:00:08. > :00:12.Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's top story: The boy terrorised by

:00:12. > :00:17.his neighbour's dog in a savage attack. His sister tells us what

:00:17. > :00:24.happened. Of it grabbed my little brother's

:00:24. > :00:28.right hand. And chased us around the house, upstairs. It took his

:00:28. > :00:35.hand, pushed him into the corner and bit his face.

:00:35. > :00:39.The man who drove this 4x4 up Snowdon tells us why he did it..

:00:39. > :00:46.Out of a list of 50 things to do before you die, this was one of

:00:46. > :00:51.them. This was at the top of the list. The other 49 will not be done

:00:51. > :00:55.because I will be sued from kingdom come. And, a ticket to ride. Unions

:00:55. > :01:00.say they might be more costly if plans to close 22 station offices

:01:00. > :01:03.get the green light. In tonight's sport: Plenty to

:01:03. > :01:06.ponder. There's mixed injury news for Gatland. But patriotic crowds

:01:06. > :01:14.turn out in Wellington, to watch Wales train ahead of their first

:01:14. > :01:21.match. It was amazing to see how many Welsh people were there.

:01:21. > :01:25.this suit on the internet, it is special. So far, it has been

:01:25. > :01:35.friendly and relaxed in this rugby- mad city. Tomorrow, Wales will

:01:35. > :01:42.

:01:42. > :01:46.concentrate exclusively on the Good evening.

:01:46. > :01:49.The father of a boy who was savaged by his neighbour's dog has called

:01:49. > :01:53.for changes to the law. The attack on six-year-old Erfan Ali went on

:01:53. > :01:57.for 15 minutes. He was bitten on the face and hands, and his family

:01:57. > :02:00.say he's lucky to be alive. The dog, thought to have been a Rhodesian

:02:00. > :02:02.Ridgeback, has been put down. Caroline Evans' report contains

:02:02. > :02:07.pictures that some viewers may find upsetting.

:02:07. > :02:11.Just home from hospital. Since the attack by next door's dog, Erfan

:02:11. > :02:14.Ali has had to undergo four hours of surgery. He hasn't spoken much

:02:15. > :02:19.since, but did say to his father, "I tried to stop it, but I

:02:19. > :02:23.couldn't." The dog, named Tyson, is understood to have been a Rhodesian

:02:23. > :02:27.Ridgeback. It's an animal originally bred in Africa for

:02:27. > :02:31.hunting, and used to pursue lions. Erfan's sister, who with their

:02:31. > :02:40.mother, tried to fend off the animal, says she thought he was

:02:40. > :02:45.going to be killed. My mum was doing the washing here, getting the

:02:45. > :02:52.clothes end. My brother was helping. The dog came here, knocking

:02:52. > :02:56.everything down, breaking this. As you can see. It came through the

:02:56. > :03:03.gap, circling and chasing. mother and brother tried to run

:03:03. > :03:11.away into the house, but the dog followed them. My mum and brother

:03:11. > :03:15.ran inside, tried to get it to go. The doggy but -- the dog went in,

:03:15. > :03:19.chased him around. It went mad. Unable to stop him through their

:03:19. > :03:24.back door, the dog pursued them through the kitchen, and into the

:03:24. > :03:33.front hall. The family say the attack went on for 15 minutes. In

:03:33. > :03:40.the end, it took two people to get the dog off Erfan. The dog followed

:03:40. > :03:44.him into the landing, biting his right, left cheek, his hand. It was

:03:44. > :03:48.horrifying. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is not one of the four breeds of

:03:48. > :03:51.dog covered by the Dangerous Dogs Act. And Erfan's father Dilwah says

:03:51. > :03:59.he now wants the law changed to bring back the dog licence, which

:03:59. > :04:09.was abolished in 1987. My child, I don't want this to happen to other

:04:09. > :04:14.families. Because, I am really horrified with this. I will urge

:04:14. > :04:19.all local politicians and authorities to take this matter

:04:19. > :04:23.seriously. If you're going to kick this type of dog you have to make

:04:23. > :04:26.sure they are properly enclosed, exercised and well looked after.

:04:26. > :04:28.Nothing can justify something like this. The attack is being

:04:29. > :04:31.investigated by police. Meanwhile, Erfan faces years of medical

:04:31. > :04:35.treatment. He'll will have to undergo extensive surgery and skin

:04:36. > :04:40.grafts as he grows up. It's too early to tell if one side of his

:04:40. > :04:45.face will be paralysed. Claire Hargrave is an animal

:04:45. > :04:49.psychologist, and an expert in pet behaviour. This attack is reported

:04:49. > :04:57.to have gone on for 15 minutes. How unusual is a persistent attack like

:04:57. > :05:01.this? We needed to put canine aggression

:05:01. > :05:04.into perspective. Humans have a tremendous repertoire of

:05:04. > :05:09.communication and consequently we can avoid having to become

:05:09. > :05:14.aggressive. If an animal is faced with a potential threat, it needs

:05:14. > :05:20.to maintain a distance between itself and the threat. It does this

:05:20. > :05:25.through subtle aggression, and later, a bite. The difference in

:05:25. > :05:30.here is we have a sustained attack. This is most likely to be due to

:05:30. > :05:35.the fact this is a hunting dog, and as a consequence, the repertoire of

:05:35. > :05:40.his behaviour would have been initiated by movements associated

:05:40. > :05:43.with the hunting procedure and it would have kept on. Research

:05:43. > :05:48.suggests when natural behaviours are frustrated and prevented, when

:05:48. > :05:56.an animal gets an opportunity to engage in those babies, it will do

:05:56. > :05:59.so to excess. Is this familiar behaviour in this breed?

:05:59. > :06:05.specifically within the range of domestic examples of this breed,

:06:05. > :06:12.but this breed has evolved to hunt. When you have movements behind a

:06:12. > :06:16.fence, shadowy movement, it is likely to engage this sequence of

:06:16. > :06:20.reaction and it will difficult for the animal to turn it off once it

:06:20. > :06:29.has been initiated. Hence, the difficulty the owners had in

:06:29. > :06:32.stopping it. Are children more vulnerable to attack than adults?

:06:32. > :06:37.It is unfortunate that children are far more unpredictable in the way

:06:37. > :06:42.they move, they have high-pitched voices, and a lot of animal find

:06:42. > :06:48.this extremely arousing in the way they move and also in some cases

:06:48. > :06:55.they haven't been adequately prepared to deal with this and they

:06:55. > :06:59.find it frightening. And they have to engage in aggression.

:06:59. > :07:02.The An experienced climber has died after falling off a cliff into the

:07:02. > :07:05.sea in Pembrokeshire. This footage from the RNLI shows the moment when

:07:05. > :07:07.emergency services arrived at Stackpole Head yesterday. A man and

:07:07. > :07:14.woman were airlifted to Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest. The

:07:14. > :07:17.woman died, and the man was treated for minor injuries.

:07:17. > :07:20.The insurance company Admiral is to create 200 new jobs at their

:07:21. > :07:24.offices in Swansea. The company already employs 1,600 people in the

:07:24. > :07:29.city. It wants to expand its operations, and will be leasing

:07:29. > :07:33.offices at Swansea Vale from the Welsh Government.

:07:33. > :07:37.A man who drove his car up Snowdon, and left it parked close to the

:07:37. > :07:40.summit, has spoken exclusively to Wales Today, and said it was on his

:07:40. > :07:45.list of things to do before he dies. Craig Williams, from Cheltenham,

:07:45. > :07:48.has been charged with driving a vehicle on unauthorised land. The

:07:48. > :07:54.authorities are now trying to work out how to bring it back down the

:07:54. > :08:01.mountain. Roger Pinney is at the foot of Snowdon.

:08:02. > :08:05.The reason I'm not at the top is technical. This 4x4 is in a

:08:05. > :08:08.particularly windswept spot. We simply weren't able to get a live

:08:08. > :08:12.link from there this evening. But I went up the mountain earlier today.

:08:12. > :08:20.We got some exclusive pictures. And I spoke to the man who took it

:08:20. > :08:25.there. It seemed like a good idea at the

:08:25. > :08:30.time but has left an enormous headache and an unanswered question,

:08:30. > :08:35.how to get it down. We found the driver at the bottom of the

:08:36. > :08:42.mountain pondering his options. He told me it took him nine hours to

:08:42. > :08:47.get his 4x4, up Snowdon. Why? of a list of 50 thing to do before

:08:47. > :08:51.you die, this is one of them. If you can consider it is on the top

:08:51. > :08:59.of the list, the other 49 are not going to be able to be done,

:08:59. > :09:04.because my backside will be sued from kingdom come. Was it a pub is

:09:04. > :09:09.decent -- publicity stunt? It was done as an impulsive spur-of-the-

:09:09. > :09:14.moment act. People are saying you have been irresponsible. I do

:09:15. > :09:19.appreciate that. They say it is a selfish act. I can relate to that

:09:19. > :09:23.as well. And no other people have been saying, you need to be in a

:09:23. > :09:33.mental institution, you are crazy. Others are saying, palms up, fair

:09:33. > :09:39.

:09:39. > :09:43.play. -- thumbs up. Since 1904, there had been several attempts to

:09:43. > :09:53.get up the mountain bike car. This one was captured travelling up

:09:53. > :09:54.

:09:54. > :09:57.the railway track in 1917. The idea of was a panic to get up and down

:09:57. > :10:03.the mountain in one night. Photos with have been the only evidence.

:10:03. > :10:07.The plan went astray because the climb took longer than expected.

:10:07. > :10:11.The best that can be said is it is neatly parked and it gives walkers

:10:11. > :10:19.something to look at when the clouds are down low. Getting it up

:10:19. > :10:25.he was a challenge, getting it down again will be a challenge as well.

:10:25. > :10:33.Some mixed reactions. I was surprised, and thought it was a

:10:33. > :10:38.taxi! It is freezing. It is a bit odd to see this for so far up.

:10:38. > :10:43.would like to leave the mountain as we found it. Leaving Iraq appeared

:10:43. > :10:48.is far from doing that. That's the point, it can't stay there. Options

:10:48. > :10:53.include driving it away, flying it out or bring it down on the railway.

:10:53. > :10:56.There are problems with all of them. In terms of where the vehicle is

:10:56. > :11:03.and where it needs to get to, somebody will have to get behind

:11:03. > :11:07.the wheel. I cannot indemnify my staff. Craig Williams says, give

:11:07. > :11:13.him his keys and he will drive it. He is facing prosecution for taking

:11:13. > :11:21.his 4x4 and abandoning it. So for now it is not going anywhere, at

:11:21. > :11:24.least until the weather changes and someone comes up with a plan.

:11:24. > :11:30.There have been concerns calls between the mountain railway,

:11:30. > :11:34.national park and police, trying to figure out where to go next.

:11:34. > :11:39.They're still looking at flying it out by Chinook helicopter come up

:11:39. > :11:42.or chopping it up into bits and brilliant down on the train. Craig

:11:42. > :11:48.Williams who owns the vehicle says he is keen to get it back because

:11:48. > :11:52.he needs it to drive back to his home in Cheltenham. There is one

:11:52. > :12:02.unanswered question. This vehicle is part just below the summit. I

:12:02. > :12:05.

:12:05. > :12:09.asked the owner if he actually got to the top. He wouldn't answer.

:12:09. > :12:12.The Environment Agency says it has found the source of red diesel in

:12:12. > :12:15.the water in Aberystwyth harbour over the weekend. An investigation

:12:15. > :12:18.has traced the oil to a local company. The spill has left an

:12:18. > :12:27.unpleasant smell, but public health officials say it isn't harmful.

:12:27. > :12:31.People living nearby have been asked to keep their windows closed.

:12:32. > :12:41.That sort of spillage is not a problem, it is more a nuisance

:12:41. > :12:45.factor, though it's Mull. Diesel all over your hands. And for the

:12:45. > :12:49.commercial boats, the ladders are coated. It is not very pleasant at

:12:49. > :12:53.all. Join me in a few minutes. Welsh support in Wellington. Fans

:12:53. > :12:57.turn up to watch them train, ahead of their opening World Cup match.

:12:57. > :13:01.And, the side to play South Africa is named on Friday, as Warren

:13:01. > :13:09.Gatland ponders his starting 15. All the latest injury news from the

:13:09. > :13:13.Ticket stations at 22 platforms across the country could close, as

:13:13. > :13:17.part of plans to cut costs. That's the warning from one transport

:13:17. > :13:20.union which claims it's not only bad news for staff, but for

:13:20. > :13:24.passengers as well, who could end up paying more for tickets. 12

:13:24. > :13:34.stations in the south could be affected, with a further ten across

:13:34. > :13:38.

:13:38. > :13:42.West, Mid and North Wales, from They are a familiar sight at most

:13:42. > :13:45.stations: Ticket offices or booths where passengers can get advice and

:13:45. > :13:50.information on travel plans. A union representing rail workers

:13:50. > :13:57.says one in four are under threat across the UK if recommendations

:13:57. > :13:59.and a new report are followed. There are crucial. In many ways,

:13:59. > :14:03.they do other duties other than selling tickets such as giving

:14:03. > :14:07.advice about travel arrangements and the right type of tickets. Many

:14:07. > :14:11.people pay excessive amounts for tickets. They also do other duties

:14:11. > :14:15.on the platform. It is too simplistic in many cases simply to

:14:15. > :14:19.say they are not selling enough tickets. They provide a service to

:14:19. > :14:23.a community. The Association of Train Operating Companies says the

:14:23. > :14:26.industry needs to cut costs and provide better value for money for

:14:26. > :14:30.the taxpayer. They say there has been a fundamental shift in the way

:14:30. > :14:33.people buy tickets over the last five years. The number sold through

:14:34. > :14:37.the internet has more than trebled, with the number of automated

:14:37. > :14:41.tickets almost doubling. The number of passengers buying from station

:14:41. > :14:45.staff has fallen, and now accounts for just over a third of all

:14:45. > :14:49.tickets bought. Passengers are also bracing themselves for an 8 percent

:14:49. > :14:53.increase in fares next year. With the news last week that stern line

:14:53. > :14:56.would be cutting down its high- speed set -- a ferry service

:14:56. > :15:00.between Holyhead and Ireland, rail passengers feel this is another

:15:00. > :15:05.potential jobs blow to the vital trust what -- Transport had locally.

:15:05. > :15:10.Others feel prices are going up and customer-service is dropping. --

:15:10. > :15:14.transport hub. Holyhead is one of 22 stations in Wales including

:15:14. > :15:21.Newtown and Llandaff where the office could be replaced by a

:15:21. > :15:25.machine. It is orders transferring to ticket machines, and they have

:15:25. > :15:28.flexibility because they are the 24 hours a day. But it doesn't help

:15:28. > :15:33.people who are made redundant because of that. You can buy a lot

:15:33. > :15:39.of things online and now, but having somebody face-to-face is a

:15:39. > :15:43.much better idea than having a faceless, automated machine. There

:15:43. > :15:47.is one in Queen Street and this is a queue of 10 people. If you were -

:15:47. > :15:52.- are in a hurry, you won't do it. They are inconvenient, there is no

:15:52. > :15:55.doubt about it. We came from town this way and we always get at

:15:55. > :16:00.tickets from here because you cannot go out of the station

:16:00. > :16:05.without getting a ticket. There is every conductor here either. It is

:16:05. > :16:10.stupid. We are angry because many people say they're people who run

:16:10. > :16:14.the ticket office get good deals. You can purchase them on the day

:16:14. > :16:17.and get the advice. The Department for Transport says it is

:16:17. > :16:22.considering the report's findings and will review the changes to

:16:22. > :16:27.fares or ticketing. Arriva Trains Wales says it has no plans to close

:16:27. > :16:30.any ticket offices. Plans for a 500 million rail

:16:30. > :16:35.scheme linking Wales to Heathrow Airport have been considered by the

:16:35. > :16:38.UK government. A proposed new spur from the Great Western main line

:16:38. > :16:41.would mean passengers would no longer need to travel into London

:16:41. > :16:46.to get to the airport. The Department for Transport says it

:16:46. > :16:51.could halve the journey time to the airport.

:16:51. > :16:55.He is clear with all tonight's sport. -- Clare.

:16:55. > :16:58.Wales are beginning a good week of preparation ahead of their Rugby

:16:58. > :17:02.World Cup opening match on Sunday. Warren Gatland will name his side

:17:02. > :17:05.to face South Africa on Friday and is still weighing up the fitness of

:17:05. > :17:12.Stephen Jones and Ryan Jones. Gareth Lewis reports from

:17:12. > :17:18.Wellington. Dawn has broken on Wales's first

:17:18. > :17:28.venue. It has been quite a welcome in Wellington.

:17:28. > :17:29.

:17:29. > :17:33.To which Wales have responded in style.

:17:33. > :17:39.New Zealand's capital has become a home from home with hundreds of

:17:39. > :17:44.Welsh fans attending just training. You are looking sharp. I didn't

:17:44. > :17:48.realise they were so big. They are good boys and I'm looking forward

:17:48. > :17:53.to the future of Welsh rugby. amazing. We went to see them at the

:17:53. > :17:57.airport as well. It was amazing to see so many Welsh people. Explain

:17:57. > :18:01.the suit. I saw it on the internet and thought, it has got to happen

:18:01. > :18:05.with the World Cup coming! There is mixed injury use, Ryan Jones is one

:18:05. > :18:10.step closer to overcoming his calf problem but Stephen Jones knows it

:18:10. > :18:14.is probably a step too far for his calf to recover in time to face the

:18:14. > :18:17.Springboks, and a decision is expected in next few days. Wales's

:18:17. > :18:22.warm-up went well, but the World Cup record is not so encouraging.

:18:22. > :18:25.Wales have only made it out of the poor in three of the previous six

:18:25. > :18:31.tournaments, and the oldest player is determined they will be no

:18:31. > :18:35.repeat of 2007 when they lost in the final pool game to Fiji. Were

:18:35. > :18:40.don't want that happening again. That was one of the worst days of

:18:40. > :18:47.my rugby career, to be honest. With the World Cup, one mistake and you

:18:47. > :18:51.can be out. We are playing South Africa first, and the last three

:18:51. > :18:54.times we have paid then we have come very close. We are fed up of

:18:54. > :18:59.coming close, though, and hopefully this is the stage to beat them for

:18:59. > :19:05.once. As preparations intensified, Wales are confident that this time

:19:05. > :19:10.round, there is a harder edge. group, now, with winning, they

:19:10. > :19:14.believe in themselves. The coaches telling them they will win, and you

:19:14. > :19:18.start to believe it. So far it has all been very friendly and relaxed

:19:18. > :19:21.in this rugby-mad city, but tomorrow the switch will flick and

:19:21. > :19:24.Wales will start to concentrate exclusively on the daunting task in

:19:24. > :19:28.hand: Meeting reigning world champion South Africa in their

:19:28. > :19:34.opening pool game. Win that and they put themselves in a great

:19:35. > :19:38.position to win a horribly difficult Paul. -- difficult Paul.

:19:38. > :19:42.They are all catching up on sleep in New Zealand but I spoke to

:19:42. > :19:47.Gareth earlier and asked him what the latest was on the injuries, and

:19:47. > :19:52.if Gethin Jenkins was any closer to making a return. I think Gethin

:19:52. > :19:57.Jenkins is almost certainly out. They are delaying the inevitable

:19:57. > :20:01.with Gethin, I'm afraid. Ryan Jones and Stephen Jones, Ryan Jones is up

:20:01. > :20:06.and running again despite his calf injury. I don't think the news is

:20:06. > :20:10.so good on Stephen Jones. It is all cards, his recovery from his calf

:20:10. > :20:15.injury is very slow indeed. Stephen Jones, it may be only a matter of

:20:15. > :20:18.time until he is ruled out. A big, physical player and no guarantee of

:20:18. > :20:23.a start again sat have a go. It is style of play Wales would have

:20:23. > :20:28.loved to have their -- at their disposal. This week, key to their

:20:28. > :20:31.preparation, you have been following the squad since they

:20:31. > :20:34.arrived. What is the mood like in camp, are they happy? We saw

:20:34. > :20:38.pictures yesterday when they met the Welsh fans. They were bowled

:20:38. > :20:43.over by how many people turned up, not just ex pats but travelling

:20:43. > :20:48.fans as well. We have seen the players out and about this evening

:20:48. > :20:51.having a coffee and enjoying taking in the surroundings. It is a

:22:48. > :22:52.says Wales will be a threat. Tomorrow will be a tough game

:24:21. > :24:29.arrived here. You will say there is more rain on

:24:29. > :24:33.the way. I am going to! Down under in New Zealand there is

:24:33. > :24:36.high pressure at the moment, but in Wales it is a different story. A

:24:36. > :24:40.roller-coaster ride this week, low- pressure bringing spells of wet and

:24:40. > :24:45.windy weather in from the Atlantic. That goes for tonight. The wind

:24:45. > :24:51.could be strong enough to bring down some branches and blow over

:24:51. > :24:54.your pin. Tonight, a dose of wet and windy weather, heaviest on the

:25:14. > :25:19.reason for the disturbed area is this low pressure pushing a cold

:25:19. > :25:24.from south-east across Britain. Tomorrow morning, wet and windy

:25:24. > :25:27.first thing for much of Palace and the South. Strong wind as well and

:25:27. > :25:32.unpleasant on the roads. Further west the rain should have cleared

:25:32. > :25:36.from Pembrokeshire and Kerrigan and the north-west dryer, and the north

:26:15. > :26:19.times. Showers on Wednesday and more rain at times by the look of

:26:19. > :26:24.it on Thursday and Friday. Not the best weather this week but a hint

:26:24. > :26:31.of high pressure and dry weather later in the month. Our picture
