:00:04. > :00:06.Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines:

:00:06. > :00:16.Firefighter numbers in Llanelli could be more than halved.

:00:16. > :00:17.

:00:17. > :00:21.Protesters say the proposals put lives at risk. We could be out all

:00:21. > :00:23.day fighting fires and then be out again at night.

:00:24. > :00:26.Our other headlines: Waste you cannot recycle. Now the

:00:26. > :00:31.controversial American company that wanted to build an incinerator in

:00:31. > :00:35.Merthyr withdraws. A month's rain in a day. The

:00:35. > :00:39.Environment Agency says Pembrokeshire has been hardest hit.

:00:39. > :00:44.Bring back the ferry. How Anglesey hopes to capitalise on its coast to

:00:44. > :00:46.draw tourists. In tonight's sport:

:00:46. > :00:51.As the players are reunited with their loved ones, attention turns

:00:51. > :00:57.to Warren Gatland's back room staff. Rob Howley says he wants to stay

:00:58. > :01:07.with Wales. Swansea squander all three points,

:01:08. > :01:11.

:01:11. > :01:21.3,000 dresses, 400 hats and 400 pairs of shoes. How's that for one

:01:21. > :01:32.

:01:32. > :01:35.Good evening. Lives could be put at risk if the number of firefighters

:01:35. > :01:38.in Llanelli are more than halved. Campaigners say the decision by Mid

:01:38. > :01:44.and West Wales Fire Authority to change the crewing system won't

:01:44. > :01:54.work. One option is to cut the number of staff from 28 to 13, but

:01:54. > :02:02.

:02:02. > :02:06.bosses insist no decisions have yet A call-out for Llanelli Fire

:02:06. > :02:13.Station this morning. One of 900 they average each year. It turned

:02:13. > :02:19.out to be a kitchen fire, swiftly dealt with. Across town, protesters

:02:19. > :02:25.set off on their own rescue mission to plead Against cuts. It is the

:02:25. > :02:31.biggest town in Carmarthenshire. Once again, we seem to be hitting a

:02:31. > :02:35.brick wall. Everything is taken away from us. There are currently

:02:35. > :02:40.28 full-time firefighters in Llanelli with only five on duty at

:02:40. > :02:46.the time. The fire a authority says this is not delivering value for

:02:46. > :02:51.money. One option be considered is cutting the number of firefighters

:02:51. > :02:56.to 13 and relying on those left to work flexible hours. That has been

:02:56. > :03:00.met with anger from most protesters. This man is a full-time fire

:03:00. > :03:06.fighter, he is worried flexible hours will mean longer hours for

:03:06. > :03:11.him. It is ridiculous and his day and age to expect that from any man.

:03:11. > :03:17.We could be out all day on fires and then they would expected to

:03:17. > :03:21.attend fires at night. We are not superhuman. Inside the meeting, the

:03:21. > :03:25.fire chiefs said they had not decided how the new system would

:03:25. > :03:31.work only they would want it to be more efficient and services would

:03:31. > :03:37.not be affected. We have eight members of staff to ensure five are

:03:37. > :03:44.available for the fire engine. There is a responsibility on the

:03:44. > :03:49.fire authority to explore areas where it can reduce costs and not

:03:49. > :03:53.affect service delivery. It is incidents like this that test our

:03:53. > :03:58.fire service. A blaze at the disused car tyre factory in Swansea

:03:58. > :04:03.burned over a week. Llanelli firefighters helped to put it out.

:04:03. > :04:08.Campaigners argue that if overall staff numbers are reduced, Llanelli

:04:08. > :04:16.would-be be poor relation. They have a responsibility to the public

:04:17. > :04:21.they are not -- but they were not put lives at danger. Cuts in

:04:22. > :04:27.funding means the fire a authorities in North and South

:04:27. > :04:32.Wales face the same dilemma. Do they make redundancies or save

:04:32. > :04:35.money by having less people work more flexible hours.

:04:35. > :04:38.Rubbish you can't recycle ends up here in a landfill site. Plans for

:04:38. > :04:40.a waste incinerator on the outskirts of Merthyr Tydfil which

:04:40. > :04:44.would have burned rubbish to produce electricity, have been

:04:44. > :04:47.scrapped. People living nearby didn't want it and now Covanta, the

:04:47. > :04:57.American company behind the plan, says the project has become

:04:57. > :05:01.

:05:01. > :05:07.With ever increasing targets for reducing rubbish that goes to

:05:07. > :05:17.landfill, the consortium of five local authorities looking for a

:05:17. > :05:25.cost-effective method had been considering a plan for an

:05:25. > :05:32.incinerator. The American company claimed it was a cost-effective

:05:32. > :05:41.solution. But they say they and now pulling out because it is not

:05:41. > :05:45.viable. The company say they would now concentrate on other UK

:05:45. > :05:53.projects and say this is purely a strategic decision and has nothing

:05:53. > :05:57.to do with local opposition to the incinerator. But that local

:05:57. > :06:03.opposition disagree. They were furious at plans to site an

:06:03. > :06:10.incinerator less than one mile from their homes. Today's decision is a

:06:10. > :06:16.victory for commonsense, they say. It is unexpected. We were gearing

:06:16. > :06:21.up for another big battle in the hearings that were coming up over

:06:21. > :06:29.the next few weeks. It was the wrong development for this area. We

:06:29. > :06:36.are already blighted with open cast. Environmental groups also would

:06:36. > :06:41.come the announcement. It would have been on common ground above

:06:41. > :06:50.the town. It would have put off other cream businesses from

:06:51. > :06:52.flourishing in the area. A couple of companies remain in the project.

:06:52. > :06:55.Torrential rain has hit Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and

:06:55. > :06:57.Swansea which are now all at risk of flash flooding tonight. That's

:06:58. > :07:00.the warning from the Environment Agency. Pembrokeshire's been the

:07:00. > :07:02.worst affected. Treffgarne, Wolfscastle and Neyland have all

:07:02. > :07:05.seen heavy downpours with the Met Office predicting almost half a

:07:05. > :07:15.month's rain in 24 hours. Kate Morgan is at the Environment Agency

:07:15. > :07:20.

:07:20. > :07:27.Good evening. This is the Environment Agency headquarters in

:07:27. > :07:32.Cardiff. They have been busy today. The big band of rain has covered

:07:32. > :07:41.Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Swansea. It is just continuing this

:07:41. > :07:47.evening. There has been an update on the warnings tonight. We have

:07:47. > :07:53.received a warning for the Pembrokeshire area. It has taken a

:07:53. > :08:02.pasting today. Lots of flooding of the roads and gardens and

:08:02. > :08:08.properties. Keep an eye out. It is up to 100 mm of rain, that is about

:08:08. > :08:13.a month's rainfall. What can people do? People in those areas need to

:08:13. > :08:18.be careful. It is not a good idea to travel through floodwater. You

:08:18. > :08:24.cannot tell what is underneath. Manholes may have disappeared and

:08:24. > :08:33.people can become stuck. The advice from us is to keep an eye out on

:08:33. > :08:38.the weather. Phone hour flood line number for more advice. You'll get

:08:38. > :08:44.up-to-date information and advice. Is it going to clear? The forecast

:08:44. > :08:50.looks like it will Clear later on tonight. There is a second band of

:08:50. > :08:57.rain coming in later. But the good news is the forecast tomorrow looks

:08:57. > :09:00.clearer. IQ ever so much. That is the good news. Be careful that it

:09:00. > :09:03.should clear later on tonight. Derek will have the latest

:09:03. > :09:06.information at the end of the programme.

:09:06. > :09:10.The BBC has announced it will give S4C more than 70 million a year to

:09:10. > :09:14.make programmes from now until 2017. In two years time, the BBC will

:09:14. > :09:20.take over the bulk of funding for S4C from the UK Government. Let's

:09:20. > :09:28.talk to our reporter Rhodri Lewis. Rhodri, remind us of the deal that

:09:28. > :09:31.was struck here? Well, the UK Government used to give S4C around

:09:31. > :09:34.100 million a year to make programmes. Then last year it said

:09:34. > :09:37.the budget would be cut by a quarter, and that the BBC would

:09:37. > :09:43.finance most of the channel from 2013. In 2013 and 2014, the BBC

:09:43. > :09:50.plans to give just over 76 million. Today it's been announced that

:09:50. > :10:00.those figures will go down slightly to around 75 million. Here's what

:10:00. > :10:00.

:10:00. > :10:05.the BBC Trustee for Wales had to This is a good deal which will get

:10:05. > :10:11.Welsh language content on television. It will secure a

:10:11. > :10:18.creative flourishing future for S4C despite the terrible difficulties

:10:18. > :10:24.that it has gone through. It sounds like a lot of money but that is not

:10:24. > :10:32.all the income? The BBC asked to provide 10 hours a week for as the

:10:32. > :10:37.sea including the news and soap opera. S4C said the announcement

:10:37. > :10:40.marks an important new contribution to the ongoing discussions. The BBC

:10:40. > :10:43.said it is a good settlement in a difficult climate.

:10:43. > :10:45.Two men have appeared in court, charged with the murder of a

:10:45. > :10:48.takeaway delivery driver in Denbighshire. Gabor Sarkozi died

:10:48. > :10:51.after being found in Meliden near Prestatyn almost a week ago. Gary

:10:51. > :10:56.Bland and James Siree, who are both from Rhyl, were remanded in custody

:10:56. > :10:58.and will appear in court again tomorrow.

:10:58. > :11:03.The number of people in Wales applying for university places fell

:11:03. > :11:06.by 8% this year. That's one of the smallest drops across the UK.

:11:06. > :11:11.Admissions service UCAS said there were just over 2,000 applicants

:11:11. > :11:15.from Wales, that's down on last year. It comes as tuition fees

:11:15. > :11:23.around the UK are set to rise from next year, although students from

:11:23. > :11:26.Wales will have the increases paid Would you like a referendum on

:11:26. > :11:29.Britain's membership of the European Union? It's something that

:11:29. > :11:34.Welsh MPs will be debating tonight, with voting due to take place at

:11:34. > :11:39.around 10 o'clock. It's not clear yet whether any of them will defy

:11:39. > :11:41.the Government and back the motion. Our political reporter Aled ap

:11:41. > :11:51.Dafydd has been speaking to one Welsh Conservative MP, Jonathan

:11:51. > :11:53.

:11:53. > :11:58.Evans. Key issue of Europe has been a divisive one for the Conservative

:11:58. > :12:02.Party. I am joined by Jonathan Evans, the Conservative Member of

:12:02. > :12:06.Parliament for Cardiff North and also a former member of the

:12:06. > :12:11.European Parliament. Au for opera against this motion could work I'll

:12:11. > :12:14.be voting against his motion. not believe this is an issue of

:12:14. > :12:22.importance to our electors at this moment in time. They are worried

:12:22. > :12:28.about their jobs and government cuts and the situation of getting

:12:28. > :12:33.our economy back on track. This would be undermined if we left the

:12:33. > :12:39.European Union. What are the people in your constituency tell you about

:12:39. > :12:45.this? I do not weigh things on the basis of who is writing to me most.

:12:45. > :12:53.For those people, this may be the most important political issue. I

:12:53. > :12:58.respect them but I disagree with their view. David Cameron and Ed

:12:58. > :13:03.Miliband say the relationship between Britain and the European

:13:03. > :13:07.Union must be looked at again. is important that we take the

:13:07. > :13:13.opportunity to look at some of the areas where we have given away

:13:13. > :13:18.powers. Once we get agreement from the European Union, that concept

:13:18. > :13:23.may be put to the people in a referendum. This vote today is

:13:23. > :13:33.premature. How many of your Welsh Conservatives colleagues will vote

:13:33. > :13:37.in favour of this motion? Who can say. I hope it is not more than one.

:13:37. > :13:40.The result of that vote is expected some time after 10 o'clock this

:13:40. > :13:44.evening. Much more to come before 7 o'clock.

:13:44. > :13:48.The view from the saddle. This is what the world looks like for our

:13:48. > :13:58.newest mountain bike world champion. Not bad for one wardrobe: 3,000

:13:58. > :14:00.

:14:00. > :14:04.dresses, 400 hats and 400 pairs of Ferries could carry passengers

:14:04. > :14:08.across the Menai Strait for the first time in 35 years, if plans go

:14:09. > :14:15.ahead to develop marine tourism on Anglesey. Residents are being asked

:14:15. > :14:19.for their views on a 4 million scheme. It aims to create jobs and

:14:19. > :14:23.boost the island's economy, by promoting its natural beauty. A new

:14:23. > :14:27.diving site could also be created at Trearddur Bay.

:14:27. > :14:34.Water. Anglesey is surrounded by it but may not be using it to its full

:14:34. > :14:36.potential according to those behind the redevelopment plans. The Menai

:14:36. > :14:39.and Britannia bridges gradually killed off the ferry services

:14:39. > :14:42.taking passengers to and from the mainland with the last sailing in

:14:42. > :14:50.1976, but those who still offer pleasure cruises think its time to

:14:50. > :14:54.bring back a regular shuttle. been operating here for six years

:14:54. > :15:00.now. I do not get bored of going up-and-down biscuit of water. It is

:15:00. > :15:04.stunning. Because of the way it is geographically place, we can

:15:04. > :15:11.operate nine days out of 10 as well. It is fit -- it's very location

:15:11. > :15:15.means it's good for the tourists and potentially with the right

:15:15. > :15:19.infrastructure on the shoreline, it could be good for the community.

:15:19. > :15:22.But it's not just what's above the water that will appeal to visitors.

:15:22. > :15:28.With North Wales already offering a variety of dive sites, the creation

:15:28. > :15:36.of an artificial reef in Trearddur Bay is also under discussion.

:15:36. > :15:46.happening at a couple of locations around Britain. It has been noted

:15:46. > :15:48.as a major economic post. It is very much a concept at this stage.

:15:48. > :15:53.Over the next few days local businesses and residents will get

:15:53. > :15:58.the chance to hear the plans and offer their views. If there's an

:15:58. > :16:02.appetite for the changes it's hoped private firms would invest further.

:16:02. > :16:07.The trick will be persuading newcomers on foot or on ferry or in

:16:07. > :16:13.flippers that they should be making the most of the coast.

:16:13. > :16:16.The day's sport now. Claire's here, and warm welcome back for Wales.

:16:16. > :16:19.Yes, after months away, the Welsh team were greeted by hundreds of

:16:19. > :16:22.fans as they arrived home from New Zealand. As the players were

:16:22. > :16:27.reunited with their families, attention is now turning to Warren

:16:27. > :16:31.Gatland's backroom staff and what personnel changes may be made.

:16:31. > :16:35.They had supported them all through the World Cup and had been proud of

:16:35. > :16:39.their efforts. Waiting for the Welsh team to arrive home, hundreds

:16:39. > :16:44.of Welsh fans. A few hours earlier, the team had landed at Heathrow.

:16:44. > :16:49.They had been autographs to sign but after 24 hours of travelling,

:16:49. > :16:54.they were keen to get back home. And as the bus pulled into teenage

:16:54. > :17:03.duo, the music started and the cheering began. Best team

:17:03. > :17:08.headquarters. As the players stepped off the bus, it was time

:17:08. > :17:12.for a hag with Dad! It is amazing to see the people turning up. And

:17:12. > :17:15.the Three tenors singing as well, it is a pretty special. We have

:17:15. > :17:20.laid foundations in New Zealand which can propellers off to a

:17:20. > :17:26.successful couple of years, hopefully. But there is plenty of

:17:26. > :17:30.hard work. Attention is now turning tool what changes they made the to

:17:30. > :17:34.the backroom staff. Warren Gatland is signed up to the next World Cup

:17:34. > :17:39.but defence coach Shaun Edwards is weighing things up. His contract

:17:39. > :17:46.ended as Wales returned and at that coaches Robert Howley says he wants

:17:46. > :17:53.to stay in the national set-up -- attack coach. I want to stay with

:17:53. > :18:00.Wales. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last four years. I had been

:18:00. > :18:03.coaching for eight years. You learn coaching with these players. You

:18:03. > :18:07.while involved in every tournament and campaign, they are getting

:18:07. > :18:11.better and better. I think was rugby is in a good place. Finishing

:18:11. > :18:17.4th in the World Cup was be any many fans' dreams at the start of

:18:17. > :18:22.the tournament. -- beyond. The players will have a chance to repay

:18:22. > :18:25.the fans with a rematch against Australia in December. But for now,

:18:25. > :18:29.it's time to just enjoy being home. Frustration for Swansea City

:18:29. > :18:32.manager Brendan Rodgers over the weekend. He saw his side give away

:18:32. > :18:40.two late goals at Wolves. Meanwhile, Cardiff City head into tomorrow's

:18:40. > :18:44.Carling Cup game with Burnley on a high after scoring five goals.

:18:44. > :18:52.Without a point away from C -- away from the Liberty Stadium all season,

:18:52. > :18:59.Swansea got off to the best possible start. Their first win on

:18:59. > :19:05.the road within grasp. But the players hit back. Two goals in the

:19:05. > :19:08.dying minutes denying Swansea all three points. I thought our

:19:08. > :19:13.performance was fantastic. We deserved the three points. I

:19:13. > :19:20.thought we controlled large parts of the game. But credit to Wolves.

:19:20. > :19:24.They got back into the game. We will learn from this and manage the

:19:24. > :19:29.game towards the end bed and look forward to next week now. It was

:19:29. > :19:39.goals galore at the Cardiff City Stadium. Kenny Miller opened the

:19:39. > :19:47.

:19:47. > :19:52.Five goals for Cardiff City. Barnsley managed to claw back a

:19:52. > :19:55.couple of goals but Cardiff City finished on top. We were playing

:19:55. > :20:00.against a good team today, a team that have not lost many goals in

:20:00. > :20:05.this division. They had been on a good run. We knew that if we did

:20:05. > :20:08.not start well, Barnsley would do what they have done to a lot of

:20:08. > :20:13.teams so far. We were delighted that we started like that and got

:20:13. > :20:20.on the front foot. Andy Merrell says he wants the Wrexham job on a

:20:20. > :20:23.permanent basis. His side remains top of the Blue Square Premier.

:20:23. > :20:27.She's our newest world champion and at the age of 18, Manon Carpenter

:20:27. > :20:29.has a tough decision to make. Go to university now or stay in the

:20:29. > :20:32.saddle and concentrate on next year's World Cup mountain biking

:20:32. > :20:41.series. She's just been crowned UCI Junior World Champion in

:20:41. > :20:44.Switzerland. Rebecca John reports. This is what it looks like mountain

:20:44. > :20:51.biking downhill at speeds of more than 37mph, negotiating rocks,

:20:51. > :20:56.roots and mud. Manon Carpenter is the new junior world champion in

:20:56. > :21:04.the downhill event. She won the title at an event in Switzerland

:21:04. > :21:08.last month and is ranked ninth in the international elite. Last year,

:21:08. > :21:12.the week before the World Championships, I broke my arm.

:21:12. > :21:20.Payne comes with the sport. But the most annoying thing is when you

:21:20. > :21:22.cannot compete and when it makes you miss part of the season. Manon

:21:22. > :21:28.is from Caerphilly and trains here in the Cwmcarn Forest. She's

:21:28. > :21:37.frequently the only girl on the course. It is quite funny when you

:21:37. > :21:40.beat some of them. But yes, it is good. Manon started riding BMX as a

:21:40. > :21:43.girl and now rides for the British team Madison Saracen in downhill

:21:43. > :21:47.mountain biking. Her big dilemma now is whether to turn professional

:21:47. > :21:56.or go to university. She was due to start a degree in Manchester this

:21:56. > :22:02.month. I want to concentrate 100 % on downhill racing for at least one

:22:02. > :22:07.year, maybe go to university next year. May be delayed it further,

:22:07. > :22:10.depending on how my season goes. Manon will compete in South Africa,

:22:10. > :22:13.Canada, the United States and Norway next year. During that time,

:22:13. > :22:17.she'll have to decide between university and the steep and rocky

:22:17. > :22:21.path of the sport she loves. We're looking for nominations for

:22:21. > :22:26.this year's BBC Wales Unsung Hero Award. Do you know someone who goes

:22:26. > :22:31.out of their way, to help others in sport? The person has to be 16

:22:38. > :22:42.Nominations close soon on the 30th 3,000 dresses, 400 hats and 400

:22:42. > :22:44.pairs of shoes. Not my wardrobe unfortunately, but that's the vast

:22:44. > :22:51.collection being divided up because its owners, Ceredigion Museum,

:22:51. > :22:54.can't afford to look after it. The items, some dating back to

:22:54. > :23:00.Victorian times, will now be put on show at different locations around

:23:00. > :23:04.the country. A century of fashion recorded in a

:23:04. > :23:11.single collection. From the Victorian 1880s to the hippy '70s

:23:11. > :23:21.and beyond there's a dress for each decade and for each occasion. There

:23:21. > :23:22.

:23:22. > :23:25.are 17,000 items in total. It is a massive range. I have never seen

:23:25. > :23:30.such a collection that one person has collected by themselves. I am

:23:30. > :23:34.very impressed. That person was Mrs Margaret Evans. She began

:23:34. > :23:36.collecting old items of clothing when she was eight years old. In

:23:36. > :23:40.1971 she opened her first exhibition named Aberystwyth

:23:41. > :23:45.Yesterday. Not only did she love collecting, she wanted to share

:23:45. > :23:51.everything with other people. So she had an exhibition in the old

:23:51. > :23:57.station in Aberystwyth. She would even take over shops, empty shops.

:23:57. > :24:02.She would go and ask the owner, can I placed it -- some of my exhibits

:24:02. > :24:06.in the window? People would come to look at them from all over the

:24:06. > :24:10.place. Margaret died 15 years ago and Ceredigion Museum has looked

:24:10. > :24:13.after her collection ever since. But not for much longer. The

:24:13. > :24:15.council says the collection is too large for it to manage and the

:24:15. > :24:21.museum has received 10,000 to divide the collection. Several

:24:21. > :24:25.hundred items will stay in Aberystwyth. The rest of the

:24:25. > :24:29.collection is going to be used. In museums generally, they are not

:24:29. > :24:32.allowed to be handled but we are allowing these to be handled. They

:24:32. > :24:39.are going out to schools and colleges, all people's homes or

:24:39. > :24:43.reminiscence projects. They are bound to students for research,

:24:43. > :24:48.both creative and historical research. These students from

:24:48. > :24:52.Aberystwyth University can see how that could benefit them. I study

:24:52. > :24:56.history. This is from the 1920s. You get more of a contact with the

:24:56. > :25:02.real-life history. I like the dress. I could wear this on a nice

:25:02. > :25:09.summer's day. The hat is a bit on the old aside for me! I would not

:25:09. > :25:16.be wearing this out any time soon! I could wear that. It is really

:25:16. > :25:21.nice. I am not very keen on the Fox! I really liked the dresses.

:25:21. > :25:31.They are really pretty. The entire hoard has been valued at a pound an

:25:37. > :25:41.I think a rowing boot might come in handy in Pembrokeshire this evening.

:25:41. > :25:48.It has been very wet. Most of the North has stayed dry. This is where

:25:48. > :25:53.most of the rain has been. The rain becoming more widespread

:25:53. > :26:00.in the last few hours. One of the wettest places, Bolton Hill in

:26:00. > :26:04.Haverfordwest. 60 mm of rain. Some rivers and streams are swollen

:26:04. > :26:13.with some flooding. At the moment, there are three flood alerts in

:26:32. > :26:37.much drier in Pembrokeshire. Elsewhere, a mixture of cloud and a

:26:43. > :26:48.mild. A few scattered showers tomorrow.

:26:48. > :26:54.If you catch one, it could be heavy with thunder. In the afternoon, and

:27:05. > :27:13.with some sunshine. Wednesday, a mixture of sunshine and showers,
