion

:09:13. > :09:20.pounds at his door too expensive, it appears in the medium term they

:09:20. > :09:25.will have to make do -- it is still too expensive. Since 2000 donate

:09:25. > :09:31.150 million has been spent on road widening, and introducing variable

:09:31. > :09:35.speed limits. So the M4 is being improved, the critical problem

:09:35. > :09:38.though it is the tunnels at peak rush hour. Short of building a new

:09:38. > :09:44.motorway it seems there is little that can be done to prevent

:09:44. > :09:47.accidents like we saw yesterday happening again.

:09:47. > :09:51.An aide to the Mayor of London has hit back at the Welsh government

:09:51. > :09:54.for complaining Wells missed out on Olympic events. Becomes a

:09:54. > :10:03.celebrations were held in Cardiff to mark the one-year countdown to

:10:03. > :10:06.the opening ceremony. There's a year to go and the preparations in

:10:06. > :10:09.Cardiff are on target. Today's event is trying to get more people

:10:09. > :10:12.involved in London 2012. And for the special guests, the Australian

:10:12. > :10:18.and South African Paralympic teams, it's a chance to settle in to their

:10:18. > :10:21.training camps here. The campus about assessing facilities,

:10:21. > :10:24.acclimatising our athletes to the time-zone, travel, and getting used

:10:24. > :10:30.to the facilities we will be using next year and making sure

:10:30. > :10:34.everything is in trade. A we are using it as a training week.

:10:34. > :10:41.Everybody has been friendly, inviting, I will do for a comeback

:10:41. > :10:44.for a holiday. And while the competition's getting serious on

:10:44. > :10:47.the court, there's a row brewing off it too. Earlier this week, the

:10:47. > :10:51.First Minister Carwyn Jones said the 11 football matches Cardiff

:10:51. > :10:55.will host at the Millennium Stadium wasn't enough. It is a shame more

:10:55. > :10:59.of Wales used rain wasn't being used, for example mountain biking.

:10:59. > :11:05.I understand an artificial mountain bike track is being built some

:11:05. > :11:08.Arabs. It would be a lot easier to come to Wales -- somewhere else.

:11:08. > :11:11.But Boris Johnson's Communications Director, Guto Harri, said it's too

:11:11. > :11:17.late for politicians here to moan and they should act like adults,

:11:18. > :11:23.not like children complaining. Some of the people at today's event

:11:23. > :11:27.agreed. It is too late to get anything else,

:11:27. > :11:32.so we have to just get involved. would be nice to have some more

:11:32. > :11:34.events but to have something here is good. But with one year to go,

:11:34. > :11:44.today's celebrations just focused on getting everyone ready for

:11:44. > :11:48.We are making our way across Wales three national parks, last night

:11:48. > :11:52.Pembrokeshire, tomorrow the Brecon Beacons, but tonight we are in

:11:52. > :12:02.Snowdonia. The oldest and biggest of our three parks that was given

:12:02. > :12:07.

:12:07. > :12:12.its status 60 years ago. Good evening. This is the farm the

:12:12. > :12:15.National Trust are hoping to buy, more on that later. This a popular

:12:15. > :12:21.tourist destination. Half-an-hour ago there were people kayaking and

:12:21. > :12:24.sailing in that lake. It is also home to more than 26,000 people and

:12:24. > :12:34.it is quite a tough job for the park authority to keep everybody

:12:34. > :12:38.happy. There are many ways to experience

:12:38. > :12:45.Snowdonia. As a film extra shooting on steps designed to look like

:12:45. > :12:49.India. High-speed during the race last weekend, or sat with a family

:12:49. > :12:53.drinking in the scenery. But ever since it was first created farmers

:12:53. > :13:01.have been wary of the impact of too many visitors.

:13:01. > :13:06.People seem to think because it is called National, it has been

:13:06. > :13:14.nationalised, and they are free to go where they like how they like,

:13:14. > :13:24.and behaved exactly as they like. 60 years on farmers' share those

:13:24. > :13:26.

:13:26. > :13:31.frustrations. The sheep had been attacked by a dog down there. We

:13:31. > :13:40.asked the National Park many times to help us. The authority says his

:13:40. > :13:46.role is to protect the environment. Our role is to manage people when

:13:46. > :13:53.they arrive here. The main management issues are footpath, car

:13:53. > :13:58.parking, getting people in and out. The authority has also accepted it

:13:59. > :14:03.needs to allow up to 830 new homes to be built in its boundaries with

:14:03. > :14:13.half being affordable, a sign to local people, and with restrictions

:14:13. > :14:20.

:14:21. > :14:24.stopping them being sold on as I have a representative from

:14:24. > :14:32.Snowdonia National Park. How awkward cannot be to have their

:14:32. > :14:39.balance between visitors and people who live here?

:14:39. > :14:44.Since is they assignation in 51 our purpose has changed. We have to

:14:44. > :14:50.look after a landscape but we also have a duty to preserve and enhance

:14:50. > :14:56.the landscape wildlife and cultural heritage and promote enjoyment

:14:56. > :15:00.opportunities. In undertaking those duties we are charged with the

:15:00. > :15:04.associate economic well-being. part of that is the 800 new homes

:15:04. > :15:13.will be needed -- associate economic well-being. Could that

:15:13. > :15:19.have an effect on the tranquillity? We launched our plan and that

:15:19. > :15:23.figure is there for the local need element. The plant addresses were

:15:23. > :15:27.and how many are approved. I was just referring to how many

:15:27. > :15:33.people come here. Tens of thousands of visitors. Does that have a

:15:33. > :15:42.detrimental effect. I'm thinking about slogan mostly -- Snowdon are

:15:42. > :15:47.mostly. We have 10 million visitors in Snowdonia, 600,000 trekking up

:15:47. > :15:56.and down. There will have an effect on the park. We need to make sure

:15:56. > :16:01.that impact doesn't affect the special qualities of the park and

:16:01. > :16:11.we investigate. It is it from Snowdonia. We will be

:16:11. > :16:21.

:16:21. > :16:24.So, London today marking a year until the opening ceremony of the

:16:24. > :16:27.Olympic games. All this week, on Wales Today, we're meeting five

:16:27. > :16:30.Welsh athletes with dreams of competing next year and walking out

:16:30. > :16:32.onto the Olympic Park a year today. Tonight we hear from rhythmic

:16:32. > :16:36.gymnast, Frankie Jones. Shopping on the streets of Birmingham she looks

:16:36. > :16:41.like any other young woman going about everyday life, but this is a

:16:41. > :16:44.Welsh 20-year-old with a dream, an Olympic one. Her dedication and

:16:44. > :16:47.determination on getting to London is inspiring. Gymnastics isn't just

:16:48. > :16:52.something she loves, it is a way of life.

:16:52. > :16:59.I drive to Birmingham from Northampton which is about an hour-

:16:59. > :17:05.and-a-half away, then trained for about five hours, then drive back

:17:05. > :17:10.home again. I have spent my whole life really building up to it. I

:17:10. > :17:17.have just been training so much from one I was 15, and moved away

:17:17. > :17:21.from home and train full-time. Together we mean I had actually

:17:21. > :17:25.done it. Despite training in the Midlands because that is where the

:17:25. > :17:33.best facilities are she is proud to be Welsh with her dad's roots in

:17:33. > :17:39.Pontypool. My dad is so proud. He really supports me, drives me

:17:39. > :17:42.everywhere and my mum when I was younger, she coached me and went

:17:42. > :17:50.with me to all competitions and they have supported me so much. It

:17:50. > :17:54.would be good to share it has been worth it. Warming up in the sport

:17:54. > :17:59.is essential. There is no doubt Frankie is one of the then East

:17:59. > :18:02.people you are ever likely to make. There are four disciplines to

:18:02. > :18:10.master in rhythmic gymnastics, the hip, the ribbon, the ball, and the

:18:10. > :18:18.club. They hurt if they hit you, obviously. Like yesterday, it

:18:18. > :18:24.worked me on my head. With the ball than most. You get is with throws

:18:24. > :18:29.and catches. Any roles or bouncing, trying to trap it on your body,

:18:29. > :18:33.things like that. The best thing is doing patterns like coils and

:18:33. > :18:36.snakes. Does it have to be continuously moving? You cannot

:18:37. > :18:40.leave it on the floor, it has to stay off the floor and move around

:18:40. > :18:44.you all the time otherwise you get deductions. He is one of my

:18:44. > :18:51.favourite because there were no Mechan -- medal at the, moths with

:18:51. > :18:55.that. -- Commonwealth Games. I never really liked it so much until

:18:55. > :18:59.then. This is that silver-medal winning performance, the reason she

:18:59. > :19:03.worked so hard. That success and her reign as UK number one has

:19:03. > :19:08.secured her funding from the International Olympic Committee and

:19:08. > :19:14.every single penny helps. Her custom-made Leotard starts at 500

:19:14. > :19:18.each to be made. Herr Olympic dream will be in her own hands at the

:19:18. > :19:22.World Championships. It is very simple. If she can finish as the UK

:19:22. > :19:26.number one she is in and she is determined to get there. It has

:19:26. > :19:31.been such a struggle to get to this stage, there is no way I am not

:19:31. > :19:39.putting everything into get to the last bit. Someone who knows all too

:19:39. > :19:43.well about giving everything for the cause is cyclist Geraint Thomas.

:19:43. > :19:45.He made his name winning Olympic gold on the track in Beijing. But

:19:45. > :19:48.since then he's developed into one of Great Britain's top road

:19:48. > :19:51.cyclists, excelling this month at the Tour de France. So, as Ashleigh

:19:51. > :19:54.Crowter discovered, Geraint now faces a dilemma. Can he race on the

:19:54. > :19:56.road AND the track in the lead-up to 2012?

:19:56. > :19:59.A cyclists focus had its to be absolute even just to finish the

:19:59. > :20:04.Tour de France. It is the toughest by grace in the world covering 2000

:20:04. > :20:08.miles in the space of three weeks. It has been impossible for him to

:20:08. > :20:12.get caught up in preparations for the Olympics in the middle of the

:20:12. > :20:16.road race season. It is definitely in the back of my mind but there is

:20:16. > :20:21.so much racing to be done before then, I probably want start

:20:21. > :20:26.thinking about it until the end of this raid season -- will not stop.

:20:26. > :20:31.I will probably be riding in October, so that is when the whole

:20:31. > :20:35.Olympic cycle really starts and the road next year, I will still be

:20:35. > :20:43.racing, but in the back of my mind it will all be in preparation for

:20:43. > :20:48.the Olympics. At the minute it seems like a lifetime away.

:20:48. > :20:51.In 2008 he was a specialist on the track. He was part of the Great

:20:51. > :20:58.Britain pursuit team which smashed the world were court to take an

:20:58. > :21:02.Olympic gold. -- the world record. Another world record, an

:21:02. > :21:06.astonishing world record! That race brought his talents to a wider

:21:06. > :21:09.audience and it wasn't long before he was drafted into the British

:21:09. > :21:17.road race outfit which competes in the Tour de France and other major

:21:17. > :21:21.races. Its boss is Welshman David Brailsford he grew up in Snowdonia.

:21:21. > :21:27.He is in charge of Great Britain's Olympic cycling team and it will be

:21:27. > :21:32.his job to help Geraint do his best in both road and track discipline.

:21:32. > :21:42.He focuses on the Olympics because he wants a gold medal big -- but he

:21:42. > :21:47.

:21:47. > :21:50.wants to continue huge void racing. -- his road racing. Thankfully, my
