:00:04. > :00:07.Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's top story.

:00:07. > :00:17.Midwives under pressure. The warning tonight as more pregnant

:00:17. > :00:26.

:00:26. > :00:30.Tributes to a mother of two who died in her tent on a family

:00:30. > :00:33.holiday. He conned investors out of

:00:33. > :00:43.thousands of pounds setting up his ostrich farm. The manhunt for a

:00:43. > :00:45.

:00:45. > :00:49.fraudster who's failed to return to prison. There is a gigantic fire

:00:49. > :00:57.burning. A desperate plea for help but

:00:57. > :01:01.there's no fire. The hoax callers putting lives at risk. And it is

:01:01. > :01:09.the final week for Wales's players to press for selection, but there

:01:09. > :01:12.Good evening. Midwives are being put under huge pressure because of

:01:12. > :01:16.the large number of pregnant women who smoke, drink and are obese -

:01:16. > :01:19.the highest rates in the UK. The problem has been highlighted in a

:01:19. > :01:29.report by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales. Our Health Correspondent

:01:29. > :01:32.

:01:32. > :01:42.Arwyn Jones is here with more for us. Iraq 35,000 babies born at

:01:42. > :01:42.

:01:42. > :01:48.every year in Wales and the Ikea for by a 1,500 midwives. There are

:01:48. > :01:52.some startling figures regarding pregnant women in Wales. According

:01:52. > :02:01.to official figures one in five pregnant women continue to smoke

:02:01. > :02:06.throughout pregnancy. That is the highest rate in the UK. They have

:02:06. > :02:14.also the highest obesity rates and also the highest drinking great.

:02:14. > :02:18.Almost half of women in Wales say they drink while they are pregnant.

:02:18. > :02:24.The government say they have been concerned about this for a while.

:02:24. > :02:31.According to those who care for expectant mothers these can be

:02:31. > :02:37.damaging issues. There is an increased risk of women developing

:02:37. > :02:45.diabetes which can mean that their babies will gain weight. They may

:02:45. > :02:48.also suffer problems after birth. Smoking reduces the nutrition and

:02:48. > :02:55.oxygen passed to the baby and cannot result in growth restricted

:02:55. > :02:59.babies. Some of midwives say they should have a more proactive role

:02:59. > :03:06.so that they can advise women to make lifestyle choices before they

:03:06. > :03:11.get pregnant. This is a challenge that government and clinicians are

:03:11. > :03:13.determined to get to grips Vinny Ness from the Health Care

:03:13. > :03:16.Inspectorate wrote this report and joins me now.

:03:16. > :03:26.So how does this problem of obesity, alcohol and smoking impact on the

:03:26. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:31.work of midwives? When women do choose perhaps less than healthy

:03:31. > :03:38.lifestyles it picks them up under additional risk in pregnancy. They

:03:38. > :03:43.have more of a tendency towards caesarean sections perhaps. Their

:03:43. > :03:47.babies require considerable support after birth. All of these things

:03:47. > :03:57.lead to the mid-life having to have more input through those sort of

:03:57. > :03:57.

:03:57. > :04:05.difficult times rather than perhaps at the early part.

:04:05. > :04:12.Presumably its putting mothers and babies' lives at risk? There is

:04:12. > :04:16.increased risk. Supervisor's of midwives help support Ms Wade's to

:04:16. > :04:23.look for her innovative ways of helping women to choose more

:04:23. > :04:30.healthy ways of living. Whether that be asked report from slimming

:04:30. > :04:40.clubs. There are many reports of good practice across Wales helping

:04:40. > :04:50.women to address these issues. How can midwives help tackle this

:04:50. > :04:55.problem? It is about trying to prioritise and being more front

:04:55. > :05:01.loading. Talking to women before they become pregnant ideally. Young

:05:01. > :05:09.people in the youth clubs. Help people to adopt a healthier

:05:09. > :05:13.lifestyle before they become pregnant.

:05:13. > :05:15.Friends have been paying tribute to a mother of two who died after her

:05:15. > :05:18.family were overcome by fumes in a tent. Tracy Screen from

:05:18. > :05:21.Chesterfield in Derbyshire was staying at a campsite near

:05:21. > :05:24.Caernarfon. Her husband, son and daughter are recovering in hospital.

:05:24. > :05:30.Police and paramedics were called to the Aberafon camp site at Gyrn

:05:30. > :05:33.Goch between Pwllheli and Carnarfon yesterday morning. They had been

:05:33. > :05:37.alerted after others staying at the site had taken the children aged 4

:05:37. > :05:40.and 7 to safety. 34 year old Tracy Screen, the mother of the two

:05:40. > :05:42.children, was declared dead at the scene. Her husband was airlifted to

:05:42. > :05:52.Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor and the children were taken by ambulance.

:05:52. > :05:57.

:05:57. > :06:04.They're all said to be in a comfortable condition. She was she

:06:04. > :06:11.was a wonderful and caring wife. She was a friend to many people and

:06:11. > :06:17.will be deeply missed. Early indications are the family may have

:06:17. > :06:24.been overcome by fumes in the tent. As yet the results of the post-

:06:24. > :06:29.mortem have not been released. This is the second tragedy at a

:06:29. > :06:34.campsite in this region this summer. The Royal Society for the

:06:34. > :06:41.Prevention of accidents say three people have died from suspected

:06:41. > :06:48.carbon monoxide poisoning in tents in the past six weeks. Stoves

:06:48. > :06:52.should not be used indoors. Event matches a dangerous. The dangers of

:06:52. > :06:57.fires and carbon monoxide are prevalent. People need to use

:06:57. > :07:07.common sense to reduce their risks. The tent is an indoor space, there

:07:07. > :07:09.

:07:09. > :07:17.is not the same level of ventilation. Gas appliances are

:07:17. > :07:20.safe for outdoor use only. Police say they are not treating the death

:07:20. > :07:23.as suspicious. Hundreds of Welsh jobs could be

:07:23. > :07:26.under threat following Bank of America's decision to leave the UK

:07:26. > :07:29.credit card market. The company, which has a site close to the Welsh

:07:29. > :07:37.border in Chester, employs around 4,000 people, many of whom commute

:07:37. > :07:41.from North Wales. The company says it will find a solution for

:07:41. > :07:44.employees as soon as possible. A manhunt has been launched for a

:07:44. > :07:46.conman who's failed to return to prison. 49 year old Martin Evans

:07:46. > :07:49.from Pontardulais swindled investors out of thousands of

:07:49. > :07:52.pounds and in 2006 was jailed for 21 years for dealing drugs and

:07:52. > :08:02.fraud. Wiltshire Police say he absconded after being released on a

:08:02. > :08:06.licence. Here's Matt Murray. A former or Welsh businessman of the

:08:07. > :08:12.year, he took to crime when his business folded in the 1990s. He

:08:12. > :08:17.swindled investors out of their savings in an ostrich farm scam. He

:08:17. > :08:23.and his then wife set at the farm up in Swansea in 1996. They

:08:23. > :08:29.promised investors fantastic returns on their money. They sold

:08:29. > :08:33.the meat as a healthy alternative to lamb. They conned 115 people out

:08:33. > :08:38.of nearly 1 million. The investors were on the aware of the scam when

:08:38. > :08:43.the business for that within six months. Before he came to trial he

:08:43. > :08:53.fled to Spain with his secretary and business -- and buses to start

:08:53. > :08:54.

:08:54. > :09:01.a new life. The former her award- winning businessman was convicted

:09:01. > :09:04.five years ago and was sentenced to 21 years in jail, but police

:09:04. > :09:09.released him on temporary licence to an address in Swansea for three

:09:09. > :09:12.days. He was due to return one week ago but has not been seen since.

:09:12. > :09:15.Anyone with any information is being asked to contact police

:09:15. > :09:18.immediately. Still to come tonight, we'll have

:09:18. > :09:21.details of the wales team to play Argentina. Also: 100 years ago

:09:21. > :09:29.these railwaymen were marching for better pay, but two of them were

:09:29. > :09:32.shot dead when soldiers opened fire. If you travel on the trains

:09:32. > :09:37.crossing the border between Wales and England expect to pay around 8

:09:37. > :09:40.% more for your tickets next year. Many travellers say fares are

:09:40. > :09:49.already too high - and experts are warning further price hikes could

:09:49. > :09:53.see passenger numbers fall. With more and more of as letting the

:09:53. > :09:56.train take the strain we are entering a golden age of rain

:09:56. > :10:01.travel. But rail operating companies say that the spend per

:10:02. > :10:05.passenger is actually down, coupled with fuel prices it seemed

:10:05. > :10:11.inevitable that fares would see an above-inflation rise.

:10:11. > :10:15.The formula for fare increases has generally been inflation plus one %.

:10:15. > :10:20.But for the next three years the Department of Transport has decided

:10:20. > :10:24.that it will be inflation plus three %. With inflation currently

:10:24. > :10:27.at five %, that means anyone commuting from here to Bristol or

:10:27. > :10:35.London will see their season-ticket rise by at least eight % from

:10:35. > :10:39.January. However some services that originate in Wales are regulated

:10:39. > :10:46.solely by the Welsh government. They are currently negotiating any

:10:47. > :10:49.fare rises. However the figure they arrive at will only be an average.

:10:49. > :10:55.The train companies could significantly increase fares on

:10:55. > :10:59.some services while reducing them on others. A reader will have to

:10:59. > :11:09.decide whether they have an across- the-board rise -- the company will

:11:09. > :11:12.

:11:12. > :11:17.have to decide. It is a market decision. The cost of an annual

:11:17. > :11:25.season ticket could rise by 80. Many passengers say that is not

:11:25. > :11:32.good value. It is ridiculous. are not doing anything to the train

:11:32. > :11:38.times for the rail tracks. There are delays. Where is the money

:11:38. > :11:42.going? It is the rising cost of fuel that has seen many ditch the

:11:42. > :11:48.car in favour of the train, but trains need diesel to, and now that

:11:48. > :11:54.rising cost as hitting passengers where it hurts. Ironically, large

:11:54. > :11:58.pay rises could -- large price rises could tempt people back onto

:11:58. > :12:08.the roads. It is a delicate matter that the Welsh government is trying

:12:08. > :12:22.

:12:22. > :12:26.Here in the control room they get all the emergency fire calls for

:12:26. > :12:31.the whole of the South Wales area. We are talking Monmouth, across the

:12:31. > :12:38.South Wales Valleys down to Bridgend. A lot of those Cunnane,

:12:38. > :12:45.hundreds of them, not all of them as genuine. Since January they have

:12:45. > :12:50.been 1,200 hoax calls. Crews will not be sent to all of them. For to

:12:50. > :12:56.have resented for calls, crews have been sent out. It is a waste of

:12:56. > :12:59.resources. 30% of those calls have come in the last two months so many

:12:59. > :13:02.of them will be schoolchildren making the cost. He may be

:13:02. > :13:12.surprised that the number of adults making those calls. Cos like this

:13:12. > :13:40.

:13:40. > :13:44.I am here with Cath Gibbon who is station manager. We can tell it

:13:44. > :13:48.must be difficult to find out whether they are a hoax calls. How

:13:48. > :13:52.do work it out? It is down to the skills and experience of the

:13:52. > :13:57.control staff. Following huge investments in Wales we do have

:13:57. > :14:03.communication of mobilising systems that can support identification of

:14:03. > :14:06.malicious callers. We can tell the location of any call on our

:14:06. > :14:12.operators can compare that to the address they give. It is not fail-

:14:12. > :14:16.safe but it can help. You can block people's Sim cars. We can contact

:14:16. > :14:26.the service providers and asked him to cut off any mobile phone use to

:14:26. > :14:29.make a malicious call. Explain to me the risks involved. In an

:14:29. > :14:34.emergency every second counts. If we have had to mobilise a fire

:14:34. > :14:38.engine on a hoax call it means it is not available for a real call.

:14:38. > :14:44.This means if a call comes in for that area we may have to mobilise

:14:45. > :14:51.their engine much -- from much further away. Thank you very much.

:14:51. > :14:56.The campaign has started to date, it is called blood on your hands.

:14:56. > :15:00.It. Southern Shia amounts of money spent on hoax calls. -- it points

:15:00. > :15:03.out. A giant letter M, similar to the McDonald's logo, has appeared

:15:03. > :15:08.on an island owned by TV writer and animal rights campaigner, Carla

:15:08. > :15:18.Lane. St Tudwal's island off Gwynedd is mostly left as a nature

:15:18. > :15:18.

:15:18. > :15:21.reserve. BA's spokesman for her said she was aware of it.

:15:21. > :15:25.A failure in political leadership on Anglesey Council did impact on

:15:25. > :15:27.the quality of services provided to the public. It is one of the main

:15:27. > :15:37.conclusions in the first report by independent commissioners appointed

:15:37. > :15:39.

:15:39. > :15:45.Conflict goes to the heart of Anglesey's history. Edward the

:15:45. > :15:50.first built this castle. More recently the way the county council

:15:50. > :15:55.has been run has led to bitter disputes. Described by one of the

:15:56. > :16:00.Welsh Government's watchdogs as played by a culture of conflict.

:16:00. > :16:06.Five months ago the local government minister decided that in

:16:06. > :16:09.fighting amongst councillors had gone long enough. He imposed a

:16:09. > :16:19.direct a rule through five commissioners. Today's report by

:16:19. > :16:34.

:16:34. > :16:38.them is the first of the progress It was the politician Nye Bevan who

:16:38. > :16:43.once said that when people hear the right words, they expect the right

:16:43. > :16:47.actions to follow. The report makes clear that the councillors are

:16:47. > :16:51.using the right vocabulary. The jury is out as to whether the right

:16:51. > :16:55.actions will bear fruit. There is even evidence, says the report, as

:16:55. > :16:59.some councillors whose behaviour was previously disruptive at

:16:59. > :17:03.keeping their heads down waiting for the intervention to cease

:17:03. > :17:07.before starting to cause trouble again. The report makes clear it

:17:07. > :17:12.will be a while yet before the Welsh Government can end its

:17:12. > :17:14.intervention in the affairs of this troubled council.

:17:14. > :17:17.It's been confirmed this evening that the actor, Huw Ceredig, has

:17:17. > :17:20.died after a long illness. He was 69-years-old. He will be remembered

:17:20. > :17:23.for playing Reg Harries in the Welsh language soap, Pobol y Cwm.

:17:23. > :17:26.He also starred in the Swansea based film, Twin Town and countless

:17:26. > :17:36.television series including Emmerdale and Z Cars. Cemlyn Davies

:17:36. > :17:46.

:17:46. > :17:54.Huw Ceredig in his most famous role, for 29 years he played the popular

:17:54. > :17:59.Reg Harries in Pobol y Cwm. His most famous English language

:17:59. > :18:09.performance came in 1997. He starred as a fatty Lewis in the

:18:09. > :18:14.

:18:14. > :18:23.film, to in-town. -- Twin Town. Huw Ceredig was born in Ammanford.

:18:23. > :18:26.He was brother to Dafydd Iwan and Alun Ffred Jones. The introduction

:18:26. > :18:32.to Huw Ceredig's autobiography says the actor feels he has led many

:18:32. > :18:39.lives rolled into one. His career entertained many and Healey's

:18:39. > :18:42.countless fond memories. -- he leaves.

:18:42. > :18:49.Wales's rugby players now just have six days to impress coach Warren

:18:49. > :18:51.Gatland before he announces his squad for the World Cup.

:18:51. > :18:54.Lions stars Lee Byrne, Martyn Williams and Adam Jones have been

:18:54. > :19:04.handed an opportunity to do just that against Argentina on Saturday.

:19:04. > :19:07.

:19:07. > :19:10.Gethin Jenkins is a real doubt for He is one of Wales's and generally

:19:10. > :19:13.world-class players but now there is a major concern that Gethin

:19:13. > :19:18.Jenkins will be the latest player to be ruled out of the World Cup

:19:18. > :19:21.through injury. He will miss was's first game against South Africa in

:19:21. > :19:25.less than four weeks' time and could struggle to play any part of

:19:25. > :19:30.the tournament if his calf injury does not respond to treatment.

:19:30. > :19:40.It is a concern to us. He is as frustrated as anyone. He has worked

:19:40. > :19:41.

:19:41. > :19:48.hard. It has not been -- he has not been able to get himself right. The

:19:48. > :19:52.hope is he will show signs of improvement and that we will be

:19:52. > :19:56.able to consider him for other games. With captain Carl Matthew

:19:56. > :20:02.Rees, ruled out, at least wears can turn to another Lions start, Adam

:20:02. > :20:06.Jones. -- Wales can. He is one of nine changes to the team that beat

:20:06. > :20:10.England on Saturday. Martyn Williams will win his 99th cap and

:20:10. > :20:17.a bit desperate to prove he should be in the World Cup squad. Ryan

:20:17. > :20:21.Jones will captain Wales for the 28th time. Tavis Knoyle and James

:20:21. > :20:26.Hook will link up where Lee Byrne and Leigh Halfpenny will be getting

:20:26. > :20:31.their first starts in the summer warm-ups.

:20:31. > :20:35.It was a great location at the weekend and I had the feeling the

:20:36. > :20:39.boys were confident. Does the fact you're not involve was getting. You

:20:39. > :20:43.have got to make sure enough but the performance on Saturday is

:20:43. > :20:47.worthy of a win. There is nothing like a victory over England to lift

:20:47. > :20:52.the spirits and the atmosphere and the Wales camp has been fantastic.

:20:52. > :20:55.The players have their final chance to press their case for World Cup

:20:55. > :21:00.selection. The best rate to do that will be to contribute to a winning

:21:01. > :21:03.performance against Argentina on Swansea City manager Brendan

:21:03. > :21:07.Rodgers says he's proud of his side's performance despite losing

:21:07. > :21:10.4-0 on their Premier League debut at Manchester City last night. On

:21:10. > :21:13.their return to the top flight after a 28 year absence, Swansea

:21:13. > :21:23.reached half-time without conceding once but they let in four goals in

:21:23. > :21:27.the second half. We came up against a big opponent,

:21:27. > :21:32.somebody who is going to be challenging not only for the

:21:32. > :21:36.Premier League by looking at the European titles as well. For me to

:21:36. > :21:39.analyse and assist the players and measure them against that, I can't

:21:39. > :21:42.be nothing but proud of their performance. Glamorgan have signed

:21:42. > :21:44.Australian batsman Marcus North as their overseas player for the next

:21:44. > :21:48.two seasons. The 32-year-old has played 21 Tests scoring five

:21:48. > :21:50.centuries including one at the Cardiff Ashes Test two years ago.

:21:50. > :21:57.He will join the Welsh county in 2012 replacing current skipper,

:21:57. > :22:00.Alviro Petersen. In a week when riots in England have dominated the

:22:00. > :22:04.headlines, the centenary of how two men were killed during disturbances

:22:04. > :22:08.in Llanelli is being marked this week. Jack John and Leonard Worsell

:22:08. > :22:17.were shot dead when soldiers opened fire on a crowd in the town during

:22:17. > :22:21.the strike by railway workers. Llanelli in 1911 was a boom town.

:22:21. > :22:26.The centre of tin, steel, copper and coal production. But behind the

:22:26. > :22:29.industry lay slum housing and appalling poverty. The railway men

:22:29. > :22:34.were the poorest of the poor. A century ago their struggle for a

:22:34. > :22:37.living wage lead to the first national railway strike. Police

:22:37. > :22:41.were sent away to defend bigger towns along the line leaving the

:22:41. > :22:50.main route from London to Fishguard unguarded. When thousands turned up

:22:50. > :22:55.to support the striking workers, troops were called in.

:22:55. > :23:03.Around the railway station you had a crowd estimated to be between

:23:03. > :23:10.3,000-5,000. The others were people in heavy industry, found the

:23:10. > :23:14.workers, steelworkers who had come On the afternoon of Saturday 19th

:23:14. > :23:18.August 1911, the striker stopped a train. The troops lined up along

:23:18. > :23:28.the track. What happened next is disputed but it is clear volley of

:23:28. > :23:29.

:23:29. > :23:32.shots were fired and two young men John John and Leonard Worsell were

:23:32. > :23:38.shot dead even though neither was involved in the disturbance. One of

:23:38. > :23:43.the men's descendants says the family never talked about it.

:23:43. > :23:47.I never heard my father mention it at all. The first I remember
