:00:03. > :00:08.Good evening, welcome to Wales Today. Our top stories tonight.

:00:08. > :00:15.Lorraine Redmond is terminally ill. She says she may have to move to

:00:15. > :00:20.England to get the cancer drug that could prolong her life.

:00:20. > :00:26.It is my life I am talking about. I think I need that drug and other

:00:26. > :00:28.people need it. A fund it needs to be set up here. The husband found

:00:28. > :00:32.dead after shooting his wife. She survived. Now police investigate

:00:32. > :00:34.how a man already jailed for having illegal weapons came to have a

:00:34. > :00:37.shotgun. On holiday and on the scrounge. A

:00:37. > :00:39.woman who said she could barely walk admits falsely claiming

:00:39. > :00:42.thousands in benefits. In tonight's sport: The waiting's

:00:42. > :00:48.over. Sam Warburton will become Wales' youngest World Cup captain,

:00:48. > :00:58.as Gatland names his squad. And, instant hero. Swansea's new

:00:58. > :01:10.

:01:10. > :01:13.keeper saves a goal and earns their Good evening. A woman who's

:01:13. > :01:17.terminally ill with cancer has told us she might have to move to

:01:17. > :01:20.England to get drugs on the NHS which could prolong her life.

:01:20. > :01:23.Lorraine Redmond is selling her house and paying for the drug

:01:23. > :01:27.herself. Avastin isn't recommended for use on the NHS in Wales or

:01:27. > :01:36.England. But, across the border, she can apply to a cancer drugs

:01:36. > :01:39.fund to access it. Here's our health correspondent, Arwyn Jones.

:01:39. > :01:42.Lorraine Redmond was told in May she has terminal bowel cancer. She

:01:42. > :01:46.has had chemotherapy, and her doctor said the drug Avastin might

:01:46. > :01:51.prolong her life. It isn't recommended because government

:01:51. > :01:57.advisers say it is not cost effective. She is selling her house

:01:57. > :02:01.and paying over 1,000 a month for the drug. After that, I will have

:02:02. > :02:06.to move to England. It is 20,000 a year. I will have to move to

:02:06. > :02:10.England where they have a cancer fund. How does that make you feel

:02:11. > :02:20.that you have to do that? I do not want to move to England because my

:02:20. > :02:28.family are here. In England, the fund means expensive drugs can be

:02:28. > :02:33.used by patients. It means all these cancer drugs can be accessed

:02:33. > :02:42.on the NHS by patients in England but not in Wales. There are calls

:02:42. > :02:46.for a similar fund here by a -- a similar fund here. Is it social

:02:46. > :02:49.justice that a millionaire can get paracetamol in Tesco's. And yet

:02:49. > :02:56.this patient cannot get Avastin? I want to make sure we create a

:02:56. > :03:03.cancer drugs fund. Some question why cancer treatment should get

:03:03. > :03:13.more money. It is not just a question of cost. We have two

:03:13. > :03:19.

:03:19. > :03:28.compared with other uses of that particular resource. The Welsh

:03:28. > :03:34.government says is already spends more on drugs per-person here in

:03:34. > :03:39.Wales. One pound more than in England per person. But Wales has a

:03:39. > :03:43.higher cancer rate than England. So the amount per person is actually

:03:43. > :03:47.less. Lorraine is appealing against the decision refusing the drug. It

:03:47. > :03:50.was her daughter's birthday last week, and she is determined to see

:03:50. > :03:53.as many more as she can. Nick Phillips is the director of

:03:53. > :03:57.Bowel Cancer Wales. Your wife, Marcia, died five years ago. What

:03:57. > :04:05.difference would it have made to you, if your wife had had access to

:04:05. > :04:10.these drugs? If we had had access, of which it -- it would have bought

:04:10. > :04:17.more precious time for our family. What was it like in those final

:04:17. > :04:22.months? She kept it secret from the family until the last moment. If we

:04:22. > :04:29.had those drugs, we could have prolonged her life. Do you think we

:04:29. > :04:33.need a cancer fund in Wales? Scotland and England has one, why

:04:33. > :04:41.don't we have one? The Welsh Government says we spend more here

:04:41. > :04:45.on cancer treatment than in England? That is a fair comment.

:04:45. > :04:53.Why don't the AA manage these funds properly and redirect the men to a

:04:53. > :04:59.cancer funds, it would cost only 10 million. Why can't some of that

:04:59. > :05:04.money be re directed? Like in Scotland and England. As a charity,

:05:04. > :05:14.you have given the range some money. What about those who cannot access

:05:14. > :05:15.

:05:15. > :05:22.money for drugs? They are all basically die. -- They will

:05:22. > :05:26.basically die. A 92-year-old widow was among those

:05:26. > :05:29.hurt as she tried to confront a gunman who opened fire at a

:05:29. > :05:32.hairdressers in Newport. Local people have spoken of their shock

:05:32. > :05:35.at the chaos inside Carole Ann's hairdressers, as they tried to

:05:35. > :05:37.treat the wounded women. Darren Williams, 45, who was later found

:05:38. > :05:47.dead in nearby woodland, had previously been jailed for

:05:48. > :05:52.

:05:52. > :05:57.illegally possessing weapons. The sign still says Open, but this

:05:57. > :06:02.hairdresser has been closed since the attack on Friday. Darren

:06:02. > :06:06.Williams burst hit in on the afternoon leaving elderly customers

:06:06. > :06:13.running for their lives and the owner in shock. She said it

:06:13. > :06:19.happened so quickly. The door opened, he came in with a gun. It

:06:19. > :06:24.went so quickly, she didn't have time to think about it. He shot

:06:24. > :06:31.Rachel, his wife, in the league. The among the first on the scene

:06:31. > :06:36.were two people nearby. A lot of people were scared in case he came

:06:36. > :06:43.back. Our main concern was to try to help the people because they

:06:43. > :06:51.were quite frightened, very upset. One of them was 92, she said. She

:06:51. > :06:58.was quite scared. She had only gone to have her hair done. She was

:06:58. > :07:06.worried. A table had been pushed over. She said she had tried to

:07:06. > :07:10.push it over to help one of the ladies. Darren Williams shot his

:07:10. > :07:16.ex-partner who was working at the hairdresser and injured two other

:07:16. > :07:20.women. He had been jailed for four months in 2004 after police

:07:20. > :07:25.discovered a number of illegal weapons at his house. His family

:07:25. > :07:30.said he had needed help after his marriage breakdown. Darren has

:07:30. > :07:34.suffered due to the traumatic break-up of his marriage, and

:07:34. > :07:40.desperately needed professional medical attention. We feel this was

:07:40. > :07:43.not given, and subsequently this has failed Darren. In a statement,

:07:43. > :07:48.the health board did not say whether he had been in contact with

:07:48. > :07:53.them. After fleeing the hairdressers, Darren Williams came

:07:53. > :07:58.to Brynglas Woods. Those living nearby say they often saw him come

:07:58. > :08:03.here to walk his dog. Police say they discovered his body six hours

:08:03. > :08:06.after the shooting. Today, it was back to business for other

:08:06. > :08:12.shopkeepers on the road after closing for six hours after the

:08:12. > :08:19.attack. Darren Williams's Ex parte net is still being treated in

:08:19. > :08:21.hospital. Police are continuing to study CCTV images to piece together

:08:21. > :08:25.the events which led to the shooting.

:08:25. > :08:29.Police have been given more time to question two people on suspicion of

:08:29. > :08:32.murdering a man in the Pill area of Newport. The 60 year old was found

:08:32. > :08:35.dead on Broad Street early on Saturday. Police believe he'd been

:08:35. > :08:38.seriously assaulted, and might have been run over, after being left

:08:38. > :08:41.injured in the street. Hawk training jets at RAF Valley on

:08:41. > :08:44.Anglesey have been grounded, as the investigation continues into the

:08:44. > :08:48.Red Arrows tragedy at the weekend. Student pilots at Valley use the

:08:48. > :08:51.Hawk as part of their training. Investigators looking into the

:08:52. > :08:57.crash, which killed a Red Arrows pilot, will be examining the RAF's

:08:57. > :09:00.entire Hawk T1 fleet. Children as young as four have been

:09:00. > :09:03.treated in accident and emergency departments in Wales for the

:09:03. > :09:06.effects of alcohol. Figures obtained by BBC Wales suggest at

:09:06. > :09:09.least 1,200 children go to casualty each year because of drink and

:09:09. > :09:13.drugs. More than 800 of them are admitted because of alcohol. We

:09:13. > :09:23.spoke to a group of teenagers on the outskirts of Swansea. Their

:09:23. > :09:25.

:09:25. > :09:30.voices have been disguised to protect their identity.

:09:30. > :09:38.Sometimes, we have to stand outside the shop and ask people to go in

:09:38. > :09:45.for us. I will ask my mum, my step dad. As long as I don't get too

:09:45. > :09:55.drunk, they will buy me four bottles. We're leading to have a

:09:55. > :09:58.

:09:58. > :10:07.good time. Only six or eight bottles. He tried to start a fight

:10:07. > :10:11.but fell over and split his head open. He had a stomach pump.

:10:12. > :10:20.Everyone has had one bad experience of drinking. We don't train

:10:20. > :10:23.stupidly. -- drink. Clive Wolfendale is the chief

:10:23. > :10:32.executive of North Wales Drug and Alcohol Agency, Cais. Are you

:10:32. > :10:38.surprised with these figures? really, they're very much a chord

:10:38. > :10:43.with what we find on the streets. This is a pattern for the past five

:10:43. > :10:47.years, increasing amounts of drink being taken by increasingly young

:10:47. > :10:56.children. It is a health problem with heart disease and cancer.

:10:56. > :11:02.Those who do drink at 12 or 13, why do they start so young? A lot of it

:11:02. > :11:06.is peer pressure, some of it is learned behaviour from parents. And

:11:06. > :11:13.the marketing campaigns by drinks companies. Often, this is through

:11:13. > :11:17.poster campaigns, and increasingly on the internet, social networking.

:11:17. > :11:21.Everywhere young people are going they are bombarded with messages

:11:21. > :11:28.which say drinking is a call thing to do. Those teenagers we heard

:11:28. > :11:32.from asked their parents to buy alcohol. Is that a big problem?

:11:32. > :11:36.certainly is, alcohol is easily available in supermarkets and

:11:36. > :11:43.petrol stations. Although there are age restrictions, it is often the

:11:43. > :11:48.case, older people, indeed parents, by it for them often to keep them

:11:48. > :11:54.quiet. Or because it is what they do as a family. It is quite a big

:11:55. > :12:02.problem now. It has overtaken illegal drugs as a major problem

:12:03. > :12:06.for young people. The you can get more on this online.

:12:06. > :12:09.A woman has admitted conning more than 25,000 in benefits by

:12:09. > :12:12.claiming she was severely disabled, when she was filmed on holiday at a

:12:12. > :12:15.water park. Annunziatina Attanasio had been claiming the highest rate

:12:15. > :12:23.for both Mobility and Care for five years, before she was caught.

:12:23. > :12:26.Rhodri Lewis reports. Filmed on holiday six years ago,

:12:26. > :12:31.Annunziatina Attanasio shows no obvious signs of any physical

:12:31. > :12:34.disability. But, when this video was shot, she was claiming the

:12:34. > :12:38.highest level of Disability Living Allowance, meant only for the most

:12:38. > :12:42.severely disabled people. The Disability Living Allowance is paid

:12:42. > :12:46.out to people who need help with basic tasks like washing, dressing

:12:46. > :12:50.or preparing a meal. The highest level would only be paid to people

:12:50. > :12:53.who are barely able to walk and need round the clock care. Today,

:12:53. > :13:03.she left court after admitting a charge of fraudulently claiming

:13:03. > :13:03.

:13:03. > :13:09.more than 25,000 in benefits, going back to 2005. We have a lot

:13:09. > :13:14.of investigative avenues, an intelligence unit looking into

:13:14. > :13:20.people's financial history, utility bills, bank statements. We use

:13:20. > :13:29.surveillance. We gather all of this evidence for the court. People will

:13:29. > :13:32.be caught, benefit theft is a crime. The case was adjourned for reports.

:13:32. > :13:42.Plenty of sport still ahead this evening. Just who's made the plane

:13:42. > :13:47.to New Zealand? There is a number seven in every row at the stadium

:13:47. > :13:51.but there is only room for one in the World Cup squad. But there is

:13:51. > :14:01.no room for Martyn Williams. Jonathan Davies will be joining me

:14:01. > :14:05.

:14:05. > :14:08.here on the sofa, with his We've not been shopping as much as

:14:08. > :14:10.usual, according to new figures out today. The British Retail

:14:10. > :14:13.Consortium says the number of people visiting our high streets

:14:13. > :14:16.and shopping centres has dropped by 9.2% between April and July,

:14:16. > :14:19.compared to the same time last year. That's more than any other part of

:14:19. > :14:27.the UK, where the number of shoppers has fallen by an average

:14:27. > :14:30.of 1%. If today is anything to go by,

:14:30. > :14:37.Wrexham could be bucking the trend of a downturn in town centre

:14:37. > :14:47.business. But experienced traders appearances can be deceptive. He

:14:47. > :14:54.says for every good day there are many quiet ones. Stephanie both

:14:54. > :14:58.started a business and she has gone. Bigger shops have gone. The little

:14:58. > :15:04.traders are still here and fighting. If you took away the local

:15:04. > :15:09.businesses, you would be left with nothing. Some businesses have shut

:15:09. > :15:14.up shop and others are about to go out of business. For those who

:15:14. > :15:17.remain, the pressure is greater than ever to stay in business. Next

:15:17. > :15:20.door to John, a new store has opened. This business was based in

:15:20. > :15:24.Wrexham's indoor market for 25 years but moved to the street when

:15:25. > :15:29.falling sales proved they weren't visible enough. The ft fall through

:15:29. > :15:33.the market dropped away over the last 12 months and we decided we

:15:34. > :15:38.wanted a shop window to show our goods from. That is what made his

:15:38. > :15:41.move to hear. But traders are working to reverse the decline here.

:15:41. > :15:43.Given the success of the weekly market, there are hopes it can be

:15:43. > :15:48.expanded to fill parts of the centre which are currently

:15:48. > :15:52.overlooked. Instead of being on Queen Square, they can command a

:15:52. > :15:58.high street and walk on to Eagles Meadow so it links the town

:15:58. > :16:03.together. At the moment, there is a big void in the middle and there is

:16:04. > :16:06.nothing linking Eden's meadow to the market. The British Retail

:16:07. > :16:09.Consortium say the high number of public sector jobs in Wales means

:16:09. > :16:11.people are spending less, worried about cutbacks. A boost in their

:16:12. > :16:14.confidence should see a boost for town centres too.

:16:15. > :16:17.The funeral of actor Huw Ceredig has been held in Bridgend today.

:16:18. > :16:20.The 69-year-old, who died last week after a long illness, was best

:16:21. > :16:24.known for playing Reg Harries in the Welsh language drama Pobol y

:16:24. > :16:29.Cwm, a role he played for 29 years. He also appeared in Emmerdale,

:16:29. > :16:32.Heartbeat, and the film Twin Town. 2,000 people living near the site

:16:32. > :16:35.of the fire at the former Mettoy's factory in Swansea, which burned

:16:35. > :16:38.for three weeks, will be surveyed about the effect it had on their

:16:38. > :16:48.health. Residents in Fforestfach were told to keep windows closed in

:16:48. > :16:53.

:16:53. > :16:56.mid June to avoid the thick smoke which remained in the air.

:16:56. > :16:59.A number of seagulls have died and others have become ill after they

:16:59. > :17:01.are believed to have eaten poisoned chips at Rhyl seaside. The alarm

:17:01. > :17:05.was raised on Saturday afternoon after seagulls were seen convulsing

:17:05. > :17:07.and collapsing on the beach. Police were called and a section of the

:17:07. > :17:10.beach was closed off while the cause was investigated.

:17:10. > :17:12.The waiting's over. Warren Gatland has named his World Cup squad.

:17:13. > :17:15.Claire's here with the details. Good evening. It's been a gruelling

:17:15. > :17:18.two months. Training camps in Poland and three intense summer

:17:18. > :17:21.test matches. All of which got us here to judgement day. After a late

:17:21. > :17:24.meeting last night, the coaches gathered earlier at the Millennium

:17:24. > :17:26.Stadium to reveal their 30 man World Cup squad. And there's one

:17:26. > :17:29.familiar face missing, as Ross Harries reports.

:17:29. > :17:32.Martyn Williams has been one of Wales' most faithful servants. But

:17:32. > :17:35.when it comes to World Cups, there's no room for sentiment. The

:17:35. > :17:41.emergence of Sam Warburton and his recent elevation to captain means

:17:41. > :17:44.there's no space for "Nugget" on the plane to New Zealand. Warburton,

:17:44. > :17:53.who only recently took the captain's armband from Matthew Rees,

:17:53. > :18:00.becomes the youngest man to lead Wales to a World Cup. It is

:18:00. > :18:04.brilliant. Being captain the first couple of times might have been in

:18:04. > :18:08.a developmental tour but it is only last week that I thought there

:18:08. > :18:13.might be a realistic chance I could do it. The coach told me last night

:18:13. > :18:16.and I was thrilled. If the exclusion of Martyn Williams has

:18:16. > :18:19.made the headlines, the inclusion of Gethin Jenkins has raised a few

:18:19. > :18:22.eyebrows. The prop hasn't featured in any of the warm-up matches

:18:22. > :18:27.because of injury, but the coach says he's too important to leave

:18:27. > :18:30.behind. And there's an early birthday present for Andy Powell,

:18:30. > :18:35.who's 30 tomorrow. His try scoring performance on Saturday may well

:18:35. > :18:38.have given him the edge over his back-row rivals. Elsewhere, hooker

:18:38. > :18:43.Ken Owens sneaks in in place of Richard Hibbard, the latest injury

:18:43. > :18:46.victim. In the backs, Lee Byrne's in as the only specialist full back

:18:46. > :18:51.despite recent concerns about his form, and Aled Brew has claimed one

:18:51. > :18:54.of the four wing berths. As expected, there are three

:18:54. > :19:01.specialist scrum-halves. Relative rookie Lloyd Williams joining Mike

:19:01. > :19:04.Phillips and Tavis Knoyle. That means no room for Dwayne Peel. Two

:19:04. > :19:07.days ago, Wales were putting the finishing touches to their World

:19:07. > :19:13.Cup warm-up campaign with victory over Argentina on this Millennium

:19:13. > :19:22.Stadium turf. The next time they run out, it'll be for real, when

:19:22. > :19:26.they take on the Springboks in New Zealand. The goal is to win a group

:19:26. > :19:31.and get a potentially easier quarter-final. We have a very good

:19:31. > :19:34.August and we believe we can do well in this World Cup. Put the

:19:34. > :19:37.date in your diaries. With five wins from their last seven games,

:19:37. > :19:41.Wales are brimming with confidence, and are arguably better placed than

:19:41. > :19:44.ever to challenge for the World Cup. Former Wales international,

:19:44. > :19:54.Jonathan Davies, has popped in to give us his assessment. Give and

:19:54. > :19:55.

:19:55. > :20:03.take injuries, is it the right 30 going? I think so. Martyn Williams

:20:03. > :20:10.is the big talking point. You can see their thinking. They have big

:20:10. > :20:16.boys like Ryan Jones and Andy Powell and Dan Lydiate. There is

:20:16. > :20:20.only one specialist No. 7. Is that a concern? Sam Warburton has been

:20:20. > :20:25.immense in the warm-up games. They made him captain so he is one --

:20:25. > :20:31.the more choice. But the way he plays, he does pick up injuries.

:20:31. > :20:35.Hopefully, he will play in all the games. That is the one risk. There

:20:36. > :20:41.is no specialist back-up for Sam Warburton. If anything happens, it

:20:41. > :20:49.is going to be a problem. It is a shame for Martyn Williams because

:20:49. > :20:55.he is stuck on 99 caps. Lots of debate over who should play No. 10.

:20:55. > :21:00.Three of them could start. Would you go with the James Hook? I would

:21:00. > :21:07.definitely go with a James Hook. We know what Stephen Jones can do. But

:21:07. > :21:14.he has not played. I would definitely go with the James Hook

:21:14. > :21:19.and I have been very impressed with his line kicking. I thought he

:21:19. > :21:29.looked very sharp and I would certainly start with him. 20 days

:21:29. > :21:31.

:21:31. > :21:37.to go. Us how far can Wales goal in this World Cup? It is such a

:21:37. > :21:41.physical group and I think they have a great chance. A lot of the

:21:41. > :21:46.South African players have not played in the Tri-Nations so they

:21:46. > :21:51.will be rested. We know what to expect from Samoa and Fiji. Whether

:21:51. > :21:57.the line at and the scrum going well, I expect them to go through.

:21:57. > :22:00.I expect worse to go through to the quarter-finals. -- Wales.

:22:00. > :22:03.Football and Swansea City are still searching for their first win of

:22:03. > :22:05.the Premier League, but they did secure their first point this

:22:05. > :22:08.weekend. Meanwhile, Robert Earnshaw showed just why Malky Mackay

:22:08. > :22:14.brought him back to Cardiff City. His trademark back-flip, marking a

:22:14. > :22:17.special goal. It would have been disheartening if

:22:17. > :22:22.Swansea City had taken nothing from their first home outing in the

:22:23. > :22:28.Premier League. They had a number of chances and a few missed

:22:28. > :22:33.opportunities from Wigan and it will come down to a penalty saved.

:22:34. > :22:41.The new goalkeeper testate and passed with flying colours. Instant

:22:53. > :22:59.been disappointing to have lost that game having had so much

:22:59. > :23:01.control. Swansea place Jewsbury in the Carling Cup tomorrow night when

:23:01. > :23:06.Cardiff City play Huddersfield after drawing in the league with

:23:06. > :23:14.Burnley. It came down to Robert Earnshaw to rescue the point. A

:23:14. > :23:20.milestone for him with his 200 Career Girl. -- Two hundredth Korea

:23:20. > :23:30.goal. The manager still wants to add some new recruits. We are still

:23:30. > :23:36.

:23:36. > :23:40.looking to bring people in. We have been so short in numbers. In the

:23:40. > :23:46.Blue Square Premier, a goalless draw for New Court -- Newport

:23:46. > :23:52.County but Wrexham beat Llyn Brenig 2-1. They are on equal two points

:23:54. > :23:57.the London Paralympic Games and one Welsh athlete's preparations

:23:57. > :24:00.couldn't be going better. You may remember a few weeks ago we

:24:00. > :24:03.featured Nathan Stephens as one of our five athletes to follow as we

:24:03. > :24:06.countdown to next year. Well, he's already world champion and this

:24:06. > :24:09.weekend he smashed the world record in the F57 javelin, competing at

:24:09. > :24:13.the Czech Athletics Open. It's his first ever throw in excess of 40

:24:13. > :24:16.metres and makes him a firm favourite for gold next year.

:24:16. > :24:18.It was two wins on the bounce for Glamorgan's cricketers at Colwyn

:24:54. > :24:57.fair weather around today. Dry and largely bright. The rest of the

:24:57. > :25:00.week is looking a bit more unsettled with low pressure

:25:23. > :25:28.for tomorrow showing an area of low pressure pushing up from the south

:25:28. > :25:31.east and there is another one waiting out across the Atlantic. So

:25:31. > :25:36.for the rush hour tomorrow, the south east will be wet and

:25:36. > :25:44.miserable. Elsewhere, dry but cloudy. Sunny spells developing

:25:44. > :25:49.through the day. The best of it in the north and west. A better

:25:49. > :25:59.afternoon for all. Drier and brighter. The temperatures, 16C to

:26:10. > :26:14.night will be cloudy again with a few showers coming in off the sea.

:26:14. > :26:17.Still mild with the temperatures ranging between 10C and 13C. On

:26:17. > :26:20.Wednesday, another low pushing in from the west, so rain spreading in

:26:21. > :26:25.from the west. Moderate southwesterly winds with highs of

:26:25. > :26:29.16C to 19C. As for the outlook, low pressure taking charge from the

:26:33. > :26:35.further showers or longer spells of rain, some of which could be heavy.

:26:35. > :26:43.However, drier and brighter interludes are still likely and it

:26:43. > :26:46.It's coming up to 7:00pm. Tonight's main news again: Libyan rebel
