:00:11. > :00:14.Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines: for Wales to succeed now,
:00:14. > :00:17.Plaid Cymru has to be in the government of Wales.
:00:17. > :00:27.A defiant message from Plaid's outgoing leader as the party looks
:00:27. > :00:38.
:00:38. > :00:47.to find direction after May's The Rugby World Cup begins and fans
:00:47. > :00:50.in New Zealand are ready for Wales first game on Sunday.
:00:50. > :00:57.Wales have named their side to face South Africa but it could be the
:00:57. > :01:01.end of the tournament already for Ryan Jones. We will have the latest.
:01:01. > :01:05.I am at the rugby club where Wales captain Sam Warburton began his
:01:05. > :01:08.career. I will be talking to his proud father.
:01:08. > :01:11.And ready to go back to the wild after becoming stranded, but
:01:11. > :01:18.conflicting views over where hundreds of sea birds should be
:01:18. > :01:21.Ieuan Wyn Jones in his last conference speech as Plaid Cymru
:01:21. > :01:25.leader has told his party that it's their role and duty to lead Wales
:01:25. > :01:28.in Government. He said that because Plaid had lost power in May's
:01:28. > :01:32.Assembly elections, Wales had been held back. The conference has been
:01:32. > :01:33.dominated by debates about the party's future. From Llandudno,
:01:33. > :01:36.here's our Political Editor, Betsan Powys
:01:36. > :01:46.An attempt to stop Welsh and Scottish MPs amending England-only

:02:02. > :02:07.legislation in Westminster has Today was all about one man and one
:02:07. > :02:13.farewell speech. In politics you need a thick skin
:02:13. > :02:16.to stay at the top. This man has lasted longer than many. In the
:02:16. > :02:26.past, Ieuan Wyn Jones has shied away from the limelight before a
:02:26. > :02:32.big speech but not this morning. A man at ease with himself before his
:02:32. > :02:36.swansong. I use that to be making your last conference speech? Not at
:02:36. > :02:40.all. It is time to hang up the bridge now and has the
:02:40. > :02:44.responsibility to a new leader. 11 years is long enough.
:02:44. > :02:48.Please give a warm welcome to the leader of Plaid Cymru, Ieuan Wyn
:02:48. > :02:52.Jones. Party members showed their
:02:52. > :02:57.appreciation for a leader who took this party to power and, in
:02:57. > :03:02.government, has delivered more power for Wales.
:03:02. > :03:08.I have no hesitation in saying Wales had the best government since
:03:08. > :03:13.1999. We did good things. I will tell you something, the mistake we
:03:14. > :03:18.made in 2011 was not telling people what we did in government.
:03:18. > :03:21.Plaid Cymru's disappointing Assembly election meant Wales had
:03:21. > :03:27.fallen behind under Labour in contrast to what has happened in
:03:27. > :03:34.Scotland. Scotland, powering ahead, a nation
:03:34. > :03:39.on the march. The SNP government setting the pace. Wales, lagging
:03:39. > :03:44.behind with no ambition, in reverse gear, going nowhere under a Labour
:03:44. > :03:49.government. He said Plaid Cymru must strive to
:03:49. > :03:54.lead Wales. Then came the personal touch.
:03:54. > :03:58.My time as a leader is coming to an end. Candidates to become the next
:03:58. > :04:04.leader are beginning to declare themselves. Any more today, I
:04:04. > :04:09.wonder? It has been a great honour to have been president and party
:04:10. > :04:13.leader for the past 11 years. It is the end of an Era in
:04:13. > :04:17.Llandudno and when the new leader is elected in March, it will be the
:04:17. > :04:24.start of a new chapter for Plaid Cymru. How are those eyeing up the
:04:25. > :04:28.top job? Electability has got to be the key thing and the balance that
:04:28. > :04:33.has got to be struck is between those people who see political
:04:33. > :04:38.parties as activist of -- in areas of campaigning and those of us who
:04:38. > :04:43.see politics as a duty to represent people and make a change in a
:04:43. > :04:48.democratic way. Any party needs to look at itself, refresh its message,
:04:48. > :04:54.refresh its activity, in order to generate greater support. Plaid
:04:54. > :04:58.Cymru certainly needs to do that. But that challenge will not be his.
:04:58. > :05:01.Ieuan Wyn Jones will soon have more time on his hands to get to grips
:05:01. > :05:07.with other priorities. The challenge for his party is to
:05:07. > :05:13.figure out where it goes next. We heard some of Ieuan Wyn Jones's
:05:13. > :05:17.speech. What message did he have for a future leader? He had quite a
:05:17. > :05:21.few messages but it boils down to this, he was saying that the number
:05:21. > :05:25.one name has got to be to get Plaid Cymru back into government in
:05:25. > :05:30.Cardiff Bay. To do that, don't retreat to your heartlands, broaden
:05:30. > :05:35.the appeal, and keep remembering that you are a constitutional
:05:35. > :05:40.political party and not, as he put it in his speech this afternoon, a
:05:40. > :05:46.religious sect and. What he now knows, having delivered that
:05:46. > :05:51.message, he has got to sit back and let go. Have a party delegates been
:05:51. > :05:57.taking any decisions today? They have been avoiding some and taking
:05:57. > :06:02.others. One decision they were asked, to support a motion over the
:06:02. > :06:06.future of S4C, that they will agree to withhold their licence fees. We
:06:06. > :06:16.heard that debate again. He said this was no place for a proper
:06:16. > :06:23.
:06:23. > :06:28.party. But devotion was carried almost unanimously. -- the motion.
:06:28. > :06:38.There are plenty of debates to come. If you want to hear some of them

:07:39. > :07:43.The Rugby World Cup is underway in New Zealand. Welsh fans here will
:07:43. > :07:47.be watching Wales take on South Africa on Sunday morning. Claire is
:07:47. > :07:53.at Rhiwbina Rugby Club for us tonight?
:07:53. > :07:55.Good evening. Every rugby star has to start somewhere and this is club
:07:55. > :08:01.that can boast developing the skills of Wales captain Sam
:08:01. > :08:06.Warburton. A former youth player here at Rhiwbina, we'll be finding
:08:06. > :08:10.out more about his time with the Squirrels in just a moment. First,
:08:10. > :08:14.the Rugby World Cup got underway in a blaze of glory this morning, but
:08:14. > :08:17.Wales are fully focused on Sunday's match with South Africa. Today,
:08:17. > :08:22.Warren Gatland explained his reasoning for playing James Hook at
:08:22. > :08:28.full-back. A little earlier, we caught up with Gareth Lewis in
:08:28. > :08:31.Wellington. Wales and South Africa both named
:08:31. > :08:36.their side today but they have both have two days until the match gets
:08:36. > :08:40.under way. New Zealand has waited 24 years to host this tournament
:08:40. > :08:44.again and they are making up for lost time. The party well under way
:08:44. > :08:49.behind us in Wellington and it kicked off in spectacular fashion
:08:49. > :08:53.earlier in Auckland. This was New Zealand's moment to ask in the
:08:53. > :08:57.spotlight. New Zealand legend Jonah Lomu took centre stage at the
:08:57. > :09:01.opening ceremony. Collective fingers were crossed that the
:09:01. > :09:05.fireworks would be a taste of things to come. They were, at least
:09:05. > :09:10.initially, in the opening match as New Zealand started like a rocket.
:09:10. > :09:17.But they failed to sparkle in the second half. Tonga with a strong
:09:17. > :09:22.finish. Wales play Samoa and Fiji in their pool. In Wellington, the
:09:22. > :09:26.talking is almost over. And not for the first time, that talk has
:09:26. > :09:31.revolved around James Hook. He starts at full-back with Rhys
:09:31. > :09:35.Priestland at outside-half. We have been really impressed with Rhys
:09:35. > :09:45.Priestland and we felt that combination with James at 15, the
:09:45. > :09:51.confidence of his attacking play, it gives us that opportunity. James
:09:51. > :09:56.will continue to kick as well. Upfront, Luke Charteris is the
:09:56. > :10:01.notable inclusion at second row. Toby Faletau has been preferred to
:10:02. > :10:05.Andy Powell. Sam Warburton leads the side, not only being the
:10:05. > :10:11.youngest of Wales's World Cup captain, but also dealing with his
:10:11. > :10:17.at posing opposite number. It is going to be an interesting one. I
:10:17. > :10:21.have not played against him yet a. It is a battle I am looking forward
:10:21. > :10:27.to it. He is probably one of the better players in the world at the
:10:27. > :10:31.break down. For a former captain, the World Cup may be over before it
:10:31. > :10:35.has begun. Ryan Jones is at least two weeks away from shaking off a
:10:35. > :10:40.calf injury. Wales will decide whether to fly at a replacement
:10:40. > :10:45.after the weekend. South Africa, the defending champions, are a near
:10:45. > :10:53.full strength. This man needs one more try to become the highest
:10:53. > :10:59.South African try scorer of all time. Fichte Matfield devise a
:10:59. > :11:05.hamstring problem to start. South Africa are formidable in size. But
:11:05. > :11:10.they are not underestimating Wales. The lovely part of international
:11:10. > :11:15.rugby, you don't find weaknesses very easy enough to hear one
:11:15. > :11:19.countries. We would be stupid if we try and do that. What we tend to do,
:11:19. > :11:23.and I think we were very successful over the four years in doing so, is
:11:23. > :11:27.to concentrate on what we want to do and try to do it as good as we
:11:27. > :11:32.can., it will be a really tough task but most of the locals behind
:11:32. > :11:36.us have assured us they will be cheering for Wales on Sunday. A win
:11:36. > :11:42.for Wales and it will throw not only their chances but the whole
:11:42. > :11:47.World Cup wide open. As I mentioned, this is where Wales
:11:47. > :11:51.captain Sam Warburton began his career. I am joined by his dad,
:11:51. > :11:57.Jeremy Warburton, and a man who refereed him, Dave Bodilly. Was he
:11:57. > :12:01.always good? You could see from an early age that he could turn into
:12:01. > :12:07.something very special. His attitude and ability on the pitch
:12:07. > :12:12.was excellent. He really was a footballer because rugby is not
:12:12. > :12:16.huge in your family. I was a big football fan and Sam was the same
:12:16. > :12:20.along with his brother Ben. They put had trials for Cardiff City
:12:20. > :12:26.when they were 14. They had to choose and they both chose rugby,
:12:26. > :12:31.thankfully for Wales. And it was his headmaster who got involved?
:12:31. > :12:36.told him he was special at 12 years old. He persuaded me to make some
:12:36. > :12:42.turn up and the rest is history. Looking forward to the World Cup,
:12:42. > :12:45.will he relish this opportunity of leading Wales? I think he will. His
:12:45. > :12:50.attitude is a first class and I think it is made for him. He is
:12:50. > :12:55.going to go from strength to strength. I think you will do the
:12:55. > :13:04.whole nation proud. He is a world- class player. I know what is your
:13:04. > :13:08.birthday today. Thank you for coming. 37! I know you have spoken
:13:08. > :13:14.to Sam today. How much is he relishing getting on that pitch?
:13:14. > :13:21.Himself and the whole Wales team can't wait for Sunday evening. They
:13:21. > :13:27.are desperate to get out there and do as well as they can. What will
:13:27. > :13:31.you say to him before the game? Just to do what he always does,
:13:31. > :13:36.tried his hardest. Hopefully he will do well again and the rest of
:13:36. > :13:42.the team as well. Is it hard to watch him? It is hard because my
:13:42. > :13:48.wife worries about him getting injured. It is a tough game but it
:13:48. > :13:56.is fantastic to watch. How far can Wales go? It all depends on Sunday.
:13:56. > :14:00.If we can beat South Africa, which Let me just bring you some good
:14:00. > :14:04.news about Paralympic cyclist Simon Richardson. After more than three
:14:04. > :14:07.weeks in hospital, he's been able to go home this afternoon. Here's a
:14:07. > :14:09.picture of him just before he left the ward. You'll remember the
:14:09. > :14:12.double gold medallist was knocked off his bike near Bridgend and
:14:12. > :14:18.suffered multiple injuries. Well doctors say he has responded really
:14:18. > :14:21.well to treatment. I'll be back with more on the rest
:14:21. > :14:28.of the day's sport a little later including, a final game for the
:14:28. > :14:38.Crusaders fans as they bow out of the Super League. See you a little
:14:38. > :14:38.
:14:38. > :14:41.More now on the dramatic rescue of seabirds in Pembrokeshire this week.
:14:41. > :14:45.The Manx Shearwaters had been blown off course as they started their
:14:45. > :14:48.winter migration. The RSPCA are looking after some of them in
:14:48. > :14:52.Somerset, but there are strong feelings in Pembrokeshire the birds
:14:52. > :14:55.should be returned to Wales to be released. Within the last hour
:14:55. > :15:05.we've been sent pictures of how some of the stranded birds have
:15:05. > :15:11.
:15:11. > :15:17.started their migration from a This afternoon's crossing from fish
:15:17. > :15:24.Kent. Enthusiasts had been caring for some Manx Shearwater. The birds
:15:24. > :15:29.were being released from a ferry because people thought that would
:15:29. > :15:37.give them a better opportunity to emigrate towards Argentina. The
:15:37. > :15:43.gusty weather affecting West Wales will delay but it should not hamper
:15:43. > :15:50.the birds too much. They had been sitting in the burrow on their own
:15:50. > :15:54.as young birds. They practise flying and they lose weight. They
:15:54. > :16:03.generally lose weight and exercise and practice. In this case, they
:16:03. > :16:13.came out and were blown up into the air and have lost their way before
:16:13. > :16:14.
:16:14. > :16:18.they could get out to sea. Usually, birds are the Prix introduced to
:16:18. > :16:28.the wild in small batches. But now a question has arisen about where
:16:28. > :16:35.best to go. While admiring the fast response of the RSPCA, there are
:16:35. > :16:39.concerns. If we can get them off the coast over to the Irish side
:16:39. > :16:47.where there are large flocks feeding, we could get them joined
:16:47. > :16:53.up with them and they would be in calmer conditions. They would be
:16:53. > :16:58.ready to migrate them. I do not see the English side of the Bristol
:16:58. > :17:03.Channel as a good place to release them. The RSPCA intend to release
:17:03. > :17:12.some of the birds tonight in a north Devon and insist without it
:17:12. > :17:17.scare the birds would have died. knew we had to do something. We put
:17:17. > :17:26.them in cages and fed and cleaned them. With waterproof them. They
:17:27. > :17:33.are now ready to be released. of the Manx Shearwater will be
:17:34. > :17:37.released into the wild this evening. 60 other birds were released by
:17:37. > :17:41.Pembrokeshire volunteers today. Over the past four years, we've
:17:41. > :17:43.brought you the story of one group's fight to stop a high school
:17:43. > :17:46.being built on their local park. The campaigners have finally had
:17:46. > :17:51.the good news they've been waiting for as Cardiff Council have shelved
:17:51. > :17:55.plans to develop Rumney Recreation ground. Don Taylor and Mel Plenty's
:17:55. > :17:57.hard work has finally paid off. Along with a group of supporters,
:17:57. > :18:07.they've waged a hard fought campaign against Cardiff Council's
:18:07. > :18:12.
:18:12. > :18:18.plans to build a secondary school here on Rumney Rec. It has been
:18:18. > :18:24.very difficult for my wife and myself. Mounds of paperwork in the
:18:24. > :18:30.House. Calls at any time of the day or night. It has been hard but it
:18:30. > :18:33.has been worth it. It's been four years of highs and lows. At a local
:18:33. > :18:36.referendum two years ago, 94% of voters were in favour of keeping
:18:36. > :18:39.the park. But a year later, a public inquiry ruled against their
:18:39. > :18:42.bid to get the ground Village Green Status which would have protected
:18:42. > :18:45.the site from further development. Now, unexpectedly, the authority
:18:45. > :18:48.say a cut in Welsh Government funding for other school projects
:18:48. > :18:58.in the city means they've had to re-examine their plans, which has
:18:58. > :18:58.
:18:58. > :19:08.already cost them half a million pounds. We are having to think
:19:08. > :19:14.again about many of our plans now. We will be considering this on a
:19:14. > :19:19.phased basis. That will give us an opportunity in a to look for a
:19:19. > :19:22.better site that will be better welcomed by the community. That
:19:22. > :19:24.site will be here at Rumney High. The Welsh Government say it is
:19:25. > :19:27.disappointed the plans are being reconsidered especially as its
:19:28. > :19:31.funding was never agreed with the authority. But the fight for the
:19:31. > :19:33.rec isn't quite over yet, the group now say they want to reapply for
:19:34. > :19:36.village green status to prevent any future development and long-running
:19:36. > :19:40.campaigns. Let's return to Claire now at
:19:40. > :19:45.Rhiwbina Rugby Club for the rest of the day's sports news.
:19:46. > :19:49.Thanks Lucy. Welcome back. Let's turn to football now and after the
:19:49. > :19:52.international break, it's back to club football this weekend. Swansea
:19:53. > :20:02.City return to London for the first time since their play-off victory
:20:03. > :20:03.
:20:04. > :20:08.in May. They're up against Arsenal It has been a respectable start for
:20:08. > :20:12.Swansea City in the premier league. The only thing that is missing so
:20:12. > :20:18.far he is a goal. They hope that the change tomorrow. It is likely
:20:18. > :20:25.to be one of their toughest matches of the season. Arsenal were
:20:25. > :20:35.humiliated in their last match against Manchester United. Brendan
:20:35. > :20:40.Rodgers is worried his team may face a backlash. They have new
:20:40. > :20:45.players who will want to make a good start. The task will be very
:20:45. > :20:52.difficult for us. In the championship, Cardiff City are at
:20:52. > :20:59.home to Doncaster. Robert Earnshaw's miss against England
:20:59. > :21:02.this week grab the headlines. was disappointment. Those are the
:21:02. > :21:07.types of people who end up successful. He has been through
:21:07. > :21:14.periods where he has missed chances, but he has confidence in his own
:21:14. > :21:17.ability. Wrexham are playing away tomorrow while Newport County
:21:17. > :21:20.travel to Mansfield. It's a big day for Crusaders fans
:21:21. > :21:24.who are heading to Wigan for their club's final Super League game. The
:21:24. > :21:27.club should find out next week if they'll be allowed to play in the
:21:27. > :21:35.Co-operative Conference. A group of supporters and team sponsors have
:21:35. > :21:38.submitted their business plan to the Rugby Football League. They
:21:38. > :21:46.have said to us that we need to provide evidence that we will have
:21:46. > :21:51.fans in the ground next year. We have opened up season tickets for -
:21:51. > :21:54.- to be made available. We have had a few hundred people coming forward
:21:55. > :22:00.already. That is a phenomenal response.
:22:00. > :22:03.Cricket. Mark Wallace has been appointed captain of Glamorgan. The
:22:03. > :22:05.wicketkeeper, who's just signed a new three year contract, will
:22:05. > :22:10.replace Alviro Petersen, who's returning to South Africa at the
:22:10. > :22:20.end of the season. On the field, their County Championship match
:22:20. > :22:28.
:22:28. > :22:31.with Middlesex finally got underway Many bars and rugby clubs up and
